“Nigerian Messi” Amoo faces controversy as agency denies jail sentence, threatens legal action

Akinkunmi Amoo, the former Golden Eaglets winger who has recently been involved in a high-profile court case in Denmark, is now facing further developments in the ongoing saga.

Popularly known as the “Nigerian Messi,” Amoo was found guilty of indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a sexual relationship other than intercourse by a Danish court, resulting in a one-year jail sentence.

However, his Nigeria representative, UDE Sports Management Agency, has strongly reacted to the news, threatening legal action against Nigerian media outlets that disclosed Amoo’s name as the convict, disregarding the name ban imposed by the Danish court.

Chairman of UDE Sports Uche Dominic Egbukwu, expressed outrage and demanded an unreserved apology from the media outlets within 72 hours to avoid legal consequences.

Under the Nigerian Cybercrime Act 2015, publishing fake news is considered a punishable offense with a minimum penalty of three years.

On Friday, June 23, 2023, the Danish court delivered an unconditional one-year prison sentence, accompanied by deportation from Denmark and a six-year ban from reentering the country.

However, UDE Sports vehemently denied the accuracy of the reports, asserting that Amoo was still training with his club, FC Copenhagen.

Egbukwu stated, “I have spoken to my player and his club officials, and they have confirmed to me that the news about his conviction and jail sentence is not the correct narrative. He is presently training with the club.” He also mentioned that an appeal has been filed, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the case.

He further expressed disappointment with the Nigerian media for spreading what he considers false narratives, highlighting the name ban in the Danish press as the reason for Amoo’s inability to provide an official statement.

In addition, the player’s elder brother Sunday Amoo, also debunked the report of Akinkunmi being sentenced to prison, clarifying that he is not incarcerated and is scheduled to resume training after recovering from an injury.

According to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, the verdict was delivered on June 23, 2023, by a dissenting magistrate in the Copenhagen District Court.

Amoo’s arrest took place on September 10, 2022, and he was released on bail on October 7. The trial, which received significant media attention due to Amoo’s football prowess, spanned most of June.

As the sentence was announced, Amoo was reportedly visibly shaken in the courtroom as he received an unconditional one-year prison sentence.

Despite objections from Ekstra Bladet, the name ban in the case was extended due to the appeal filed by the defense and the convicted party.

Amoo’s appeal will provide an opportunity for a higher court to review and reevaluate the case.

  • Drama, controversy trail APC’s nationwide congresses

Drama, controversy trail APC’s nationwide congresses

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday held ward congresses across the country to choose party executives.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that there was repeated calls in some quarters for a postponement of the congresses over the legality of the Governor Mai Buni-led Caretaker Committee to hold the congresses. However, the party insisted that the congresses would hold as scheduled but read the riot act its conduct.

TNG gathered that President Muhammadu Buhari sensing a possible legal fallout after the congresses directed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to assemble the legal giants in his administration to check for potholes and possible way out.

The party in a notice to its chieftains by the Secretary, National Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Senator John Akpan-Udoedehe, warned that the party would invoke necessary disciplinary measures on those who hold parallel congresses.

He reminded them of the National Executive Committee’s resolution, which directed members not to take the party to court unless it has exhausted “the internal mechanism for conflict resolution, as enshrined in the party’s constitution.”

Senator Akpan-Udoedehe insisted that the resolution still subsists and extends to the conduct of party members during the congresses.

However, the congresses did not go without hiccups as some states have been split into factions, while others adopted consensus candidates.

In the southwest, there were talks of a parallel congress in Osun State while members have agreed on a consensus option in Oyo and Ondo states.

In Lagos, a decision was yet to be made on a consensus candidate, as of the time of this reporting.

A Senator Magnus Abe faction in Rivers State said it would boycott the exercise.

Meanwhile, the party has postponed its congresses in Anambra and Zamfara states.

Aggrieved youths torch party secretariat in Akwa Ibom

Crisis has rocked the ward congresses of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom following the alleged insistence of National Secretary of the party’s Caretaker Committee Senator John Akpanudoedehe to have a consensus arrangement.

