Japan PM fires aide who said he ‘wouldn’t want to live next to’ a gay couple

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has fired a government aide who made derogatory remarks about LGBT couples.

Masayoshi Arai reportedly said he would not want to live next to, or look at, people in same-sex relationships.

Mr Arai also warned that permitting gay marriage in Japan would lead to many abandoning the country.

Mr Kishida said the remarks were “outrageous” and “completely incompatible” with his government’s policies.

Japan – a country still largely bound by traditional gender roles and family values – is the only G7 nation that does not recognise same-sex marriage.

However, recent polling suggests most Japanese support gay marriage.

A number of same-sex couples have also filed lawsuits across Japan in recent years arguing that the ban on same-sex marriage violates the country’s constitution.

Prior to Mr Arai’s dismissal, Mr Kishida had talked about issues surrounding same-sex marriage in parliament.

He stated that it needed to be carefully considered because of its potential impact on traditional family structures.

Mr Arai reacted to the remarks afterwards, telling reporters that he “wouldn’t like it if [LGBT couples] lived next door” and “doesn’t even want to look at them.”

He added that it would “change the way society is” and “quite a few people would abandon this country,” according to Kyodo News.

In response, Mr Kishida said he had dismissed Mr Arai, adding: “We have been respecting diversity and realising an inclusive society.”

Mr Arai later apologised, stating that his remarks were not appropriate and were not representative of the prime minister’s views.

His resignation represents a further blow to Mr Kishida, whose government has seen plummeting approval ratings after a number of his ministers have resigned over various scandals in recent months.

  • Seven easy ways to fix snoring (SEE Details)

Seven easy ways to fix snoring (SEE Details)

You may be among the 45% of normal adults who snore at least occasionally or you likely know someone who does.

He (or she) may be the brunt of jokes at family gatherings (“Uncle X snores so loudly he rattles the windows!”), but snoring is serious business.

For one, a snoring spouse often keeps the other person from a good night’s sleep, which can eventually lead to separate bedrooms. “Snoring can create real problems in a marriage”

Not only is snoring a nuisance, but 75% of people who snore have obstructive sleep apnea (when breathing is disrupted during sleep for short periods), which increases the risk of developing heart disease, Slaughter says.

Here are the natural solutions and lifestyle changes, which may help you stop snoring.

    1. CHANGE YOUR SLEEP POSITION.

Lying on your back makes the base of your tongue and soft palate collapse to the back wall of your throat, causing a vibrating sound during sleep. Sleeping on your side may help prevent this.

“A body pillow (a full-length pillow that supports your entire body) provides an easy fix,”. It enables you to maintain sleeping on your side and can make a dramatic difference.

Taping tennis balls to the back of your pajamas can also stop you from sleeping on your back, Chokroverty says. “Or you can recline the bed with the head up and extended, which opens up nasal airway passages and may help prevent snoring. This may cause neck pain, however.” If snoring continues regardless of the sleep position, obstructive sleep apnea may be a cause. “See a doctor in this case,”

    2. LOSE WEIGHT

Weight loss helps some people but not everyone. Thin people snore, too.

If you’ve gained weight and started snoring and did not snore before you gained weight, weight loss may help. “If you gain weight around your neck, it squeezes the internal diameter of the throat, making it more likely to collapse during sleep.

    3. AVOID ALCOHOL.

Alcohol and sedatives reduce the resting tone of the muscles in the back of your throat, making it more likely you’ll snore. “Drinking alcohol four to five hours before sleeping makes snoring worse,” Research shows that “People who don’t normally snore will snore after drinking alcohol.”

    4. PRACTICE GOOD SLEEP HYGIENE.

Poor sleep habits (also known as poor sleep “hygiene”) can have an effect similar to that of drinking alcohol.

Working long hours without enough sleep, for example, means when you finally hit the sack you’re overtired. You sleep hard and deep, and the muscles become floppier, which creates snoring.

    5. OPEN NASAL PASSAGES.

If snoring starts in your nose, keeping nasal passages open may help. It allows air to move through slower. Imagine a narrow garden hose with water running through. The narrower the hose, the faster the water rushes through.

Your nasal passages work similarly. If your nose is clogged or narrowed due to a cold or other blockage, the fast-moving air is more likely to produce snoring.

A hot shower before you go to bed can help open nasal passages. Also, keep a bottle of saltwater rinse in the shower. Rinse your nose out with it while you’re showering to help open up passages.

A neti pot could also be used to rinse out the nasal passages with a salt-water solution.

Nasal strips may also work to lift nasal passages and open them up — if the problem exists in your nose and not within the soft palate.

    6. CHANGE YOUR PILLOWS.

Allergens in your bedroom and in your pillow may contribute to snoring. When did you last dust the overhead ceiling fan? Replace your pillows?

Dust mites accumulate in pillows and can cause allergic reactions that can lead to snoring. Allowing pets to sleep on the bed causes you to breathe in animal dander, another common irritant.
If you feel fine during the day but obstructed at night, these things may be contributing to your snoring.

