Kogi health agency reacts to allegation of COVID-19 vaccination bribery

The Kogi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KSPHCDA) has reacted to an allegation by an NGO, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) at a news conference in Bauchi State, that vaccine administrators in Kogi have allegedly demanded money from clients before vaccinating them.

Reacting to the allegation through a statement by the Executive Director of the agency, Dr Abubakar Yakubu, on Tuesday in Lokoja, said the report was misleading and far from the reality of COVID-19 vaccination in the state.

He stressed that the report was most likely not true as the NGO failed to back up its purported findings with actual facts, and without using, appropriate channels.

The KSPHCDA boss added that the said discovery should have been addressed to the appropriate agency in the state, rather than addressing newsmen in Bauchi.

Yakubu added that the agency had been engaging in high-level social sensitisation and mobilisation advocacy across communities in the state, in order to improve on the vaccination exercise.

”How can something we are practically persuading people to take now be the same thing we are demanding for money before administering?” Yakubu queried.

He emphasised that the agency was closely monitoring the activities of the administrators and how they persuaded people across the state to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

He maintained that the claim by the NGO was practically impossible to happen in Kogi, where the Agency and the State Ministry of Health were still doing high-level advocacy and community sensitisation alongside relevant NGOs for COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

”The state government completely reject the report and thereby demand an immediate and unreserved apology from the publisher of the fake news as well as its generator, CITAD.

“Failure to tender an apology, the government will take punitive measures against the NGO and its collaborators,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yakubu explained that the agency had set up a team of investigators who were painstakingly analysing the report in order to expose the perpetrators as well as the motive behind their action.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Folayan Idowu, the State Coordinator National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) described the publication, as unfounded.

Idowu, who is also a member of the State Joint Task Force on COVID-19 Vaccination, said the task force had been embarking on weekly patrol to monitor the administration of COVID-19 vaccines across the state.

He added that there was no record of such an incident.

The Hellenic Republic of Greece has donated one million doses Johnson and Johnson Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine to Nigeria to support the fight against the pandemic.

Greek’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nikos Dendias, announced the donation on Monday in Abuja during a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

Dendias said the donation was a support of the Greek government to Nigeria, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic had shown the world that countries need one another.

“I am happy that I am symbolically bringing a present with me to the Nigerian people and this is almost a million vaccines.

“All the world is suffering from COVID-19, but one huge achievement through this suffering that we clearly understand is that we are one community, that nobody is safe unless everybody is safe.

“Health is a global good and all of us are under the moral obligation to be providers of health wherever assistance is needed.

“And all of us are under the moral obligation to be providers of help whenever and wherever assistance is needed.

“So happy to make this small contribution to the Nigerian people,” Dendias said.

Dendias also assured Nigerians that the vaccines are not expired ones.

Onyeama appreciated the Greek government for its support to Nigeria, stressing that concerted efforts were needed to effectively tackle the pandemic.

He also assured that the vaccines would be used judiciously.

Newsmen reports that both ministers described the visit as a historic one that seeks to strengthen the bilateral and economic ties between both countries.

Both ministers signed an MoU to strengthen bilateral ties, mull areas of mutual benefits.

COVID-19 Vaccine: Lagosians to pay ‘N6,000’ administrative charge in private facilities

Lagosians who wish to take the Covid-19 vaccine at a private facility will have to pay N6,000 as an administrative charge.

The vaccine remains free at public facilities.

The Lagos state government made this known on Wednesday in a press briefing signed by Gboyega Akosile, a spokesman to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The statement noted that the decision to extend the vaccination drive to private facilities was part of efforts to encourage more people to receive the jab.

“Sanwo-Olu re-emphasised that the vaccines being administered are safe and remain free of charge in public health facilities,” the statement said.

“The Governor, however, said an administrative charge of N6,000 would be paid by individuals who wish to get the vaccines at approved private facilities.”

The Governor had on Wednesday warned that a fourth wave of the virus was possible as travellers from across the world enter the city for the December festivities, prompting the state government to launch a mass vaccination campaign.

