    Police arrest 8 suspects for attempting to disrupt inauguration of commissioners

    The Police in Kano State have arrested 8 suspects for allegedly attempting to disrupt the inauguration of newly-appointed commissioners at the Kano Government  House.

    The Commissioner of Police, Mr Usaini Gumel, told NAN through telephone on Friday that the suspects posed security threats at the venue.

    He warned miscreants and their sponsors to stay clear as whoever tried to cause security breach or disrupt the peace where critical government activities and functions were being conducted would be arrested and made to face the consequences of his action.

    ” Enough of clusters of ‘Yan Jagaliya’ loitering around Government House, Audu Bako Secretariat and similar offices trying to disrupt governance.

    ” The leader of eight thugs, being unrepentant and without remorse, led his team to the venue again until he and members met their waterloo and apprehended by the crime prevention patrol team after sustained vigilance.

    ” The suspected thugs  constituted themselves as pressure group and supporters of one of the infamous politicians and attempted to cause the breakdown of law and order.”

    He explained that the suspects were currently at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department CID where thorough investigations were ongoing, to bring them to justice as provided by the law.

    The action of the Kano State Police Command is to further assure members of the public that all necessary measures have been taken to prevent any act that can lead to disruption of the peace and security in all parts of the state.

    The commissioner of police, while appreciating the good people of the state for their support and cooperation, also reiterated the determination of the command to ruthlessly deal with any miscreant or their sponsors under whatever guise that tried to disrupt the peace.

    The CP urged the public to keep reporting any suspicious movement of person(s) or item(s) to the nearest Police Station or through the command’s emergency contact numbers.

    Ondo gov, Aiyedatiwa nominates 12 new commissioners

    Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has forwarded another list of 12 commissioner-nominees to the State House of Assembly for confirmation.

    The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan, stated this in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Akure.

    Aiyedatiwa had on March 1, 2024 sworn in six commissioners.

    “The letter containing the list of the nominees was addressed to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi,” Adeniyan said.

    The nominees are Pastor Segun Ayerin, Mr Olaolu Akindolire, Mr Hamidu Takuro, Dr Banji Ajaka, Mr Boye Ologbese, Mr Sunday Akinwalere, Mrs Lola Fagbemi, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye and Mr Rasheed Badmus.

    Others are Mr Olayato Aribo, Mr Adewale Akinlosotu and Mr Gbenga Olaniyi.

    Adeniyan said the governor urged the Assembly to give immediate consideration to the confirmation of the nominees.

    Imo Assembly confirms four Commissioner Nominees

    The Imo State Assembly, on Friday screened and confirmed four additional Commissioner Nominees during a special plenary session.

    The nominees are, Mrs Ruby Emele, Mr Nathan Okoro, Mr Ikenna Elezieanya, and the former Attorney-general of the State, C.O.C. Akaolisa.

    The House majority Leader, Mr Kanayo Onyemaechi (APC Owerri West), moved the motion for screening, and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie, (PDP-Aboh Mbaise).

    The nominees were introduced by their members in the House, and later approved by members after votes in favour of their confirmation.

    The speaker, Mr Chike Olemgbe (APC-Ihitte Uboma), declared the confirmation of the nominees, and directed the Clerk to forward the outcome to the office of the governor.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that 12 nominees had been previously screened and confirmed by the house on March 7, 2024.

    Ondo Assembly confirm Ajulo, Sowore, 3 others as commissioners

    The Ondo State House of  Assembly, on Tuesday, screened and confirmed five out of the six commissioner-nominees forwarded to it by Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

    Aiyedatiwa had on Feb. 2 submitted the names of six commissioner nominees to the State House of Assembly.

    The nominees screened and confirmed included  Mr. Olukayode Ajulo, Mr Razaq Obe, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan; Mr Akinwumi Sowore, and Mr Oseni Oyeniyi.

    Mrs Omowumi Isaac, the sixth commissioner-nominee was, however, not available for the screening exercise, but no reason was given for her absence.

