  • COVID-19 :Lagos adopts biosecurity measures at abattoirs

Lagos State Government has adopted a number of biosecurity measures at every facility within the Oko-Oba abattoir and lairage complex and other slaughter houses in the State to mitigate against the spread of coronavirus and other infectious diseases through these facilities.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Prince Gbolahan Lawal explained that the Government has stopped all non-essential activities such as food vendors and other non-related abattoir activities.

Lawal added that the ban on any religious gathering or any form of gathering that involve more than 20 people would be strictly enforced at the abattoir and slaughter houses in the State adding that they are also expected to provide hand sanitizer and distance thermometer at the entrance of these facilities.

The Commissioner pointed out that it is now important for all unit heads of abattoirs in the State to sensitize all the butchers in their respective abattoirs on the dangers and preventable measures of the Novel COVID-19 as well as the need to sensitize the entire abattoir stakeholders on the need for sick members to stay away from the abattoir and seek medical assistance.

“Posters and handbills on COVID-19 shall be made available at all our abattoir and meat markets emphasizing the symptoms of the disease, the preventive measures to be taken and the phone numbers to contact in cases of a suspected outbreak. It is also important that we increase the level of sanitation of the entire environment at our abattoir and slaughter houses in the State,” he averred.

He added that all butchers and food vendors should be fully kitted and maintain a high level of personal hygiene by regular washing of hands and tools adding that a member of the management of each concessionaire who is fully kitted and stationed at an entrance, should also ensure the use of handheld thermometer on individuals coming into the abattoir and the mandatory use of hand sanitizers.

The Commissioner stressed that the need for crowd control during the slaughtering process where a maximum of four persons per cow should be adhered to on the slab.

Lawal reiterated that the State Government would not condone any illegal conveyance of meat and meat products from any of the abattoir and slaughter houses to the markets adding that the use of Eko refrigerated meat van is the only recognized means of meat and meat products.

He noted that butchers should discourage their customers from touching meat or meat products but rather customers are to point at whatever they want and butchers with gloved hands should sell the meat.

“The Era of several customers touching meat or meat products on display is over as the Lagos meat reforms is poised to ensure only wholesome meat is sold to the populace and also promote food safety,” the Commissioner said.

COVID-19: All lawmakers must undergo compulsory test if we must shutdown – Rep

A top ranking member of the House of Representatives on Tuesday suggested that all lawmakers must undergo a compulsory test on Covid-19 before the National Assembly is shutdown.

The lawmaker, who spoke under the condition of anonymity with TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), also revealed that 15 members of the 360 House membership just arrived from foreign trips.

He said, “15 members just arrived from different parts of the globe and even mingled with some of us at plenary and committee legislative business sessions.

“So if we must shut down this complex then to further save the situation let us all sit in our various offices and undergo the test. So many of our members who just arrived mingled with us and some even shook hands with presiding officers at the aisle”.

Recall that as at Monday, some committees could not hold scheduled investigative hearings over fear of Covid-19.

The committee on Insurance and Actuarial Services had to indefinitely postpone a scheduled hearing on alleged unpaid claim of N163m to Scratch ‘n’ Pay Ltd.

  • COVID-19 myths busted! Why is Coronavirus infecting govt. top officials, celebrities?

COVID-19 myths busted! Why is Coronavirus infecting govt. top officials, celebrities?

As the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic situation continues to evolve across the globe, certain myths continue to spread along with it.

Dr. Faheem Younus, an award-winning clinician and physician executive who is leading the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health’s quality and safety program, busted these nineteen COVID-19 myths.

    1/19: Avoid shipped packages/gas pumps/shopping carts/ATMs or you’ll die.

    Wrong.

Coronavirus surface survival is one thing; that surface causing an infection is another. Wash your hands; live your life

2/19: You can catch COVID-19 from ordering takeout food/Chinese food (or the packaging of food).

    Wrong.

COVID-19 is a droplet related infection (like flu) not a food-borne infection (like salmonella etc.). There is no documented COVID risk with take-out food.

