2023: Again, APC proposes to adjust timetable, shifts congresses to May 16

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has again proposed an adjustment of its tiimetable for participation in the 2023 General elections and has moved its Special Congresses for Delegates to May 16 and 17.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls Special Congresses were originally scheduled to hold from Thursday, May 12, until the Party took the decision to change the date and allow time for critical announcements and orientation of committee members before the Congresses.

This will be the third time the ruling party will be presenting timetable for its crucial primary elections after its National Convention of March 26, 2022.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently warned political parties to ensure they meet its own deadline for primary election.

The latest change was to allow the party set up committee for the special congresses which was originally scheduled for Thursday May 12, 2022. Sources told Prime Business Africa that the Secretary General of APC Iyiola Omisore was given a marching order ‘from above’ to meet with a few other stakeholders and adjust timetable when it became clear on Monday that three days to the Special Delegate Congresses, a committee to that effect was yet to be constituted.

A newly constituted committee is also supposed to be briefed preparatory to the Special Congresses. ”All these cannot happen between now and Thursday, hence the change,” a chieftain of the party in Osun State said Monday night.

”The adjusted timetable will now allow the party to set up the Special Congresses Committee and organise a brief workshop on the modalities for them.”

TNG also gathered that a new Timetable ,which will likely be made public on Tuesday, will announce new dates for all congresses except that of the Presidency which still holds between May 30 and June 1, 2022.

According to the new timetable being proposed, Congresses to elect Local Government Area, State and National Delegates will hold May 16 to May 17, 2022; Primary Election for governorship candidates will hold on Friday May 20, 2022; State House of Assembly, Sunday May 22; House of Representatives, Tuesday May 24; Senate, Wednesday May 25.

An Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka on Wednesday issued Interlocutory Injunction restraining the All Progressives Congress (APC) from conducting Ward and local government congresses in the state.

Justice Ike Ogu of High Court four, Awka made the order following application by 18 APC Local Government chairmen and other chieftains pending the determination of a matter in suit number A/33/22 before it.

The APC led by Senator Andy Uba had earlier announced that ward congresses would commence in the state from January 26 before the local government congresses in the 21 Local Government Areas.

But one Lawrence Emegini, Obed Chuks and 16 others approached the court seeking an order barring the congresses in the area.

Mr Chukwuma Agufugo, secretary of the party in the state told journalists in Awka on Wednesday that the party was not aware of any congress going in the state today.

Agufugo said that the executives of the party and some chieftains went to court to challenge planned move by some people to conduct illegal congress.

Thugs invade venue of Zamfara PDP congress, destroy vehicles, chairs, canopies

Some political thugs on Monday attacked the venue of the Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Congress.

The programme initially slated for the Zaitun Oil mill, behind State Pilgrim Board has been moved to the Command Guest House in Gusau, the state capital.

According to reports, the thugs invaded the venue in the early hours of Monday and destroyed the voting materials, nomination forms, two vehicles belonging to party members, chairs and set canopies ablaze.

The Personal Secretary to Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Umar Aminu said the party will not be intimidated by the incident, noting that the congress will still go ahead as scheduled.

He said the hoodlums are unknown but assured security agencies will investigate.

It is not certain which political party is responsible for the attack on the PDP facility in the north-western state.

Despite the attack, the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Barrister Mahdi Aliyu Gusau and the Caretaker Chairman of the party, Ambassador Bala Mande have arrived the new venue of the congress.

  • Lagos PDP disagrees over aborted congress

Lagos PDP disagrees over aborted congress

Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, a contender for the position of Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the party’s congress was disrupted on Saturday because of a “Unity’’ list.

The main opposition party’s state congress became inconclusive following disagreement on the delegates’ list for accreditation.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday, Pearse, said: “the Lagos State PDP Congress was disrupted when a “Unity’’ was brought to the congress venue.

“The list had one Dr Fawole as the preferred candidate for Lagos State PDP Chairman, excluding popular candidates.

“Delegates became alarmed when they saw people using the list to fill their ballot papers and felt that the result of the congress had been pre-determined by the preferred list.’’

According to him, the apparent compromise of fair and open election led to protest and a mass walkout by delegates.

“For me this is the end of the line. I will no longer stand aside and watch any leader disenfranchise me and other members of the party,’’ he stated.

Sen. Abiodun Olujimi, Secretary, Electoral Committee, had said on Saturday that all was set to go on with the congress before it was disrupted.

Olujimi, who had earlier assured delegates of fairness and adherence to law and order, said it was obvious that some were not ready for the congress to go on.

“We have been able to do accreditation for 18 local government areas out of 20 LGAs. We want to start voting. It is clear that some people don’t want this process to go on.

“Some want it truncated and it is also very clear that others want to vote so there is a clash of interests.

“We must go, although all through Friday we tried to resolve it but we couldn’t; if not we would have just come to read out the list.

“People are bad losers; when they lose they find it difficult to accept and that was why we tried to reconcile and see if there could be consensus,” she had said.

Meanwhile, outgoing PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, in a statement on Sunday in Lagos blamed the aborted congress on gunshots at the congress venue by hoodlums.

Gani said that the PDP was having a “unity congress’’ with all interests converged at the venue when hoodlums disrupted the exercise.

“The chairman of the committee had started giving out ballot papers to the delegates to start voting when suddenly gunshots were heard from different angles.

“The delegates were orderly until after the gunshots which scared a lot to leave the venue. We do not believe these gunshots came from PDP members.

“The shooters can only be our political opponents. We charge the Police to fish out these persons,’’ the spokesman said.

Gani said that the Lagos PDP State Congress Electoral Committee had gone ahead to declare the congress as aborted and a new date would be announced.

Messrs Philips Aivoji, Niyi Adams, Hakeem Amode, Dr Amos Fawole and Pearse are vying for the chairmanship position.
