The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Ogun State, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, said that 339 students bagged First Class Honours in the 2023/2024 academic session.

Adebayo disclosed this during the 19th Convocation ceremony for the Conferment of First and Higher Degrees, and presentation of prizes on Friday in Ota.

According to him, 1,456 students graduated for the 2023/2024 academic session. This comprised 339 students who made first class, 762 second class upper honours, 330 second class lower, third class 25 and 151 in the post-graduate categories.

Sanni Oluwademilade, a student in the Department of Industrial Mathematics, College of Mathematics, emerged as the best-graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.99.

Adebayo said, “the release of Eagles 2024 will join our network of over 24,000 Covenant Eagles, who are already soaring globally, building the old wastes and raising the former desolations.

“The University is immensely grateful to God as another cohort of new generation leaders are being unleashed in the ecosphere as agents of positive change in our nation, continent and the world.”

The VC said that the university had been ranked by Higher Times Education in the World Universities Ranking 2025, as the best university in Nigeria and number one in West Africa.

Earlier, David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of the institution, said the passion of the university came alive to provide an alternate education in terms of quality that would rescue young individuals from lifelong crises.

According to him, from the onset, there was an understanding that Covenant University was heading to become one of the best in the world.

“No wonder it has been an award-winning university almost since its inception. As you know, we are one of the most subscribed private universities in Nigeria today, to the glory of God,” he said.

The Chancellor said that the university was solving character problems among young people and committed to remain a solution-bearing institution.

In his address, Bishop David Abioye, the Pro-Chancellor of the university, admonished the graduates to exercise patience in all of their endeavours as they graduate from the citadel of learning.

Abioye, who tagged his address as “Necessity of Patience”, said the university has modelled them to leaders, adding that it is time for them to go into society and be game changers.

The Pro-Chancellor advised the graduates to provide solutions to the challenges facing their respective communities and soar as eagles.

Subsidy removal: Covenant University increases workers’ salary by 20%

The Board of Regents, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, has approved 20 per cent salary increase for all the staff of the institution.

Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Ota.

Adebayo said the decision by the Board to implement the salary increase was to cushion the adverse effect of the removal of fuel subsidy, which led to a rise in inflation in the country.

“The VC appreciated the Board of Regents of the University, led by the Chancellor, Dr. David  Oyedepo, in making such a compassionate decision to alleviate the harsh economic situation of the country for the University’s workforce,” he said.

According to Adedayo, the salary increase will take effect from September to boost the morale and commitment of the Faculty and Staff of the University.

He added that this has also engendered a fresh drive and vigour in the pursuit of its vision of raising a new generation of leaders and the actualisation of its newly unfolded Vision 7-2030 agenda.

  • How Nigerian universities can emerge world class – Covenant varsity VC

How Nigerian universities can emerge world class – Covenant varsity VC

The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Otta, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, has said that Nigerian universities require intensive and impactful research, alongside teaching and community service to emerge world class.

Adebayo said this at a workshop held at the University of Benin on Thursday.

The workshop was captioned, “University ranking: Experiences of Covenant University”.

The workshop was organised by the University of Benin’s Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI).

The vice-chancellor said that  universities in Nigeria could not continue to do what they were used to and expect different results.

Covenant University, he said, had long resolved to be doing even what the world class universities, such as Havard and Oxford, were not doing; hence its high rating amongst the world higher institutions.

“Most universities in Nigeria concentrate on teaching and, perhaps, community service and have left out the area of research.

“Impactful research is almost non-existent in most of the universities,” Adebayo said.

According to him, to secure first ranking in Africa, the university had set a vision of 10:2022, meaning to be among the best 10 in the world by 2022.

He said that although the University of Benin was not doing badly, it would need to improve on its publications, particularly in Q1 and Q2 journals.

Besides teaching, research and impact, Adebayo identified citation, reputation, international outlook and industry income as other metrics considered for universities ranking across the world.

“You have to go beyond your best to accomplish some of those things.

“If we want to become world class universities, beyond classroom teachings, we have to spend extra time to do the research.

“We must go beyond the kind of civil service work we do.

“The world is a global village and the rankings of universities have really come to stay.

“Whether or not you wished to be ranked, you will be ranked.

“It is high time, whether management, staff or students, we worked together to see that we place our universities on the world map, standing at par with other world universities,” he said.

In a remark, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, said that the lecture had brought out all the deficiencies and things that the institution was doing rightly.

“I think the most important thing is that we all have determined that we can do it because he has simplified how we can get to that world class level.

“At the University of Benin, we are also proud to be the University of the universe, but we must match our words with our actions.

  • Analysis: How top Nigerian universities evolved in global rankings

Analysis: How top Nigerian universities evolved in global rankings

The recent global rankings of world universities released by the Times Higher Education for 2024 has revealed the dynamic and competitive nature of the academic landscape of higher education in Nigeria.

These rankings, which evaluate universities based on various criteria including teaching, research quality, industry engagement, and international exposure, provide a valuable assessment of the academic standing of Nigerian institutions.

Nigeria is home to a diverse range of higher education institutions, numbering nearly 130, encompassing federal, state-owned, and private universities.

One notable highlight is the substantial 225 per cent increase in the number of Nigerian universities featured this year, from 12 to a total of 39 institutions.

In terms of the university rankings, there have been intriguing shifts at the top. The University of Ibadan which ranked first in 2023 moved to the second position in the latest ranking, while Covenant University leaped from its previous third-place standing to claim the top spot.

Conversely, the University of Lagos, which once held the second rank, has now slipped to the fourth position, while the Federal University of Technology, Akure, moved from the 5th rank in 2023 to an impressive third place in the 2024 rankings.

In addition, Bayero University, which previously held the 4th position, experienced a slight dip, now securing the 5th place.

However, on a continental scale, the University of Cape Town has secured the leading position in Africa, showcasing a significant advancement from the 237th to the 173rd position on the global scale.

Following closely, the University of the Witwatersrand has claimed the second spot on the continent, securing the 264th position worldwide.

Stellenbosch University has exhibited remarkable progress by ascending from its 454th position last year to a commendable 283rd position this year, solidifying its standing as the third-best university in Africa.

While South Africa boasts the highest number of highly ranked universities, Egypt stands at the forefront in terms of the total number of universities featured on the list, boasting an impressive count of 15 institutions. South Africa closely follows with 11 institutions, showcasing an increase from the previous year’s count of nine universities.

Nigeria’s universities ranked 16th, 19th, 31st, 35th and 48th positions in Africa. Factors such as inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, limited research output, and a lack of international collaborations contribute to this predicament.

The rankings which show the global reputation of Nigerian higher education,  act as a catalyst for universities to strive for excellence across various academic dimensions, as universities must adapt and innovate, ensuring that the quality of education and research aligns with international standards.
