Ex-NDDC Boss clarifies Keyamo’s involvement in water hyacinth contract

The former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Joy Nunieh, has absolved the former Minister of State for NDDC, Festus Keyamo, of involvement in the controversial water hyacinth contract.

She made the clarification in Abuja on Friday after appearing before the Senate Ad Hoc Committee investigating the operations of the commission.

Nunieh, however, insisted that the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio got a total of 30 water hyacinth contracts from the NDCC shortly after he was inaugurated as minister.

“I can tell the world that Godswill Akpabio got 30 contracts to clear water hyacinth in the Niger Delta region shortly after he was inaugurated as minister.

“The then Minister of State, Festus Keyamo, was however not involved in the said contract and there are documents to show how the contracts were given.

“No contract is awarded and or payment made in the NDDC without the knowledge of Godswill Akpabio.

“I stand by everything I said at the National Assembly and I want Nigerians to know that I was removed from the NDDC because I refused to swear an oath of loyalty to Godswill Akpabio.

“I also refused to do his biddings and that led to serious disagreement between the two of us. I stood my ground and refused to use my position as MD to satisfy the financial gluttony of Godswill Akpabio and that was why he removed me from office.”

  • La Liga: Messi unwilling to renew Barca contract

La Liga: Messi unwilling to renew Barca contract

FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has called off negotiations over renewing his contract with the club, according to a report by Spanish radio station Cadena Ser on Friday.

The report added that the Argentina captain was even ready to leave the Catalans when his current deal expires in 2021.

It said Messi and his father Jorge had begun discussing renewing his last deal with the club, which was signed in 2017. “But he no longer wishes to stay at the Camp Nou.’’

The report added that Messi was angry about leaked media reports which appeared to make him seem responsible for events at the club.

Two of such are those about the January sacking of coach Ernesto Valverde, and that he is frustrated about the squad’s lack of quality.

The Argentine’s representatives and FC Barcelona did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Messi, who turned 33 last month, scored his 700th career goal on Tuesday against Atletico Madrid.

But the milestone strike ended in disappointment as Barca drew the game 2-2 in the latest blow to their bid to retain the Spanish title.

Barca trail Real Madrid by four points in the title race with five games remaining after Real beat Getafe 1-0 on Thursday.

Previously known for his shy personality off the pitch, Messi has become more vocal in his criticism of the club in the last year.

In January he hit out at sporting director Eric Abidal, who he said had implied players had led to Valverde being sacked.

In a February interview with newspaper Mundo Deportivo, he declared the team were not good enough to win this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Then in April he criticised the board for implying players were not willing to accept a pay cut to help the team’s financial difficulties during the coronavirus pandemic.

EPL: Luiz seeking two-year contract for Arsenal stay

Arsenal defender David Luiz is seeking a new two-year contract at Emirates.

The club can propose a temporary extension until the end of the season or activate an automatic 12-month renewal clause inserted into the player’s contract.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Arsenal do not want to pay Luiz his £120,000-a-week wages for another season.

The coronavirus pandemic is biting the club’s finances hard, prompting a ten per cent pay cut agreed by the vast majority of the squad during football’s shutdown.

A new contract on reduced terms may be on the table yet Mikel Arteta’s side still favour a single year for the 33-year-old.

  • Brescia to terminate Balotelli’s contract for missing training

Brescia to terminate Balotelli’s contract for missing training

Brescia are set to terminate Mario Balotelli’s contract after the Italy striker failed to return to training ahead of Serie A’s restart this month, Italian media reported on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Balotelli signed a three-year contract with his hometown club last year after they earned promotion to the top flight for the first time since 2011.

Balotelli has earned a reputation as a troublemaker during his career.

It was a career in which he has played for Inter Milan, Manchester City, AC Milan, Liverpool, Nice and Olympique de Marseille, and won 36 international caps.

A television station had reported that Balotelli was involved in a row with Brescia president Massimo Cellino.

This was after the striker did not return to training when COVID-19 restrictions were eased in the country.

The report said Balotelli was offered a consensual termination, which he refused, and the club then sent a letter to his lawyer saying his contract would be ended.

Balotelli has scored five league goals in 19 appearances this season for a struggling Brescia side who are bottom of the league standings.

They are nine points from the safety zone with 12 games left.

Serie A, suspended on March 9 due to the coronavirus pandemic, is due to resume on June 20.

  • EPL: Arsenal table new contract offer to Aubameyang

EPL: Arsenal table new contract offer to Aubameyang

Arsenal have tabled a new contract offer to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

L’Equipe says Aubameyang’s situation at Arsenal is well known by now.

The club captain is yet to sign a contract extension and, with his current deal up in 2021, Arsenal will have to consider selling him or risk losing him on a free next summer.

While Arsenal are set for tough times regarding their finances, the Gunners have in fact offered Aubameyang a new deal – but whether he signs it is another matter.