The accelerated vaccine rollout is tagged: “Operation Count Me in 4 Million Lagosians Vaccinated Against COVID-19” and it is being undertaken by Lagos State Government in collaboration with Federal Government’s National Primary Health Care Development.

Since March, at least 1.2 million persons have received one shot of the vaccine, while 550,000 have been fully vaccinated in Lagos, according to state figures.

  • Why Nigerian workers should take COVID-19 vaccine – NLC President

Why Nigerian workers should take COVID-19 vaccine – NLC President

The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba on Monday asked workers across the country to take the COVID-19 vaccine for a chance to stay alive.

Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, Wabba appealed to workers to take advantage of vaccination provisions made by the Federal Government, in order to reduce hospitalisations and fatalities among workers.

According to him, while health issues need to be approached with great caution, it would be foolhardy to undermine the protective powers of vaccines against the virus.

“The truth is that despite being imperfect, the COVID-19 vaccine has given all of us a better chance of fighting the virus and staying alive,” he said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought some of the biggest strains, stress and squeeze to the workplace. Thousands of workers have already died. In fact, just last week, the World Health Organisation posited that as of the third week of October, we have lost about 180,000 frontline health workers.

“I understand some people prefer to view COVID-19 vaccination with caution. Yes, it is important to proceed on issues of public health with great caution. Yet, it would be foolhardy to elevate caution above scientific evidence and facts from public health records.

“I urge workers all over the world to take advantage of the COVID-19 vaccines and keep themselves, their families and their colleagues at work safe and free from the morbid threats of the corona pandemic.”

The NLC President’s appeal follows the recent directive of the Federal Government that civil servants who refuse to be vaccinated will need to show test results, confirming that they are negative before they can access public offices, beginning from December 1.

BREAKING: FG sets December 1st Deadline for civil servants to get COVID-19 vaccine

The Federal Government has set a deadline of December 1 for civil servants to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, announced this at a briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.

“With effect from 1st December 2021, Federal Government employees shall be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result done within 72 hours to gain access to their offices in all locations within Nigeria and our Missions.

“An appropriate service-wide advisory/circular will be issued to guide the process,” the SGF said.

He also revealed that the government has removed South Africa, Brazil, and Turkey from the list of countries where travellers have been restricted from coming into Nigeria as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mustapha explained that the government took the decision to lift the ban following an emergency meeting held before the briefing.

He also commended the United Kingdom for reviewing its travel protocols which allowed fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria to enter the country without having to self-isolate after their arrival.

“Over several months, four countries were placed on high-level restriction for travellers from such countries,” the SGF said. “The PSC has after a review of the developments in these countries, decided to remove South Africa, Turkey, and Brazil from the restricted list.

“As you are aware, the UK has eased restrictions on fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria to the UK with effect from 11th October. Nigeria welcomes this development and assures that the PSC shall continue to review Nigeria’s protocols based on global developments, science, and national experience. A revised protocol will be issued in the next 24 hours.”

He alerted Nigerians on the forthcoming two major religious festivities – Salah and Christmas, noting that there would be increased passenger traffic in and out of the country Similarly and possibly events of large gatherings.

Mustapha, who said the PSC would escalate surveillance and other control activities, urged the states and all Nigerians to increase their vigilance.

Pastor Adeboye states condition to get COVID-19 vaccine

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has said that he would get vaccinated if it will help in furthering the gospel.

Speaking at the church’s monthly Holy Ghost convention, he said, “I never said to you don’t be vaccinated, you have never heard that from me. Rather than living in fear or doubt, get vaccinated. If you believe that getting vaccinated would put your mind at rest, then go ahead.

“Daddy, are you saying that you too could be vaccinated? If there are nations in the world that say I can not come to preach the gospel there because of vaccination, I will do anything for Jesus Christ.

“If vaccination is going to hinder me from doing the work that God has called me to do, if they asked me to get vaccinated 10 times, I would be vaccinated.”

