Alaafin of Oyo postpones 50 years coronation indefinitely

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has postponed indefinitely his 50 years coronation anniversary in the aftermath of the ravaging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This is contained in a statement he personally signed and issued to newsmen on Saturday.

Oba Adeyemi ascended the throne on Jan. 14, 1971, aged 31.

The Oyo monarch, who had made adequate arrangement for an elaborate ceremony, said it was important to postpone the event.

He said that he had been able to convince his traditional cabinet on the need to postpone the event, as a sign of respect for the sanctity of human life.

“As usual, all those who know the importance of the Alaafin stool to the Yoruba nationhood, both at home and in the diaspora, had indicated their intention to be physically present on the occasion.

“Against the backdrop of the current global pandemic of COVID-19, I have got to make a rethink on the timing of the celebration.

“With very strong personal pain but with respect for the sanctity of human life, I have been able to convince my traditional cabinet (Oyomesi) of the need to postpone the event.

“The event is postponed till after the pandemic might have gone in no distant future,” he said.

The oba added that the logistics of effecting social distance rule and need of harbouring visitors from abroad for the mandatory two weeks isolation informed the decision.

“Consequently, between personal interest and national interest, especially when it comes to the sanctity of human live, the choice is clear for any patriot.

“While regretting any inconveniences the postponement might has caused, the sanctity of human life is more important to me than any social engagement,” he said.

COVID-19: Kwara Monarch postpones 10th year coronation celebrations

The Olomu of Omupo, Oba Yakubu Buari, in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara, has postponed all activities for his 10th year coronation anniversary celebrations until further notice.

Dr Monisoye Afolabi, the National President, Omupo Descendant Union (ODU), announced the postponement of all activities in a statement on Sunday in Ilorin.

According to him, on the 12th day of June 2010, Oba Yakubu Buari (Ilufemiloye II) was formally enthroned as the Olomu of Omupo Land in Ifelodun Local Government of Kwara.

“Consequently, June 2020 marks a full decade of that auspicious event in the life of the people of Omupo Land, which thus calls for a big celebration of thanksgiving for a peaceful and progressive reign.

“To all intents and purposes, plans for the celebrations had commenced.

“However, in view of the prevailing global health challenges, arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant advisories by the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and relevant international organisations, it has become expedient that the celebrations could not be held as planned,” he said.

Afolabi, however, stated that to mark the occasion, and to show his love for the wellbeing of his people, the Olomu of Omupo will carry out some of the following activities which include formal launch of the ‘Omupo People’s Empowerment Programme’.

According to the National President, the monarch will also distribute the second round of palliatives to his subjects living in Omupo.

Afolabi prayed the Almighty God to grant the traditional ruler long, peaceful and prosperous reign, and to all residents happy celebrations.

The monarch was also quoted to have wished all his subjects happy Eid-el-Fitr, saying they should imbibe the lessons of the Ramadan, which included love, sacrifice, perseverance, tolerance, among others.

  • Buhari congratulates Emir of Zazzau on 43rd coronation anniversary

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday congratulated the Emir of Zazzu, Dr Shehu Idris, for clocking 43 years on the throne.

The president’s congratulatory message was delivered by Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, who represented him at a prayer session organised by Zazzau Emirate Council in honour of the Emir at his palace in Zaria.

Buhari said the emir had 43 fruitful years not only to the people of Zazzau Emirate and Kaduna State, but the nation at large.

He thanked the emir “for the fatherly role he had been playing toward promoting tolerance, understanding, as well as commitment to prevailing peace across Nigeria.

“May Allah (SWT) give you long life to see another 43 years in good health and wisdom and may Jannatil Firdaus be your final abode in view of your endless efforts toward lasting peace across the country.”

On his part, Gov. El-Rufa’i said “I have delivered the message from Mr President and now it is time to give mine.

“Your Royal Highness, as you can see today, government activities had been halted in the state, I and Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff and all Commissioners are here to facilitate with you.

“We are here to celebrate with you and to thank God for the good 43 years you spent and may you double the years in good health.”

El-Rufa’i noted that the state government had been up and doing to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

He advised the people of Kaduna State, especially those without voter cards to go and register, saying the card was the only means to elect credible leaders.

