  • Hoodlums strip corps members in Ebonyi, collect pants, sanitary pads

    Two female members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC serving in Ebonyi state have become the latest victims of the pants for rituals practice presently ravaging the country.

    The two corps member, it was gathered, were reportedly forced by unidentified hoodlums to remove their clothes including their pants and hand them over to the hoodlums.

    One of the corps members, who was on her period also had her blood socked pants and sanitary pads taken away by the hoodlums.

    The incident, it was learnt, happened at Oshiegbe community, near the boundary between Ohaukwu and Ezza North local government area of Ebonyi State.

    Police spokesman in the State, Loveth Odah confirmed the incident.

    She said: “On 5th of February, 2019, Female corps members reported to Divisional Headquarters in Ohaukwu Local Government Area to report that on their way coming from Ezillo in Ishielu Local Government Area to Abakaliki, a Jeep stopped in front of them and asked them to pay N200 each to be conveyed to Abakaliki. They entered”.

    According to the spokesman, on reaching 135 Junction, at Ezzamgbo, the men diverted to another direction and told them that they wanted to pick something from a teacher at St. Michael Secondary School, Ezzamgbo.

    When they got to Oshiegbe community, at the boundary area between Ohaukwu and Ezza North Local Government Areas, the driver stopped and came down”.

    He told them that he wanted to ease himself. He immediately went to the back door, opened the door and pointed a gun at them; ordering them to come down and give them all their cloths including their pants.

    The spokesman said that one of the corps members shed tears when she remembered that she was in her period.

    They collected their pants and her sanitary pad and drove off. Before driving off, they collected their phones and smashed them on the spot”.

    We also learnt that when they meet women who are not wearing pants, they give them pants and force them to wear them for about five minutes before taking them away from their victims”, Odah said.

    She urged travelers to always go to designated motor parks to board vehicles to avoid such attack.

  • JUST IN: Police arrest alleged kidnappers of corps members in Imo

    The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command has arrested the alleged kidnappers of five corpers.

    The victims were kidnapped on the Umuapu axis of the Owerri/Port Harcourt expressway on October 23 on their way to the NYSC orientation camps in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

    Their kidnappers had accosted the vehicles they were travelling in.

    The policemen who were on duty around the area of the incident intervened and rescued the victims same day.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, told our correspondent on Wednesday that the suspects were arrested following investigation which was launched on the abduction.

    The CP, who described the abduction of the corps members who were traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State, said that the Tactical Unit of the command was activated to achieve the feat.

    The CP alleged that the suspects had been involved in other kidnap incidents, armed robbery and murder cases.

    He gave the names of the suspects as Wisdom Nwobodo, 22, from Ikwerre in Rivers State; Okoro Emenike, 20, from Apani, also in Ikwerre: Chukwu Wisdom, 19, from Umuapu in Imo State; and two others

    He said that the suspects were arrested on October 28 at Nkaraha junction on the Owerri-Port Harcourt expressway by his gallant officers.

    Galadanchi said, “We intercepted the suspects with 16 different types of handsets, three different ATM cards, some charms, one television set, compact disc with two speakers, one red mask, one Access Bank cheque book, and a small quantity of Indian hemp.

    During interrogations, suspects confessed to cultism, kidnapping around Ohaji axis of Imo State and killing of one Augustine Ejimebu, 69, from Apani in Ikwerre, Rivers State.

    They also confessed to being responsible for the kidnap of the five corps members who were traveling from Ibadan, the Oyo state capital to Rivers and Akwa Ibom states for the NYSC orientation programme.”

    The CP, who ascribed the breakthrough to the community policing strategies of the Inspector General of Police, which his command was implementing, said that the suspects would be arraigned in court.

     

  • Boko Haram: Shettima begs corps members not to redeploy

    Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State on Thursday pleaded with corps members deployed in the state not to seek redeployment, assuring them of his government’s commitment to their welfare and security.
    He also told them that they are major stakeholders in the task of the development of the state.
     