Auba is 30, and will likely be assessing Arsenal’s chances of winning silverware as his career begins to wind down.

A summer exit is perhaps the most likely option, but nothing is set in stone.

  • Why I allowed renewal of Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr’s contract – Sports Minister

Why I allowed renewal of Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr’s contract – Sports Minister

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development Mr. Sunday Dare, on Sunday, revealed why he consented to the
    renewal of Gernot Rohr’s contract.

The minister in a statement by his Senior Special Media Adviser, Mr. Joshua Akanji, said the Super Eagles coach’s contract was renewed because he deserved to be given the right of first refusal.

However, the sports minister added that it would not be business as usual.

He insisted that the coach would be held to a higher depth of responsibility, a greater depth of technicality, and a greater level of success where he could have his contract reviewed if he falls short of the direction outlined in the terms of his new contract.

Before the contract between the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and Gernot Rohr was renewed, speculations were rife that the minister of sports wasn’t favorably disposed to the contract renewal.

At a point, former England Manager, Harry Redknapp was linked with the Super Eagles job.

However, the Minister said he was not averse to the contract extension but insisted that Nigerians must get results if the coach is to remain in charge of the national team.

He said “The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is statutorily in charge of the growth and development of football in Nigeria under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“Even before I became Minister, there are processes and procedures that are followed when it comes to bringing on a new national coach or renewing the contract of a coach who is already in the house and I think it was important for us to follow the processes and procedures in place.

“For Rohr, because he had been signed on earlier, he deserved to be given the right of first refusal, that was what the NFF did and that was what I also allowed to happen.

“It is best practices, it is global practices but the NFF also had a review of his performance in the last three to four years and based on that review, his new contract had new conditions that never existed before.

“Some of them bordering on the mode of payment, some of them bordering technical issues regarding the development of our football, and that to me is fundamental.”

  • Rohr to sign new Super Eagles contract

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is expected to sign a new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation next week.

Rohr has been locked in discussion with the NFF over an extension to his current contract which is expected to end in June.

The NFF insisted on inserting several clauses in Rohr’s new contract which the German trainer seems ready to abide with.

“The executive committee mandated the general secretary to liase with Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr, with a view to concluding all matters around his new contract within the next one week,” according to a statement by the NFF.

The 66-year-old took charge of the Super Eagles in 2016 and qualified the three-time African champions to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Super Eagles however failed to progress beyond the group stage at the competition.

Rohr also led the Super Eagles to a third place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

  • NFF shouldn’t have made Rohr’s contract public – Akanni

A former Chairman of Lagos State Football Association, Mr. Wahidi Akanni said the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been unfair to Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles’ Head Coach.

According to Akanni, the public disclosure of terms and conditions of a possible renewal of Rohr’s contract by the NFF was unnecessary.

Earlier, NFF President Amaju Pinnick had said Rohr would be handed a new contract to sign if he agreed to the terms.

Akanni, an ex-international, said that making Rohr’s contract public as Pinnick did would only mean that the two parties had not been communicating effectively.

“I think, with the back and forth media correspondences between NFF and Rohr, it is obvious that both are not talking.

“A contract between an employee and his employer should not be in the public for that matter. Changing terms in an employment contract also should not be a problem if it’s acceptable by the employee.

“But, while we hope this will be resolved quickly and amicably, one must acknowledge that NFF has no right to make the contract public because this will bring in a lot of negative sentiments against the coach,” he said.

  • PSG to upgrade Neymar wages to £640,000-a-week

PSG to upgrade Neymar wages to £640,000-a-week

Ligue 1 giant Paris Saint-Germain aim to ward off all rivals by upgrading Neymar’s contract.

Mundo Deportivo says PSG will offer Neymar a new contract worth a staggering £33million a year to persuade him to snub a Barcelona return.

The Brazilian star has been regularly linked with a move back to the Nou Camp, where he played for Barcelona between 2013 and 2017 before a world-record £198m move to Paris.

But PSG sporting director Leonardo will make an effort to tie him to the club until 2025 with a deal worth £640,000 a week.

The new deal would bring Neymar’s salary closer to those of the only two footballers in the world who earn more than him – Lionel Messi at Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus.

  • Arsenal in problem over Aubameyang’s contractual situation

Arsenal in problem over Aubameyang’s contractual situation

Arsenal management are facing a dilemma over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contractual situation.

The Telegraph says Arsenal have been left with a “headache” over Aubameyang’s contractual situation amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the striker set to become a free agent next year.

As per the Bosman ruling, they will be eligible to negotiate a free move abroad at the turn of the year.

And Aubameyang has left Arsenal sweating over his potential contract extension.

The 30-year-old, who has scored 17 goals in 26 Premier League appearances this term, is entering the final year of his Gunners deal.

It is believed Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in signing him, with Zinedine Zidane reportedly informing the player that he is a target for Los Blancos when the transfer window reopens.