    Presenting the report of his committee to the Assembly, Mr Abayomi Akinruntan, Chairman, the Selection Committee, said that the nominees possessed the relevant academic qualifications and were found physically and mentally fit to serve as commissioners.

    He asked the state lawmakers to confirm the nominees.

    Subsequently, Mr. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, APC-Owo 1, therefore moved a motion for the confirmation of the nominees and Mr Felix Afe, Akoko North-West Constituency II, seconded the motion.

    Chief Olamide Oladiji, the Speaker of the House, commended the efforts of the committee for a job well done.

    Oladiji said that the assembly had acted on the extant law following the presentation of the nominees for confirmation.

    According to him, the legislative have found them competent to serve the people of the state.

    He asked the commissioner-designates to join hands with the state governor to facilitate the dividends of democracy get to the people of the state.

    Oladiji also enjoined them to diligently serve the people and to move the state forward.

    Responding, Igbasan, who spoke on behalf of others, appreciated the assembly, and promised that the commissioner-designates would support the state governor in achieving greater success.

    Delta gov, Oborevwori swears in 3 new commissioners

    Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, on Thursday swore in Commissioners for Information, Justice and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs into his cabinet in Asaba.

    The Commissioners are Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, Information; Mr Ekemejero Ohwovoriole (SAN), Justice and Attorney-General; and Mr Kanemala Penewou, Chieftaincy, and Local Government Affairs.

    Addressing the appointees, the governor charged them to exhibit pragmatic leadership and discipline in piloting the affairs of their respective ministries to ensure result.

    He noted that all the appointees were aptly qualified, having been tested in their various fields of endeavours over the years.

    Oborevwori, who acknowledged the contributions of his legal team and other stakeholders during the challenge to his victory in the governorship polls, said that the state was now set for greater development now that all distractions from court cases were over.

    He challenged the new Attorney-General to sustain the state’s pace setting role in Criminal Justice Reforms, adding that the state’s criminal justice laws are adjudged widely to be 21st century-compliant, especially with recourse to technology.

    “The transition period of both laws ended on December, 22, 2023. So, both laws are now operational in all courts in Delta State.

    “The rigorous and successful implementation of these laws is, therefore, imperative for Delta State to maintain its leadership position.”

    Oborevwori said that as commissioners and heads of the ministries, the new appointees should lead by example by being disciplined and transparent.

    “I charge you to match your words with actions, shun ethnic politics and operate open-door policies.

    “Now that the distraction of the 38 court cases are behind us, this administration is fully committed to take the state to a higher realm to make life better for all in line with my M.O.R.E. Agenda mantra”.

    Responding on behalf of the commissioners, the Commissioner for Information, Osuoza, thanked God and appreciated Gov. Oborevwori for finding them worthy to serve in his cabinet.

    “This appointment is huge, we appreciate it and we are taking the M.O.R.E. Agenda to heart and are committed to deliver on our duties,” Osuoza said.

    He said that going forward, he would engage information officers to drive government policies and programmes at the grassroots.

    He also pledged to reposition the state media outfits to meet the modern trend in information world.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was graced by politicians, traditional leaders and people from all walks of life, including former deputy governor, Chief Benjamin Elue, and Deacon Kingsley Otuaro.

    Speaker mum as Lagos Assembly rejects Sanwo-Olu’s 17 commissioner nominees, confirms 22

    The Lagos State House of Assembly has rejected 17 commissioner nominees of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, including former commissioner for health, Prof. Akin Abayomi and former commissioner for information, Mr Gbenga Omotosho.

    The lawmakers, however, confirmed 22 other commissioner nominees of the governor.

    The exercise, which was done through a voice vote, was sequel to the screening of the nominees at the assembly’s Committee of the Whole at plenary.

    The Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over it, said the exercise followed a rigorous and detailed screening of the nominees by an ad-hoc committee led by the Chief Whip, Mr Fatai Mojeed.