3/19: Going into a sauna for 20 min can kill more than 90% of viruses, including coronavirus.

    Wrong.

There are no scientific trials to suggest the validity of this claim. On the contrary, saunas can cause pneumonias, folliculitis, etc. Read below:

4/19: If you lose your sense of smell, you have COVID-19.

    FALSE.

It’s common to temporarily lose one’s sense of smell with many viral infections/allergies. It’s a non-specific symptom that may or may not happen with COVID-19.

5/19: Taking hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin preemptively is a good idea to prevent COVID-19.

    Wrong.

These (experimental) drugs for coronavirus should only be used in selected COVID patients. They can sometimes cause fatal heart rhythm problems plus other side effects.

6/19: I receive messages that using garlic/lemon with hot water/onion in the room will prevent or cure COVID-19. Is it true?

No, it’s just made up stuff.

None of these substances have been scientifically tested against COVID-19. Don’t share such posts; they create confusion.

7/19: Our governor has declared a state of emergency. It must mean that we are all dying…

    Wrong.

The state of emergency is more of a legal than a medical standard. It allows governments to access more resources (like federal funds) and personnel (like the national guards).

8/19: Always change your clothes/shower after coming home. Or you will bring coronavirus to your family.

    Wrong.

Cleanliness is a virtue; paranoia isn’t. Let’s not scare people. Our biggest return on investment is in handwashing, staying 6 feet away, avoiding large crowds, etc.

9/19: But the messages I receive are from doctors in China/Italy. Why shouldn’t I believe them?

    False.

Real doctors publish their research in scientific journals, not on social media. Lots of good research is already published. Let’s not fuel misinformation.

10/19: Is Ibuprofen bad for COVID-19. Should I use Tylenol instead?

No. This is false. There are no studies proving this reckless opinion.

11/19: Can Coronavirus mutate and become airborne?

No. Even when viruses mutate, their mode of transmission does not change. Influenza virus has mutated many times, but it remains a droplet infection.

12/19: Can my pet catch COVID-19? Can I catch COVID-19 from my pet?

Extremely unlikely. CDC hasn’t received any reports of pets becoming sick with coronavirus. But good hand hygiene and common sense must prevail.

13/19: My coworker’s dad developed COVID-19. Am I at risk?

No. If you’re exposed to someone who was exposed to someone with COVID-19, you’re fine. CDC recommends no testing on family members of those who were exposed to a COVID-19 patient

    14/19: Does garlic cure COVID-19? Bananas? Vitamin-C?

Bananas are a fine fruit and garlic is a fine vegetable. But no. There are no clinical trials to suggest they have anti-coronavirus activity. Vitamin-C Is not even a fruit or a vegetable!

15/19: I’m tired of staying home. Is it risky to go out for a run?

Go. Run. Jog. Laugh. Just don’t do it with loads of people. Our air isn’t contaminated with coronavirus.

16/19: I just developed a sore throat and a runny nose. Is it COVID-19? Should I go to the hospital?

Don’t know. But chances are you may have a seasonal virus (Flu, RSV, Rhinovirus, etc.). Stay home. Hospitals won’t do a test and you’ll likely wait in the ED for hours.

17/19: I’ve heard that coronavirus thrives in cold sinuses. So if you blow-dry your nose with warm air, it kills the virus. True?

False! Please don’t. Our nose carries bacteria, as part of normal flora. Those bacteria may get confused:)

18/19: Do you develop immunity after getting COVID-19?

We will know for sure in 2021. But if you put a gun next to my head and forced me to make a choice, I’d say YES. It’s very likely that infected people will develop immunity. Not sure how long will the immunity last for…

19/19: Why is the virus infecting govt. officials, celebrities?

Because COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate. Coronavirus doesn’t ask if you’re white or black, rich or poor. It only asks: Are you human?

That’s why – while honestly acknowledging our differences – we must unite. Band together, people. Let’s follow the scientific evidence and win this war against coronavirus.

See you on the other side of this pandemic!

