  • Messi stars as Argentina beat Italy 3-0 in Finalissima

Lionel Messi stole the show as Copa America holders Argentina powered to a 3-0 win against European champions Italy in the Finalissima at Wembley on Wednesday.

Inspired by the peerless Messi, Argentina raced into a two-goal lead in the first half of the prestigious friendly thanks to strikes from Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria.

Paulo Dybala capped Argentina’s rout, but after a disappointing season with Paris Saint-Germain by his sky-high standards, it was the sight of Messi back to his imperious best that took the spotlight.

    Messi

The 34-year-old’s eye-catching display featured two assists and was worthy of his rare appearance at one of football’s great cathedrals.

It was another memorable moment for Argentina, who have qualified for this year’s World Cup as they extend the golden afterglow from the victory over Brazil that ended their 28-year wait to win the Copa America in 2021.

Argentina were already established as one of the leading contenders to win the World Cup and defeating Italy was another statement of intent from La Albiceleste, who are now unbeaten in 32 matches.

If Messi can play at this level in Qatar, Lionel Scaloni’s side will be a force to be reckoned with as they chase a first World Cup title since 1986.

    Messi

For Italy, it was a disappointing return to Wembley 11 months after they beat England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final.

Roberto Mancini’s team have gone into a steep decline since that memorable triumph.

They failed to qualify for the World Cup after suffering a humiliating loss to North Macedonia in their play-off semi-final.

Mancini admitted the Finalissima represented the “end of a cycle” for his European champions.

After the World Cup failure, Mancini is transitioning to a younger generation, with the forthcoming Nations League matches against Germany, England and Hungary his real focus.

    Messi

Mancini’s overhaul effectively started at half-time when Italy said farewell to 117-cap skipper Giorgio Chiellini, who was substituted in his final game before international retirement.

    Lionel Messi masterpiece
This was only the third Finalissima contest between the respective champions of Europe and South America and the first since Diego Maradona’s Argentina beat Denmark in 1993.

Fittingly, Messi -the heir to the legendary Maradona -used the occasion to remind the world of his astonishing talents.

The 80,000 sell-out crowd created a colourful backdrop for Messi’s mastery, with Argentina’s raucous fans turning the north London suburb of Brent into Buenos Aires for one ear-splitting evening.

Every touch from Messi lifted the decibel levels and moments after his shot was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, the forward played a key role as Argentina took the lead in the 28th minute.

Messi worked his magic on the touchline, showing tremendous strength to hold off Giovanni Di Lorenzo before unfurling a precise low cross to Martinez, who applied the finishing touch from close-range.

Italy argued that the goal should have been disallowed for a foul in the build-up, but their protests were in vain.

With tempers still running high, Leonardo Bonucci was booked after leaving Messi writhing in pain with a flailing arm that caught him in the face.

Di Maria exacted revenge on Messi’s behalf in first half stoppage-time.

Martinez drove forward with bullish tenacity and slipped a perfectly weighted pass to Di Maria, with the PSG forward producing a finish to match the approach play as he clipped a cool finish over Donnarumma.

Di Maria almost struck again on the hour, but his curler was brilliantly tipped over by Donnarumma as it fizzed towards the far corner.

Messi robbed Jorginho and embarked on a mesmerising run that finished with a save from Donnarumma.

Messi’s name echoed around the stands as Argentina’s fans paid tribute to their idol’s latest masterpiece.

Dybala’s clinical strike in stoppage-time came via a deft Messi pass as the maestro provided one final flourish.

Messi on Copa America glory: No better moment than this

Barcelona captain Leo Messi is full of pride after leading Argentina to the Copa America final triumph.

Messi finally celebrated winning a major title with his country 16 years after his first cap after Angel Di Maria’s first half lob secured a 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Brazil in the final at the Maracana.

An international trophy had for a long time been the only trophy left to win for the 34-year-old icon after suffering final heartache in three previous Copa Americas and the 2014 World Cup.

Messi told TyC Sports: “The truth is that this is crazy. There would be no better moment than this. The happiness is immense, I knew that at some point it was going to happen. The happiness I feel right now indescribable.

“After the last Copa I told these players that they will be the future of the National Team. I was not mistaken, and now today we are champions.

“I had a lot of confidence in this group, which has grown in strength since the last Copa America. They are a group of very good people, who advance and do not complain.