    Obasa said the exercise was in line with Section 182 Sub-Section I and II of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    The speaker said the other 15 nominees rejected were as follows: Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, Mr Yomi Oluyomi, Mrs Folashade Ambrose, Ms Barakat Bakare, Olalere Odusote, Dr Rotimi Fashola, Mrs Bolaji Dada.

    According to him, others rejected include: Mr Sam Egube, Mr Olalekan Fatodu, Mrs Solape Hammond, Mr Mosopefolu George, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, Mr Seun Osiyemi, Mr Rotimi Ogunwuyi and Dr Olumide Oluyinka

    Obasa listed the 22 confirmed nominees as: Mr Layode Ibrahim, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, Ms Bola Olumegbon, Mr Idris Aregbe, Ms Abisola Olusanya, and Mr Moruf Fatai.

    “Other nominees confirmed are Mr Kayode Bolaji-Roberts, Mr Abiola Olowu, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Dr Oreoluwa Finnih- Awokoya, Mr Yakub Alebiosu, Mr Lawal Pedro, Mr Tunbosun Alake.

    “Also confirmed are Mr Gbenga Oyerinde, Dr Adekunle Olayinka, Dr Jide Babatunde, Mr Afolabi Ayantayo, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Mr Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun and Mr Abdulkabir Ogungbo.

    The speaker commended the committee for its effectiveness and urged the confirmed nominees to always remember that they were in office to serve the people of the state and not individuals.

    He also promised that the assembly would continue to do its best in the interest of the state.

    The speaker, therefore, directed the Clerk of the House, Mr Lekan Onafeko, to communicate the notice of the confirmation and rejection of the nominees to the governor.

    The Speaker did not give any reason why the assembly rejected the nominees.

    Lagos Assembly completes screening of 20 out of 39 commissioner-nominees

    Lagos State House of Assembly says it has screened 20 out of the 39 commissioner-nominees sent to it by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    Sanwo-Olu submitted a total of 39 commissioners and Special Adviser nominees to the House for screening and confirmation on July 28.

    Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa earlier set up a 12-man committee for the screening.

    “Twenty of the 39 nominees have so far been screened by the committee which began sitting on Sunday,’’ Chairman of the committee, Hon. Mojeed Fatai (APC-Ibeju-Lekki), said on Monday at Ikeja.

    He added that the screening would be completed by the Wednesday deadline given the committee.

    Gov. Sule swears in 16 new commissioners

    Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nassarawa State has sworn in 16 commissioners recently screened and confirmed by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

    Sule, at the event on Monday in Lafia, urged the new commissioners to shun corrupt tendencies and key into his administration’s vision of transparency, accountability and rule of law.

    He advised them to justify the confidence that the government reposed in them.

    ”I want to congratulate you on your well deserved appointments as we have made wide consultations in the selection of commissioners across the state

    ” I want to implore you to key into my administration’s vision of transparency and accountability and you are to shun corrupt tendencies.

    ”I also urge you to be dedicated and hardworking as this administration cherishes hard work, commitment and loyalty,” he said.

    Sule further assured of his administration’s continuous determination to develop good policies and programmes that would have direct bearing on the lives of the people.

    The governor specifically commended the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Abdullahi and his members,for speedy screening and confirmation of the commissioners.

    Besides, the governor announced that the state government would distribute palliatives recently received from the Federal Government in order to alleviate the economic suffering occasioned by the subsidy removal of petroleum subsidy.

    Earlier, Muhammad Aliyu, the Secretary to the State Government had appreciated the governor for providing good governance and dividends of democracy to people of the state

    The SSG noted that the new commissioners who were screened and confirmed by the assembly were also cleared by security agencies.

    ”Nasarawa State has never had it so good like now because of the governor’s good policies and programmes, ” he said

    Newsmen reports that the new commissioners are: Yakubu Kwanta (Environment and Natural Resources), Aishatu Rufai (Women Affairs), Umar Dan’akano ( Agriculture), Munirat Abdullahi, (Finance) Timothy Kasuwa (Special Duties on Security and Public Matters).