  • Makinde prohibits gathering of more than 30 persons over COVID-19

Makinde prohibits gathering of more than 30 persons over COVID-19

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has declared the ban on social gatherings including religious services, weddings, parties, and burial ceremonies, saying such gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less.

He also directed nightclubs to remain closed. He said the new measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

The Governor made the announcements during a late Monday night broadcast at the state owned broadcasting outfit, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), a repeat of which was done on Tuesday morning.

Makinde said, he understands how this pandemic will affect the people socially, economically and spiritually, but that the measures are the sacrifices that must be made to preserve and protect the people.

He also gave the efforts made so far in combating the pandemic while reassuring the people of the efforts been made to contain the spread.

Makinde said in the broadcast, “My dear good people of Oyo State, on Saturday, 21st March 2020, the first case of the novel Coronavirus Disease was confirmed in Oyo State.

“This new development calls for stepping up even further, the measures that our administration is taking to prevent, contain and control the spread of this illness.

“This is the time to come together as a people to fight a common enemy, COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus.

“Since the identification of the Ekiti case on the 18th of March, 2020, the Oyo State Government has ramped up its preparedness for any possible outbreak of the pandemic. We set up a COVID-19 Task Force which I am heading. We have activated the Disease Surveillance and Notification System Officers in the 33 Local Government Areas and the 35 Local Council Development Areas.

“We are collaborating with the College of Medicine to set up two Diagnostic Centres at the University College Hospital, Ibadan which will begin operations by the end of the week. Both are awaiting the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control’s validation. We are also awaiting reagents for testing which have been ordered.

“We have also set up an additional isolation centre by redesignating the Maternal and Health Centre at Olodo as the Oyo State Infectious Disease Centre with a capacity for over 100 cases. Rehabilitation of the isolation centre is ongoing.

“As a result of the newly designated isolation centre at Olodo, we have now reduced the previous five isolation centres to three. They are:

“Ten-bed isolation centre at Jericho Chest Hospital, Ibadan

“Four-bed isolation centre at University College Hospital, Ibadan

“Four-bed isolation centre at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso

“We have purchased and are presently refitting two dedicated ambulances for conveying critical cases to the isolation centres, while emergency personal protective gears have been provided for health workers with more already ordered.

“Also, the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been set up and is now operational with an Incidence Manager, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo of the Ministry of Health. In addition, a five-member committee of experts has been approved to act as sub-committee for the EOC. We have provided numbers to call in case of emergencies.

“I have already directed that all public and private schools in Oyo State should be closed until after Easter. The ongoing workers’ verification exercise has been suspended. The Free Health Mission has also been suspended.

“All returning expatriate staffers in the state are presently in isolation and are being monitored.

“However, with the confirmation of the first case and a clear understanding of how this disease can be transmitted, it cannot remain business as usual. We have postponed the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Summit, indefinitely. We have also postponed the Agribusiness Summit, indefinitely.

“Therefore, I am obligated to place a ban on gatherings such as religious services, weddings, parties, burial ceremonies and so on, gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less. Nightclubs will have to remain closed. These measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

“I want to make it clear that I understand how this pandemic will affect us socially, economically and spiritually, but these are the sacrifices we need to make to preserve and protect our loved ones.

“Remember, some people among us can be asymptomatic. They can be carriers of the virus without showing any physical symptoms. This is why proper hygienic practices, social distancing and staying at home are very important.

“In times of anxiety, people want to come together physically and draw strength from the presence of others, but the advice on how to contain this virus is that we should do the exact opposite.

“This disease, this virus is disrupting our lives in ways that we never imagined any disease would. But we can conquer it. We have seen the number of new cases drop in other places around the world and we have to copy all they did, as far as our local circumstances can permit, to keep the numbers here in manageable proportions.

“Again, I enjoin everyone to work with us and do everything in their power to practice social distancing. With commitment and the grace of God we shall conquer this.”

Delta PDP bows to pressure, postpones congress indefinitely

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has postponed indefinitely it’s congress earlier scheduled for today, after mounting pressure for the rescheduling over the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to a statement signed by Barr Kingsley Esiso, State Chairman of the party, the postponement is to avoid the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus by respecting the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO) as regards social distancing, even when there is no reported case in Delta state as of today.

