Appeal panel declares north-central PDP congress free, fair

“You will recall that last Saturday, the north-central zone of our party held its congress.

“We were earlier appointed to serve as an appeal panel to entertain complaints that may arise from the outcome of the zonal congress.

“This is in line with the guidelines and constitution of the PDP; we have been on ground since Sunday.

  • PDP has not conducted S/South zonal congress – NWC

PDP has not conducted S/South zonal congress – NWC

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from the party’s  South South Zonal Congress held on Saturday in Calabar.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said the outcome of the Calabar purported congress was null and void.

Ologunagba said that the party NWC’s attention was drawn to a reported social gathering in Calabar, Cross River where the organisers falsely claimed same to be the PDP South South zonal congress .

He recalled that the NWC at its meeting on Thursday, in exercise of its powers under Section 29 (2)(b), pursuant to Section 31 (2) (c) and (j) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) postponed the conduct of the South South zonal congress from the earlier scheduled date of Feb. 22.

Ologunagba said that the postponement was to allow for further consultation on critical issues relating to the smooth conduct of the congress in the Zone.

According to him, Section 29 (2)(b) of the PDP Constitution empowers the NWC to “in case of emergency, act on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) subject to the ratification of the NEC ”.

Ologunagba also said that “Section 31(2)(c) expressly provides that the NEC shall “supervise and direct the work of the Party and all its organs including the national, zonal, state and local government organs”.

He added that in the same vein Section 31(2)(j) empowers the NEC to make party electoral regulations to govern the conduct of elections to all party offices at every level and regulate procedures for selecting the party candidates for elective offices.

“For emphasis therefore, the PDP states that it has not conducted its South South zonal congress and it has yet to communicate a date for the exercise,” Ologunagba said.

He called on all party members in the South South zone, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and the media to disregard any gathering or outcome of such in Calabar, purported to be the party zonal congress.

Ologunagba said that the party in due course and through its official channels would communicate a new date for the conduct of the South South zonal congress.

He commended the PDP South-South state governors, other leaders, key stakeholders, and party members in the zone for their loyalty and steadfastness in promoting the unity, stability, and growth of the party both in the region and nationwide.

NAN reports that Dan Orbih and all the immediate past zonal officers, who were elected four years ago in Port Harcourt, were re-elected during the congress on Saturday in Calabar.

They were all returned unopposed, but an election was conducted to reaffirm their positions.

The zonal executive consists of 10 members, in addition to six ex-officio members.

The congress was attended by former governors, former and serving members of the National Assembly, among others

  • NUJ National Secretariat urged to update compendium

NUJ National Secretariat urged to update compendium

The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been urged to update the compendium of member journalists across the country.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this was part of resolutions reached during a Congress of the NUJ FCT Council in reference to Article 3 of the Constitution of the Union.

While Article 3 has to do with membership of the Union, Article 3(3J) states that “the National Secretariat shall certify all registered journalists” and Article 3(3L) adds that “the NUJ shall maintain a website containing all the names of qualified journalists who are registered with it regularly”.

However, during the Congress of the NUJ FCT Council held in March, duly qualified and registered members of the Union complained of not having their names on the compendium of the NUJ, which is domiciled on the website of the Union.

There were other several complaints that the names of member journalists do not tally with the numbers on the list on the website. According to the complaints raised, this has caused members embarrassment, and denied privileges and opportunities, especially at embassies.

Following deliberations, the Congress reached the resolution to urge the NUJ National Secretariat to update the compendium to avoid the embarrassment of members as the media dubbed the fourth estate of the realm, cannot afford to be seen as a disorganised and dishevelled institution.

  • US Congress to grill TikTok CEO over data privacy concerns

US Congress to grill TikTok CEO over data privacy concerns

Shou Zi Chew, Chief Executive Officer of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is set to face the United States Congress over data privacy concerns.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that Chew will be grilled by American lawmakers on Thursday, as they consider legislation that will enable President Joe Biden to order a nationwide ban on the app.

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce stated that the hearing will focus on TikTok’s “consumer privacy and data security practices, how the platform affects children, and its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party”.

