Lagos speaks on alleged plans by coronavirus patient to escape

Lagos State Government has debunked news making the round that the index case of Corona Virus Disease isolated at the Lagos Mainland Hospital tried to escape.

State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi who debunked the news while giving an update on the index case at the Mainland Hospital on Saturday said the patient has never expressed any desire to leave the facility to the doctors and nurses who looks after him.

“I have spoken to him myself, he is doing very well, he is comfortable; he was comfortable yesterday and he is comfortable today”, Abayomi stated.

The Commissioner noted that the patient was initially kept in a single isolation room for his privacy when he was brought in because part of the facilities at the Mainland Hospital were being renovated. He added that the patient has subsequently been moved to one of the newly renovated wards.

“We were renovating part of the facility, so we kept him in a single isolation room for his privacy but we have subsequently moved him to one of our completed wards recently renovated with full complements of facilities, so he is right there now and he is comfortable.

“As of this morning, his condition has improved, he hasn’t developed new symptoms but he still got a mild fever and we will be running test to see what the situation is with the virus in his body and as soon as we get a negative screen, we will keep him for another two or three days and repeat the test to make sure that there are no more virus particles in his saliva and that means that he will not be contagious. Then, we give the OK for him to be released back into the community,” he said.

Responding to the news of an uber driver who had contact with the index case and reported to have gone at large, Abayomi described the news as fake and untrue, stressing that nothing of such happened.

Answering question on the vulnerability of health workers who works at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, he responded that the staff at the facility have been specially trained to deal with patients who have pathogens of high consequence.

“They are experts in infection prevention and control and they do not go into the isolation unit without full personal protective equipment. This is a specialist facility and there is no level of carelessness going on in this facility.

“The staff here including the staff in the bio-safety level laboratory are well trained and certified biosecurity specialist, so there is no unprofessionalism in this environment”, Abayomi said.

On the issue of availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the Commissioner assured that a stock of several hundred kits are available at the mainland hospital, adding that PPEs have also been distributed to all the general hospitals and major primary health care facilities.

“So we are stocked up for now, if we need to buy more, we know exactly where to get it, so we are not worried about PPE supply.

While restating that the State government is prepared to contain and break the circle of transmission of the virus, he explained that the Lagos State Government have been building capacity for any biosecurity threats to Lagos since the Ebola virus incident of 2014.

“We have been preparing since Ebola incident of 2014 and as soon as Lagos was certified Ebola, we have been building capacity. This is evident in the level of sophistication in some of the facilities here at Mainland hospital. We have not been sitting down or relaxing, we don’t want to experience what happened in 2014 again, so we are ready and we will continue to build that capacity year by year”, Abayomi stated.

The Commissioner disclosed that the reformation plan for the Mainland hospital is a step by step process but very advanced, adding that new facilities are being designed for the hospital with the ultimate goal of making it a centre of excellence for infectious diseases with a large capacity for isolating patients if there is any major outbreak.

Four Chinese quarantined in Plateau over Coronavirus

The Plateau State Government has quarantined four Chinese nationals in the state in line with measures to forestall the spread of Coronavirus (COVID -19).

State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nimkong Ndam, said the nationals were miners working in Wase Local Government Area of the state.

“They are four nationals, one arrived on Feb. 25, while the three others arrived on Feb. 26. On questioning them, they said they came from China, enroute Addis Ababa Airport to Abuja airport, where they were screened by health officials,” Ndam said.

He said the uproar that their arrival had caused was just speculations which would be confirmed after their isolation for 14 days, as they had not shown any symptoms of the virus.

He assured the public that health officials were on ground to ensure all measures were taken to curtail the spread of the virus which had killed more than 2000 lives in China, since it was first reported in December 2019.

Similarly, Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Plateau chapter, Dr Titus Dajel, called for more stringent measures at entry points of the state, to control the spread of the virus in the state and the nation.

Dajel, while reacting to news about the suspected Coronavirus patients in Wase Local Government Area described the incident as unfortunate.

He said thorough checks by relevant authorities should be conducted on foreigners entering the country, especially from countries with the Coronavirus.

“We urge the public to exercise caution and high level of hygiene and avoid crowdy areas and environment.

Nigeria’s confirmed coronavirus case was first reported on Friday of an Italian working in a cement factory in Ogun State.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said there are four laboratories in the country where suspected cases could be tested.

