  • Why I love to show off – AY

Comedian/actor Ayo Makun who is popularly known as AY, have hit back on a follower by the Instagram name Faruk Jude, who says the comedian was showing off, following a video posted by AY which showed his mansion in promotion of AkpororovsAkpororo show that took place over the weekend.
While congratulating AY, the follower who compared AY to the likes of Aliko Dangote, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos said they won’t do a thing like that.
“Dangote, Bill Gate or Jeff Bezos. Won’t do a thing like this. Congrat same,” he wrote.
Replying the latter, AY wrote,”@farukjude They will not do it because they are not in showbusiness. I am in showbusiness. Without the show no business. The way you take remember come comment, na so another person go see this same video remember call my number to ask me to come and MC him event. Thanks for the sub congratulatory message though.”
“THE REASON THEM DANGOTE WILL NOT DO IT… First things first, you must always remember that @aycomedian is in the business of entertainment. More so, entertainment on the other hand is any activity which provides a diversion or permits people to amuse themselves in their leisure time, and may also provide fun, enjoyment, and laughter. In other words i can create my own entertainment by spontaneously inventing ideas; or participate actively in any activity you may find entertaining.
Also citing that some go into showbiz to be noticed, “If we are going to be honest with ourselves, we should admit that some of us go into show business wanting people to talk about us and wanting everyone to know who we are and the things we can do. But that also does not take away the fact that there are a whole bunch of people who will still not like us. No matter how we try.”
“Why do you think talents post their works online? Why do people watch The Kardashians even when some believe that they have less talent like AY? Why would some people come out of Big Brother Nigeria and suddenly become relevant? It’s all because in show business you must have something to show before the business would come. Entertaining you and showing you a part of my lifestyle might surprisingly just be me carrying out my brand ambassadorial duty in the video that went viral. Do you even know if the builders of my house or sellers of my cars are giving me a percentage for every contact I bring? Abi na crime to promote my wife @Midas_interiors work too?
“We are all here to HUSTLE. Always speak for yourself and leave them Dangote out of it. Even DJ Cuppy don dey introduce Otedola enter showbiz by flying to Italy to buy ice-cream. Lol.Above all I want to be an inspiration to every young person that wants to get into show business. Hard work, perseverance, and discipline: all the things you need when want to be an Ay. May God make you BIGGER,” he said.

  • Obasanjo recognized stand-up comedy, gave it a boost- Alibaba

Nigerian stand-up comedian, Alibaba has declared that Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo recognized stand-up comedy and gave it boost.

Alibaba, whose real name is Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome made this known at a press briefing recently.

“The ex-President, Obasanjo, wasn’t just promoting me; he recognised stand-up comedy and gave it a boost. After a while, he got used to me and started recommending me for events he attended. A lot of state governors, who used to attend those presidential dinners, used to invite me to their events. For him to have the thick skin to accommodate my jokes about him made them feel comfortable with me.

“I felt comfortable performing in front of military men because I had done events for military chiefs like Sani Abacha, Ibrahim Babangida and Tunde Idiagbon. When I performed at military barracks, I could get away with some things because I knew the ropes. I studied the origin of stand-up comedy and I knew it started with the blacks. I knew how to tell jokes without offending anybody. I knew there was a thin line between being funny and being offensive,” he said.

  • Comedians appeal for government’s support to reduce unemployment, stress

Comedians appeal for government’s support to reduce unemployment, stress

Some comedians and those who serve as masters of ceremonies (MCs) at events have appealed to the government to assist them with grants to grow the industry.

They said such gesture would also reduce unemployment and stress among people.

They made the appeal while reviewing the contributions of the industry to the nation’s economic development in 2018.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that this genre of the entertainment industry was fast becoming attractive to youths who could not secure regular employment.

They said that should government give intervention funds to the sector, it would help grow it and reduce unemployment and stress in the society.

They added that with reduced stress, people’s lives would be prolonged.

Akinlade Richard, a.k.a. MC Richard, told NAN that 2018 was a tough time for MCs and DJs alike because most companies did not celebrate their end-of-the -year parties.

