2027: CPC bloc reiterates support for APC, Tinubu

Leaders of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) have reiterated their loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

In a press statement on Wednesday in Abuja, the leaders dismissed recent claims and media reports suggesting that they were defecting to opposition political parties.

The statement, signed by Sen. Umaru Al-Makura, Aminu Masari, Sen. Mustafa Salihu, Farouk Adamu, Almajiri Geidam, Waziri Bulama and Dr Nasiru Ladan.

It described such claims and media reports as baseless and mischievous.

Recall CPC was one of the major political parties that merged to  form the APC in February 2013 ahead of the 2015 presidential election.

The statement reiterated the commitment of the leaders to playing a responsible role in the APC’s growth and Nigeria’s progress, saying they stood firmly with the APC.

“We categorically state that we have neither left the APC nor do we intend to leave. The CPC bloc remains one of the APC’s foundational pillars.

“We are resolute in our commitment to the party and its progressive ideals. We endorse President Tinubu’s economic and governance reforms,” the statement said.

It called for patience and collective support for the administration as the benefits of its reforms unfolds.

“We fully endorse the economic and governance reforms led by Tinubu, while these policies may present challenges, they are crucial steps toward rebuilding our economy and securing a prosperous future for all Nigerians,” the statement said.

It called for enhanced engagement and communication within the APC to foster inclusiveness, reduced tensions, and promote unity, urging its leadership to increase engagement with members at all levels.

“Strengthening internal communication will foster inclusiveness, reduce tensions, and enhance support for the party’s programmes,” the statement said.

It advised members of the party with grievances to seek redress through constitutional channels within it rather than resorting to public agitation or hasty exits.

“We acknowledge that some members may feel sidelined, but such concerns are not unique to any one bloc.

“We encourage those affected to seek redress through established constitutional channels within the party,” the statement said.

Masari, Al-Makura, Adamu, others: we remain with Tinubu

Following the rumored planned defection of key members of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the members affirmed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration and its administration.

Former Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the only elected CPC governor; former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, who was House of Representatives Speaker, and Minister of Education in the Muhammadu Buhari Administration, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, signed a communiqué after a meeting of the CPC bloc, along with 20 others.

The rumour of the CPC bloc defection gained currency following the move by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a member of the CPC bloc, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) last month.

The CPC, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), a faction of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors fused to form the APC in 2014.

The then new political party galvanised the votes across the country to defeat the then-ruling PDP and its presidential candidate, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Gen. Buhari became President in 2015.

Those alleging a defection plot by the CPC stalwarts attributed the reason to the so-called neglect by President Tinubu.

Others who signed the CPC bloc communiqué are: Senator Ibrahim Musa, Senator Mustafa Salihu, Farouk Adamu Aliyu, Almajiri Geidam, Waziri Bulama, Dr. Nasiru Ladan Argungu and Dr. Dominic Alancha.

Others are Ayuba Balami, Osita Okechukwu, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Lucy Ajayi, Captain Bala Jibrin, Uche Ufearoh, Alh. Yusuf Salihu, Abubakar Maikudi, Mutallib Badmus, Alh. Muhammed Ahmed Datti, Muhammed Etsu, Chief Jerry Johnson and Alh. Alkali Ajikolo.

The statement reads: “We, the undersigned leaders and committed members of the former CPC, who were part of those instrumental in the historic merger that gave birth to the APC, hereby issue this statement to clarify our unalloyed loyalty to our great party and express firm solidarity with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“Recent misleading narratives suggesting a defection or disaffection among CPC stakeholders are false, mischievous, and should be ignored.

“We remain integral to the APC and are fully aligned with its leadership and vision.

“Our position is as follows: We stand firmly with you, the APC. We wish to state categorically that we have neither left the APC nor do we intend to leave.

“The CPC bloc remains one of the legacy foundations of the APC, and we are resolute in our commitment to the party and its progressive ideals.

“The APC is our collective project: As part of the legacy parties that formed the APC, we take pride in the sacrifices made to build a platform that promotes national unity, justice, and development.

“We will not allow some people to dismantle the party we helped to build through years of tireless work and dedication.

“We reject the politics of division and desperation: Attempts to create disunity within the party and the country do not reflect the will or position of the genuine CPC core members, and it is unacceptable.

“Support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda: We align ourselves fully with the economic and governance reforms being undertaken by President Bola Tinubu.

“Though challenging, these policies are necessary steps to rebuild our economy and secure a better future for all.

“We urge patience and collective support as the benefits unfold.

“Internal discontent must be addressed through due process: While we acknowledge that some party members may feel sidelined, we emphasise that such grievances are not exclusive to any one bloc.

“We advise those concerned to seek redress through constitutional channels within the party and not to resort to negative public agitation or hasty exits from the party.

“Our democracy and party must be strengthened, not weakened. At this critical point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, it is imperative for all APC members—especially those with deep roots in the party’s formation—to work together to preserve its legacy and help consolidate Nigeria’s democracy.

“We must avoid actions that erode our unity and the stability of the nation.

