    Vendors selling fake cosmetics in Abuja arrested

    The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday in Abuja arrested five persons for selling counterfeit cosmetics.

    The arrest was made at the Garki and Wuse axis, during an enforcement to curb substandard goods.

    Speaking with newsmen after the enforcement,  Mr Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, NAFDAC Head of Investigation and Enforcement, Federal Taskforce, said that the arrested persons would be investigated.

    Godiya said that NAFDAC would work to ensure that fake cosmetics and other counterfeit product were completely wipe out of the country.

    He said that the agency had been investigate some of these counterfeit cosmetics, following an intelligence reports, adding that some of these products were illegally imported into the country, in spite security at the border.

    “NAFDAC is present in all the ports of entry of the country, but with the nature of our borders, these smugglers will always find a way to beat the system that government had put in place.

    “That is why if they escape from the port or borders, we go to the market and to all the places, gather intelligence report, go after them and confiscate these product for possible prosecution,” Godiya said.

    He said that the market value of the seized cosmetics is N35 million, adding that NAFDAC would continue investigation into the issue, to unravel the level of involvement of the suspects.

    Godiya said that after investigation, the management of the agency would take its regulatory action, which probably may be prosecution of those suspects for the crime committed.

    He called on Nigerians to collaborate with NAFDAC to fight counterfeit products in the country.

    NAFDAC warns against use of YW cosmetics glycolic acid

    The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned against the use of a cosmetic product, YW Cosmetics Glycolic Acid, containing 70 per cent content.

    The warning is contained in a public alert with No. 032/2022, signed by the Director-General of the agency, Prof. Moji Adeyeye and released on Tuesday in Abuja.

    Adeyeye stated that the agency was equally informed of the product by the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL).

    According to her, 70 per cent of glycolic acid is a strong acidic alpha hydroxyl-acid (AHA) and is the most popular used in skin care.

    She said that the product was manufactured from sugar cane, and “is the smallest AHA, and the most effective at getting into the skin”.

    “It is a substance that chemically exfoliates the skin by dissolving dead skin cells and oils.

    “Products containing AHAs are marketed for a variety of purposes, such as smoothing fine lines and surface wrinkles, improving skin texture and tone, unblocking and cleansing pores, and improving skin condition in general.

    “Alpha hydroxy acids can also cause mild skin irritation, redness, swelling, itching, and skin discolouration.

    “Facial peels left on the skin for periods longer than recommended can cause severe burns to the skin.

    “The product comes in a 50ml bottle and is traded online without a batch and lot identification number,” Adeyeye said.

    According to her, NAFDAC implores consumers to exercise caution in the use of YW Cosmetics Glycolic Acid.

    “Healthcare professionals, consumers and patients are encouraged to report adverse events related to the use of this product to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC PRASCOR on (20543 TOLLS FREE from all networks).

    “The public is also encouraged to report adverse effects via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng or via the NAFDAC ADR e-Reporting platform available at www.nafdac.gov.ng.

    NAFDAC receives directive to control sale of beauty creams in Nigeria

    The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to rise up to its duty of regulating importation, formulation and sale of beauty creams and other cosmetics within Nigeria.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Senate gave NAFDAC the directive on Tuesday, following a motion moved by Senator Oluremi Tinubu on the need for the Agency to move swiftly to regulate formulation and distribution of cosmetics in the country.

    The Senate also directed NAFDAC to maintain a products database, showing name and address of manufacturers and ingredients list; while also mandating the Agency to embark on sensitization and awareness campaigns on the ills of these harmful substances.

    The legislative chamber also directed NAFDAC and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) to collaborate towards ensuring the tracking of Consumer injury; while also mandating the Senate committee on Health to investigate the procedures in place for certification on quality and safety of Cosmetics, and propose a way forward for accountability.
