The NYSC expressed regret over the deaths and condoled the families of three corps members who died during the on-gong 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) Orientation Course in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara States respectively.

Recall that Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died at National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, orientation camp in Kano State on Tuesday was laid to rest on Thursday.

The Bayelsa State Orientation Camp in Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the state witnessed the death of another female member, Miss Elechi Chinyerem, aged 27. while Udeme Monday, died in Zamfara State.

The NYSC has however set up “a high-powered committee” to investigate the causes of the death of the trio.

The NYSC Director-General, Brig. General, Suleiman Kazaure, in a statement issued in Abuja, said, “The death of the trio followed brief illnesses and after medical teams in the camps battled to save them in line with established procedures.

However, in view of these unfortunate incidents in Bayelsa, Kano, and Zamfara states, management has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the loss the Corps members.

The NYSC management appreciates the concern of stakeholders, and wishes to assure the general public, especially serving and prospective corps members as well as parents and guardians that the scheme will continue to take measures aimed at ensuring the security and general well-being of youths enlisted to serve the nation on its platform.

Their demise, coming in their prime time when they were bracing up for further roles towards advancing their respective families, the nation and the rest of humanity, came as a rude shock to us in the NYSC family.

On behalf of the management, staff and corps members nationwide, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased corps members. May the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and give their families and the rest of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.

While we mourn the demise of these corps members, who, out of patriotic zeal, answered the clarion call to serve their fatherland, we are constrained to correct the impression of negligence being created in some quarters.

The management wishes to state that the welfare of corps members has always remained topmost in the priorities of the Scheme, and we have continued to strive to give our best in that regard.

The policy of the scheme regarding healthcare during Orientation course provides for the setting up of camp clinic manned by qualified Doctors and other Corps Health Personnel.

The clinics, which are also provided with drugs and other basic equipment, are detailed to render round-the-clock medical services on camp with standing arrangement to refer and ensure immediate movement of patients to more sophisticated health facilities when necessary.

We want to inform the public that medical teams in our camps have always been guided by the procedures of practice and in the most professional ways possible,” the statement added.

NYSC abandoned my sister-Sister of deceased corp member laments

A female corp member died after being required to participate in military drills on Tuesday at Kano camp. It was discovered that she didn’t partake in the drill because she woke up feeling extremely ill and was taken to a clinic where she was supposedly neglected and not given proper medical care.

The female corp member identified as Oladepo Ifedolapo was a first class graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. She died same day she fell ill and was buried yesterday in Osogbo at her family’s residence amidst tears.

The elder sister of the deceased narrated the late call member’s final moments. According to Oyeyode Abimbola,

“You (Ifedolapo) called me five-hour to your death and you told me to start coming as the NYSC doctors are not doing anything for you, they thought you were pretending you did not want to go for parade so they did not attend to you. When you started calling people from home, they eventually gave u an injection. Immediately after, you called me again, saying that you noticed a lot of rashes on your body that I should speak with the doctor who however refused to talk to me.

I called five minutes later and you told me your tongue is twisting. They sent all your friends out after seeing all the reaction on your body due to the unknown injection, you said we should ask for flight and i called immediately. They told me Abuja flight is Mon, Wed &Fri. I told you to tell anybody in the clinic that I’m a nurse, that they should allow me to speak to them. A male nurse took your phone and told me you are having anaphylactic reaction and they will watch you for just one hour before transferring you to Aminu Kano teaching hospital. But alas, they did not, until 5 hours later when they noticed you were restless and calling people at home.

I boarded a bus going to kano with your sister Kemisola Oladepo, to come pick you from there. I begged them to take you to a teaching hospital around but they took you to General hospital gwazo where they have nothing or little care to render. They took your phone from you claiming you are not resting. From that 5 pm I could not talk to you. I took a 16 hours journey to make sure I get to you, but I was called around 3 am that you gave up, without any doctor in the hospital to assist you. The only nurse on duty told me she tried her best, her best of staying beside you when death was taking you away because there was nothing to use.

From that time till I got to Kano, I was hoping it will only be a mix up somewhere that it can’t be you. I got to Kano and met you at Aminu Kano mortuary. Alas, it was you being put in that cold place. Amokkkkkeeeeeeeeee Mi, you couldn’t withstand the agony. NYSC successfully cut your destiny due to negligence. REST ON OUR QUEEN. If you are opportuned to come back to the world pls come as my daughter. ADIEU Oladepo Ifedolapo AMOkE MI