“This year was really a setback as our regular targets, being companies that we relied on for our year wrap-up, stopped having the end-of-the-year parties because they could not meet their targets.

“Some even had to let go some of their programmes to enable them continue to exist as the economy was not favourable for having any party,” he told NAN.

He said that the few events that were held were planned on low budgets which hardly gave room for the invitation of comedians.

MC Richard, whose business name is Squad 1 Productions, urged the government to provide grants and loans for practitioners.

“The government should assist us with grants because our equipment are too expensive to buy,” he said.

The entertainer also suggested that visa application should be made easy for practitioners travelling abroad for shows.

He said that they were the ones that promote the country’s culture and image internationally.

Similarly, another MC and pianist, Samson Aniefiok of Springforth Productions, said that activities in the industry during the year helped the practitioners to overcome unemployment.

“The sector really created job opportunities for the talented ones.

“Practitioners must be passionate about what they do, ‘’ he said.

Samson, popularly called `Editor Samson’, advised the practitioners to be professional because their professionalism would determine the level of entertainment during any socials.

He urged the government to assist young and talented comedians to succeed.

However, an Electrical/ Electronics engineer, Innocent Okere, who started as a DJ and an MC during his undergraduate days, said he would rate the industry as having scored 80 per cent in 2018.

“We have got the talents, the brains and the wits to measure up internationally and I am very sure we can fit in anywhere we find ourselves in the industry,” he said.

NAN reports that Okere is the director of Donnie Entertainment and had put in 12 years of experience in the profession.

He said, “I still prefer being a DJ because I love it with a passion not just for the money.

“It is a profession that makes people happy and reduces stress in the society which is why the government should intervene by offering grants to its practitioners,” he said.

Meanwhile, a seasoned comedian, Segun Desmond popularly called MC Desmond, said that he would score the industry as having seven points out of 10 points.

“It has become a profession that has excelled over other sectors of the entertainment industry.

“It is a growing sector that has already created a niche for itself, people hardly do an event without a DJ, an MC or a comedian to anchor it.’’

According to him, the profession is very important in reducing the stress among the people but light-up their moods.

“ When we receive encouragement from the government; it will boost the industry as well as that of the society.

“It will also reduce crimes, crises and other vices in the society,” he said.

  • Special Report: Should comedians perform in the house of God?

Popular comedians, Still Ringing mounted the House On The Rock church’s pulpit at the recently held concert, The African Praise Experience(TAPE), and said:” Something will fall on you,

    Banana will fall on you,

    Enu Ose enu Ose,

    Ariwo Ko ni music ooh”.

The humorous duo got many wondering If they had not crossed the limits, in the delivery of their jokes on a pulpit which is supposed to be a sacred place to perform on. Still Ringing’s brand of comedy thrives on using secular songs and statements to make people laugh in the house of God.

An article published in Herald Magazine titled Uphold Holiness of the Pulpit opines that:” The pulpit must be a sacred place, a place where believers must use as a place of contact with their God should they choose to come forward to it and cast their burdens unto him.”

The deployment of stand-up comedians in churches and Christian events has become a trend in Christendom these days. While some Pastors see nothing wrong with it, other clerics see it as the pathway to defiling the altar of God. There are many choruses that echo the same sentiments about comedians performing in the church. Questions like’ How can an “entertainer” be invited to minister to “the people of God?” always comes up in such conversations.

Ace comedian and actor, Owen Gee in a chat with TheNewsGuru says:” This question I think has been over flogged, why do people complain about comedians performing in church? Are there musicians who perform in church? Yes! Are there stage plays being done in church? Yes! So why not comedy? I started my career performing in church and was amongst one of the first Christian comedians in the country.

“The church gave me my platform. Performance within the church environs is another way of communicating God’s word with the Christian audience using humour. If there are gospel musicians, then we should have gospel comedians. The opinion of a few people cannot stop the spread of the gospel via humour, God is a God of laughter”.

Revered Nigerian dramatist and founder of Mount Zion Drama Ministry, Mike Bamiloye condemns Nigerian clergies who invite comedians to perform at their church events. He affirms that making the mockery of the scriptures and the name of Jesus is unacceptable.

