Over 30 killed in Taraba Community as violence erupts again

At least 30 people lost their lives last Friday in a deadly attack on Munga Lelau, a community in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State. Armed assailants reportedly stormed the village around 2:30 p.m., setting fire to homes and food storage facilities worth millions of naira.

The incident is the latest in a series of recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the area, but local sources have described Friday’s attack as the deadliest in recent memory.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, believed to be Fulani herdsmen, arrived on motorcycles and launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions, catching residents off guard. However, Fulani pastoralists have countered these claims, alleging that they too have been victims of violent attacks by farming communities.

Several neighbouring villages were also attacked, though casualty figures from those areas remain unconfirmed. Witness accounts paint a grim picture of indiscriminate shootings, burning homes, and widespread destruction. One survivor described the assault as “a nightmare in broad daylight.”

According to Daily Trust, security personnel were stationed in Bandawa—a nearby community previously hit by similar violence—when the attackers descended on Munga Lelau. By the time security forces arrived, over 20 bodies had already been recovered, and many residents were wounded by gunfire.

Victims were buried in a mass grave on Saturday under the supervision of military and police personnel, as the community grappled with grief and devastation.

Prior to the May 23 attack, a series of violent incidents had been reported in Bandawa, Munga, and Fulani settlements, with dozens killed in ongoing clashes and reprisal attacks.

Bandawa community spokesperson, Mr. Joachim Dangana, condemned the violence, calling the event deeply tragic. He emphasized the historically peaceful relationship between the Fulani and Bandawa communities and appealed for reconciliation to restore lasting peace.

He also stressed the importance of peace for Taraba State’s development, especially as Governor Agbu Kefas works to draw local and foreign investment to the region.

Isa Ahmed, speaking for the Fulani community, echoed calls for peace but also highlighted the suffering endured by Fulani groups in the area. He alleged that over 30 Fulani individuals, including women and youths, had been killed in previous assaults, with more than 35 injured and hundreds of cattle either killed or stolen.

“Our voices are not heard, our complaints are ignored, and yet we are labelled as the aggressors,” Ahmed said.

Daily Trust investigations revealed that Karim Lamido is a key destination for dry-season rice farmers from across Nigeria. However, the escalating violence has forced many to abandon the area for safer locations.

The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the attack on Munga Lelau and stated that investigations are ongoing.

SAD! Explosive device kills seven soldiers on rescue mission to save community

No fewer than seven operatives of the Nigerian Army have been confirmed dead after their vehicle hit an explosive in Mugunu area of Maiduguri in Borno State, SaharaReporters has gathered.

On Thursday morning, the vehicle reportedly hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram along the Gamboru Ngala-Maiduguri Road in Borno State.

The Army reportedly received a distress call during early on Thursday that Boko Haram terrorists were attacking a neighbouring community and they quickly mobilised themselves to rescue the community.

response to the Boko Haram siege, the commandant ordered the deployment of three vehicles carrying armed soldiers to the community. Tragically, one of the vehicles struck an electro-explosive device (EED) in the Mugunu area of Maiduguri, resulting in the loss of all but one of the soldiers on board.

This is not the first time Boko Haram has planted IEDs in the area, as a resident of Gamboru Ngala reported that many vehicles travelling on the road have been damaged by IEDs.

Videos and images showing soldiers grappling with the gruesome task of recovering and reassembling the dismembered remains of their comrades, who were tragically killed by an explosive device on Thursday morning.

A military source said: “They (referring to the deceased soldiers) were called that a neighbouring community is under attack by Boko Haram.

“So their commandant said they should go. So they moved with the commandant around 5 am (on Thursday) in a convoy. The first and second vehicles passed, his own was the third, the EED device exploded and scattered all of them in the vehicle. They were seven.”

“We are waiting for their official call because they said they would look for their parts and pack them to the morgue and attach their service number before they contact family members of the deceased soldiers,” the source added.

At the time of filing this report, information about the identities of the deceased remained limited. However, according to reliable sources, it has been confirmed that one of the victims has been identified as Luke, a native of Cross River State.

  • Tension mounts along Ideani, Abatete border over illegal invasion as community sends SOS to Soludo

Tension mounts along Ideani, Abatete border over illegal invasion as community sends SOS to Soludo

Palpable fears have seized the local folks of Oko village in Ideani, Idemili North Council of Anambra State over what they described as “subterranean and covert moves by some unscrupulous land speculators/grabbers(names withheld) visibly aided by top officials of the Anambra State Boundary Commission, masking under various guises to cajole, intimidate, manipulate and harass the villagers into giving up ancestral lands inherited from forebears out of fears.”

