28-years-old Caleb Otagba on Sunday received  N250,000 cash prize as winner of the maiden Suya eating competition ever in Nigeria.

The competition was organised by Sooya Bristo, a one-stop Suya culinary restaurant in partnership with Lost In Lagos, one of the leading premier discovery platforms to commemorate opening of Sooyah Bristo, Lekki branch in Lagos.

Over 30 contestants competed in various stages of the keenly competition before Otagba emerged winner.

Otagba, a staff of PCV Cleaning Service in Lagos, expressed excitement and thanked God, the organisers of the competition, his family and supporters for providing the platform that gave him an opportunity to win and make money.

He explained that  Suya might not be his most favourite dish but he enjoyed food, grilled, and other creative spiced suya.

“This is my second win for the year, as i have earlier emerged winner of the Burgar contest organised by Lost In Lagos and am so grateful to God and hopeful of more wins before the end of the year.

“I love anything food and have discovered that my strength operates optimally during any contest.

” I appreciate Sooyah Bristo for organising this competition and thank my family and supporters for their encouragement, ” he said.

Mrs Olamidun Ogundoyin, Founder, Sooyah Bristo, said the competition was organised to bring joy to people, especially the youths.

“Our goal is to be the biggest and best Nigerian food chain and to do that we need to foster growth through community development within our audience, who are the young Nigerians.

“Today we have organised the first ever suya eating contest in Nigeria to promote entertainment, authenticity and bringing young people together in an exciting way, in order to reward them through cash prize.

” We had planned to host 30 contestants and give out N250,000 to the fastest person that can eat suya but today more than100 participants showed up just to eat ,have fun and showcase their skills ,” she said.

According to her, Sooyah Bristo, a quick service restaurant chain based on suya was established for creating innovation on the regular Nigeria street food called suya.

Ogundoyin noted that suya had been eating in a regular way for ages, hence a need for an innovation in that space.

She explained that the restaurant had developed unique food around suya, such as suya burgar, suya signature rice, suya crep, suya melt, suya signature spaghetti, suya stir fried rice, and much more.

The Sooya Bristo boss stated that the company which began operation in Lagos in 2018, had grown very fast to open eight branches across the state, while working to begin operation in other states across the country.

Ogundoyin said that as against the myth regarding suya, that suya is protein and we all needed protein in our diet, adding that it is a lean tasty meat but should be prepared, served, and eaten in very clean and healthy environment.

“We prepare our suya in the most hygienic way and always ensure that the area is clean, the meat is healthily sourced from the supply chain, through processing, preparation, and delivery of the food,” she said.

Ms Victoria Agorye, Business Manager, Sooya Bristo,  said over 700 applicants applied for the competition online and the company was happy for the massive turn out, while hoping to sustain the competition.

Agorye explained that while eating suya was not bad as speculated, some Nigerians were scared of eating vulture or illegitimate meat posed as suya and as such, preferred to avoid the food.

She warned Nigerians to be wary of where they bought their suya and rather patronise professional restaurants trained in the business of the food to promote healthiness.

A contestant, Ms Favour Zubi from Surulere area of Lagos state,  expressed joy for making it to the semi- final stage of the competition.

Zubi said she had been patronising Sooyah Bristo for long, as against roadside vendors because their suya was usually prepared in the most hygienic environment,  and as such,  safe to be eaten.

“You will not even see the suya during preparation until delivery and their environment is always so neat. I love suya, especially with moist pepper and other creative methods of preparation, ” she said.

2019 General Elections: Competent defectors can contest – APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC had said defectors from other political parties that have the required credentials for whatever office they so which to vie for would be allowed to contest on its platform in 2019.

Recall that TheNewsGuru.com had reported that former Senate President, Ken Nnamani on Sunday, in Enugu State, resigned membership of his former political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the APC.

Reacting, APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, assured that the party would accommodate the defectors.

A report by the Leadership Newspapers quoted Abdullahi as saying: “We are happy that people across the political spectrum are buying into the philosophy of progressive politics.”

“We are aware of some concerns that may arise as a result of this, but we will look into all of them to ensure that all issues are effectively managed.”

Also, deputy national chairman (South), Engr Segun Oni, said the defections into APC will not cause any problems.

“It is our responsibility as a party to ensure that we check for what caused the ‘sunset’, as it were, for the PDP.

“When we were with the party then, most of us were of the opinion that every product has a life cycle and when it reaches a peak, if not properly managed, it can only come down therefrom.

“But as a party, we will take the right lessons and ensure that the issues that the PDP encountered are not replicated in this case”.

On aspirations of the defectors ahead of the 2019 election, Oni said: “In the first case, every member is a member. If you meet the criteria as a bona fide member, you can aspire.

“That is why we have to have the right management culture to be able to screen and field the right persons for the job,” Oni said.

Recall also that TheNewsGuru.com had reported of mass defection of members of the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP across the country to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC over its leadership crisis.

  • Anxiety as Ghana goes to poll in keenly contested presidential election

Anxiety as Ghana goes to poll in keenly contested presidential election

…The race is tight with President John Mahama and his rival Nana Akufo Addo running neck and neck in opinion polls

Ghanaians are casting their ballots in neck and neck presidential and parliamentary polls, held at a time of economic woes and corruption scandals that have eroded President John Mahama’s lustre.

Mahama’s main rival is veteran politician and former foreign minister, Nana Akufo-Addo. The winner of Wednesday’s (today) election will serve a four-year term in a formerly booming country that has seen its economy sputter, currency deteriorate and inflation soar.

There are some 15 million registered voters. Polling started at 07:00 GMT and will close at 17:00 GMT across the West African country.

An exporter of gold and cocoa, and one of Africa’s most successful oil exporters, Ghana was once hailed as a regional growth model but has now taken on too much debt.

There are seven candidates battling for the top job and, if the smaller parties perform well and deny either man a majority, a presidential run-off will be held later in December.

Mahama, 58, is running for a second term, with Akufo-Addo, 72, making his third, and likely last, bid for the highest office.

Leaving nothing to chance on the last day of campaigning on Monday, Mahama held three rallies in the major swing regions of Brong-Ahafo, Ashanti and Greater Accra.

Mahama has announced several infrastructure projects during the campaign.

“Throughout the election campaign, the president approved a series of major and eye-catching infrastructure projects to prove to voters that government spending was not going to waste or being stolen,” said Al Jazeera’s Nicholas Haque, reporting from Accra.

“But the trouble is Ghana is spending more than it can afford. There are hospitals left half built. Despite pressing need for medical staff, the state can’t afford to pay nurses or doctors any more.”

    Corruption scandals

Akufo-Addo, on the other hand, has campaigned on Ghana’s poor economic growth, the slowest rate in two decades, at 3.3 percent in 2016, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and has outlined detailed plans to get the economy back on track.

He has lambasted Mahama’s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over a series of corruption scandals in which scores of judges have been implicated. Critics say he squandered the country’s commodity wealth and turned a blind eye to graft within his inner circle.

During his tenure, the Bank of Ghana controversially bought half a million dollars worth of gold Swiss watches for some of its staff.

The leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also alleged that the ruling party is fomenting violence, a claim Mahama denies.

But tension is rising in advance of the high-stakes election.

Police said an NPP supporter was beaten to death, with six others left in critical condition, in clashes between supporters of the two main parties after a rally in the north on Monday.

Elections in Ghana are famously closely fought, with Mahama narrowly winning in 2012 with 50.7 percent.
