According to reports, the Air France flight landed in Lagos via Cotonou with 118 passengers on board at 3 p.m. local time while the British High Commission is also exploring options for sending its staff, dependents and other Britons to the UK.

Investigation revealed that the landing of the aircraft was delayed for two hours over what NCAA called “load sheet balancing” but the 260 passengers boarded the flight from Lagos and the aircraft took off to Paris about 3.44 pm local time

It was gathered that the federal government granted Air France – KLM one-week permission to evacuate European citizens from Nigeria.

However, the airlines are also mopping up European citizens from the West Coast because of the projection that COVID-19 spread in Africa might spike in the coming days.

“I am further directed to inform you to undertake the operation strictly based on the protocol guiding the kind of operation under COVID-19 as issued by the Nigerian Aeronautical Authorities, most especially, the All Operators Letter issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) with ref: NCAA/DG/AIR/11/16/108 dated March 23, 2020.”

COVID-19: Avoid panic, focus on precautionary measures – SFH advice Nigerians

The Society for Family Health (SFH), has called on Nigerians not to panic but focus more on precautionary measures to avoid contracting the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dr Omokhudu Idogho, Managing Director, SFH, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Abuja.

“I encourage us all to get past the panic and focus on what we can do each day to make a small difference, like staying home to ensure social distancing.

“Instead of unnecessarily calling out inadequacies, let us all be driven by hope and understanding, putting our foot forward to make things better for our loved ones, for our communities and the society,” he said.

The managing director said that the world had been through worse situations and had overcome them, assuring that Nigeria would also overcome COVID-19.

He said that the government was working to provide the correct information necessay for individuals and communities to protect themselves and their loved ones from getting infected by the virus.

Idogho noted that SHF was engaging the government to see how it can leverage communities and the private sector infrastructure to mitigate the outbreak.

He added that SFH would stay abreast of the rapidly evolving science of the pandemic.

Idogho said that SFH would continue working with its wider ecosystem- communities, private sector and government on preparedness for rapid treatment rollout and vaccine scale up once candidates were approved.

He noted that COVID-19 had rapidly changed individuals and the way they carry out their daily activities.

“It has changed most aspects of our daily lives especially our social interactions but more importantly, it has made us more grateful for life, health and all the little things we ordinarily take for granted.

“Times like this also remind us of our individual responsibility to ensure our collective safety.

“Please be assured that the leadership of SFH bears all our staff, partners, clients and constituents in mind in these trying times,” he noted.

Idogho said that SHF was prioritising the health and safety of Nigerians in the face of the interruptions and uncertainties, and resolved to remain a people centered organisation.

Idogho said the society was working to keep people informed on COVID-19 through various channels by sharing trusted news and facts in English and Pidgin.

” We do this in our online and offline community, drawing from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), relevant agencies and parastatals,” he said.

Idogho commended the NCDC for the work it has been doing to keep the country safe.

He added that the organisation was indebted to the frontline health workers in SFH supported facilities and other health facilities across the country.

“We are also grateful to those working tirelessly to keep our supply chains open in order to deliver essential commodities to those who need them.

“We appreciate our private sector partners who are pivotal for the scale-up of forthcoming solutions to ending COVID-19,” he said.

  • COVID-19: Why we are locking down in Delta – Aniagwu

COVID-19: Why we are locking down in Delta – Aniagwu

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed the necessity of a lockdown in the state, saying it is to protect lives of citizens against the Coronavirus.

The Commissioner for Information in the state, Mr Charles Aniagwu, made this known while briefing newsmen on the outcome of a meeting between Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Central Committee on Prevention of COVID-19 Pandemic in Delta with chairmen of local government councils in the state, on Friday in Asaba.

Aniagwu said that as custodians at the grassroots, council chairmen had the responsibility of sensitizing local communities on the pandemic and to ensure full compliance of all measures announced by the state government, in their domains.

According to him, the need for us to shutdown has become very imperative because if people don’t move, the virus will not move and so, we appeal to our people to assist the government in averting the spread into our state.

“The governor today continued the sensitisation of key stakeholders in the state. This afternoon, we held meetings with chairmen of local government councils with the Commissioner of Police and others in attendance.

“The essence is to inform them of the steps we have taken as a state, and also intimate them on the need for them to go back to their different local governments and continue the sensitisation and be part of the different actions we have also taken.

“Emphasising the need for people to stay at home, the governor has directed that from 6 a.m. on Sunday, no vehicle will be allowed into out of the state, while on April 1, all markets will be closed.