    Shettima made the appeal in Katsina during the commencement of a three-week orientation for the 2018 Batch ‘C’ corps members deployed in the state.
     
    The orientation is taking place at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps training camp, Babaruga in the outskirts of Katsina State.
     
    The Governor who was represented at the occasion by the Chairman of the Borno NYSC Governing council, Alhaji Mahdi Gazali, maintained that the state government still paid extra allowances to corps members deployed in the state, aside from monthly stipends being paid them by the NYSC.
     
    According to him, the state still pays monthly allowances of N10,000 to all categories of corps members; N50,000 to paramedics graduates and N100,000 to corps members who are medical doctors.
     
    The Governor said, “The orientation programme has been strategically and tactically designed to acquaint and indeed instill in you the requisite leadership qualities of discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, and tolerance to co-exist peacefully with others from different socio-cultural, religious and political backgrounds.
     
    “Therefore, I charge you all to avail yourselves with this great opportunity to imbibe and internalise these noble values and apply same in your daily contributions towards our nation-building.”
     
    The Borno State Coordinator of the NYSC, Alhaji Rabiu Aminu, disclosed that as of Wednesday night, 1,354 corps members made up of 750 males and 604 females had reported at the orientation camp.
     
    The orientation programme is expected to end on November 12, 2018.

    NYSC DG speaks on possibility of increased allowance for corps members

    The Federal Government has begun an upward review of the N19, 800 monthly allowance paid to members of the National Youth Service Corps, according to the Director-General of the scheme, Brig Gen Suleiman Kazaure.

    The DG stated this on Thursday, noting that the NYSC, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, received a letter from the Presidency, which confirmed that the process to review the allowance of corps members had started.

    Kazaure, who disclosed this while inspecting the NYSC Orientation Camp in Abuja, said the Presidency had also sent a copy of the letter to the Ministry of Finance for further consideration.

    The DG said, “The Federal Government is working to increase your monthly allowance. Therefore, wherever you find yourselves, conduct yourself well and be good ambassadors for the country. We received a letter from the Presidency through the Ministry of Youth and Sports and copied to the Ministry of Finance, which shows that the corps members’ allowance will be reviewed upward. This is in the pipeline.”

    The DG, earlier in Edo State, warned corps members participating in the 2019 general elections as ad hoc workers to shun electoral malpractices.

    He stated this while addressing the 1,989 corps members deployed to the state for the 2018 Batch “B” service year, warning that any corps member who violated the electoral laws would be dealt with accordingly.

    The NYSC’s Spokesperson, Adenike Adeyemi, in a statement, quoted the DG as saying, “We warn corps members to avoid electoral malpractices as they will be participating in the forthcoming general elections as ad hoc workers. The NYSC management has put the necessary machinery in place to ensure the safety of all corps members throughout the service year.

    Any corps member that violates the electoral laws will be dealt with accordingly, as the scheme is committed to ensuring free, fair and credible elections.”

    New minimum wage will determine Corps members’ allowance – DG

    The Director General, of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure, says the increase in corps members monthly allowance would be determined by the new national minimum wage ”when it takes effect.”

    The official said this on Monday while fielding questions from journalists newsmen shortly after the swearing-in ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘A’ corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Kusalla, Karaye Local Government Area of Kano state.

    According to him, “our efforts to ensure that the monthly allowance of the corps members is increased have yielded a very good result following series of discussion with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige.”

    Mr Kazaure added that the N18,800 paid to them is grossly inadequate to cater for their needs during the mandatory one year service to the nation.

    The federal government had set-up a committee to look into the upward review of the minimum wage which he said will also determine the increase of the corps members’ allowance.

    We have been assured that when the new minimum wage takes effect, also the corps members allowance will be reviewed upward,” Mr Kazaure assured.