In a strongly worded petition to the Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, the security agencies, the Anambra State Assembly, and the traditional ruler of Abatete in concert with the palace of the Eze Ide in-Council of Ideani, the villagers alleged that “the intimidation of our
uninformed villagers was inarguably to prevent them from speaking out or raising the alarm against the land speculators so as to enable them complete their sinister mission of removing the ancient landmarks, beacons and the mutually agreed/set boundary between the neighbouring Abatete and Ideani Communities along the Ogbu(Abatete) and Oko(Ideani)villages, both in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State”.

The petition signed by the Secretary of the Igwe-In-Council -Chief Theo Ikenwa noted that, “our preliminary investigation revealed that these mindless land speculators were said to have been going round with a team of heavily armed police officers and thugs, together with some high ranking officers of the Anambra State Boundary Commission in order to give their criminal enterprise an official imprimatur.

Therefore, “the Ideani Royal Palace hereby issue a note of warning, and caution to the general public against dealing with anyone over any portion of land along the Ogbu Abatete/Oko Ideani borders would be doing so at his/her own risk.

It went further to assert that “those selling or the unsuspecting buyers of any plot of land in the quoted areas are clearly dealing with criminals who have no legal authority or mandate whatsoever to do so. As the Oko village has not enough land for her indigenes, hence none to sell to anyone.

It added that “Ideani Community has not delegated any person/s to discuss, negotiate or deal with anyone on her behalf on this referred land or any other land in the community whatsoever. So, anyone doing so under whatever guise is a criminal and should be treated as such.”

A visit to the referred Abatete/Ideani border region, the troubled area by a team of journalists met a silence of the graveyard where the fear-strcken villagers maintained sealed lips. They apparently see any strange face with deep suspicion, therefore adopted a studied caution when approached for comments.

However, one aged man in his 70s who gave his name simply as Samuel admitted that the villagers saw some known ”notorious land grabbers” on a couple of times in the past one year or thereabout parading the border area with some other persons and heavily armed policemen alleged to be from the Anambra State Boundary Commission demolishing old beacons and planting new ones far into the Ideani side of the boundary.

He also disclosed that unconfirmed information revealed that about five hundred(500) plots of land were so far stolen/seized from the villagers and were already sold off instantly.

Mr Samuel disclosed that amongst the buyers were known troubleshooters from both Abatete and Ideani communities. And that the syndicate were discovered to included active connivance from both communities and officials of Anambra State Boundary Commission.

Ikenwa in the memo counselled anyone who has given out money over lands in the affected area to go for immediate refund, as any documents being circulated in consequence were mere fabrications by the criminal syndicate, and amounted to nothing but only good for the dustbin.

He emphasized that “there is a subsisting/binding agreement between the two neighboring Communities sealed by their traditional rulers years ago.

“Any new marks, boundary or beacons for whatever reason being set by anyone or group of persons under whatever guise on the referred Ogbu/Oko border without recourse to this agreement dated September 22, 1999 is null and void!

Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Anambra Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezi who is the chairman of the state’s Boundary Commission remained unsuccessful as he was said to be on field work for past seven weeks! Even several visits to his office, text messages and phone calls have yielded no positive attention.

However, a top aide in the Boundary Commission confirmed their being aware of the ruffled feathers in the stated border area. “But we are already tackling it”, he disclosed simplistically.

An inquiry at the Abatete Royal Palace, just like that of Ideani revealed they were oblivious of any visit or actions from the Boundary Commission. They told journalists that it was not true that the Government was doing something as no one has contacted either palaces or the town Union leaderships of both communities.

The Eze-In-council of Ideani disclosed that the Save Our Soul letter to the governor and
other agencies was given rise to by the daily complaints and apprehensive concerns of the villagers to the palace.

More so that repeated visits, phone calls and messages efforts to the Deputy Governor had all met a brickwall. So, in consequence they decided to come open in public.

According to some youths in the area, “the pent up anger would burst open any moment as we rarely sleep with two eyes closed these days. We have resolved to meet with anyone coming around to lay claim to any part of the land”, he sarcastically dropped while puffing away his cigarette oozing some strange choking smell.

Army debunks allegation of invasion of Abia community

The Nigerian Army has debunked the allegation that troops of 82 Division invaded Amangu community in Abia over abduction of a solders who was on official leave.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu debunked the allegation in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said the army authorities deemed it necessary to clear the air on the incident considering the weighty nature of the allegation.

He said operations conducted in the area was to rescue a soldier, Sgt. Bassey Ikunugwan, who was officially on leave, but abducted on Nov. 2, along Okwu-Ebem Ohafia road in Abia.

According to him, troops on Nov. 3, acting on credible intelligence, embarked on a search and rescue operation at Amangu village and forest, a confirmed enclave of Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network.

Nwachukwu said that troops came in contact with members of the proscribed armed groups during the operation resulting in exchange of fire.