JUST IN: Another country confirms first case of Coronavirus

Ecuador has confirmed the first case of a fast-spreading new coronavirus in the Andean country, its health minister said on Saturday.

The patient is an elderly female Ecuadorean residing in Spain, Catalina Andramuño, the health minister, told reporters.

The patient arrived in Ecuador on Feb. 14 on a direct flight from Madrid without showing any symptoms, but soon fell ill and went to a hospital where she was diagnosed with the coronavirus.

“The patient is currently in intensive care at one of the hospitals we had designated to attend to coronavirus,” Andramuño said.

He said that the government was monitoring people who may have come into contact with the patient.

Brazil earlier this week confirmed the first case of the new coronavirus in Latin America.

The virus has infected more than 82,000 people and killed about 2,800, mostly in China, according to the World Health Organisation.

  • Delta sets up response team against coronavirus

The Delta State Government has set up a response team in the wake of the reported case of Coronavirus in the country.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye, made the disclosure at a media briefing on Friday in Asaba.

According to him, the team is headed by Dr Belu Abaye, the Head of the Rapid Response Team of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

He said that following the reported case of the virus in Lagos, Delta has been put on red alert to forestall the virus from spreading to the state.

Ononye said a response team has been constituted “to handle any case of the virus in the event of any eventuality.

“I receive calls about the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria. Over the past weeks, there has been tension in the state over Lassa fever, which about 62 cases have been reported.

“Today again, we are here for another briefing to sensitise residents of Delta not to panic over this Coronavirus.

“The state has already taken proactive measures to curtail the possible spread of the virus. All entry points to the state, the Asaba Airport, the Warri Port, Koko Port, Sapele Port and other boundaries across the state are on red alert.

“Also, there will be holding centres across the state to monitor if any case of the virus arises,” Ononye said.

The commissione further stated that the response team would quarantine any suspected case of the virus at the centre, before moving the patient to a health institution.

In a remark, the Head of the Emergency Operation Centre of the Rapid Response Team, Dr Ann Ojimba, noted that Delta was among the six states of the federation with the high risk of spreading the virus.

She said this was so because of the demographic nature of the state’s borders with its neigbours.

She urged residents of the state to imbibe the culture of hand washing and maintain five feet distance away from someone while coughing, due to the airborne nature of the virus.

  • Coronavirus: Oyo releases laboratory results of two suspected cases

Coronavirus: Oyo releases laboratory results of two suspected cases

The Oyo State Government on Friday said two suspected cases of corona virus in the state as speculated in some media reports have tested negative.

The two cases according to the government did not even test positive to any of either corona virus or Lassa fever but that the suspects who were earlier quarantined are improving heathwise.

This is as the government disclosed that the state is on high alert following the confirmed case in neighbouring Lagos state.

The government spoke through the state commissioner of health, Dr Bashir Bello while responding to questions from journalist during a press conference to update the media on the efforts of the government at ensuring that the virus did not enter into the state.

Saying the press conference became imperative in view of the proximity of Lagos to Ibadan, Bello said the state had deployed adequate resources to its facilities in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Stressing that no case of the corona or Lassa fever virus had been reported in the state, the commissioner said the state has enlisted the support and collaboration of the Nigerian Army through the 2 Division, Ojoo where a quarantine facility had been set up in the case of any reported case or outbreak.

Noting that all state health facilities had been put on high alert, he enjoined private based health facilities to also have a high index of suspicion for all cases of unexplainable fever and upper respiratory infections.

Speaking further, Bello implored residents of the state to prioritise hygienic practices of regular hand washing with soap and water and ensuring that anyone with fever is promptly taken for medical attention.

He also urged residents to reduce frequency of face touching, regularly disinfect surfaces and keep social distance with anyone sneezing or coughing.

“As for the suspected case, the person is now improving. We know that a case will have to be taken into study and it was discovered that it is nothing related to either Coronavirus or Lassa virus.

“What we saw at Oyo was nothing near Lassa or Coronavirus. We are ready as we don’t know who would have travelled in and out of Ibadan.

“For the least symptoms of respiratory distress, we give them that maximum attention and we treat it like a case. A single case is considered an epidemic. That is why with the single case in Lagos, all other neighbouring states are on high alert.