Put your pillows in the air fluff cycle once every couple weeks and replace them every six months to keep dust mites and allergens to a minimum. And keep pets out of the bedroom.

Beware before spending money on special pillows designed to prevent snoring.
They may work if it props up your head, which fixes nasal issues, but can cause neck pain.”

    7. STAY WELL HYDRATED.

Drink plenty of fluids. Secretions in your nose and soft palate become stickier when you’re dehydrated. This can create more snoring. According to the Institute of Medicine, healthy women should have about 11 cups of total water (from all drinks and food) a day; men require about 16 cups.

Overall, get enough sleep, sleep on your side, avoid alcohol before bedtime and take a hot shower if nasal passages are clogged, Slaughter says. These simple practices can make a huge difference in reducing snoring.

Go after killers of Ogun couple, Gov. Abiodun directs police

Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun has given a marching order to Ogun Police Command to go after the killers of a couple, Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye.

Abiodun stated this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kunle Somorin.

The couple was killed and their house at GRA, Ibara in Abeokuta set ablaze on Jan. 1, by yet-to-be-identified assassins.

The governor declared that the killers, who also kidnapped the couple’s son and threw him inside the river, would not go unpunished, saying the police must go after them and apprehend them.

He described the incident as unfortunate and heart-breaking, vowing that his administration would not hesitate to deploy resources with the view of unmasking persons behind the dastard act.

The governor noted that the incident shocked him, particularly when efforts had been geared by his administration towards strengthening the security architecture within the state.

He stressed that no effort would be spared in bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

While expressing his sympathy to the families of the deceased, Abiodun assured them that the murder would be unravelled and persons responsible would be brought to justice.

He stated that further logistic support would be rendered to the police to ensure that the crime did not go down as one of the unresolved murder incidents in history.

While assuring the people of the state that his administration would continue to do everything to provide adequate security of both lives and property, the governor reiterated that Ogun would not be a safe haven for criminals.

He said: “My heart goes out to the families of Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye.

“The incident indeed shocked me; it was unfortunate and tragic. I can imagine the pains the families would be going through at this period when everyone is still basking in euphoria of the New Year.

“This is a grievous crime, no doubt. I have directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure that everything is done in order to arrest the people behind the dastard act.

“I assure you that the perpetrators will not go unpunished. Such an heinous crime should not go without making the people responsible face the full wrath of the law.

“Though, our administration had since strengthened the security architecture in the state, we shall continue to provide logistics to the security agencies in order to make our state the safest to live, work and play.”

The police command in Kano State, says a couple has been found dead on its matrimonial bed in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, believed to have died of suffocation from charcoal fumes.

SP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the command said this in a statement in Kano on Wednesday.

He gave the names of the couple as Sulaiman Idris, 28, and Maimuna Haliru, 20.

“We received a report on Jan.3, at about 9.00 p.m from Kwa Village in Dawakin Tofa LGA that a couple was discovered not to have come out of its matrimonial home since it was last seen on Jan. 2 at about 11:00 p.m.

“When the grandmother of Idris forced the door open, she discovered the couple motionless on the matrimonial bed, with smoke odour pervading the room.

“On receipt of the report, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Dauda, directed a team of detectives led by CSP Ahmed Hamza, DPO Dawakin Tofa Division to proceed to the scene.

“The bodies of the victims were removed from the scene and rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano where a medical doctor confirmed them dead,” Haruna-Kiyawa said.

The police image maker said that preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased couple lit a charcoal fire to warm the room due to cold weather.

“They locked up and got suffocated by the smoke that emanated from the burning charcoal burning while fast asleep,” he said.

He said investigation into the incident was still in progress.

Haruna-Kiyawa advised the people of the state to be careful while using fire from charcoal, urging them to always take safety measures, because harmattan season was associated with high risk of fire outbreaks.

The corpse of Oreoluwa Fatinoye, son of the couple who were allegedly killed by assassins in Abeokuta on new year’s day, has been recovered from Ogun river.

The deceased was reportedly thrown into a river on Adigbe-Obada road in Abeokuta after being kidnapped by the assailants who had murdered his parents.

The decomposing body of Oreoluwa was discovered floating on the river by fishermen on Tuesday morning.

Oreoluwa’s parents, Mr. Kehinde and Mrs. Bukola Fatinoye were killed by yet-to-be-identified persons in the early hours of Sunday, Jan. 1.

The couple reportedly died during the incident that occurred at their residence, located within Ibara Government Reservation Area (GRA), Abeokuta.

  • Dunni and Seinde Arigbede: Couple who live for tomorrow – By Owei Lakemfa

Dunni and Seinde Arigbede: Couple who live for tomorrow – By Owei Lakemfa

It was in 1979. Words went round the University in Ife that students of Ijaw nationality should  gather at the  Post Graduate Hall to listen to an emissary. Then walked in a tall, slim man. He talked about the neglect of the Niger Delta, its exploitation and the need for us to resist.

Tony Engurube was a self-assured man who had lived in Sweden before being thrown out for trying to guide its youths towards revolution. I am not sure the contribution I made, but he told me to wait for further discussions.