    Ja’afaru Ango (Youth and Sports Development) , Margaret Elayo (Special Duties on Humanitarian Services and NGOs), Bala Muiki (Lands and Urban Development) and John Mamman(Education)

    Others are: Abubakar Zanwa (Water Resources and Rural Development), Samuel Emgba (Science and Technology), Aliyu Tijjani ( Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs), Muhammed Iyimoga (Trade and Investment), Barr Labaran Magaji (Justice).

    Dr. Gaza Gwamna ( Health) and Mu’azu Gosho (Works, Housing and Transport).

    Newsmen reports that the assembly had on Aug. 1 screened, confirmed and submitted 16 out of the 17 nominees forwarded to it by the governor.

    Newsmen further reports that the speaker had confirmed that the Haruna Musa, the 17th nominee was not available for the screening due to undisclosed health situation.

    The newly-appointed commissioners in Enugu State were on Friday given different portfolios during the first Executive Council meeting.

    Following their confirmation by State House of Assembly, the 20 commissioners were sworn-in on Thursday by the state governor, Mr Peter Mbah to constitute the State Executive Council.

    The governor had charged them to get down to work immediately as the administration was in a hurry to deliver on its campaign promises.

    Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, gets Commissioner for Education, Mrs Ngozi Enih; Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Prince Lawrence Ezeh; Lands and Urban Development, while Mr Patrick Ubro; Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization and Mr Chika Ugwoke, Labour and Employment.

    Dr Kingsley Udeh was appointed the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof Emmanuel Obi, retained the Health Ministry, Chief Okey Ogbodo, Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Dame Ugochi Madueke is in charge of the  Culture and Tourism Ministry.

    Others were Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, Youth and Sports and Mr Gerald Otiji, Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Nathaniel Uramah, Finance and Economic Development, and Dr. Malachy Agbo, Human Development and Poverty Eradication.

    A former broadcaster with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Mr. Aka Eze Aka is the new Information Commissioner, Mrs. Adaora Chukwu, Trade Investment and Industry, Dr Martin Chukwunwike, Housing and Mr Obi Ozor, Transport.

    Prof. Sam Ugwu, Environment and Climate Change, Mr Emeka Ajogwu gets Special Duties and Dr Felix Nnamani heads the Water Resources.

    Be patient, better life is coming, Gov. Radda appeals to Katsina people

    The Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Radda, has appealed to Katsina people to exercise patient as better life is coming to them in the nearest time.

    The governor made the appeal on Tuesday in Katsina, during the swearing in of 20 Commissioners as members of the state executive council.

    Also, 18 special assistants were sworn in.

    According to him, people should remain patient with his administration as measures were being taken to better their living standards soon.

    “I want to call on the good people of the state to be patient with us. We are rolling out plans that will bring about better life and reduce the hardship for the people.

    “We are coming up with palliatives to mitigate the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy, and also liberalisation of exchange rate of Dollar and Naira.

    “I want to also assure you that the government is committed to making sure that we deliver on the mandate given to us.

    “And we urge you to join us in prayers to God that Almighty Allah will bring criminality to an end in the state. These include banditry that has been affecting our people. We intend to reduce the hardship on the lives of the poor.

    “We will do everything possible to alleviate the suffering of the people, and I want you to give us all your cooperation,” the governor appealed.

    Radda added that his government was committed to tackling insecurity and economic challenges bedevilling the state, especially at the rural areas.

    He further told the new commissioners that he will not hesitate to sack any of them who fails to perform or abscond from his duties.

    According to him, the commissioners would be strictly assessed on performance indicators and anyone who failed to measure up knows the consequences.

    He said, “I want to assure you that anyone of you who fails to do the right thing or perform well, would be removed. We will also change you from your place of work.

    “We will not allow you to work permanently in one place, we will continue to change you from your place of work to other places for efficient and effective service delivery,” he said.