A group known as the APC Elders Forum led by a former military administrator of Rivers and Ogun states, Group Captain Sam Ewang(retd), had called for free and fair elective ward congresses instead of a consensus.

However, the congresses, which were supposed to take place in the 329 wards in the state, did not hold due to the absence of election materials.

According to reports, materials for the congresses did not arrive at the party secretariat even as National officers from Abuja were not sent to conduct the congresses.

Angered by the situation, youths of the party went on rampage on Saturday setting ablaze some sections of the state party Secretariat located along Ikot Ekpene.

The party’s flags were also torched.

The youths carried placards with the inscription, ”Udodehe you can’t hijack our party” and ”We want a free and fair congresses not consensus” among others.

A member of the party from Etinan local government area, Mr. UduakAbasi Ikpatt said there were no congresses in any of the wards in Etinan due to the absence of materials.

Ikpatt blamed Udoedehe for the situation insisting that the right thing must be done if the party is to remain one ahead of the 2023 elections in the state.

However, spokesperson of the party in the state, Nkereuwem Enyongekere, said the ward congresses went on smoothly without any hitch.

”The congresses took place in the 329 ward centres and not at the APC state secretariat in Uyo so what materials are they complaining about?

”The congresses have been concluded. If you want video clips of my own I will send it to you.

On allegation of Udoedehe trying to hijack the party, Enyongekere said: ”Hijack what? This is the most transparent congress ever conducted in Akwa Ibom state, very democratic. Otherwise from the inception of this state it has always been writing of names”.

Mild drama in Kwara as members reject consensus agreement, opt for election

There was mild drama at Badari ward of Ilorin South local government area of Kwara State during the congress.

Against the general grain of consensus arrangement in picking candidates by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq- led APC in the state, members of the ward opted for election.

They accused some APC executives of trying to impose a candidate on them, adding original list of candidates for respective offices had been doctored.

Attempts by APC coordinator Tunde Aluko at the venue to convince the people for a consensual arrangement met with brick walls.

The intervention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officers at the Oja-Iya ECWA Primary School, venue of the exercise saved the situation from degenerating into rancor.

INEC’s intervention made the people to settle for election as the people queued behind their choice candidate for the ward chairman Abdullahi Ibrahim.

Speaking on why they opted for election instead of consensus, a member of the ward said: “we opted for election because we realised that some people in the party wanted to impose their candidates on us.

“During membership registration and revalidation, it was this our candidate that arranged how all of us got to the venue of the exercise at Ipata Oloje.

“This man along with the women leader in the ward has been has always been there for all APC members in the ward. That is the truth that is why we have all resolved that he must return unopposed.”

Ibrahim said: “Before this time around some people in the party approached me to step down but I told them that decision would come from majority of the ward members.

“However, over 95 percent of the electorates want me to continue. Any attempt not to accede to their clarion call would amount to arrogance.

“I am 100 percent in support of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for another four years in office.”

In other parts of the State, congress reportedly took off peacefully and orderly across various parts of Kwara State with thousands of party loyalists, including INEC officials, APC representatives from Abuja, lawmakers and government appointees participating.

  • Obaseki sparks nationwide controversy over claims FG printed N60bn to augment depleted March allocation

Obaseki sparks nationwide controversy over claims FG printed N60bn to augment depleted March allocation

Ever since Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki raised the alarm that Nigeria might collapse economically because of global shrinking oil revenue which happens to be the nation’s mainstay, Nigerians have continued to question the federal government fiscal policies.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Governor Obaseki revealed that the federal government printed about N60 billion to augment the federation allocation shared with states and local governments in March.

Besides, Obaseki, during a meeting with the Transition Committee members at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital during the week revealed that by December this year, the country’s total borrowing would be in excess of 15 to 16 trillion.

“In another year or so, where will we find this money that we go to Abuja to share every month? Last month, we got FAAC for March. The federal government printed an additional 50 to 60 billion to top-up for us to share,” he said.