“What we are trying to do is that going by our proximity to Lagos and the high level of transaction between these two urban centres, we are being very prepared because no one can tell.

“There is freedom of movement enshrined in the constitution and we cannot, for this reason, restrict movement of individuals. I wish to reassure the people of the state that there is currently no outbreak of Coronavirus in the state,” Bello said.

In his own remarks, the Chairman, UCH Committee on Response to Emergency and Outbreak of Disease, Professor Kayode Osungbade noted that from the caliber of people at the press conference, the state is prepared to tackle the virus as all stakeholders have continued to come together and especially because a case has been confirmed in Nigeria which necessitated the press conference.

He added that with the presence of all the stakeholders at the conference, including the military, the state government, the UCH, private facilities, Officials of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) among other is indicative of the readiness and commitment of the relevant stakeholders to tackle the challenge any outbreak.

@followlasg resolve to ensure he gets adequate care #ForAGreaterLagos

“While at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, I took time to inspect the ongoing renovation of the isolation wards. The renovation should be completed in a couple of days. I am satisfied with the renovation and preparedness work in the hospital,” he said.

The first case of the deadly Coronavirus was confirmed in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Thursday.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Abayomi, in a statement said Lagos State has confirmed its first case of COVID-19 and reported it to the Federal Ministry of Health.

The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the outbreak in China in January 2020.

According to Abayomi, the patient is an Italian citizen who entered Nigeria on the 25th of February from Milan, Italy for a brief business visit.

“He fell ill on the 26th February and was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing. COVID-19 infection was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos,” he said.

He said the government of Lagos State under the Governor as the COVID-19 Incident Commander, through the Lagos State Ministry of Health, has been strengthening measures to ensure that any outbreak in Lagos was controlled and contained quickly in collaboration with the multi-sectoral Coronavirus Preparedness Group, led by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). We have immediately activated the State Emergency Operations Centre to respond to this case and implement firm control measures.

“I wish to assure all Lagosians and Nigerians that we have been strengthening our preparedness since the first confirmation of cases in China. We will use all the resources made available by the State and the Federal Government to respond to this case,” he said.

  • The Nigerian Thing: How Are We Prepared For Covid-19 (Coronavirus)?, By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

The Nigerian Thing: How Are We Prepared For Covid-19 (Coronavirus)?, By Anthony Eferhirhie Abugu

Its no longer news or new to the Nigerian public of the newest virus in town ‘Coronavirus’ also known as Covid-19. This virus has its origin from the Wuhan province of China. When it started from Wuhan, China police and government officials thought it was a joke and like every other virus such as SARS, and thus they downplayed the warning by the first Doctor – Doctor Lin Wenliang who discovered the power of this virus and its spreading capability – about a strange deadly new virus that infects fast and that can spread so fast if not contain immediately.

The Chinese authorities summoned him for questioning and silenced him. He is now dead of the same virus but till today we have seen how this virus has spread like a harmattan wind causing a total lockdown of the city of Wuhan and down to other Chinese provinces. The virus continues to develop other tentacles that has spread to other Asian countries. In China alone there is currently 78,000 plus infected with 2,700 plus deaths.

According to some confirmed sources, the reality on the ground in China is more than the data being presented to the world in terms of
those infected and the numbers of death. Currently, it has hit 11 European countries with Italy as most of its origin. These 11 European countries are part of the 26 countries with infected cases of the covid-19 which is rated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as globally high. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ‘For the first time, the number of new cases reported outside of China in one day was larger than those reported outside China’.

Also, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that ‘this virus is inevitable but it can be delay by serious and strategic preparatory measures.’ This now leads us to the question that has continued to give me sleepless nights ‘How prepare is Nigeria for Coronaviru – Covid-19?. Nigeria is a very dynamic country when issues of life and death such as a deadly virus as coronavirus is at play. When this virus finally hit home, will it be downplay by regional politics or religion or political interest of maneuver here and there leaving the Nigerian populace to waste away in deaths and anarchy?.

What is our Federal government doing right now to curtail this virus? Or is Nigeria immune to this virus? These and many more mind
pruning questions any reasonable Nigerian should start asking before its too late for us to even scream from our Eldorado of I don’t care attitude which is a Nigerian thing.