Hear him:” For a long while I have questioned the inclusion of comedy in church events. What do I question? The fact that the comedians brought in are allowed to make jokes of scriptures, the blood of Jesus, speaking in tongues, the throne of grace etc And we sit there laughing? What are we laughing at? What is funny? Mocking God, Christ, the Holy Spirit and the word of God is funny? We hear of other religions where they are obsessed with protecting the image of their leader and we gleefully allow people to mock our leader Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and thereby indirectly mocking God? They look at us with disdain because we are bad ambassadors of our faith!”.

In the same vein, a former member of popular gospel music group, Infinity Kenny K’ore wrote on Facebook:” I have never seen anybody that God ordained and he is a comedian. I am told that pastors now invite comedians to joke with the word of God. This is an abomination in the sanctuary. I would not have worried if it was in a market. For you as a man of God to go and hire comedians means you have nothing to offer. If you have nothing to do in the ministry, please get out!”.

Josh2Funny, a renowned social media comedian in a chat with TheNewsGuru, says that the church is the best platform for stand-up comedy.

In his words:” The church is the best place to exhibit any talent because the talent was given to you by God.You should use it to worship him in his house. I won’t pretend that I don’t know that some comedians say some jokes that shouldn’t be said in the church. The important thing is for you to identify the comedians that are good enough to perform in your church. I believe the people of God deserve happiness in the presence of their father”.

Asiri, another comedian popular for his hilarious skits on Instagram affirms that the language used in communication is germane to the overall acceptance of comedy in the house of God.

Hear him:” Every community has its language. Every organization has its dynamics. If you know the language of the elites you will communicate well there. If you know the language of the streets, the streets will respond to you. If you know the language of the church, there is nothing wrong in communicating comedy there.

“The church just has to be sure of the pedigree of any personality gracing their platforms. Comedy in my own understanding is a game of dynamics and you can’t be a master of all dynamics. If you have what it takes to craft your joke without crossing the line as pertaining to a church audience, then you understand the dynamics. But if you don’t have the capacity to appeal to the church dynamics, there are several other platforms you can grace” he reveals to TheNewsGuru.

Nigerian broadcaster and on-air-personality, Olayemi Ogunwole a.k.a Honey Pot in an Interview with TheNewsGuru says: “The activities have to be interesting for people to be attracted. Yes, I love to worship God and I work six days a week. If churches have drama groups and choir departments, I think there is nothing wrong when comedians come to liven up the atmosphere. As long as the joke is not blaspheming or dragging the name of God in the mud. I have met comedians before who crack ethical and clean jokes and when they attend secular events they still share clean jokes. I think it’s not bad when people listen to clean jokes in church” she concludes.

Adedayo Aderombi popularly known as Deeone Comedian believes comedians should not be stopped from performing in churches because, in the presence of God, there is fullness of Joy.

“In the presence of God, there is fullness of Joy. In my view, comedy in the church is a good thing and should be encouraged as long as it is ethical.

“Ecclesiastes 3:4 says:” There is a time to laugh”. I think churches should encourage more gospel and ethical comedy, it is like medicine to the body” he reveals

  • Why entertainers don’t last long- Alibaba

The quest to remain relevant is a battle entertainers continually fight. Having a hit song today is not a guarantee for unceasing relevance tomorrow. Nigeria’s king of comedy, Alibaba in a recent chat with Emma Ugolee on The Gist, spoke on the reason why some entertainers don’t last long.

In his words:“The reason some people don’t last long in the entertainment industry is that they have a shortfall of religious backing, values, humble beginning. When they stumble into wealth, they lack the proper understanding to manage it. The guy who doesn’t know how to manage 2, 000, gets into fame and has N2m. The first thing he wants to do is buy the most expensive car.”

He also emphasized on the down sides of fame saying it is difficult to know who truly loves you, when you become famous.

“As soon as you hit fame, it begins to be difficult to know who loves you. In this business, your career will die depending on the spouse you choose. If you choose a spouse that does not understand the intricate dynamic of the industry, you won’t last. Some people do not quite understand the reward of respect. When you show respect and pad it up with humility, it will take you a longer distance than fame would have taken you.”