“Call for better engagement and communication: We call on the leadership of the APC to scale up engagement with members across all levels.

“Strengthening internal communication will reduce tension, foster inclusiveness, and enhance support for the party’s programs.

“Party unity must be nurtured continuously in order to sustain the gains and to secure the future.

“We therefore reaffirm our loyalty to the APC and our support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“The CPC family remains a vital pillar of the APC and will continue to play a responsible role in its growth and the progress of Nigeria.”

    ‘El-Rufai is selfish’

Corroborating the position of leaders of the CPC bloc in the APC that they remain an integral part of the ruling party, a former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Farouk Aliyu, said those spreading the rumour that the bloc will quit are mischievous.

He also described former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as a “selfish politician”.

Speaking on television last night, he said El-Rufai, who played a leading role in President Tinubu’s victory, became bitter when he could not get a ministerial slot.

Aliyu, who is a close ally of Buhari, said the CPC bloc within the APC won’t dump the party no matter what.

He said: “It is not true; there is nothing like members of the defunct CPC wanting to move out of APC.

“Our certificate, the certificate of CPC, was part of what formed APC. So, how can we leave? To go where? This is our party.”

He noted that Buhari did not endorse El-Rufai’s defection from the APC to the SDP.

Aliyu urged the APC leadership to engage all blocs within the ruling party to prevent competition and disunity before the next poll.

“Politics is about engagement. Politics is about the interests of groups, people and so on.

“That is what we are saying: engage more; not only with people from the defunct CPC, but even from the PDP, so that in 2027, there will be less competition,” he said.

We are human beings, we have our weaknesses – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged political leaders to uphold the ultimate objective of promoting interest of the country despite the challenges.

The president, who made the call when he received former State Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday, said:

“We are Nigerians, God willing we remain Nigerians, and Nigeria shall remain one.’’

Buhari said that the passion and zeal for improving the livelihood of Nigerians, which culminated in creation of the political party had not dwindled, calling for more steadfastness as Nigerians.

The president said the self-centeredness that led to the loss of about a million lives between 1967-1970 must not be allowed to repeat itself.

He maintained that the CPC was founded on the bedrock of patriotism and loyalty to the unity of Nigeria.

“Our main objective was the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are human beings.

”We have our weaknesses, but I can assure you that the patriotism in us is hard earned.

“We have gone through all the troubles from 15th of January 1966 to date. You know what I mean by this, we have killed a million of ourselves in order to keep this country together.

“I don’t think there can be any practical experience more than that. We are Nigerians, God willing we remain Nigerians and Nigeria will remain one,’’ he said.

Buhari urged all members of defunct CPC and political leaders to always be mindful of the larger picture by working towards preserving the unity, peace and integrity of the nation.

The president thanked former chairmen of the political party, which was merged to form the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), for always highlighting the achievements of the government.

He, however admitted that some areas would surely get more attention.

“I am delighted to welcome the forum of State Chairmen of the former Congress for Progressives’ Change to State House today.

“I accord great significance to this visit as it demonstrates a determination and commitment to identify with our administration.

“This visit recalls the solidarity with the successes that we have recorded in critical areas of our society.

“The visit also affords us the opportunity to discuss other issues of interest to the forum.

“I commend members of this forum and all members of the legacy party-CPC, for their continued dedication to the ideals of democratic governance that we all believed in.

“The doggedness with which we pursued our vision and goals that culminated into the success we recorded remain like bright stars in the history of our dear nation,’’ he added.

Buhari said he was particularly grateful for the “unalterable belief the members of CPC and, by extension the Nigerian electorate, had and still have in me.’’

He said this was demonstrated in their unalloyed support for the electoral struggles which reflected in the results that “we consistently recorded at the polls over the years.’’

Buhari said it was the solid credentials that the CPC possessed that gave the party a prime place in the merger that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress.

Other political parties in the merger include the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) along with some members from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Peoples Democratic Party.

The President said efforts had been made in appointing some members of CPC in his government.

According to him, such members include those in the Federal Executive Council (FEC) like the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Minister of Education, Minister of Water Resources, and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

“I listened to the remarks of your Chairman which highlighted our modest achievements in diverse areas.

“We shall remain resolute to continue to deliver on the promises we made to Nigerians, and to ensure that we attain greater milestones.

”This is in terms of economic growth, infrastructural development, provision of security, and the war against corruption, among other responsibilities of government,’’ he added.

While describing the president as the “Patriarch of the CPC’’, the Chairman of Forum and former Chairman of the party in Niger, Umar Shuaibu, said the party had maintained all its structures across the country.

He assured the president of their loyalty, especially in the forthcoming elections.

Shuaibu commended the president for providing strong leadership over the years, particularly in remaining balanced, fair and above board in electoral issues.

“Before you, the opposition was arrested and maltreated, but it is no longer so.

“You did not deny them what they denied you when they were in power,’’ he said.

Shuaibu thanked the president for appointing members of the defunct CPC into the Federal Executive Council, as heads of agencies and members of Boards.