He added that another operation on Nov. 4 at Okon Aku led to the killing of one of the criminals and recovery of one AK 47 rifle with a magazine loaded with seven rounds of 7.62mm (Special) and one mobile phone.

…as SERVICOM Seeks Fresh Law Against Corrupt Public Servants

National coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of SERVICOM, Nnenna Akajimeli has disclosed that top-ranking public servants who compromise standards will face fresh punishment under a new law being proposed while applauding the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) following reports of display of professionalism and honesty by its staff.

NCAA’s commendation is coming after renowned journalist Angela Agoawike went public to laud agency staff for being professional and upright in dealing with the public.

Speaking at a special radio town hall meeting on “Integrity In The Public Service,” organized by the Progressive Impact Organization For Community Development, PRIMORG, on Friday in Abuja, Akajimeli disclosed that a bill is underway to ensure improvement in service delivery and punish chief executives officers and accounting officers of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) who compromise on their responsibilities.

She added that interventions by SERVICOM since its establishment are evident in the gradual improvements seen in service delivery in the public sector, noting that a lot of work is still needed.

Her words: “For now, we (SERVICOM) are working on getting a bill, and this bill has made tremendous progress.

“The new bill we are driving to have and enact as a law will drive the service delivery process in Nigeria. It contains some subtle punishment for CEOs, for chief accounting officers, for people who are supposed to serve citizens, who compromise on such responsibilities, that is provided going forward, and that is where we are working to be.”

Akajimeli, who praised PRIMORG for bringing the story of the display of honesty by NCAA’s staff to public knowledge, said the government-owned customer service agency adopted a name and fame approach to encourage public servants for now. Adding that plans are already on the ground to take services rendered by SERVICOM to the sub-national level.

“We use the raise and praise and the name and shame practice, for now. It means that when we carry out the evaluations of MDAs that stand out, and they do what the government has mandated them to do, we praise them. For those who fall short, we refer to service failure experiences at their service window.

“We are pushing to also take SERVICOM to the subnational. Two weeks back, I made a presentation to the National Economic Council and enumerated the importance of also taking SERVICOM and service delivery initiatives to the states and the local government,” Akajimeli said.

Narrating her ordeal at NCAA, communication specialist and owner of a radio station in Owerri, Imo state, Angela Agoawike, said she was surprised at the way and manner staff of NCAA attended to her as she sought clearance for radio mast, stressing that “from the gate man to the highest person was different from the norm and no one asked for tips of any sort.”

Agoawike labeled the absence of exemplary leadership and lack of consequence for corrupt acts in the public service as reasons integrity will be hard to replicate in all other MDAs.

“We have laws, but we don’t sanction when you contravene certain rules and regulations. “There is a sanction to it, maybe that’s the problem we have with the civil service, maybe there is a lot of cronyism there, maybe there’s a lot of I don’t care, it is not my property, it’s not my father’s company.”

Agoawike called on the government to eliminate human interface in delivering service by ensuring their official websites are functional.

Also speaking during the radio programme, NCAA’s Public Relations Manager, Samuel Adurogboye, said the professionalism and uprightness displayed by the agency staff have their roots in the NCAA recruitment culture. Noting that “40 percent of the staff of NCAA came from the private sector.

“NCAA is not a private organization, but the staffers are recruited from the government and the private sector.”

To encourage integrity, He revealed that the NCAA established a reward system to reward excellence and also to punish wrongdoing, as well as hold staff training regularly, “Our own capital project is staff training, human resource is our own strength,” Adurogboye stressed.

He dismissed fears of external interference or influence of any sort at NCAA, saying, “people should know that we stand for international organizations, the NCAA is a Nigeria organization, but then we are governed by international rules.

“By law, we are autonomous. We are self-financing; the only thing we do is that we must go to the National Assembly to defend our budget.”

Deputy Director, Reform Coordination, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Kabiru Sarki Bello, said the bureau is constrained from delivering very sound reforms because of inadequate funds, manpower, and working tools.

His words: “One of the major problems we have at the Bureau is a shortage in funding, we do a lot of manpower development and capacity, we don’t have office space and working tools,” Bello lamented.

Earlier in the programme, the Country Director at Accountability Lab Nigeria, Friday Odeh, called on the media to focus on stories of integrity and accountability in the public sector. He expressed worry that integrity stories may not receive serious attention as political campaigns intensify.

Odeh said, “I think we need to keep having conversations on a positive narrative. One of the key things I’ve seen around it has its influence.

“I want to use this medium to encourage the media to start having these conversations. This is campaign season, and politicians will take charge everywhere. The media should encourage Nigerians to also pay attention to accountability and integrity,” Odeh advised.

PRIMORG’s Town Hall Meeting on integrity in public service is aimed at calling the public and government attention to specific issues of corruption in Nigeria.
