The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, gave this assurance during the Batch A 2025 pre-mobilization workshop for heads of Corps-producing institutions and other stakeholders in Abuja yesterday.

The government began disbursing the N77,000 allowance to Corps members last month, following President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the minimum wage bill into law, eight months ago.

Speaking with reporters at the event, the DG emphasized that the government is committed to fulfilling its promise and that the payment of arrears would be made as soon as funds are released. He further assured that even Corps members who have already passed out would receive their arrears. “Once we receive the funds, we will credit them. We have their bank details, and Nigerians need not worry because the government is responsive to their needs,” Nafiu said.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, also spoke on the need for reforms within the NYSC to align with the current administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted that the NYSC scheme, created in 1973, must evolve to meet the demands of modern Nigeria. “We must reform the scheme to address how it prepares graduates for the job market,” he said, calling for a collaborative effort to create an adaptive and inclusive NYSC that serves future generations.

The Director General of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed has affirmed that the scheme will prioritise rural communities in posting corps members.

He said that more corps members, especially medical personnel, would be posted to rural areas.

He said this is for the purpose of improving the wellbeing of indigent Nigerians.

Ahmed stated this while playing host to the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Dr Muyi Aina, at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja.

According to him, “Nigeria’s rural areas need corps services more than the urban centres.”

He further expressed satisfaction over how Nigerian graduates, including corps medical personnel, apply to serve their fatherland.

He directed the Corps Welfare and Health Services Department to work with officials from NPHCDA to review and revive the now dormant partnership between the two agencies.

The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Muyi Aina, commended NYSC for staffing the health centres in rural areas with corps medical personnel, whose contributions have made great impact in the nation’s health sector.

Pointing out that there is a shortage of medical personnel to meet the nation’s need, Aina cited his service year experience when he had to work in three different primary health care centres in Apapa, Lagos, owing to the deficit of medical personnel.

He said part of the reason for his visit was to explore the possibility of reviving the partnership between the two agencies, which had become moribund.

He then promised that his agency would support NYSC camp clinics with essential medical supplies and consumables.

Corps members will not receive N70,000 minimum wage – NYSC clarifies

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has not directed corps members to upgrade their accounts for payment of N70,000 minimum wage.

The  NYSC said this in a statement issued by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Mr Eddy Megwa, on Sunday in Abuja.

According to Megwa, the misleading information making the rounds on social media  is absolute falsehood.

“Corps members, parents and members of the public should note that no directive has been received from any relevant sector of government responsible for wage matters.

“It is therefore impossible for the NYSC to issue any directive on such.

“Corps members already know the approved channel and mode of communication in the scheme and should therefore ignore the directive accordingly.

“The NYSC by this release,  therefore, urges corps members to desist from allowing mischief makers to play on their intelligence,” he said.

Megwa also warned bloggers and social media influencers to stop issuing statements that concern the management of NYSC without authorisation.
