COVID-19: U.S. President, Biden continues to test positive (VIDEO)

The 46th President of the United State, Joe Biden, 79, is in isolation and has experienced no renaissance of symptoms in his rebound COVID-19 case, says the White House.

Biden initially tested positive for COVID-19 on July 21.

He continued to test positive for COVID-19 Tuesday but is feeling “well,” according to a memo from Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s physician.

“The President continues to feel well, though he is experiencing a bit of a return of a loose cough. He remains fever-free and in good spirits. His temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation remain entirely normal. His lungs are clear,” O’Connor wrote.

O’Connor added that Biden “will continue his strict isolation measures” and “will continue to conduct the business of the American people from the Executive Residence.”

Biden tested negative for COVID twice last week, but tested positive again on Saturday in what O’Connor described as a ‘rebound’ case seen in a small percentage of patients who take the antiviral drug Paxlovid.

It scuppered the president’s plans for a weekend back in Delaware; but he was able to make a video appearance on Monday, announcing that the U.S. had killed Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri at the weekend.

In his letter, O’Connor said the president would continue his strict isolation.

The letter reads: “He will continue to conduct the business of the American people from the executive residence. As I have stated previously, the president continues to be very specifically conscientious to protect any of the executive residences, White House, Secret Service and other staff whose duties require any (albeit socially distanced) proximity to him.”

A day earlier, the White House said the president continues to have mild ‘lingering symptoms.’

His symptoms at the time were said to have included a runny nose, cough, sore throat, a slight fever and body aches.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that Biden was treated with Paxlovid and tested negative last Wednesday before emerging from isolation.

High-risk patients still face drastically diminished risks of hospitalization after taking Paxlovid.

O’Connor’s memo Tuesday marked the first time he noted a reemergence of symptoms from the rebound case.

Biden had six close contacts before testing positive for COVID for a second time, though White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday none has tested positive.

It remains unclear for how long Biden will be able to leave the White House for a number of planned trips.

Jean-Pierre noted Monday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not yet released any guidance regarding travel after a rebound infection.

According to the Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre,  “No reoccurring symptoms – meaning like, if you look at [O’Connor’s] original letter, there’s nothing. There’s nothing severe right? Because he feels fine. He feels he feels good.

    Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre

“But as we know, all of us have had COVID, we do have a little bit of a lingering cough, a little bit of maybe a lingering sniffle. That’s not uncommon to happen, so that’s what we are talking about,’ she said, without specifying the exact nature of the president’s ailments.”

BREAKING: U.S. President Biden tests positive for COVID-19 again

President of the United States of America, Joe Biden has tested positive again for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the White House has said.

His physician said he’s not experiencing any symptoms, but that he will isolate at the White House.

Earlier last week, Biden tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, despite being “fully vaccinated and twice boosted” with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the 79-year-old president is experiencing “very mild symptoms.”

Biden has begun taking Pfizer’s Paxlovid, an antiviral pill that can reduce the risk of hospitalisation for people who test positive for the virus, the press secretary said.

  • IMF retains projected economic growth of 3.4% for Nigeria

IMF retains projected economic growth of 3.4% for Nigeria

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has retained projected economic growth of 3.4% for Nigeria in 2022, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports.

The Washington-based institution disclosed this in its World Economic Outlook (WEO) for July 2022, dubbed “gloomy and more uncertain”.

The IMF lowered its global growth forecast and raised its inflation outlook due to recent blows to the pandemic-weakened world economy.

In its updated forecast on Tuesday, the IMF expects global growth of 3.2 per cent this year, 0.4 percentage points less than what was projected in April.

For the eurozone, the IMF expects growth to be 0.2 percentage points lower than April forecast, at 2.6 per cent.

This year, the IMF expects an inflation rate of 6.6 per cent in the industrialised countries and 9.5 per cent in emerging markets, upward revisions of 0.9 and 0.8 percentage points, respectively.

The IMF said the new assessments are due to “higher-than-expected inflation worldwide especially in the United States and major European economies’’.

This it said, triggering tighter financial conditions; a worse-than-anticipated slowdown in China, reflecting COVID-19 outbreaks and lockdowns; and further negative spillovers from the war in Ukraine.’’

It warned that, with increasing prices continuing to squeeze living standards worldwide, taming inflation should be the first priority for policymakers.