TikTok has come under heavy scrutiny in recent times over its ties with the Chinese government. Many western states, including the US have prohibited the use of the app on government-owned devices.

In December last year, lawmakers of the US Senate introduced a bill to ban the use of the video sharing platform in the country.

One of the bill’s sponsors, Republican Senator Marco Rubio of the Senate Intelligence Committee, stated that the app was not just about creating videos, but it serves as a major tool in the hands of the Chinese Government to obtain sensitive data from Americans.

Earlier in March, US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, revealed that the White House had welcomed the bill which would empower the President to ban the app in the country.

The bipartisan bill “would empower the United States government to prevent certain foreign governments from exploiting technology services… in a way that poses risks to Americans’ sensitive data and our national security,” Sullivan said.

Already, the US military, the State Department, and the Department of Homeland Security have all restricted the app from operating on their computer devices

Similarly, the European Commission, United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand, have ordered government workers to delete the application from their official devices.

Last week, a Wall Street Journal report revealed that the US government has also recently demanded that ByteDance sell its shares in the TikTok app, or face a national ban.

  • U.S. Congress passes landmark bill protecting same-sex marriage

U.S. Congress passes landmark bill protecting same-sex marriage

The U.S. House of Representatives has given final congressional approval to legislation that provides federal recognition of same-sex marriages, a measure born out of concern that the Supreme Court could reverse its support for legal recognition of such relationships.

The House vote was 258-169, with all of the chamber’s Democrats and 39 Republicans voting in favour – though 169 of the chamber’s Republicans voted against it and one voted “present.”

The measure now goes to Democratic President Joe Biden’s desk for signature into law.

The Respect for Marriage Act, as it is called, won Senate approval last month.

The legislation won the support of LGBT advocates as well as a number of religious organizations and entities including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though many American religious conservatives still oppose gay marriage as counter to biblical scripture.

It is narrowly written to act as a limited backstop for the 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, known as Obergefell v. Hodges.

It would allow the federal government and states to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages as long as they were legal in the states where they were performed.

It makes concessions for religious groups and institutions that do not support such marriages.

The measure would repeal a 1996 U.S. law called the Defense of Marriage Act, which among other things denied federal benefits to same-sex couples.

It bars states from rejecting the validity of out-of-state marriages on the basis of sex, race or ethnicity.

The Supreme Court in 1967 declared prohibitions on interracial marriage unconstitutional.

But the legislation would not bar states from blocking same-sex or interracial marriages if the Supreme Court allowed them to do so.

It also ensures that religious entities would not be forced to provide goods or services for any marriage and protects them from being denied tax-exempt status or other benefits for declining to recognize same-sex marriages.

In a speech on the House floor ahead of the vote, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned the “hateful movement” behind attacks on LGBT rights in the United States.

The legislation “will help prevent right-wing extremists from upending the lives of loving couples, traumatising kids across the country and turning back the clock on hard-won prizes,” Pelosi said.

Republican Representative Jim Jordan said the bill was “dangerous and takes the country in the wrong direction.”

When the Senate passed it by a vote of 61-36, 12 Republicans joined 49 Democrats in supporting it. Most Senate Republicans voted against it.

A broader version of the bill – without the explicit protections for religious liberty – passed the 435-seat House in August, with the backing of all the Democrats and 47 Republicans.

But to get the necessary 60 votes in the Senate to proceed with the legislation amid opposition by many Republican senators, its co-sponsors added an amendment clarifying that religious groups could not be sued under the it.

The legislation was written by a group of Democratic and Republican senators in response to fears that the Supreme Court, with its increasingly assertive conservative majority, could someday strike down the Obergefell ruling, potentially jeopardizing same-sex marriage nationwide.

The court has shown a willingness to reverse its own precedents as it did in June when it overturned its landmark 1973 ruling that had legalized abortion nationwide.

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority on Monday appeared ready to rule that a Christian web des has a right to refuse to provide services for same-sex marriages in a case the liberal justices said could empower certain businesses to discriminate based on constitutional free speech protections.