“I’m very happy! I dreamed about this many times.”

Argentina beat Brazil for Copa America, Messi wins first title

Argentina ended their 28-year title drought on Saturday when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil for a record-equalling 15th Copa America.

The victory was a particular triumph for Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, who picked up his first ever title in a blue and white shirt after more than a decade of club and individual honours.

Messi finished the tournament’s joint top goalscorer with four goals and was elected joint best player along with Neymar.

But he was quiet throughout and uncharacteristically missed a golden opportunity to wrap the game up with two minutes remaining.

When the final whistle went, Argentina TV declared “Argentina Champions, Lionel Messi Champion!”

The victory was Argentina’s 15th Copa America triumph and means they draw level with Uruguay as the all-time leading winners.

Their win extended their sequence of undefeated matches to 20 under Lionel Scaloni and handed Brazil their first competitive defeat since they lost to Belgium in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Di Maria started for just the second time in the Copa and he justified his selection by scoring the opener midway through the first half.

Renan Lodi failed to cut out a long ball forward from Rodrigo De Paul and Di Maria lobbed the stranded Ederson with aplomb.

Brazil piled on the pressure in an exciting second half but even with five strikers on the field they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul.

  • Maracana to partially open for fans for Copa America final

Rio de Janeiro’s city government has issued a decree allowing up to 6,500 fans to attend Copa America final match between Brazil and Argentina at the Maracana stadium.

Each sector of the iconic venue will be open at 10 percent capacity for Saturday’s match.

Also, fans will be forced to keep a distance of at least two meters, Rio’s official gazette said on Friday.

In addition, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) will be responsible for testing everyone who enters the stadium within 48 hours of the match.

Rio has banned supporters from attending matches since March 2020 as part of efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19.

An exception was made for the Copa Libertadores final in January when around 7,000 fans saw Palmeiras beat Santos 1-0.

“This is a one-off but it is also a test event for us. We’ll be taking great care and acting with caution,” city mayor Eduardo Paes told reporters.

Rio health secretary Daniel Soranz said CONMEBOL had asked that the Maracana be opened at 50 percent capacity, a request he described as “unreasonable”.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of more than half a million people in Brazil, the world’s second-highest death toll after the U.S.

More than 140 people associated with the Copa America tested positive for the virus in the first three weeks of the tournament, according to the Brazilian health ministry.

Neymar desperate to beat close friend Messi in Copa America final

Neymar will be putting his friendship with former FC Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi aside as he chases his first Copa America title with Brazil in Saturday’s final.

Brazil take on Argentina in the decider at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, with both players pursuing their first-ever continental crowns.

Messi’s Argentina have not won the Copa since 1993, while injury meant Neymar was not part of the Brazil squad which triumphed in 2019.

The pair have a close friendship from Neymar’s four years in Barcelona, while they have both dominated this Copa.

Messi leads the Copa with four goals and five assists, while Neymar has contributed two goals and three assists for hosts Brazil.

“Messi is, as I’ve always said, the best player I’ve ever seen play and he’s a great friend,” Neymar said.

“But now we’re in a final, we’re rivals. I want to win and I really want to win this title, which will be my first Copa America.

“Messi has been looking for his first title with the national team for many years, and every time we [Brazil] are not present at the tournament, I cheered for him.

“That’s what I’ve been cheering for in the 2014 World Cup final, when he faced Germany.

“Now Brazil is in the dispute, so our friendship is on the line [laughs]. The respect between us in still great but only one can win.”

He added: “When you’re friends with someone, it’s hard to forget the friendship you have… but for example when you play video games with a friend, you want to beat him anyway. It’ll be the same thing on Saturday.”

Neymar also hit out on Instagram about Brazilian fans who have turned on the national team and opted to support rivals Argentina.

“I’m Brazilian with a lot of pride, with a lot of love. My dream was always to be in the Brazilian national team and hear the fans singing,” he wrote.

“I’ve never supported or will support against anything Brazil is competing for, whatever the sport or modelling contest.”

Brazil are chasing their 10th Copa title, while Argentina are looking to end their 28-year wait to add to their 14 continental crowns.

Argentina have won five games in a row, including their semi-final victory over Colombia, and are unbeaten across their past 19 games.

Brazil are undefeated in their past 13 games and have only conceded two goals at Copa America 2021.