COVID-19 Vaccines: A Remedy or Poison? – Carl Umegboro

    By Carl Umegboro

Without a doubt, the word COVID-19 is familiar to everyone except infants. Even infants discernibly observed strange changes particularly unusual access toparents that used to be unavailable, during the global lockdown. The pandemic inarguably shook the world and humbled superpowers as equals to third-world countries. Notably, Coronavirus enabled poor-developing countries to also boldly ban citizens and travelers from rich developed nations including USA, United Kingdom, Switzerland amongst others from entry. This was hitherto unbelievable. Above all, the pandemic unimaginably makes health experts – medical practitioners, pharmacists, professors in health fields to submit to security guardswith little knowledge on health for temperature checks.Indeed, Covid-19 shook the world.

Coronavirus diseases, an infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome was first identified amid an outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhab City, Hubei Province, China, and initially reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on December 31, 2019.Amid the outbreak witnessed all manner of predicamentsconfusions, conspiracy theories and fake news against information from WHO and other relevant bodies. In the United States, the then president, Donald Trump spearheaded the conspiracy theories for selfish interests and arrogantly went to extreme by stopping WHOfunding. Excitingly, Joe Biden reviewed it immediately inaugurated. As part of conspiracies, a Cameroonian US-based medical doctor, Stella Immanuel masqueraded with misleading information against WHO prescriptions.

In Nigeria, many accepted the conspiracy theories despiteno scientific proofs. The fallacies against Covid19 include; Covid-19 vaccine causes infertility in women”,Covid19 vaccine alters one’s genetic codes”, 5Gnetwork spreads Coronavirus, Drinking alcohol reduces the risk of infection”, Covid-19 vaccines imbed ‘mark-of-the-beast”, Real vaccines take years to produce”,Covid-19 vaccines attract severe side-effects and allergic reactions, etc. These are all misconceptions, baseless and misleading. First, technology advancement affects speedand produces results faster than centuries ago. Today, the Covid-19 vaccines are facing similar rejections other vaccines prior to it like vaccines for chickenpox, measles, poliomyelitis also faced. From history, many, particularlyAfricans rejected chickenpox vaccines as poison then which led to many deaths of children before it gained acceptability.

On 5th generation (5G) network, scientists have alwaysdeflated the allegations that it causes Coronavirus. In fact, it should be noted that 5G is not the end in the expansion series. It began from G1 network and will continue to advance by innovations of scientists. Some countries are already gearing up for 6th generation network due to advanced benefits. The world is speedily becoming a global village, and it is only realistic by innovations in technology by scientists. And from record, Covid-19 has significantly plagued countries with little or no 5G network coverage including Iran.

Instructively, politicians and religious preachers that are neither medical experts nor trained in health disciplinehave no basis to dabble into health matters. Supernatural healing is an act of divinity, and doesn’t make a non-medical practitioner to become an authority in health matters. Supernatural healing is without doubt real, but doesn’t deny existence of ailments. Besides, it is still through medical tests – science that healings whetherconventional and supernatural are confirmed.

Remarkably, Pastor Paul Enenche, Senior pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre who is also a medical doctor by training believes in supernatural healings and always holds weekly healing services with testimonies, yet encouraged congregation to adhere toCOVID-19 preventive measures and protocols. Apart from compliance to regulations by Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), his church donated medical equipment and safety items worth millions of Naira to government towards combating the pandemic. In addition, his church distributed trailer loads of food items including bags of rice, toiletries, clothes to downtrodden publicincluding non-members and non-Christians during the lockdown. There’s no better way to preach the gospel if it must be goodnews.

By publicly complying with outlined preventive measures, Enenche aptly understands that people have different levels of faith, and that encouraging people to get prevented from the infection doesn’t undermine supremacy of the supernatural. The Glory Dome is the largest Christian auditorium in the world presently, with capacity of 100,000 seaters. Yet, when a lockdown was in place, the church cooperated, operated through House-fellowships. In other words, despite Enenche’s faith in supernatural healings, the clergy understands that preventive measures put in place by health institution should be adhered to in the interest of the general public.

