Man Utd to hand Fernandes new double-your-money contract

Premier League club Manchester United are ready to hand Bruno Fernandes a new contract.

The Sun says the Portuguese midfielder has been the best player in the last two campaigns for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stuttering side but is way behind in the earnings charts.

He is expected to be handed a boost to his £100,000-a-week flat-rate wage.

He does earn more in incentives and bonuses, but is still way behind David De Gea, Paul Pogba and Co.

Fernandes is one of the lowest paid first-team players at Old Trafford, and is keen on a pay rise.

It is expected his money will go up to around £200,000-a-week flat, with extras on top of that for appearances, goals and trophies.

The ex-Sampdoria ace is only the seventh highest paid player, and earns only £20,000-a-week more than axed Juan Mata.

De Gea is on around £375,000-a-week, Pogba about £290,000 with Anthony Martial slightly behind.

Lionel Messi will sign Barca contract if…

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi won’t make a decision over his future until after the March 7 election.

Off contract in June, Messi is a confirmed target for Manchester City and PSG this summer.

And after the leaking of contract details last week, it was suggested Messi had had enough and would be packing his bags at the end of the season.

However, his biographer, Guillem Balague, insists the Argentine won’t decide anything until after a new president is voted in.

And if Joan Laporta wins a second spell in charge, it could see Messi being prepared to sign a new contract and stay.

  • National Arts Theatre, Lagos, to be transformed into a World Class Convention Centre

National Arts Theatre, Lagos, to be transformed into a World Class Convention Centre

The National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, is to be transformed into a World class Convention Centre and the contract for the transformation will be sealed in the next two weeks, the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has said.

Emefiele disclosed this good news yesterday while answering questions on the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting, which held in Abuja, yesterday.

According to him, all approvals are in place to renovate the structure of the National Arts Theatre and transform it into a world class Conventional Centre.

“All approvals are in place; we are hoping in the next couple of weeks, a contract will be awarded and the National Arts Theatre, by the grace of God, will wear a new look,” Emefiele said.

He recalled the structure in 1977 was commissioned and used for the Festival of Arts and Culture, FESTAC, but was saddened by the fact that it was allowed to decay.

“National Arts Theatre was commissioned and used for the FESTAC, 1977. We have visited that magnificent structure, yes, it’s totally dilapidated but the structure can compete with any conventional Centre that you will find in any part of the world.

“So it is painful that we allowed that infrastructure to decay to the level that it is,” he said.

Emefiele also said that no conventional centres in the world was a match to the national Art theatre adding that he had not seen any in all the IMF and World Bank’s meetings that he had so far attended.

He said that the Bankers Committee would fund the renovation of the structure, given the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The CBN governor said that four structures would also be built to support the creative arts activities of the Nigerian youths.

Besides, he believed that a new and improved national arts theatre would be launched by the president, before 2023.

Recall that the Federal Government, in July 2020, officially handed over the National Theatre in Lagos to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the the Bankers’ Committee for renovation.

Emefiele had said at the handover that Nigeria had the potential to earn over $20bn annually from the creative industry and that the creative industry centre was expected to create over 1 million jobs in five years.

“Our goal for the National Theatre is to create an environment where startups and existing businesses are rewarded for their creativity,” Emefiele had said.

Sergio Ramos rejects new Madrid contract offer

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has rejected a new contract offer.

Marca says Ramos and Real Madrid are still a long way away in their negotiations for the captain’s contract extension.

The defender and Florentino Perez haven’t been able to come to an agreement, and Saturday’s meeting at Valdebebas has led to a lot of tension. The pair had unsuccessful discussions prior to the game against Celta Vigo, and again met in the tunnel just before the players stepped onto the pitch.

A one-year offer is on the table with no change to his salary, but Ramos is still pushing for two years, and for the salary reduction not to be included, as he wants that to be discussed rather than implemented without his say.

Now, there are no new meetings set in the calendar, and the player is allowed to talk to other clubs ahead of making a free transfer this coming summer.

I won’t ask for new Madrid contract – Zidane

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane says a new contract isn’t on his mind.

The Frenchman has managed to turn around the team’s recent crisis with four wins on the bounce that has their outlook in both LaLiga Santander and the Champions League appearing a lot brighter.

“I have nothing in mind, I have a contract until 2022 and I will not ask for anything,” he told the press.

“I am fortunate to say that I am at the best club in the world. I hope the players stay.”

He was not only asked about his own future, but that of his captain Sergio Ramos.

“He is looking well, because he is convinced that he will continue and that is the most important thing. I see him playing football for many years because he is someone who takes great care of himself,” Zidane said of his skipper.

“If you want to continue and take care of yourself, you have a great chance of continuing for a long time and I’m not surprised by what he does.”

  • Why I signed new City contract – Guardiola

Why I signed new City contract – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has discussed his new contract today.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Olympique Marseille, Guardiola was asked about his new three-year contract.

He said, “The reason why I extended my contract is the club. The PL is fantastic and always has been, around the world it has a special attraction for everyone to watch. I have a feeling we are going to do good things together for the next years.”

Guardiola was also asked if his tactics have been worked out by rival managers.

Reflecting on defeat to Tottenham, he continued: “Do you think we change from the first season? The first action was not a counter, they ran two times in 90 minutes and the second one they were brilliant. We conceded one, two counter-attacks, another was offside and no more.

“We shot more, crossed more, didn’t concede a corner. We cannot expect to create a lot against Tottenham but even with that we tried to find a way but even with that we created. Aside from Liverpool, all teams defend so deep and we have to find a way to avoid but I don’t think counter-attacks are the big problem, I think the fluidity to attack is the target that we and I have to improve to know exactly what we have to do.”

David Alaba blasts Bayern chief for contract announcement

David Alaba has blasted Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer for announcing their new contract offer has been withdrawn.

Alaba, who has been at Bayern since 2008, sees his current deal expire at the end of June next year. Hainer said that the club withdrew their offer a new five-year deal for Alaba after the player’s agent turned down their latest proposal.

“I heard it like everyone else on the news,” Alaba, linked with Liverpool and Real Madrid, told a press conference ahead of their game at Salzburg in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“I cannot say how it will continue from this point. I am glad to be playing for Bayern, and to be a part of the team. But what the future will look like after yesterday evening I just cannot say, as no one has talked to me officially.

“I can completely understand the fans. I wish internal stuff would stay internal. The numbers out there do not correspond to reality and I am a bit disappointed and sad that the club never officially came out to say they are wrong.’

Asked about a possible move to the English Premier League, Alaba said: “I have not made any thoughts about my future because Bayern was always the first point of contact. I had no contact with other clubs for that reason.”