    The NYSC DG also disclosed that 82,000 corps members were deployed nationwide for the 2018 Batch ‘A’ orientation course across various states except those with security challenges.

    In his remarks, the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, urged the corps members to shun all acts capable of denting the image of the scheme or which would sour their relationship with the camp officials.

    You are to be guided by the sense of duty and discipline at all times, that would undoubtedly lead you to succeed in your entire life,” Mr Ganduje said.

    Earlier in his welcome address, the NYSC Coordinator in Kano, Ladan Baba said no fewer than 2,487 corps members were registered in the camp, comprising 1,289 males and 1,198 females.

    Mr Baba added that the corps members since the beginning of the three-week orientation had been adapting to the various activities in the camp and have behaved well.

    The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Thursday presented State Honours’ Award and cash prizes to 14 outstanding corps members in Lagos State.

    Mr Momammed Momoh, the Lagos State Coordinator of NYSC, also announced the death of three members during the passing-out parade of the corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

    Momoh said that the awardees received cash prizes ranging from N150,000 to N200,000.

    The awardees include 11 corps members of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ and ‘B ‘ and three corps members in the 2017 Batch ‘A’, Stream I.

    “On a sad note, we lost three corps members of this batch to the cold hands of death. May their souls rest in peace and may God give their families the fortitude to bear the losses,’’ he said.

    Momoh revealed that 4,876 corps members successfully completed their service.

    Momoh said that six corps members received Chairman’s Commendation while 20 corps members got the state coordinator’s attestation.

    The coordinator said that 23 corps members would repeat their service for absconding from duty.

    He also said that 17 others would have their service extended for various periods as a punishment.

    “Just as NYSC recognises and rewards excellence, the scheme also punishes corps members, who breach its rules and guidelines.

    “I wish, therefore, to report that 23 corps members absconded from service and they are to repeat the service.

    “Seventeen others are to serve various periods of extension of service.’’

    Momoh said that the successful corps members contributed their quotas to the overall development of Nigeria through their primary assignments and various community development services.

    He said that the contributions were in the areas of education, healthcare and constructions.

    Momoh commended E-Insurance Solutions Centre Ltd., Ikoyi, for sending four corps members to Kenya for training and employing two of them after their service.

    In his address, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State commended the corps members for their contributions to the development of the state.

    Ambode was represented by Mr Oluseye Oladejo, Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations.

    He listed areas where the corps members made their marks to include education, health, sensitisation and awareness campaign against child abuse/domestic violence, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS.

    “Nigeria is looking forward to you as future leaders that have been equipped with what it takes to achieve the vision of a stronger, more secure, stable and prosperous nation.

    “As you prepare to commence another phase of livelihood, I urge you to keep in mind the lesson of this programme, which is the awareness and appreciation of the diversity of your nation,’’ Ambode said.

    No clash between Corps members and Soldiers in Kano– NYSC Coordinator

    Alhaji Ladan Baba, the Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kano has debunked media reports that there was a clash between soldiers and some corps members in the orientation camp at Karaye Local Government Area of the state.

    A statement by Aliyu Ahmed,the NYSC public relations officer and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kano denied the report.

    According to the Coordinator, there was also no any clash between the military,Paramilitary and the corps members as reported.

    “The attention of the Management of the NYSC has been drawn to news reports of skirmishes between a group of Corps members and the Camp Commandant, Capt. Anyaegbunan during the ongoing 2017 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course at Karaye.

    “We wish to state for the records that the face-off started as a result of actions taken by a group of Corps members in solidarity with their colleagues who were being punished while loitering within the Camp Premises as social activity was going on.

    “The chanting of solidarity songs by the Corps members was an effort to get the erring Corps member released from the Camp Commandant which later ignited a rowdy session”, he said.

    The Coordinator added that the situation was immediately brought under control after he addressed the Corps members on the issue.

    “I promised to interface with the Camp Commandant to ensure that punishment and reward for Corps members are handled in line with the provision of the NYSC Bye law”.