Other countries who are still observing the spread of this virus are already setting contingency modalities in place to check against this virus, its spread and quarantine facilities. Nigeria must be prepare if not; apart from the deaths and chaos, it’s going to cause it will crash the Nigeria ailing economy. The federal government must put serious measures in place such as establishing Medical Quarantine Facilities (MQF) at least 3 to 5 in each states of the country, banned all flights from the already infected countries (high-risk countries) from coming to Nigeria, subjecting all Asian nationals that came into the country since January this year to test the coronavirus test.

Most importantly, as a national responsibility, our health officials starting from the Minister of Health to all the states commissioners of Health need to have a daily brief of the spread of the virus and most importantly the Federal Government has to constitute a Federal government response team or committee now and immediately. We must be ready for this virus as a nation and individually and our best attack is not defense but strategic preparation which must happen now.

Till now, most Nigerians don’t know what this virus is, its causes and early symptoms. Our health officials must come out to sensitize the general public of the details of this virus, possible and early symptoms and closest testing and quarantine facilities. If we play the Nigerian thing of I don’t care now we will too care in the nearest future when the die has already been cast against our survival. If we play regional or religious politics with it then we are finished. This is not one of those situations where the World Health Organization or the European Union will send help. They have the same challenge and until there is a viable vaccine to limit the spread and enforce a cure then our greatest weapon is our preparation individually and as a nation.

Lastly, here is a global report of infected countries as of February 26, 2020: Afghanistan with 1 confirmed case, Algeria 1, Australia with 23, Austral 2, Bahrain 33, Belgium 1, Brazil 1, Cambodia 1, Canada 12, China 78,497, Croatia 3, Denmark 1, Egypt 1, Estonia 1, Finland 2, France 18. Georgia 1, Germany 21, Greece 3, India 3, Iran 245, Iraq 6, Israel 3, Italy 528, Japan 189, Kuwait 43, Lebanon 2, Malaysia 22, Nepal 1, North Macedonian 1, Norway 1, Omar 4, Pakistan 2, The Philippines 3, Romania 1, Russia 5, Singapore 93, South Korea 1,766, Spain 12, Sri Lanka 1, Sweden 2, Switzerland 4, Taiwan 32, Thailand 40, United Arab Emirates 13, United Kingdom 15, United States 60 and Vietnam 16. African countries are left out for now except Egypt. The puzzling question is the coronavirus – covid-19 already in Nigeria or West Africa and we don’t know or our testing facilities are not adequate or the fear of discrimination or being branded and secluded is hindering victims from coming out for testing? God help us and help the Federal Republic of Nigeria in these turbulent times

BREAKING: Ogun State identifies 28 Coronavirus suspects

The Government of Ogun State said it has identified and quarantined 28 Coronavirus (Covid-19) suspects, potentially those who came in contact with the first Nigerian case of the deadly virus.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun confirmed the development at a press briefing, where he said the company in Ewekoro, where the Italian citizen, who tested positive of Covid-19 on Friday, visited has been shut down.

“The information we have is that the particular company in question has practically shut down and they have set up two isolation centres within the company. They have identified all those that have been in contact with this index, totalling about 28 so far and they have been quarantined.

“They are looking at interviewing these 28 people to know who they have been in contact with so that they can ensure these other people are quarantined.

Coronavirus: Panic mood on NSE as market capitalisation loses N308bn

Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday ended on panic mood, as the country recorded the first Coronavirus case after Egypt and Algeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the panic mood affected trading on the exchange with the market recording only two gainers against 41 losers.

Omordion stated that the news further affected the performances of the domestic equities which had been battling with liquidity issue.

“The news of coronavirus entering the country has further dampened investors confidence in the stock market as reflected in the global markets that are bleeding badly as a result of selloffs.

“There is already fear of global recession due to the virus,” he said.

He noted that market players expected government at all levels to be proactive in tackling the virus to avoid further spread to other parts of the country.

Omordion said the issue should be contained the way the previous administration fought Ebola, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and others continued to look for solutions to put an end to the virus.

But, we at InvestData anticipated that recovering was underway because it is a global problem.

“The market and economy of China where it started is already recovering as over 35,000 people have been discharged from the hospital.

“And Chinese government has intensified efforts to check the virus and they have injected funds to the economy to stimulate economic productivity,” Omordion said.

Presco recorded the highest loss to lead the losers’ table, dropping by N4.95 to close at N44.90 per share.
