  • Pregnant cow bags death sentence for illegal border crossing

A pregnant cow will be executed as a result of crossing from her European Union farm in Bulgaria into the non-EU Serbia.

Daily Mail reports that Penka, a pregnant red cow who is due in around three months’ time, wandered westwards away from her herd near the village of Kopilovtsi, straying over the border into non-EU Serbia.

Two weeks later, she was returned to her owner, Ivan Haralampiev, by a farmer over the frontier.

However, Bulgarian officials said the animal must be put down because of strict EU rules.

Penka will now be executed because she didn’t have the proper paperwork — despite being given a clean bill of health by Serbian vets.

“She had left the borders of the EU and cannot be imported back into the European Union,” Haralampiev told public BNT Television Thursday as he pleaded for his cow to be saved.

“A vet comes and orders it to be immediately culled!”

The farmer also lamented how the cow was able to saunter over the border unchecked in the first place. “How come nobody attempted to stop it?” he said.

Although Serbian vets have written a statement saying Penka was in a perfect condition and fit to return home, Bulgarian authorities said she should be put down without delay.

Officials said it was not in their powers to save Penka from the EU regulations.

  • Police kill man over missing cow in Cross River

There was tension in Itigidi, headquarters of Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, following the alleged murder of a community leader and mortician, Mr. Isong Nkanu aka Isong No Joke, by the Police.

The incident was triggered after some village chiefs and the youth leader were invited by the Police and later detained over an issue that started sometime in October 2017, when some herdsmen allegedly reported that one of their cows was killed by unknown persons in the community.

It was gathered that their detention irked the community youths, who went on protest during which one of them was shot dead by the Police.

A community leader, who pleaded anonymity, said that they thought the matter had been taken care of, but were surprised that the Itigidi Police Division invited their chiefs, including the youth leader.

The source said: “When the chiefs and our youth leader were invited, they honoured the invitation as law-abiding citizens, but were detained and this infuriated the entire community, which led to a protest.

“The youths went on a protest without any weapon or arms; they went to register their grievances over the arrests. “It shows they have respect for authority and law; it was during the demonstration that Isong, one of the community leaders, was shot dead by Police.”

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo, said some herdsmen had complained some months ago that indigenes of the Itigidi community killed their cows. Her words: “The youths got wrong information; they thought the Police at Ugep had taken their chief and youth leader to Calabar, not knowing they were only invited for a peace talk and for the matter to be resolved amicably.

“On that strength, we invited the community leader to make peace. Unfortunately, the youths in the community read a different meaning to the invitation of their community leaders. “They became restive and threatened to burn down Itigidi Police Station. There was intervention by the Police and, in the process, one person died.”

  • Akwa Ibom governor disowns aide over Buhari’s cow comment

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has disassociated himself from his aide who said that President Muhammadu Buhari cared more about his cows than Nigerians who are suffering economic hardship.

The governor’s media aide, Essien Ndueso, Thursday, posted on Facebook, photos of Mr. Buhari’s recent visit to his ranch in Daura, and said of the photos, “Today, we are in an administration that cows fare better than human beings.”

Mr. Ndueso mockingly added that “If the cost of grass were to increase, or if anyone were to tamper with the comfort of these cows, I am sure Baba would come back and take urgent actions.

“Today fuel is N180 and those who earn their wages monthly from worshipping Baba on Facebook are also suffering the same fate,” he said.

The comment attracted an outrage from some Nigerians, especially Mr. Buhari’s supporters.

Governor Emmanuel, who is outside the country, issued a quick rebuttal through his spokesperson, Ekerete Udo.

A government source said the governor was angry with the attack on the president, and ordered that the Government House issue a response.

“We wish to use this opportunity to state categorically that the comment expressed by Mr. Essien Ndueso does not represent in any form, shape, manner or appearance the views of the Government and the good people of Akwa Ibom State,” the governor’s spokesperson, Ekerete Udoh, said in a statement issued on Friday. “We hereby, totally and unreservedly disassociate ourselves from the referenced comment.”

The statement said Mr. Ndueso’s comment was his “personal opinion” and that it was “ill-conceived” and “obtuse”.

“The Governor and indeed the entire Government of Akwa Ibom State hold President Buhari who indeed is the Father of the Nation in the highest of esteem, and the two leaders enjoy a close and cordial relationship that goes beyond political labels and affiliations,” the statement said.

“Even though the nation is going through tough and challenging economic times, we believe and trust the resilience of Nigerians, our ingenuity, and innate capacity to reinvent the wheels, and together, in spite of our political differences, we remain inexorably tied to our common destiny which requires all hands on the deck to move our dear nation forward,” he said.