The governor believed, very soon, there would be no crude oil revenue, accruing to the national treasury for spending, with the dwindling fortunes of oil.

Emphasising that despite the prices of crude at the international market, the current fortunes of crude is only a mirage and the Nigerian economy could no longer rely on oil revenue. According to him, major oil producers like Shell and Chevron, which hitherto made huge financial commitment to oil production, are no longer investing as much, especially with Chevron was heavily investing in alternative fuel and Shell pulling out of Nigeria.

He, therefore asked, where will the federal government find the oil revenue to share monthly as federal allocation among the three tiers of government?

“We say remove subsidy, they say no. This April, next week again, we will go to Abuja and share. By the end of this year, the total borrowing is going to be in excess of 15 to 16 trillion.

“My worry is that we will wake up one day like Argentina, the naira will be 1,000, 2,000 and will be moving because we don’t have money coming in. You are just borrowing, borrowing and borrowing without any means or idea of how to pay back.”

Obaseki pointed that the change in the world economy which is now affecting Nigeria, would be the major factor that will affect the country’s economy going forward.

Reacting to the governor’s revelation, Nigerians took to their social media accounts to question the federal government sincerity in fixing the nation and making the economy buoyant to survive during challenging times.

    #BBNaija:Controversies trail Sunday evictions result

Several controversies have trailed BBNaija’s Sunday eviction results, as concerns raised from various quarters suggest the results might have been ‘rigged’.

This is the first time the show, which is in its third season, has been accused of tampering with votes for gains and ratings.

Prior to the show, several viewers on Twitter had suggested that they knew what the results were going to be, due to perceived ‘favouritism’ on the part of the organisers.

    A Twitter handle @BBNaija Leaks wrote on Saturday, “So as we promised informing you On This Week Leaked Result;

    1st-Nina

    2nd-Teddy A

    3rd-Cee c

    4th-BamBam

“Which One or Two of the names above would be evicted from the #BBNaija Game.”

Few hours later, the same handle tweeted, “So information just got to us that due to our accurate leaks, Teddy A would be the victim(eviction) of a flipped script tonight ’cause @BBNaija and his crew are trying to save face.”

In response to the trending ‘leaks’, host of the show Ebuka Obi-Uchendu tweeted @Ebuka, “Predictions are not leaks.”

However, on Sunday, the show came under ‘fire’ again when a viewer calculated the votes gotten by each nominated housemates and revealed that they did not add up to hundred per cent.

According to the votes, Nina had 44.00 per cent, CeeC had 24.38 per cent, Teddy A had 16.81 per cent and BamBam gathered 13.37 per cent.

Highlighting the errors, a viewer @ib_Granville tweeted, “See what was wrong with last night’s results

    1) Votes don’t sum up to 100%.

    2) Wrong display, it’s usually in form of a bar chart with their names, not pictures.

    3) That’s not the official portrait for BamBam, a different picture was used.

    @BBNaija ???”

Minutes later, show organisers responded to the queries through their official Instagram handle @bigbronaija, writing: “Dear viewers, an incorrect percentage was published for Nina during this night’s eviction show.

“While we deeply regret this error, we wish to state that the audited and verified percemtage for Nina is 45.44 per cent as opposed to the previously published 44 per cent.

“We thank you for your usual support and understanding,” they said.

Viewers, however, have expressed deep concerns over the authencity of the show results, some fearing that their favorites might be affected.

Despite the apology issued by the show organisers some other viewers have taken to social media to table their disappointments.

@isibor.grace wrote on Instagram, “I hope you won’t make mistake to announce the real winner.”

@joy.oj wrote, “How many other housemates have you done this to? You decided to post this because you were called out for the missing 1.44 per cent. Continue.”

Meanwhile, Nina, CeeC, Tobi, Miracle, Lolu, Anto, Alex, Rico Swavey and Khloe are left to battle for the star prize worth 45 million naira.