“So, we need the cooperation of the local governments to be able to take these messages to their people and also ensure that they cooperate with the security agencies in their different domains with a view to ensuring effective implementation of these decisions that the government has taken.

“We are happy to report that the chairmen have already started taking actions and what they are doing will deepen our desire to get our people to understand why we have to shutdown at a time like this,’’ he said.

The commissioner acknowledged that the prevailing situation was not the best of times for the people, but expressed confidence that “if we don’t move, the virus will not move. The virus is not airborne and once we are able to get our people to observe these different behaviours, particularly social distancing and closure of markets, we are sure that we will overcome.

“We give God the glory that up till this time, we don’t have it and we pray we don’t have it.”

On his part, Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Delta, Mr Itiako Ikpokpo, said that the meeting emphasised the need for council chairmen to go back to their areas and continue the sensitisation on why government’s directives on the shutdown should be strictly obeyed.

He said that it was in the best interest of everybody to stay at home and maintain social distancing where necessary.

“Today we had an extended Joint Allocations and Accounts Committee (JAAC) meeting. It was extended because we had the Commissioner of Police, the Director, Department of State Services, Secretary to the State Government and of course, Commissioner for Information.

“Top on the agenda was the issues concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for us to look at the areas of concern, and as you are aware, the governor has given direction on this matter in an address to people of the State and country, three times now.

“Where we are now is that we are preparing for a total lockdown or shutdown and we have taken very far-reaching decisions which include time and hours where filling stations can operate, because people really need to stay in their homes.

“Markets need to be shut down; essentials like food can only be sold in large spaces like primary schools where wares can be sold and shut by 4 p.m.

“We also agreed that marriages of more than 20 people in attendance can’t hold, and of course, the issues of churches and CAN have been over-emphasised.

“We have taken the issues of health very seriously and we have directed that all chairmen should go back to their respective local government areas and ensure that markets are fumigated and cleared.

“Emergency numbers have also been placed on red alert and basically, when you come from abroad in this kind of situation, you must self-isolate; so don’t see it as infringing on your rights when people report your presence to the medical health workers,’’ Ikpokpo said.

He assured that the police, the DSS and other stakeholders were ready to enforce the directives “for the health and safety of our people’’.

“All councils have called meetings of different segments – market women, stakeholders of all groups, Presidents-Generals of communities, youth leaders, women leaders, NULGE, NUT and traditional rulers in all local government councils where this message has been passed to them.

“So, what we are going back to do is to reiterate the fact that there is need for us to abide and adhere for the safety of our own people,” he added.

COVID-19: House clears air on being insensitive sharing official vehicles to Reps

The House of Representatives has denied distributing official vehicles to the 360 members of the House at this critical moment that the country is battling to contain the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to a statement signed by Rep. Benjamin Kalu, Spokesman, House of Representatives, not only has the National Assembly been closed since Tuesday the 24th of March in the wake of the pandemic, but most lawmakers are also in their constituencies.

The statement reads: “It has come to the attention of the House of Representatives that a newspaper report on Friday, March 27, 2020, had insinuated that the Green Chamber is distributing official vehicles for the 360 members of the House at this critical moment that the country is battling to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This story is rather unfortunate at this time that Nigeria and Nigerians are striving hard to address the pandemic that has forced the Federal Government, and even the various states’ governments, to take drastic measures.

“Not only has the National Assembly been closed since Tuesday the 24th of March in the wake of the pandemic, but most lawmakers are also in their constituencies.

“As a House, we are not unmindful of the mood of the nation at this critical time and are committed to ensuring the country stands united in this trying times.

“It is out of that commitment that the House on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, introduced and passed the Emergency Economic Stimulus Bill, 2020. It is on record that the leadership of the National Assembly on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, about 24 hours after adjournment, engaged some top government officials in the Executive arm and approved the release of N6.5BN for the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), N10BN for Lagos state, as part of efforts to address the issue of Covid-19 pandemic.

“Despite adjourning for two weeks to curb the spread of the virus, the House had expressed its readiness to reconvene at any time to consider measures aimed at addressing the situation, including a review of the 2020 Appropriation Act, if need be.

“We are committed, as lawmakers, to join hands with the Executive arm to take measures aimed at containing the pandemic and providing succour to Nigerians as a result of the economic shock necessitated by Covid-19 all over the world.

