  • Rooney denies former teammate, says Messi better than Ronaldo

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has declared his support for Barcelona star Lionel Messi above his ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rooney believes Messi is a cut above the “incredible” Ronaldo because the Barcelona man “will torture you before he kills you.”

Rooney and Ronaldo tormented defences during time as team-mates in an outstanding Manchester United side before the Portugal forward joined Real Madrid in 2009.

They spent a total of five seasons together at Old Trafford, a spell that yielded three Premier League titles and Champions League glory in 2007-8, a feat that sealed Ronaldo’s first Ballon d’Or.

The Derby County skipper wrote in his Sunday Times column: “Ronaldo wasn’t as focused on goals when we started playing together but you could see that all he wanted was to be the best player in the world.

“He practised and practised and began to produce. Cristiano has become an incredible scorer and he and Messi are arguably the best two players the game has seen.

“But despite my friendship with Cristiano, I’d go for Messi. It’s for the same reason I loved watching Xavi and [Paul] Scholes: it’s the different things in Messi’s game.

  • I taught Cristiano Ronaldo everything – Nani

I taught Cristiano Ronaldo everything – Nani

Nani has named former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo in his dream five-a-side team and jokingly claimed to have taught him everything.

The Portuguese winger’s selection for his fantasy squad – named on a video on the Major League Soccer Instagram account – included three players with whom he shared the Manchester United dressing room.

Nani named David de Gea in goal and Paul Scholes among his outfield picks, with fellow countrymen Deco, Bruno Alves and Ronaldo completing the line-up, SkySport reports.

On Ronaldo – who like Nani, also moved to United from Sporting Lisbon – he said, with tongue firmly in cheek: “Cristiano Ronaldo with all these skills, the fast feet, he learned a lot from me in the youth. He knows, he knows.”

Continuing the very informal theme, Nani said of his goalkeeper selection: “David de Gea is in goal, a very good player and one of the best in the world but he must bring his glasses with him because he can’t see anything without them.”

But when completing his selection, he played a somewhat straighter bat when it came to assessing the skills of the fifth member of the team.

“Paul Scholes,” he said. “great control of the ball and great vision.”

  • Asamoah Gyan snubs Messi, Cristiano, reveals greatest player

Former Ghanaian captain, Asamoah Gyan, has named former Brazil striker, Ronaldo, as the greatest player of all-time, ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gyan, who played against Ronaldo in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, in a game which ended 3-0 in favour of Brazil, said he has never seen any player like the former Real Madrid striker.

According to the former Sunderland striker, he learnt a lot of skills from Ronaldo, including finishing and dribbling.

“Ronaldo, the Brazilian, any time any day. For me, I have not seen any player like him. Although there have been a lot of players,” Gyan told Pulse Ghana.

“I don’t think I have seen any player like him because a striker who can do anything at any time, the strength, the speed, the dribbling abilities, the finishing, skills. It was amazing.

“When I was in Senior Secondary School, I learned a skill from him that I was using it to do my stuff even in the Ghana Premier League that defenders couldn’t catch me.

“I learned a lot of things from Ronaldo, tricks from him. For me, I think he is my best player of all-time.”

  • Even Cristiano Ronaldo can’t make Juventus great

So soon after equalling a Serie A goalscoring record at the weekend, Cristiano Ronaldo has been brought crashing back down to earth on a night of Champions League frustration.

The hope was when Ronaldo joined Juve in July 2018 he would be the man to help the Bianconeri finally end a wait for glory on Europe’s top stage that now stretches 24 years. It’s not going to plan.

Having scored in a record-equalling 11th consecutive league match in Saturday’s win over SPAL, the Portugal forward looked ready to head into Wednesday evening’s game away at Lyon with goals and the quarter-finals on his mind.

Lyon, only seventh in Ligue 1, had other ideas. Resolute throughout, they limited Ronaldo and his side to a grand total of zero shots on target as they wrapped up a 1-0 win.

Juventus’ number seven was not the only frustrated figure. Fans and pundits took to social media and the overall feeling is that if Ronaldo can’t drag Juve to the final, then nobody can…

  • It’s normal for Ronaldo to score – Messi

It’s normal for Ronaldo to score – Messi

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, has said he is not surprised by Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent scoring streak for Juventus in Serie A.

Ronaldo has scored in 11 straight league fixtures for the Italian champions.

The 35-year-old Portuguese now has 24 goals this campaign.

On his part, Messi has gone four matches without a goal.

The Argentine superstar has, however, netted 14 times in 19 LaLiga games so far.

“It’s normal that he continues to score, he is a predatory striker, he loves to score, any day he plays he will score,” Messi told Mundo Deportivo when asked about Ronaldo’s recent performances.

“He has many good attributes as a forward and at the minimum, he converts.”

  • UEFA lists records Ronaldo can break at 35

UEFA lists records Ronaldo can break at 35

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has listed the records Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, can break in the Champions League.

According to UEFA, Ronaldo can become the 50th player aged over 35 to score in the Champions League since the competition was introduced in 1992/1993 and also overtake the goals record of Didier Drogba (5), Laurent Blanc (4), Filippo Inzaghi (4), Ryan Giggs (3), Ulf Kirsten (4).