He added that “people should go and register, it is your right, even if you are not going to vote for me, go and register.

“Without the voter card, there is no way you can elect leaders of your choice.”

The governor attributed lapses in security situation in Northern Nigeria to Local Government Reforms of 1973.

He said the reforms removed the security matters from ward heads, village heads, district heads and emirs and transferred it to local government councils.

“We are now in 42nd year of this transfer, what is the result?, there is nothing more than increased insecurity and that was not the case before.’’

He also commended the emir for leading the state to organise “the biggest and ever successful Durbar to mark 100 years of existence of Kaduna.”

Responding, the emir thanked the governor over what he described as “honour not only to me and my family but also to the entire emirate.”

He urged the people of Kaduna State to rally round the present administration to enable it to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

  • Oba’s coronation: Olubadan sues Ajimobi, Attorney General, 22 others

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has sued the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and 23 others, over their involvements in the crowning of 21 kings in Ibadan on August 27, 2017.

Joined in the suit are the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters in the state, the eight high chiefs that were elevated to kings, as well as the Baales that were conferred with kingship status.

Apart from the suit filed by Olubadan, there are others variously filed by Rashidi Ladoja, Abdul Jelil Karimu and others.

In the suit with file number I/1077/2017, which was filed at High Court of Justice, Oyo State on September 19, 2017, the Olubadan is claiming that the governor violated the Chiefs Laws CAP 28 of the state, saying that Ajimobi does not possess the power and authority to confer anybody the right to wear a beaded crown and coronet.

The Olubadan is also claiming that the crowing of the kings is illegal and void since the governor did not consult with the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The Olubadan is seeking an order setting aside the Gazette Numbers 14 and 15 of Volume 42 of August 23 and 24, 2017 made by the governor and which conferred the right to wear crown and coronet on the elevated high chiefs and Baales.

He said the governor’s action violated provisions of the CAP 28 of the Chiefs Laws of the state.

The monarch, therefore, prays the court to set aside the installation of the new kings.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Governor Ajimobi had some few weeks ago presented staff of office to 21 monarchs in Ibadan apparently against the wish of the Olubandan.

The governor further warned the Olubadan not to be involved or allowed himself to be used by politicians as the coronation of the 21 obas was in the interest of the people.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Olubadan who shunned the ceremony vowed to seek redress in court insisting the 21 monarchs were wearing cartons and not crowns.

  • Olubadan distances self from coronation of ‘new obas’, says ‘I did not endorse it’

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, says he has no hand whatsoever in the proposed coronation of High Chiefs slated for Sunday at Mapo Hall by Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Governor Ajimobi had on Friday presented letters of conferment of Obaship titles to 30 out of the 32 obas recommended by the Justice Akintunde Boade (rtd) led Judicial Panel of Enquiry on the review of 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

The Boade-led panel had on Aug. 18 submitted its report recommending 11 Olubadan High Chiefs and 21 Baales to wear beaded crown in Ibadan.
Olubadan had kicked against the review, saying he was not in support of it.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director, Media and Public Affairs to Olubadan, Mr Adeola Oloko, the monarch said his name being bandied around in some quarters as the father of the day at the occasion does not enjoy his blessing.

I have said it for the umpteenth time that I am opposed to the chieftaincy review and its recommendations as the process for such exercise has not been followed.

Therefore, as being advertised in some media houses, l cannot see how, I could possibly play a fatherly role in an exercise that I have not endorsed

Besides, as the father of Ibadan indigenes irrespective of political and ideological persuasion, I cannot attend an occasion where local government executives of one political party have been sending text messages to the party members in Ibadan land to mobilise for the event as if it is a political rally,” Adetunji said.

The monarch said he considered any conferment of crowns on anybody as an exercise in futility until otherwise reversed.

Adetunji said that it was going to be contemptuous for anybody to attend that programme as there are two suits that are yet to be determined before the court.

Where is the humanity of the organisers of the programme when Ibadan land is still mourning the passage of the Otun Balogun, High Chief Femi Olaifa, who was one of them until Aug.24,” he said.
