    Dignitaries gather at the UniAbuja for AMCRON conference on security and media

    Prominent academics, scholars, policymakers, and public officials from across Nigeria, Africa and the globe will gather at the University of Abuja on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, for the 4th International Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON).

    This highly anticipated event, themed “Contending Issues in National Security and the Role of the Media,” will explore critical issues surrounding national security and the pivotal role of the media in shaping public perception and policy decisions, according to group chairman, and renowned Professor of Communication, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye.

    The conference, to be held at the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies at the University’s permanent site, will serve as a platform for diverse stakeholders to engage in robust discussions on the complex relationship between national security and media practices in Africa.

    With Nigeria’s national security concerns growing ever more complex, the event according to Professor Ralph Akinfeleye promises to bring to the fore groundbreaking ideas, innovative research, and thought-provoking exchanges aimed at fostering solutions to contemporary challenges.

    President of the group, Professor Eserinune Mojaye added that the gathering is to feature a prestigious lineup of speakers, including high-profile academics, scholars, and media professionals, who will share their expertise and insights on various aspects of national security and the media.

    “Government functionaries and policymakers, many of whom have been invited to deliver goodwill addresses, will also lend their voices to the discourse, bringing practical perspectives on the intersection of security, governance, and media accountability”

    Group Secretary Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi stressed that the conference is a critical moment in the national dialogue on security.

    “In the face of ongoing security challenges, the media’s role in safeguarding peace and stability cannot be overemphasised. This conference provides an exceptional opportunity for media professionals, scholars, and policymakers to collectively examine and offer solutions to the pressing security issues facing the nation”.

    The opening ceremony, scheduled for 10:00 a.m., will feature goodwill addresses from notable public figures, who are invited to either attend in person, present virtually via Zoom, or delegate representatives.

    The conference is expected to be a hub of intellectual engagement, presenting an ideal environment for the exchange of ideas and research findings, particularly on how the media can contribute to national security efforts without compromising the principles of press freedom.

    The conference will also address the broader African context, offering regional perspectives on the media’s evolving role in conflict resolution, counterterrorism, and peacebuilding initiatives, given that AMCRON, with its commitment to advancing communication research, hopes to inspire innovative solutions that not only influence public perception but also shape national security policies.

    JUST IN: Buhari jets out to Senegal

    President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Dakar, the capital of Senegal, ahead of the 2nd edition of Dakar International Conference on Agriculture.

    Mr Sunday Aghaeze, the Personal Assistant to the President (Photography) confirmed this via pictorial reports on Tuesday night.

    According to the pictures released by Aghaeze, the Senegalese Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Country’s Seal, Sidiki Kaba received the Nigerian leader at the airport.

    The pictures also indicated that President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, met with President Buhari on arrival ahead of the 2nd Dakar International Conference on Agriculture.

    President Buhari departed Lagos for Senegal on Tuesday after two-day officil visit to the State where he inaugurated some developmental projects.

    The projects included the Lekki Deep Sea Port and the Imota Rice Mill which are projected to create more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.

    Buhari also inaugurated the Bestaf Lubricant at MRS Holdings Company Limited, Apapa, as well as the historic first Phase of the Blue Line of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit and the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History on Tuesday.

    The first phase of the Lagos Blue Rail Line, taking a ride from the Marina Station to National Theatre Station, executed by the State Government, which spans 13 kilometers, has five stations – Mile 2, Suru-Alaba, Orile Iganmu, National Theatre and Marina.

    The high-level Dakar 2 Summit hosted by President Macky Sall of Senegal and the Chairperson of the African Union is holding under the theme “Feeding Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience.”

    The conference, which seeks to create favourable conditions toward achieving food security in Africa, is convened jointly by the government of Senegal and the African Development Bank.

    The event will bring together more than 1,500 people, with the participation of Heads of State and Government, Ministers in charge of Economy and Finance, Ministers of Agriculture and related sectors, Governors of Central Banks as well as private sector stakeholders, multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, leading academics and scientists.

    During the three-day summit, key stakeholders, including heads of state, development partners and private sector participants will come together to mobilise financing that will harness Africa’s food and agriculture potential.

    The idea is to turning advocacy into concrete action.

    Nigeria hosts regional digital economy conference

    Policy makers and stakeholders in the digital economy ecosystem in the West African sub-region will converge in Abuja from January 31 to 1srt February for the Digital Economy Regional Conference to discuss the future of digital economy and intensify regional public private partnerships for the region.

    The event is being hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the World Bank.

    The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, who will deliver the keynote address at the event will be joined by his Federal Capital Territory (FCT) counterpart, Mohammed Bello, to welcome Ministers and top government officials from the subregion.