Lionel Messi scored one goal and provided two assists as Argentina kept alive their bid to end their 28-year Copa America title wait with a 3-0 quarter-final win over Ecuador.

Messi hit the post early before showing composure to find Rodrigo De Paul for his maiden international goal in the 40th minute in Goiania on Saturday.

Late on, Messi swooped on a heavy touch from Piero Hincapie to set up Lautaro Martinez ——- for his second goal in two games.

He then added one of his own with a superb free-kick.

Argentina have now extended their unbeaten run to 18 games under head coach Lionel Scaloni.

Ecuador, known as La Tri, exit without a win in spite of reaching the knockout stage.

Argentina started strong, with Martinez’s angled shot saved, while German Pezzella fired into the side-netting from a Messi corner-kick.

Ecuador had a major let-off in the 23rd minute following Carlos Gruezo’s error which allowed Messi in one-on-one, only to shoot into the upright.

Jhegson Mendez tested Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with a thunderous volley and Enner Valencia glanced a header off target as Ecuador offered some threat in an open game.

But Argentina took the lead in the 40th minute.

Messi calmly found De Paul who picked his spot after Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez raced off his line to clear a through-ball.

Valencia flicked a header wide on half-time, while the Fenerbahce forward also hit the post early in the second half from a tight angle.

Argentina sat back in the second half, with Gonzalo Plata testing Martinez in the 80th minute before Messi found Martinez for an easy finish after Hincapie’s error.

Hincapie was sent off in stoppage-time for a last-man foul following a video assistant referee check, with Messi stepping up to curl home the free-kick from the edge of the box brilliantly.

It was the Barcelona forward’s 73rd international goal.

Neymar leads Brazil squad into controversial Copa America

Brazil coach Tite confirmed his squad for the Copa America with Paris Saint-Germain star, Neymar, leading the group before the country’s highest court, on Thursday ruled over whether the controversial relocation of the tournament can take place.

Argentina and Colombia were meant to co-host the event but were removed for Coronavirus reasons and political instability with Brazil stepping in at short notice.

But Brazil had also an extremely difficult pandemic and its socialist party and a metal workers’ group was going to court to argue that it should not hold the Copa after all.

The players were also uncertain but eventually ruled out a boycott meaning Neymar and company could open the tournament in Brasilia on Sunday against Venezuela.

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva as recovered from injury to replace Rodrigo Caio of Flamengo in the squad.

The Copa was to take place without fans in stadium, just like the ongoing Copa Libertadores, the South American club championship.

Brazil named Copa America hosts after Argentina and Colombia dropped

The upcoming Copa America tournament will be played in Brazil, the South American football confederation CONMEBOL said on Monday after original hosts Argentina and Colombia were dropped.

CONMEBOL tweeted that the dates are confirmed and venues to be named later in the day.

“The oldest national team tournament in the world will thrill the entire continent!” the tweet said.

“CONMEBOL thanks the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro and his team, as well as the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) for opening the doors of that country to what is today the safest sports event in the world.”

Brazil also hosted the last edition of the oldest continental tournament in 2019.

The Copa was originally due to be played in Argentina and Colombia between June 13 and July 10.

But Colombia were stripped of the hosting rights earlier in May over political unrest and Argentina were suspended as hosts on Sunday over rising coronavirus infections.

“In view of the current circumstances, CONMEBOL informs that it has decided to suspend Argentina’s hosting of the Copa America.

“The CONMEBOL is analysing the offer of other countries which have shown interest in hosting the tournament,” the confederation had said on Sunday.

Just before the surprise announcement, Interior Minister Wado de Pedro had said that, due to the health situation in the country, it would be “very hard for the Copa America to be played.”

On Thursday, Argentina registered a record-high number of new coronavirus infections, 41,080, in spite of the country having lockdown measures in place.

The southern hemisphere’s autumn saw a second wave hit Argentina hard.

So far, some 3.7 million people have been infected and more than 77,000 people have died, according to official figures.

The Copa was initially scheduled for 2020, but like other continental tournaments pushed back owing to the pandemic.

The invited teams of Australia and Qatar withdrew earlier in the year due to the virus, with the Copa to consist of only the 10 South American teams.

Brazil have been one of the countries hit hardest by the pandemic and Bolsonaro has been criticised for his handling of the crisis.

Almost half a million people have died there of the coronavirus, with only the U.S. recording more deaths.