“Tighter monetary policy will inevitably have real economic costs, but delay will only exacerbate them,’’ it said.

In the United States, the economy growth was revised down to 2.3 per cent amid reduced household purchasing power and the central bank’s moves to hike interest rates.

In China, COVID-19 outbreaks and lockdowns, as well as a further escalation of the property sector crisis, could further suppress growth, which was revised down by 1.1 percentage points to 3.3 per cent

Meanwhile, China’s slowdown would have major global consequences, it warned.

However, the IMF added that policies to address specific impacts on energy and food prices “should focus on those most affected without distorting prices.’’

It also called on nations to raise COVID-19 vaccination rates in view of future new variants.

According to the report, mitigating climate change continues to require “urgent multilateral action to limit emissions and raise investments to hasten the green transition,’’.

Biden tested positive on Thursday and was said to have experienced “very mild symptoms’’.

He went into isolation and was given a five-day course of Paxlovid, a Coronavirus treatment medication.

“His symptoms have been steadily improving, and are almost completely resolved,’’ O’Connor wrote.

  • Social change does not descend from Heaven – By Owei Lakemfa

Social change does not descend from Heaven – By Owei Lakemfa

Social change does not descend from Heaven. That was the basic message at an international conference on the “Challenge of Building an Alternative Political and Socio-Economic System”. Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Clara  Margarita Pulido Escandell, gave the Opening Address at the July 16, 2022  virtual conference  to mark  the 17th Anniversary of the Nigeria-based Amilcar Cabral Ideological School- Movement, ACIS-M.

Leading speakers from eight Latin American, North American  and African countries, she submitted that the solution to biting world  crises is the solidarity of the human race.  Cuba at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when other countries shut their borders, had sent out over 3,000 doctors, nurses and other health personnel to 28 countries to combat the pandemic.  She said human beings need solidarity even if it comes at an high cost, adding that solidarity is what  Cubans have: “In our gene, our blood and our hearts.”

Speaking of the pandemic for which the small island had produced five vaccine candidates with at least two in use, she said Cuba had vaccinated over 90 per cent of its entire population, including children. She described the current situation in Cuba as good because of the strive to improve life, including proposed new laws to expand family rights, and bad due to the effects of COVID-19 and a six-decade United States, US, blockade of the island country, a situation made worse by the piling of  240 extra sanctions on the country. In summarising her presentation, Ambassador Pulido said US propaganda trying to portray Cuba as a failed state is false, adding:  “In Cuba, we have peace and the government is led by the population. Yes, it is the people leading the government.”

His Excellency David Vasquez Caraballo, the Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, submitted that there is the need to build a new international system in which countries would have the right to independence and sovereignty. He said there is a rearrangement of such political relations in Latin America which has swept through countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia. On the realities in Venezuela, he said part of its problems was the Executive Order signed by then American President Barack Obama which designated Venezuela as constituting an immediate and real threat to the US. Venezuela, he said, has been a victim of sweeping American sanctions, experienced mercenary terror and attacks on its power system but that the unity and commitment of the people led to it overcoming these hostile actions to the extent that in 2021, it actually experienced good growth.

Comrade Imani Moja, representing the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, PAIGC, after whose founding leader, Amilcar Cabra, the ACIS is named, said people must recognise that the world is a global village, as fires in one part can spread to another.  He said there are troops from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS,  in Guinea-Bissau but that they are primarily there to  impose an undemocratic President on the country. He said coups have been used against the PAIGC which was the ruling party in the country and that just on May 16, 2022, President Umaro Embalo, now the Chairman of ECOWAS, sacked the National Assembly to keep the PAIGC which controls it, out of power.

The media, he said, has also not been spared. He cited the case of Radio Capital which he said was attacked in broad daylight. He also lamented that Africa does not have its own independent sources of information forcing the continent to rely on the European and American news networks. Imani argued that just as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, is co-ordinating  the military forces in Europe, so does Africa need a similar co-ordinating force. Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the Convener of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, argued that the world is being recalibrated, saying the  world we knew yesterday is not the world we know today and certainly would not be the world we will know tomorrow. He regretted that Ghana has become an American military satellite.