The European football body said this while extending birthday wishes to Ronaldo, as he turns 35 years on February 5.

In a statement on their official website, UEFA said: “Cristiano Ronaldo turns 35 today: that means a chance to break more UEFA Champions League records as one of the top 35+ scorers in the history of the competition.

“Ronaldo’s first challenge is to become the 50th player aged over 35 to score in the Champions League since the competition started in 1992/1993.

After that, the Juventus and Portugal forward can see whether he can overtake the following luminaries:
    5: Didier Drogba (Galatasaray, Chelsea)
    4: Laurent Blanc (Manchester United)
    4: Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan)
    3: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
    3: Ulf Kirsten (Bayer Leverkusen).”

  • Ronaldo fails to save Juventus, Ajax through to semi-finals

Cristiano Ronaldo played his part to send Juventus to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, but his efforts were just not enough as Ajax triumphed in Turin 2-1 and won 3-2 aggregate.

Ronaldo had opened scoring for Juventus in the 28 minute with a header inside the box, but six minutes after, Donny van de Beek, in a move disputed as an offside, scored for the visitors to level the game.

Then in the 67th minute, Matthijs de Ligt headed home the winner after a corner kick taken by Lasse Schoene. The goal made Juventus hopes to qualify more daunting as they needed two goals to level up and win.

  • UCL: Ronaldo scores as Juventus held to a draw at Ajax

UCL: Ronaldo scores as Juventus held to a draw at Ajax

Cristiano Ronaldo produced yet another quality goal to add to his collection and help Juventus to a 1-1 draw at Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday.

Juventus took the lead on the stroke of halftime as Portuguese forward Ronaldo began an attacking move inside his own half.

He then sprinted down field and diving to head in a clever chip from Joao Cancelo.

Ajax equalised 30 seconds into the second half after Cancelo lost control of the ball to allow David Neres to run down the left wing.

The Ajax player then cut inside and curl the ball past Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The result leaves the Serie A side in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals in next week’s return leg in Turin.

However, they will be mindful of Ajax’s 4-1 away win over Real Madrid in the last round that eliminated the holders 5-3 on aggregate.

Hakim Ziyech had several efforts at goal in a lively start for the youthful Dutch team, who have come through the pre-group phase qualifying round to reach the last eight.

Donny van de Beek scraped the outside of the upright with a 25th minute effort from close range after opening up space for himself in the penalty area in Ajax’s best chance of the first half.

But Juventus, with the 34-year-old Ronaldo central to their attacks, worked their way into the contest and came close themselves.

Ronaldo set up Federico Bernardeschi to turn and shoot in the 37th minute. But he was just off target.

Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick in the previous round against Atletico Madrid, then scored a 125th Champions League goal.

After equalising, Ajax then dominated possession but were guilty of over-elaborate passing and were also fortunate not to have given away a penalty.

Defender Nicolas Tagliafico was tugging on the jersey of Juventus captain Mario Mandzukic and was lucky not to be punished.

Spanish referee Carlos del Cerro Grande paused briefly in the 53rd minute to presumably hear from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) but resumed play before TV replays showed that Juventus had been denied a decent claim.

However, influential left back Tagliafico will miss the second leg next Tuesday after being booked late in the first half.

Juve hit the upright in the closing stages through substitute Douglas Costa although Ajax could have had the last say as Dusan Tadic missed a good chance in stoppage time.

More than 100 Juventus supporters were detained by Dutch police before the match while home fans were also arrested as a water cannon was used outside the ground.

  • Ronaldo fined $22,000 by UEFA for celebration gesture

Ronaldo fined $22,000 by UEFA for celebration gesture

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined 22,600 dollars by UEFA for appearing to make an obscene gesture while celebrating his side’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.

The Portugal international was guilty of “improper conduct,’’ the control, ethics and disciplinary body of the European football organisation ruled on Thursday.

Ronaldo had gestured to his crotch following the final whistle after his hat-trick earned Juventus a 3-0 win over Atletico on March 12, which sent the Italians into the Champions League quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

The gesture appeared to be a response to Atletico Coach Diego Simeone, who had celebrated in similar fashion during his team’s 2-0 win in the home leg.

Simeone was subsequently also fined 20,000 euros by UEFA.

  • Ronaldo recalled by Portugal for first time since World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo was recalled by the Portuguese national squad on Friday for the first time since last year’s World Cup.

The 34-year-old, who is Portugal’s most capped player with 154 appearances and all-time leading scorer with 85 goals, had not been included for any games in the second half of last year.

Coach Fernando Santos had initially said that a mutual decision had been made to give Ronaldo a rest following his move from Real Madrid to Juventus but had been ambiguous about the player’s future when questioned in November.

Portugal continued to flourish without Ronaldo, winning their Nations League group against Poland and Italy with a game to spare to qualify for the final four-team tournament which the country will host in June.

However, any doubts about his future were removed when Ronaldo’s name was among 25 read by Santos during a news conference for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Ukraine and Serbia

“Cristiano is the best player in the world and is returning to his team,” said Santos. “Any team is stronger with him.”

Portugal host Serbia in Lisbon on March 22 and Ukraine three days later.
