  • Buhari raises alarm over impacts of Covid-19

Buhari raises alarm over impacts of Covid-19

President Muhammadu Buhari has again raised alarm over the outbreak of coronavirus in Dec. 2019, across over 100 countries and has impacted negatively on global growth.

The President stated this at a dinner organised following the successful conclusion of the Going for Growth 2.0 roundtable session at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

He particularly observed that the virus had badly affected commodity prices such as crude oil, which has dropped by over 45 per cent since January.

According to him, these external challenges have only served to reinforce the importance of ensuring that Nigeria is self-sufficient in the production of strategic goods.

”They have also highlighted the fact that we need to continue to implement measures that would enable growth in other sectors of our economy and reduce our dependence on earnings from crude oil.

”For these objectives to be achieved, the vital role of the Nigerian private sector cannot be disputed or overemphasized.

”I am delighted to note that we have made some progress in our diversification plans and in creating an enabling environment for the Nigerian private sector to thrive,” he said.

On the agricultural and manufacturing sectors, the president noted that his administration had ensured substantial improvements in the cultivation and processing of key staple commodities such as rice, maize, cotton and tomatoes.

According to the president, a key focus of his administration has been diversification of the Nigerian economy and improving Nigeria’s level of self-sufficiency in food production.

He expressed optimism that these measures would help support faster economic growth, create employment opportunities for the teeming youths, and reduce the nation ‘s import bill.

He maintained that the task of enabling greater growth and development of the Nigerian economy required joint collaboration between the public and the private sectors.

The Nigerian leader lauded the participants of the roundtable for taking the time to discuss and provide recommendations on current economic issues, which could help support continued growth of the Nigerian economy.

”This government remains steadfast in seeking to promote growth of the Nigerian economy, and by extension the growth of the Nigerian private sector.

”I am glad to note that following recent recession and supported by growth enhancing fiscal and monetary policy measures, GDP growth has remained in positive territory for the past 11 quarters.

”The positive growth has been driven by growth in key sectors of our economy such as Agriculture, Industry, Oil and Gas, as well as ICT,” he said.

Buhari disclosed that his administration had also worked to improve access to finance for businesses in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

He said: ”Access to credit is often cited as a constraint to the growth of farmers and small and medium sized businesses. Over the past 10 months, we have seen significant improvements in credit to support continued growth of our economy.

”I am aware that lending rates by banks to farmers, small businesses and manufacturers have been lowered over the same period.

”These measures along with aggressive efforts at rebuilding our road, rail and power infrastructure, will help to reduce the cost of doing business in Nigeria and promote faster growth of our economy.

”Apart from the successes we have recorded, I admit that challenges do remain. Given our dependence on crude oil revenues for close to 60 per cent of government revenues, the recent decline in crude oil prices affects our ability to meet the infrastructure and human capital needs.”

The president, therefore, welcomed continued collaboration with the private sector.

He said the recommendations provided by the participants on ways in which the private sector could support growth in key sectors such as Agriculture, Manufacturing, ICT, and Finance are necessary if the nation must achieve double digit growth of the economy.

Buhari assured Nigerians that his administration would pay close attention to the recommendations offered by the participants, as part of the government efforts toward developing policies and programmes that would enable improved economic growth and creation of jobs

He said the first test had been conducted on them and that they tested negative, but added another test would be conducted within 48 hours for a final confirmation.

Abayomi also said a man from the United Kingdom who had been quarantined would have test conducted on him today to ascertain his status.

He said the state government was carrying out regular tests on people to ascertain their coronavirus status almost on daily basis.

The commissioner also disclosed that the government had established contact with the two people declared wanted, who were in the Turkish Airline with the index case, an Italian.

He said immediately the media announced the two people declared wanted, people gave out their contacts immediately and that they had been reached.

On the index case, Abayomi said the Italian was feeling very okay, but said he was still secreting the virus, adding that once he tested negative, another test would be conducted within two days for a second negative confirmation and that once that had been done, he would be released.

“The Index case is very well, no symptom, but test shows he is still secreting the virus, but going down, the virus has to go to zero point before he can be released,” he said.

Abayomi added that there was no specific treatment for coronavirus, saying that most of the drugs being used were HIV drugs to reduce the virus from growing fast.

“There are some drugs recommended for coronavirus. What we are waiting for is for the immune system of the Italian to clear the virus. He is actually better, he can’t leave until the virus is completely clear and zero. While he is better, he is not better for community yet; we cannot release him because he may affect others. The day he is negative, we will wait for two more days and if he gets a second negative, we will release him,” he said.

“We are satisfied with the second coronavirus patient, we will repeat his test tomorrow and based on the test, we will know the way forward,” he added.

On hand sanitisers, the commissioner frowned at those hoarding it, saying that the Ministry of Health would soon roll out its sanitisers into the market.

“We frown against those hoarding hand sanitisers, we are actually making it right now and we are going to push it into the market right now. We have started already and we are going to push it out,” he said.

Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, disclosed this yesterday at a media briefing, saying another man from the United Kingdom was also isolated.

He revealed that the four children and the teacher were quarantined because they had contact with a coronavirus patient, adding that they were isolated at the centre in Yaba two days ago to see if they would develop symptoms of the virus.

Disclosing that though the first test had been conducted on them and tested negative, he stated that another test would be conducted within 48 hours for final confirmation.

The commissioner also disclosed that the government had established contact with the two people declared wanted, who were in the Turkish Airline with the index case, an Italian.

He said shortly after the media announced that the two were people declared wanted, people gave out their contacts immediately and that they had been contacted.

On the index case, Abayomi said the Italian was feeling better, but that he was still secreting the virus, adding that once he tested negative, another test would be conducted within two days for a second negative confirmation and that once that had been done, he would be released.

Abayomi noted that there was no specific treatment for coronavirus, saying most of the drugs being used were HIV drugs to reduce the virus from growing faster.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the Lagos State Government yesterday held a sensitisation rally for stakeholders at the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Participants were charged to not just wish away the disease, but pray it away and take concrete actions aimed at checking its spread in the state.

Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who was represented by the Director, Human Resources, Mathew Oladunjoye, charged the different associations to replicate the exercise in their domains.

He also urged the Community Development Associations (CDAs) and market leaders to not only pray and reject coronavirus and its spread, but they should take hygienic steps that would halt the spread or ensure that they do not contact it.

He said it was the reason the state government asked LASEMA to take the sensitisation to the grassroots level in partnership with the council areas, as well as market and community leaders.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu wanted every resident to fully understand what needed to be done to check the spread and stop them from contacting the virus, saying that their understanding was critical to taming the scourge.