Pratt said the Akufo government has also completely subjected the country to the dictates of  the Western-controlled International Monetary Fund, IMF, and the World Bank regretting that the country now uses 128 per cent of its total revenue just to service debts. The country, he said, had been to these institutions 18 times with the same results of mass impoverishment. He cited the 1982/83 imposition of punishing IMF policies on Ghana which resulted in mass sack, privatisation of public corporations and a crumbling economy. Such policies, he said, did not work in Ghana and would not work in any African country.

Pratt lamented that despite Ghana being the sixth largest producer of gold in the world, it remains very poor and, in fact, depends on foreign countries for its food needs. He said the time has come for African countries to transform their colonial economies into independent economies.

Lefika Chetty of South Africa said the country is caught in “the crisis before crisis”, trapping it in stagnation partly as a result of state capture and corruption. The result, she said, is mass unemployment, high level of violence and xenophobic tendencies. The solution, Lefika  said, is to create a peaceful, democratic system based on the needs of the people and the principles of social development  rather than on profit, private gains and inequality. She noted that global capitalism, which is based on accumulation, has pushed humanity into catastrophic climate change that may make parts of the world unhabitable.

Comrade Fatai of the All African Peoples Revolutionary Party of the US said the colonial masters in Africa demonised socialism which is a viable alternative to crippling capitalism, adding that the party’s objective is to unite all of Africa along Pan-Africanist lines. Ambassador Brahim Buseif of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, SADR, also known as Western Sahara, in his solidarity message, thanked ACIS-M for being one of the founders and pillars of the Nigeria Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara.

Dr. Dipo Fashina, philosopher and former National President of Nigerian university academics, said what is crucial in liberating the continent is to tackle the ideological roots of liberalism and neoliberalism so as to arm the African continent with the necessary tools for liberation. Comrade Abiodun Aremu, the ACIS-M leader,  said: “ We desire a society that should displace the present unjust order, where the few super-rich reigns in looted wealth, while the majority wallow in sub-human conditions.”

Citing the examples of Cuba and Venezuela, he added: “Our common realities should be our uniting factors in Africa to  struggle and recover our sovereignties that the various rulers in  Africa have surrendered to the US and Eurocentric neo-colonial domination.”

  • Buhari proffers ways to tame corruption in Africa

Buhari proffers ways to tame corruption in Africa

President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the African Ant-Corruption Champion, has called for the establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Court to try offenders.

He also urged African leaders to intensify the fight against corruption, and create more disincentives for pilfering of public funds.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s media aide, in a statement on Thursday night in Abuja, said Buhari was speaking in his recorded remark to celebrate the African Day of Anti-Corruption.

The president praised African leaders for gains so far recorded, admonishing that efforts must be intensified to prosecute offenders and collect resources that had been stored in other countries.

“Distinguished participants and fellow African leaders, corruption is evil and all efforts at tackling it are desirable. I have monitored the fight against corruption in Africa and I can see both successes and drawbacks.

”The battle must continue for the sake of the continent and its people no matter the difficulties.

“In Nigeria, the fight against corruption has been vigorous since 2015. A lot has been achieved in the areas of arrest, prosecution, conviction, asset recovery and anti-corruption laws.

“I must admit that the fight has not been a bed of roses. Truly, a lot of more work on many fronts is required.

”For example, civil and public servants must be ethical and professional at all times. The private sector must contribute in curbing corruption. The international community needs to close safe havens.

”The judiciary requires more impetus. Perhaps, an International Anti-corruption Criminal Court is needed,” he said.

President Buhari said family and religious values would have to be upgraded, and schools have a lot of work to do for a better society.

“I am extremely delighted to address the participants as we celebrate the Africa Day of Anti-Corruption. Distinguished participants, we have come a long way in the fight against corruption in Nigeria and Africa in general.

“May I use this opportunity to appreciate fellow African leaders for their individual and collective efforts in fighting corruption on our continent. I appreciate all of you for the confidence reposed in me being the Africa Champion on Anti-Corruption.

“I understand that the theme for 2022 is ‘Strategy and Mechanisms for the Transparent Management of Covid-19 Funds, Lessons from the Pandemic.’

In Nigeria, we responded to the Covid-19 Pandemic swiftly and having tamed it, we have realized the need for more awareness campaigns on health issues and more investment in the health sector.