    He reminded the Corps members of the need to adhere to the channel of communication in the Camp and assured them that NYSC Management would continue to implement policies and programmes that will enhance the welfare and security of Corps members in the Camp and during the service year.

    The Coordinator also drew the attention of all media organizations on the need to also adhere to their age-long tradition of balance and objectivity in news reporting.

    He further urged them to always verify their sources of news and to report objectively, saying normalcy has since returned to the Camp as all scheduled activities were on going without hindrance.

    The NYSC Coordinator also called on the public to always ignore such unbalanced reports so as to maintain the existing peace and unity among the corps members and the country at large.

    NYSC raises alarm, says ‘rising number of corps members draining our resources’

    The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen Suleiman Kazaure, has blamed the dwindling resources in the scheme to rising population of corps members.

    Kazaure disclosed this at the opening of the scheme’s Annual Management Conference in Jos on Tuesday.

    The theme of the conference was: `Enhancing the Operations of NYSC through Strategic Planning’.

    The director-general expressed regret that the existing orientation camp facilities had been overstretched due to the increased population of corps members.

    He decried the failure of some state and local governments to meet up with their statutory obligations to the scheme.

    Kazaure, therefore, urged them to be alive to their responsibilities to the scheme.

    He lauded the state and local governments that have shown commitment to the success of the scheme through the upgrade of orientation camp facilities and other forms of support.

    According to him, the scheme recently resuscitated the once-moribund NYSC farm settlements in Bauchi, Kebbi, and Oyo states as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

    He disclosed that the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development centres in Gombe and Ekiti states were nearing completion, while the one in the South-South state of Delta was already functional.

    Kazaure stated that the scheme is now fully computerized and has already begun biometric registration and clearance of corps members toward enhancing its operational efficiency.

    He said that the conference provided an avenue for stakeholders to meet and review the implementation of the scheme with a view to evolving new policy direction, if necessary, for improved service delivery.

    “As we gather here today, participants are poised to evolve more cohesive and clearer strategies for administration and management of resources, especially against the backdrop of the country’s current economic realities.

    “The focus of the conference is for brainstorming and coming up with practicable solutions and strategies that will reposition and promote the ideals of the scheme in both the present and future,” he said.

    In a message to the conference, the Plateau State Governor, Mr Simon Lalong, represented by his deputy, Sonni Tyoden, praised the director-general for the ongoing reforms in the scheme.

    Lalong expressed satisfaction with the contribution of the scheme, especially in rural areas, in terms of education, health, agriculture through the corps members Community Development Programmes.

  • Reject corps members at your peril, Ganduje warns govt, private organisations

    Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Wednesday warned public and private organisations in the state against rejecting corps members posted to them.

    The governor spoke during the closing ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘B’ orientation course at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) permanent orientation camp, Kusalla in Karaye Local Government Area.

    According to him, such act by some government and private organisations is capable of dampening the morale of the corps members.

    Ganduje said: “We have received reports that some organisations are in the habit of rejecting corp members posted to their organisations by the NYSC.

    “Therefore, I enjoined the corps’ employers to accept them and engage them meaningfully.”

    He urged the corps members to extend the positive traits they have imbibed and exhibited during the orientation course at their places of primary assignment and host communities.

    “Passionately pursue the lofty ideals of the scheme and serve selflessly so that your host communities benefit immensely during your service year,”Ganduje advised.

    While assuring them of adequate security, Ganduje implore the corps members to work hard as his government will continue to reward outstanding performances at the end of the service year.

    In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf, said the scheme in collaboration with various agencies have prepared the youths for the task of nation-building.

    Yusuf said in line with the aspiration to meet the `felt-needs’ of the people of Kano State, many of the corps members were posted to serve in rural areas, where there is shortage of manpower.

    He charged them to accept the postings in good faith and contribute meaningfully to enrich the lives of the rural dwellers.