Earlier, a statement by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity Secretary of the party, has it that the party had adopted further safety measures in the face of the pandemic by suspending political activities.

“Sequel to the earlier decision of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to shutdown activities at our secretariats and offices across the country, the party has further resolved to suspend all activities bordering on congresses, rallies and other large gathering of members of our party across the federation, with effect from Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

“This decision has become imperative in respect to the need for continuous social distancing and other health safety measures against the spread of COVID-19 in our country.

“The PDP enjoins the Federal Government to continue to review situations as they concern the fight against the spread of COVID-19 and take measures, even if stringent, to safeguard lives,” the statement read.

Similarly, in line with measures being taken to safeguard the nation from the spread of COVID-19, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP directed a partial shutdown and skeletal activities at its National Secretariat, Abuja from Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

“The NWC also directed all PDP secretariats and offices across the country to comply with this directive accordingly. The PDP is already adopting pre-emptive health safety measures that will safeguard lives in all our offices nationwide.

“The PDP enjoins Nigerians to comply with all directives by relevant agencies of government and the World Health Organization (WHO) with regard to keeping safe from the pandemic. Oyedepo apologises to Ogun Govt after defying ‘Coronavirus’ order

The Bishop and Founder of Winner Chapel, better known as Living Faith Church, has tendered his sincere apology to Ogun state government for defying the order that was given to curb the spread of Coronavirus that has hit the world.

On Thursday the state government had banned any gathering that is more than 50persons which includes:Jumat services by Muslims, Church services, party, club and so on. But Winners chapel defied the order [Read more here].

The apology letter read:”Coronavirus: Compliance with Government Order – Matters Arising.

“It has become necessary to issue this statement to clarify issues surrounding why Faith Tabernacle, the International Headquarters of Living Faith Church, Ota, in Ogun State, held its regular church service today, although with less than half of her regular worshippers.

There has been diverse responses varying from well-meaning concerns to uncharitable insinuations, misinterpretations, and unfounded allegations that the service was held in deliberate defiance of Ogun State Government ban on high-density gatherings, in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. Nothing can be further from the truth.

For avoidance of doubt, as stakeholders and as a responsible organisation, Living Faith Church fully supports and encourages compliance with all initiatives of the government to combat the spread of this dreaded virus. However, information has to be strategically disseminated to the grassroot, noting that the Church is a family and not an industry, it is for this reason that enlightenment and sensitization from the Church platform is a most effective way to get people involved in playing their part in terms of prayers and intercessions and not just staying away from Church without knowing what to do.

Invariably, a press release from the office of the CAN President, through his Special Assistant on media on Saturday March 21, 2020, expressed the same position that members who may gather in church premises, many of whom may not be aware of this regulations should be allowed to worship for the purpose of enlightenment on the subject matter.

As we all know, the Church is made up of both literate and illiterate congregants; many are not in touch with any of the modern platforms of communication and this is what we did yesterday. Indeed, the service was devoted entirely to sensitizing and mobilizing members of the Church regarding the danger of this deadly virus and the need to comply with government directives.

The Bishop has since engaged Ogun State Government at the highest level to clarify this issue and any misgivings and reiterated the full support of the church for the State Government’s efforts to ensure public safety, towards curtailing the spread of this deadly virus. He appreciates the opportunity of direct engagement and the understanding of the government. Cooperation to safeguard public safety is not just a moral obligation or civic responsibility; the church also considers it a spiritual duty.

For instance, to show how law abiding our organisation is and in compliance with government directives, all our primary and secondary schools across the nation have been directed to close down. Also, our students at Landmark University, Omuaran, Kwara state were sent back home, while Covenant University Students, who are currently on vacation were instructed to stay back at home while awaiting further directives from government.

As a responsible and law abiding organization we wish to state that will ensure compliance with the government directives in all our churches across the state .

The Church shall continue to engage all necessary logistics to ensure compliance with government directives and continue to pray for speedy divine intervention to stem this deadly virus.