    The Conference, with the theme “Positioning West Africa’s Digital Economy for the Future”, will provide a platform for countries in the region to discuss issues that will strengthen the digital economies in West Africa and by extension the continent.

    The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy said the conference will also create an avenue for peer review to accelerate digital transformation and increase collaboration to secure partnerships within the region to strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem while intensifying regional public-private partnerships for digital economy funding, research, and development.

    It is expected that the gathering will also provide an opportunity to showcase the progress made in the development of digital economy in the West African sub-region, identify winning strategies, discuss challenges, and prepare for the future in addition to creating awareness of the region’s needs in the areas of policies and framework for the digital economy and attracting private sponsors for digital transformation in the region.

    Africa’s Global Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has said that its diversified business model in key international markets on the continent and around the world, continues to act as a hedge and to position the Group to better mitigate business risks arising from the financial, economic and political environment.

    UBA Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, who stated this, pointed out that due to its wide reach and network, the banking group is strengthened and largely insulated from internal and external challenges that have become commonplace amongst financial institutions on the continent.

Furthermore, our presence in global financial centres such as New York, Paris, and London provide further diversification of revenues and hedges against devaluation on the African continent.     Reflect on how relevant your actions are in a troubled democracy – Oby Ezekwesili tells NBA

    Former education minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has urged Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), whose annaul conference is scheduled to hold in Sokoto, to use the moment to reflect on “how relevant its actions are in a troubled democracy.”

    The annual NBA conference is scheduled to hold from Sunday, May 22 to Thursday, May 26, 2022.

     

    Following Thursday’s killing of a student, Deborah Samuel, in Sokoto for alleged blasphemy, the former education withdrew from participating at the NBA’s conference.

     

    Mrs Ezekwesili, who was billed to speak during a session on ‘democratic evolution and nation-building, noted that she would be boycotting the event in protest against the killing of the student.

     

    The former World Bank executive added, “I shall no longer participate. NBA owes citizens like #DeborahSamuel #EuniceOlawale #BridgetAgbaheme the judicial activism to enforce Justice.”

     

    “I have decided to withdraw my Speaking commitment to @NigBarAssoc for its event holding in Sokoto. I was billed to speak from abroad via Zoom but even now will no longer do so,” she noted.

     

    Those scheduled to speak in the session alongside Ezekwesili are INEC chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Rivers State Governor and presidential aspirant Nyesom Wike among others.

     

    Earlier, rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa called on the NBA to cancel the conference over the killing of Samuel.

    President Muhammadu Buhari will, Monday October 25, 2021, depart for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to participate in the investment conference organized by the Future Investment Initiative Institute.

    The President will be joined at the 5th edition of the flagship investment event by business executives from Nigeria, bankers, Captains of industry and energy experts to discuss issues on the future of investments across the globe.

    The three-day event, with the theme, INVESTMENT IN HUMANITY, which will host global executives and asset managers, will deliberate on progress and prosperity with energy; true final frontiers in investments; science in action; and impact of climate change on communities among others.

    President Buhari will perform the lesser Hajj in Madina & Makka before returning to the country on Friday.

  • FAAN suspends national aviation conference

    The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has suspended the National Aviation Conference earlier scheduled for 1st to 4th April, 2020, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

    A statement signed by General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, on Tuesday in Lagos said that the suspension was necessary to safeguard public health in view of the Coronavirus pandemic.

    She said that the World Health Organisation recently declared COVID 19 a global pandemic and advised individuals and organisations to avoid clustered gatherings to prevent the spread of the virus.

    The spokesperson said FAAN regretted the postponement of the National Aviation Conference, and that a new date for the conference would be announced as soon as possible.

  • ITU conference: Nigeria to deepen broadband penetration – NCC

    The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says that Nigeria’s participation in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Durban, South Africa will focus on attracting new investors to deepen broadband penetration.

    The Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

    Ojobo said this year’s participation would be to particularly attract new investors to the much sought broadband segment of the sector to meet the 30 per cent target by the end of 2018.

    “These investors will deepen Nigeria’s quest for pervasive broadband whose penetration level currently stands at 22 per cent,’’ he said.

    He said that riding on the crest of the successes the country recorded in the South Korea ITU Telecom World 2017, Nigeria’s planning committee for the 2018 edition of ITU Telecom World holding Sept. 10 to Sept. 13, 2018 has been inaugurated.

    Ojobo said that the Nigerian delegation, which will be led by Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, include the Chairman of NCC Board, Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye; Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of NCC Prof. Umar Danbatta.

    The theme of the 2018 ITU conference is: “Innovation for Smarter Digital Development”.