“We, therefore, urge Nigerians to disregard the newspaper report on the vehicles’ distribution as it is mischief taken too far. Just yesterday, the same paper on its back page, claimed that the house “closed shop and went on holiday” three weeks ago, a clear falsehood that is common knowledge. The House only shut down 3 days ago and not three weeks ago as falsely and mischievously reported. The paper chose to ignore all the house did within this time, the special session on addressing the high number of out of school children, intervening in the strike action by FCT health workers, etc.

“We also call on Nigerians to join hands with governments at all levels in addressing the issue of Covid-19 pandemic. Let’s all adhere strictly to the preventive measures taken by the government”.

COVID-19: Nasarawa gov confirms meeting two infected persons at presidential villa

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has revealed that he actually come into contact with two confirmed cases of coronavirus at the presidential villa Abuja while carrying out his official duties.

He disclosed that the virus is not a death sentence for anybody infected because it is treatable.

“We have come to realise that coronavirus is real, it is also deadly, but more importantly and more pleasing is that it is curable, so far in Nigeria, we have continued to see increase on the daily basis about the number of people who are infected by this deadly disease.

“But the good news is that we are seeing the number of people who are also being discharged especially in Lagos after they had been treated, it is confirmed that it is a deadly disease but also curable” he said

The governor who was tested negative of the virus stated this on Friday at the government house while addressing journalists on the state government’s efforts to curtail the spread of coronavirus in the state.

“Few days ago, I went into self-isolation, the reason why I decided to do that is because I came into contact with about two confirmed cases at the presidential villa as a result of carrying out my responsibilities and those two cases were confirmed positive.

“I believe I should show example by going into self-isolation, I gave the medical team the opportunity to actually conduct their test and to show example, I should stay away from the public, my aides and family in case I’m infected, so that I don’t spread it.

“I’m happy to tell you that the result came out negative, my deputy who is always with me also tested negative, the Emir of Lafia who also came into contact with some of the infected person at the villa also tested negative”

He said that due to the proximity of the state to Abuja “it is important for Nasarawa state to take most stringent steps to curtail the spread, the treatment and care of affected persons is extremely high and as a result of that , we don’t have a test center, we are not yet well equip in Nasarawa state.

“We are so lucky that there is a test center in Abuja, Nigeria as a whole has limitations when it comes to severe test for this particular virus,” he said

The governor explained that the state government cannot equip all the isolation centres in the state due to lack of funds but will equip few selected centres based on their proximity to the FCT.

He directed the closure of churches, mosques and motor parks as temporary measures to avoid the spread of the disease.

He maintains further that all social gatherings such as naming ceremonies, weddings and other gatherings are unnecessary at the movement.

He said that all almajiris who are not from the state will be evacuated back to their state while government make efforts to take care of the feeding of indigenous almajiris who are confined in one place.

COVID-19: God has assured He will provide a way out – Bishop Ideh

Rt. Revd. Christian Ideh, the Bishop of Warri Diocese, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has said God has assured He will provide a way out for the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Bishop Ideh made this known in a statement on Friday, stressing that while the lockdown ordered by governments has implications on Easter services, Christians should seize the opportunity to maximize their quiet time.

Ideh urged citizens to obey government decisions on the COVID-19 pandemic, saying the decisions are for the collective good of the people, and that they would have to be alive to be able to serve God.

The statement reads: “Greetings to you all, good people of the Diocese of Warri, and all who love Jesus Christ! The times we are now are difficult times, but God who is faithful, has assured us in His Word that he will provide a way out so that we can endure it (1 Cor. 10:13).

“To avert any outbreak of COVID 19 in Delta or contain its spread if it occurs, the government has directed that all residents in the State are to stay at home from Wednesday, April 1, 2020. This, among other restrictions, will last for two weeks in the first instance.

“The implication for us Christians is that we may not be able to gather in Church on Easter Sunday, for Easter Service and other Services associated with the Easter season. Very painful indeed, you will agree with me.

“All the same, we have to obey the government since the decision is for our collective good (Rom. 13:1-5). We need to be alive to serve God, and that is the intention of government.

“Beloved in Christ, let’s seize the opportunity the lockdown provides to utilize to the maximum our quiet time (personal devotion), couple altar (husband and wife having devotion together), and the family altar (parents, children, etc living in the home having devotion together).

“It is time to stoke the fire of these three altars (personal, couple and family) where the fire has simmered down, while we await Jesus’ second coming. The signs are everywhere that His coming will not delay. So, prepare to meet Him!”