COVID-19: We cannot let cure be worse than problem itself- Trump

By Dayo Benson Editor Politics,Law/Human Rights New York

As United States grapples with Coronavirus Pandemic, President Donald Trump, Monday evening, assured Americans that his administration would not allow cure for the ravaging disease to be worse than the problem itself, even as he reminded all that current situation called for sacrifice.

The President stated this at the daily briefing at the White House. He however hinted that America would soon be opened for business again, after the situation was reviewed in 15 days, saying that the country was not created to be shut down.

Trump’s assurance came as major States across the country were on pause, following lockdown imposed to stem further spread of the virus.

“America will again and soon be open for business. Very soon, a lot sooner than three or four months that somebody was suggesting. A lot sooner. We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself”, Trump said.

Monday’s briefing also coincided with deployment of National Guard to assist in the distribution of medical supplies to needy states.

Speaking in a measured tone laced with confidence, the President told journalists that the country had taken delivery of millions of medical supplies which were already being distributed across the states in urgent need.

Trump charged the Republicans and Democrats to put politics aside and come together to defeat the common enemy, even as he praised Governor Andrew Cuomo’s efforts in New York, the pandemic epicenter.

He appealed to Americans to come together and fight the invisible enemy, even as he warned against hoarding personal protective equipments needed by medical personnel.

The President revealed that he had signed an Executive Order which criminalizes hoarding of such equipments, saying that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has been mandated to enforce the Order.

Attorney General Bill Barr, spoke after President Trump. He stated that Section 102 of the Defence Production Act, prohibits profiting from such medical items.

Barr explained that an individual could have more than enough toilet paper at home, he added that law enforcement agents would knock on the door of anyone who stockpiled masks in a warehouse.

Earlier, former Vice President Joe Biden, had criticized Trump’s handling of COVID-19 crisis, in streamed address from his house in Delaware.

The Democratic Presidential Nominee front runner, had been invisible since Coronavirus compelled the party to reschedule its primaries. He challenged Trump to act as “war time President” he called himself.

COVID-19 patient claims hydroxychloroquine saved his life

A 52 years old Florida man, Rio Giardinieri, who was down with the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), is claiming that yet to be approved antimalarial drug, hydroxychloroquine saved his life.

Giardinieri was diagnosed of COVID-19 and pneumonia at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in South Florida, and was put on oxygen in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.

He showed symptoms of horrendous back pain, headaches, cough and fatigue for five days after catching the disease, possibly at a conference in New York.

The Florida man, who is waiting to be discharged from hospital, said doctors told him there was nothing more they could do after more than one week of battling for life.

Giardinieri said goodbye to his wife and three children on Friday evening, he told Los Angeles’ Fox 11.

“I was at the point where I was barely able to speak and breathing was very challenging. I really thought my end was there,” he said.

Giardinieri narrated that in his travail, a friend sent him a message about hydroxychloroquine, and he contacted an infectious disease doctor about the drug.

“He gave me all the reasons why I would probably not want to try it because there are no trials, there’s no testing, it was not something that was approved.

“And I said, ‘Look, I don’t know if I’m going to make it until the morning,’ because at that point I really thought I was coming to the end because I couldn’t breathe anymore. He agreed and authorized the use of it and 30 minutes later the nurse gave it to me,” Giardinieri said.

After about an hour on an IV with the medicine, Giardinieri said, it felt like his heart was beating out of his chest and, about two hours later, he had another episode where he couldn’t breathe.

He said he was given Benadryl and some other drugs and that when he woke up around 4:45 a.m., it was “like nothing ever happened.”

He’s since had no fever or pain and can breathe again. Giardinieri said doctors believe the episodes he experienced were not a reaction to the medicine but his body fighting off the virus.

Giardinieri, the vice president of a company that manufactures cooking equipment for high-end restaurants in Los Angeles, said he had three doses of the medicine Saturday and is hoping to be discharged from the hospital in five days.

“To me, there was no doubt in mind that I wouldn’t make it until morning. So to me, the drug saved my life,” ,” Giardinieri said.
