  • WHO develops COVID-19 treatment master plan

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is developing a master plan for coordinating clinical trials that could lead to potential therapies for patients infected with Coronavirus (COVID-19).

“The WHO is extending investigations into the source of the virus (which is still undetermined),

“The agency will continue to support countries with the tools to diagnose cases and protect health workers, including personal protective equipment,’’ he said.

Ganduje is the second person receiving award of such nomanclature 27 years after.

Dr. Enahire said the award was bestowed on Ganduje for his continued effort in the development of primary healthcare system in the state, in line with global best practice.

He expressed delight over Ganduje’s sterling performance in the health sector, pointing out that the rate at which Kano is moving in the development of the primary health care system is encouraging and superb.

Dr. Enahire revealed that, “we at the Ministry, we are united in arriving at the decision that led to the Award of this merit to His Excellency Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

“All the indices used before they arrived at this level, were scientifically proven, that they all appreciated the immense contributions of the Governor in the area mentioned, primary health care delivery system.

He further stated that because of his unassuming belief and acceptance of the efforts being put by the Governor in the health sector generally, “this is my third time of coming to Kano in less than a Month.

This signifies that, Kano is doing well in the sector because I cannot just be coming without being satisfied that the Governor is doing very well.”

Dr. Enahire noted that, Kano state under Ganduje, “understands the importance of the health sector and not at the detriment of other sectors of the state, because we have been following trends and see for ourselves. Dr Ganduje is that Governor who believes in healthy society. And who works towards improving same.”

It is known to all that, the Governor is doing extremely amazing things in this sector.”

According to him, the women participation as Influencers is another way of helping the primary health care sector become more entrenched and with more grassroot support, where sense of ownership would be achieved.

Chinese state media pegged the death toll at 1,011 as at time this report was filed by TheNewsGuru (TNG).

One death each has been reported in Hong Kong and the Philippines while the number of infections in mainland China reached almost 42,300, bringing the total number of cases across the world to more than 42,700.

Recall that China reported a record-breaking 97 deaths on Sunday. The current death toll topples the 774 deaths recorded in early 2000 during the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Coronavirus has been confirmed in Singapore, UK, Malaysia, Taiwan, Spain, Vietnam, Germany, UAE, France, Japan, with the World Health Organisation declaring a global emergency.

Earlier, Li Wenliang, a Chinese ophthalmologist who raised the alarm on the disease, was confirmed dead after contracting the virus while treating an infected patient.

China also recorded the youngest coronavirus patient when a 30-hour-old baby tested positive just a day after its infected mother was delivered of the child.

60 more people confirmed with coronavirus on cruise ship in Japan

Testing aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan has revealed 60 more confirmed cases of coronavirus, media said on Monday.

The media also added that quarantined passengers took to social media to warn of depression setting in over their confinement.

“Monday’s figure takes to 130 the number of infections on the ship docked in Yokohama,’’ domestic broadcasters TBS and NHK said, citing Japanese health ministry sources.

The health ministry’s communication office had no information on the report when contacted by Reuters.

The Diamond Princess was placed in quarantine for two weeks upon arriving in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, on Feb. 3, after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was diagnosed with the virus.

About 3,700 people are aboard the ship, which usually has a crew of 1,100 and a passenger capacity of 2,670.

Passengers have been allowed on decks in shifts to get fresh air and encouraged to regularly take their temperature.

“Lots of the passengers now are getting a bit of cabin fever, depression is starting to set in,’’ British passenger David Able said in a video posted on Facebook.

Another said he hoped assurances about the effectiveness of quarantine and ventilation on board would prove true.

“I will get nervous if we pass 200,” said the 43-year-old Hong Kong resident quarantined on the boat with his wife, child and several others of his family.

“Hoping best for those taken to hospital. No fewer than two reports back to us on Facebook that they are symptom free,” said the man, who declined to be identified.

A passenger with the Twitter handle daxa_tw posted an audio clip of the captain announcing the discovery of 66 new cases.

Japan’s health ministry is separating infection counts on the ship and evacuee flights from China from Japan’s official tally.

    Domestic cases stand at 21.

The disease has killed 908 people, chiefly in mainland China, and infected over 40,000.