”Again, service delivery requires checkmating corruption,” he added.

According to him, African leaders must get rid of corruption in Africa if the continent is to realize its full potentials.

“I have come to realize that nations in Africa have to ensure that national resources are not taken to safe havens around the world and we must curtail Illicit Financial Flows in all its ramifications.

”Also, we must work collectively to recover all resources taken abroad. We must show looters that crime does not pay by depriving them of the proceeds of their crime.

”Also, elite greed and irresponsibility must be eradicated in Africa. Again, ethics, decency, decorum and respect for rule of law must be promoted in Africa.

”It is important to develop strategies for behavioral change in Africa if corruption is to be tamed. This will ensure that national resources are allowed to serve the population and not a tiny few,” he added.

He also said anti-corruption agencies must be empowered and allowed to deliver on their mandates.

“In Nigeria, I am very proud of our Anti-Corruption Agencies, our law enforcement agencies and our regulatory bodies for their efforts at checking criminality including corruption.

”I very deeply appreciate them for their sacrifices,” the President said.

Buhari noted that the fight against corruption must be sustained for the benefit of present and future generations.

“Our youths have no place to go and live with dignity but in Africa. As I am leaving office next year, I am proud to leave behind a legacy of fighting corruption among others.

“Personally, I abhor corruption and I will render my best in or out office to get rid of corruption in Nigeria and Africa in general.

”I urge our youths to join me in this noble cause,” he said.

He urged African leaders to work together at whatever level to get rid of corruption in Africa, adding “posterity will judge us right if we deal with corruption as appropriate.”

The president said it was imperative to kill corruption in Nigeria and Africa.

“It will give our citizens a better life,” he said.

  • I don’t have any assets for my children to inherit – Buhari

I don’t have any assets for my children to inherit – Buhari

…their net worth is in their heads

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he is not leaving any assets for his children to inherit.

Going memory lane, Buhari said that after his release from jail in December 1988, he told his children that their net worth is what is in the head, not what one has acquired in life.

The President, who spoke in Daura, Katsina State, on Wednesday, implored parents to inculcate the right values in children, including deep fear of God, respect for constituted authorities and living a purposeful life through continuous education.

“I was locked up for more than three years, after leading the country. At that point, I realised and I told my children that your net worth is what is in your head, not what you have acquired in life.

“My focus has always been on training the children to be relevant wherever they find themselves. I told my children, particularly the girls, that they can only get married after getting a first degree.

“They already know that I am not leaving anything for anyone to inherit. My greatest legacy to the children is to ensure they are properly educated,” he said.

The President noted that the younger children should be guided and taught history, as they would find it hard to be patriotic, responsible and respectful, without a thorough understanding of their backgrounds.

His words: “Whoever does not have a good sense of history will easily make mistakes.

“We should ensure the children get proper education. The knowledge they acquire should not be towards getting government jobs. We don’t have jobs in government anymore. With technology, governments are becoming more smaller, nimble and efficient.

“Emphasis should now be on skills acquisition and competence in creation and deployment of technology. During the COVID-19, we asked all level 12 downward to stay at home, and surprisingly the systems worked effectively”.

Buhari therefore charged the youth to seek education, not for government jobs which are unavailable but to arm themselves with skill and ability to fight poverty and to meet the needs of the 21st Century.

The President, who was at the Palace of the Emir of Daura for the Sallah homage, said more time should be given to the coaching of the future leaders, with basic knowledge of moral values, as the fast changing world, driven by new technology, would be more competitive and demanding.

Buhari also told the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, that he will be more regular in visits, preparatory to the handing over in May 2023, adding that the prolonged absence was due to the demands of his office.

“This is the longest I have been away from home. In fact, the Emir took to the court of public opinion at the prayer ground, when he openly told everyone that I had not visited Daura for close to a year,” he added.

The President said all Nigerians must make sacrifices to move the country forward, especially the public servants, calling for more selflessness and inclusion.

“At the end, it is only God that can reward your efforts, not man,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Aminu Bello Masari listed the achievements of the President to include social security, which was created to cater for the poor, and ensure that they receive some money at the end of every month.

The Emir of Daura thanked the President for the infrastructural and institutional developments in the state, saying generations will remember and remain grateful to President Buhari.