Then he asked me to accompany him on a visit to a friend at the staff quarters.   They were similarly built: Engurube  and our host, Dr Biodun Jeyifo. As I watched these strange men embrace and talk excitedly about an idyllic past and future, seemingly oblivious of my presence, I realised they had been in some underground movement in the recent past. That was when the name, Seinde Arigbede, dropped.

As the months went by and I joined the radical students  movement,  the name loomed over. The person seemed mysterious, like some fairy tale.  Essentially, it was about a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine who in furtherance of his resolve to build an-exploitation-free society, not only  left his highly prestigious and good paying job, but also abandoned the comfort of campus life for an uncertain and rustic one in a rural village.

More intriguing was that his wife, Dunni, a nurse, had also taken the same decision. This was a strange phenomenon in a country where the flow of life is  from the abandoned rural areas,  to the glittering cities with their supermarkets and super highways, clubs and hotels where the middle and upper classes dazzle and float.

The debate went on in our circles whether  this ‘class suicide’  was a correct step to take. But this was more of an ideological debate. There was an assumption that in relocating to the rural areas and living amongst farmers, the Arigdedes believed that the Nigerian revolution would be led by the peasantry rather than workers which was the main Marxist-Leninist line.  So were they some Maoists?

When eventually, I met Dr Arigbede, he was to dispel all those stories. He  was so well read that I felt like an illiterate.  He recommended various books and seemed forever trying to learn from my colleague, Adeolu Ademoyo and I. His interests included current  events in Ife and campuses across the country. How do we hope to mobilise students and youths  for the liberation of the country?

He threw me off balance when in realising that we were from the Drama Department, he switched to discussing not just the arts but drama. We discovered that he was quite familiar with our Head of Department, Professor Wole Soyinka and had actually been part of the latter’s early 1970s film, ‘Kongi’s Harvest’, though he had professional disagreements  with the future Nobel Laureate over the use of his dance steps in the film. So the medical doctor  was also a professional dancer? It was at that point I became conscious of Dr Arigbede’s beautiful command of English language with an arresting, booming voice which seemed naturally made for broadcasting or the theatre.

But more shocks were to come when I learnt  that he was a song writer, composer, vocalist and guitarist who had performed before audiences. His wife, Comrade Dunni Arigbede, was comparatively reserved but was a full revolutionary who made us feel welcome to their home in Ode Omu, in today’s Osun State. Sometimes, we simply sat with her to learn at her feet.

We had long discussions and debates and were constantly reviewing tactics and strategies.

Once, Adeolu  and I got information that there were some villagers in Ife who wanted to learn how to read and write in English language. We informed the Arigbedes who took us through some tutelage on how to mobilise the peasantry. Together, we designed a literacy programme. That was the beginning of an adult education programme in the villages of Abagboro and Oke Ake  which Adeolu and I ran on Sunday afternoons.

We developed peasant  cells in those places with potentials  of  developing  more, but we had no party to harvest them. Besides, we were also involved in many other things such as the Ife Students Union, helping to run and popularise the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, which was in its infancy, running  the radical Alliance of Progressive Students, ALPS, and being part of Left organisations on campus and nationally. Yet, we were students who needed to attend lectures and pass examinations!  It was a grooming like no other.

The Arigbedes  had developed and fabricated agricultural equipment that could revolutionise farming in the country. This had come to the notice of the  Ondo State Government.  Governor Adekunle Ajasin whose Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN,  had rural development as a cardinal programme, invited them to put their knowledge and invention to practice. This was in the early 1980s.

Then, there were the 1983 gubernatorial   elections and people poured out into the streets to stop the opposition National Party of Nigeria, NPN, from stealing the vote.

The NPN which was the ruling party at the centre, sent in armed military and security forces to subdue the populace in what turned out to be a quite bloody ‘war’ in which many were killed. The invading forces believed that  Dr. Arigbede must have been one of those who mobilised the mass resistance. They ‘captured’ him as a prisoner of war.

Professor Soyinka  in the 1988 preface to his famous book The Man Died. narrated what happened next: “ Seinde Arigbede did not die…(he)  was taken to an empty cell, where he was  hung up by the wrists and left dangling, his feet away from the ground, from specially fixed ceiling hooks.

Between beatings and other forms of torture the question was incessantly put: Where is the training camp? …His wife, Aduni, moved with desperation in every possible direction and, through intervention from  higher  police quarters, Seinde’s ordeal was ended  after a week.”

This was one of the ordeals  the unique couple underwent in their unshakable resolve to build  a better Nigeria. Their sacrifice, commitment and contribution to the emancipation of the oppressed and repressed,  are  unquantifiable. However, these are not the type of people given national honours.

The legendary warrior of the working class, Dr Makanjuola Olaseinde Arigbede, on Friday, November 4, 2022  marched on.  He left   Comrade Dunni the task of leading their children, Rotimi and  Irawo and others in interring his earthly  remains on December 16, 2020.  The story of Dunni and Seinde Arigbede, the couple who live for tomorrow, is yet untold.

Police arrest couple for stealing new born baby in Osun state