In WHO statistics, from 3 January 2020, a total of 226,236,577 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 4,654,548 deaths from its complications were recorded globally as at 4.18pm on 16 September 2021. In Nigeria, on 17 September 2021, a total of 200,957 confirmed cases, 2647 deaths and 188,817 discharged cases were recorded. These figures affirm that COVID-19 is not a myth but real. The fact remains that from January 2020 to date, the world has recorded unprecedented deaths and sicknesses with COVID-19 symptoms. Sadly, these deathsdidn’t take place far from those rebuffing the outbreak. In fact, many medical doctors had been infected; some died, some survived. Emphatically, information from WHO are superior to individual-opinions of any medicalpractitioner anywhere on health issues. This must be noted. Interestingly, COVID vaccines are administeredfree. Though, public acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines increases gradually, progression is vital.

To sum, preventive measures including approved vaccineshealth experts prescribe as remedies to the outburst should be welcomed without fears. To conspiracy theorists, theymust note that the bloods of those that died following their misleading claims are on their heads. What is expected from leaders particularly religious preachers is to pray against the pandemic and support governments by encouraging their followers to adhere to prescribed preventive measures. Other preachers like RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye deserve commendationfor unyielding supports in the fight against the pandemic. To mislead gullible individuals or mischievously castigate health experts working round the clock to save lives is injudicious. Like Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch philosopher said, “prevention is better than cure. So, takeprotective measures. Covid-19 remains deadly.

Man who ridiculed, rejected COVID-19 vaccines on sickbed dies of virus

A man, Stephen Harmon, who ridiculed COVID-19 vaccines on his social media platforms has died from the disease.

The Californian passed on following a month of battle with the virus. Stephen was a critic of vaccines and made a number of jokes about not getting the vaccination.

“Got 99 problems but a vax ain’t one,” Stephen, a member of Hillsong megachurch tweeted in June.

“Biden’s door-to-door vaccine ‘surveyors’ really should be called JaCovid Witnesses. #keepmovingdork,” he noted in another tweet on July 8. “IF YOU’RE HAVING EMAIL PROBLEMS, I FEEL BAD FOR YOU, SON. I GOT 99 PROBLEMS BUT A VAX AIN’T ONE!”

BBC reports that the 34-year-old died on Wednesday in a hospital outside Los Angeles where he was treated for COVID-19 as well as pneumonia.

Hillsong Founder also confirmed Stephen’s passage a day later.

“Ben has just passed on to us the devastating news that our beloved friend, Stephen Harmon has passed away from Covid. Heartbreaking,” Brian Houston tweeted on his handle.

“He was one of the most generous people I know and he had so much in front of him,” he added in another post.

A few days before he died, he began to document his struggles to stay alive.

“Please pray y’all, they really want to intubate me and put me on a ventilator,” he said, posting photos of himself in his hospital bed.

“Don’t know when I’ll wake up, please pray,” he wrote in his last tweet where he said he had gone under intubation but insisted he would reject the jabs.

His faith, he argued, would protect him and had before his death shared memes.

    NAFDAC approves Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use in Nigeria.

Before now, Nigeria procured Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which is being administered across the country currently to check the spread of coronavirus.

Director-General, NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this on Friday at a news conference in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Adeyeye said the vaccines were reviewed carefully by the NAFDAC staff COVID-19 vaccine committee to make sure that the science behind the development was well understood and in accord with world regulatory activities.

She said NAFDAC used different mechanisms to approve the vaccine.

According to her, the body used reliance, “meaning that a more mature regulatory agency across the globe, we can use that as a basis for our review.”

She said NAFDAC would get the assessment report, know the peculiarity there, then the COVID-19 committee would get to do their job.

NAFDAC had earlier in the year approved the use of AstraZeneca vaccines in Nigeria, which was distributed to states.

The first dose of AstraZeneca vaccines have been administered in Nigeria while administration of the second dose would kick-off in May 2020.