He said the CPC had always garnered millions of votes in elections across the country, and would support the APC Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

  • TNG Analysis: Finally, APC berths in CPC with appointment of Yobe Gov as caretaker C’ttee chairman

TNG Analysis: Finally, APC berths in CPC with appointment of Yobe Gov as caretaker C’ttee chairman

Nigerians need no soothsayer to tell them that the All Progressives Congress, APC has finally berthed into the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC.

By the appointment of H.E Mai Mala Buni Governor of Yobe state as Chairman, APC is practically in the hands of the core CPC now.

One would wonder what’s the fate of Jagaban the strong man of Lagos politics now that the lingering political chess game in APC is gradually wearing its proper face.

What is going to happen to the lion of Edo politics, the all powerful former labour leader and former governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

A glance at the highlights of the emergency held by critical stakeholders of the party, the roadmap is loud and clear.

MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JUST CONCLUDED e-NEC MEETING

Caretaker Committee named; will also serve as Convention Planning Committee. Governor of Yobe, Mai Mala Buni is Chairman of the Committees. Other members include Governors of Niger and Osun.

NEC ratifies all decisions taken in respect of Edo Guber Primaries, i.e. Ize-Iyamu stands as the party’s Governorship Candidate.

    NEC has resolved the following:
    1. The withdrawal of all cases in Court.
    2. The dissolution of NWC
    3. The establishment of Caretaker/Convention Committee
    4. The ratification of the Gubernatorial Primaries in Edo State.

The party will wear a total new look once the committees complete their assignments with a script well crafted to follow to the core.

Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Adams Oshiomhole may not necessarily have any specific roles to play again.

Tinubu that held the title of national leader of the party now has no troops to control as he is now a commander without a troop.
Oshiomhole who became a gadfly after becoming APC chairman has been shown the way out of the party by his former god son Godwin Obaseki.
If he had listen to the voice of reason to consider Obaseki for a second term ticket maybe the party leadership which he thought he was part of would have re-considered his application as a cabinet member.
With this new development in APC the roadmap towards 2023 has begun and new big players will emerge.
Victor Giadom has completed phase one of the project he started.
He had the backing of the true leaders and he has delivered as promised and may just be hanging around the corner to handle a bigger project ahead.

The Rivers man held to his guns all through stamping his authority when necessary.

One really got scared on Wednesday night when he said Tinubu is not qualified to be part of today’s meeting.
True to his words, the national leader was visibly missing at the e-NEC that was attended by President Muhamnadu Buhari.

Watch out for Giadom as he is still needed to do more hatchet jobs as the APC wears a new look.

Drop calls: Senate tasks NCC, CPC, SON, on effective supervision of service providers

The Senate on Thursday advised regulatory agencies in Nigeria to ensure strict supervision of telecoms service providers for effective service delivery.
This followed the adoption of a motion by Sen. Buhari Abdulfatai (APC-Oyo) and 34 others on increasing rate of drop calls and other unwholesome practices by telecoms operators at plenary in Abuja.
The senate in its resolution expressed reservation over inefficient service delivery by GSM network providers in the country.
It urged regulatory agencies to invoke appropriate provisions of the law to protect consumers where necessary and ask for refund them for disrupted calls caused by bad network.
The Senate also urged them to carry out through investigation on causes of drop calls and come up with innovations that would help improve customers’ experience.
It also directed its committees on communications and trade, when constituted to further look into issues raised in the motion.
Speaking on the motion, Abdulfatai said Nigerians are experiencing a disturbing and yet increasing rate of dropped calls.
He said telecoms customers are encountering in-comprehensive speech and voice quality that is unclear during phone conversations.
He said subscribers do not have the power to control bundle usage, nor have choice to restrict browsing to the resources which they were allocated resulting in sudden and unexplained expiry of data bundle.
He said GSM operators in Nigeria had recently been experiencing terrible congestion on their networks, thus denying subscribers benefit of getting value for their resources.
He said in spite of warnings by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on the unpleasant activities of drop calls, meant to defraud Nigerians, no serious sanctions had been taken against any operator.
He said no effort had been made to enhance the experience of telecoms customers.
He said investigations indicate that four major operators -MTN, Airtel, Etislat and Globacom could not provide the rate of drop calls on their networks.
This, he said showed that they are not ready to compensate customers for disconnected calls.
President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan in his final submission said the 9th senate would do everything to protect Nigerians against exploitation by telecoms service providers.
He said the senate would not only bark but bite this time around.
According to him, the senate will conduct a public hearing on the matter where the regulator- NCC and the telecoms operators will be invited.

“Consumers should note that the defect discovered can lead to overheating batteries which constitutes a significant fire and burn risk,’’ he said.

The director-general said it was possible that some of the affected products were already present in the country or would be present in the near future.

He said the Council would provide relevant updates, warning, or further advisories, where applicable in the recall.

Irukera said that the CPC’s advice was pursuant to Sections 2(b) and 2(c) of the Consumer Protection Council Act (CPCA).
