Cross River workers prepare for strike

The organised labour unions in Cross River says it is set for the industrial action as proposed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The State chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Monday Ogbodum, said this during an interview in Calabar on Saturday.

NLC had fixed Sunday midnight for the commencement of the strike if the state government failed to implement the new minimum wage of N70, 000.

Ogbodum said except the Cross River government implemented the new  wage regime there would be no going back on the industrial action.

The TUC chairman, who said that negotiation with the state government was still in progress, however said that will not stop them from joining the strike if the need be.

“Yes, we are still in talk with the government. We had a meeting on Thursday and another one on Friday that ended late in the evening.

“There is going to be another meeting today (Saturday), but that is not to say things are well, though the government has shown some level of seriousness.

“Our position is that even if we sign any document or agreement today, that does not still amount to implementation,’’ he said.

Gov Otu begs labour to shelve planned strike

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River has appealed to labour unions in the state to shelve their planned  industrial action over none implementation of the new minimum wage.

The governor said his administration remained committed to the implementation of the new wage of N70, 000 recently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

The governor made the appeal during the 5th edition of the State Solemn Assembly held Saturday night at U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar.

Represented by his deputy, Dr Peter Odey, Otu said his government would continue to prioritise welfare of workers in the state.

It would be recalled that labour unions in the state had on Wednesday issued notice of 2-day warning strike scheduled to commence midnight of Sunday.

The unions attributed the planned action to the breakdown of negotiations between it and the government.

The organised labour threatened that after the warning strike the industrial action would continue with a December 1 panned nationwide strike.

“I appeal to the leadership of organised labor and all affiliates of the NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress) and TUC (Trade Union Congress) to suspend their planned strike.

The police said that the victim in her statement, alleged that her father, mallam Umaru was responsible for her pregnancy.

She added that her father started having illicit affairs with her since 2023 in a hotel located in Calabar and had threatened to kill her should she reveal this to anybody.

  • Strike: Labour shifts ground in Cross River

Strike: Labour shifts ground in Cross River

The labour unions in Cross River State have postponed the planned industrial action slated to commence on Wednesday after negotiations hit dead end between the unions and the government.

The organised labour however, slated a 2-day warning strike for November 25 and 26. The state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Monday Ogbodum, disclosed this in Calabar on Tuesday.

He said that the decision for the warning strike was arrived at following the meeting of various organs of organised labour in the state on Tuesday.

Ogbodum however, said that the government had again invited labour to reconvene on Thursday after they (labour) staged a walkout from the meeting of the Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee on the new minimum wage on Monday.

According to him, we have just concluded our meetings and our agreement is that we will shelve the planned strike for Wednesday for a warning strike that will take place on Monday and Tuesday.

“As for Thursday meeting, we will attend and if they are still not bringing anything concrete on the table by Thursday, we will have no option than to embark on the national strike slated for December 1. But the warning strike will definitely take place on Monday and Tuesday.”

It would be recalled that the labour unions had attributed government inaction towards implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage as the reason for their walkout.

“From the look of things, this same committee seems not ready for anything. We have heard from grapevine that the government is not looking at commencing implementation until January 2025. Our worry is that the Cross River Governor was a member of this committee that gave birth to the new wage.

“He was South South representative in that committee and he is the one lagging behind while other states have already made pronouncement on this new wage to the workers.

“Before now, he has assured us that he will implement whatever that is agreed upon. As we speak, there is no sign of seriousness that the government is ready for the workers.”

Also speaking on Monday, the NLC chairman in the state, Mr Gregory Olayi, said that labour staged a walkout because the government representative in the committee appeared not serious .

He said that aside the fact that the government had not put anything on the table, the government representative seemed not to be acting on the mandate of the governor.

“In our last meeting on Thursday, they formed a technical committee which we had expected will come with something for us to discuss with. They came empty and unprepared from the look of things and we had to stage a walkout until they are prepared for us,” he said.

Olayi said that labour was meeting with all its organs in Cross River on Tuesday and whatever decision of the organs would be followed.

“We had on Thursday gave the government, a 7 day ultimatum, which expires Monday midnight. We will be meeting with all the organs and whatever decision taken, we all will see to it after the meeting on Tuesday.

  • Cross River PDP SEC meets first time in 2 years

Cross River PDP SEC meets first time in 2 years

Following the crisis that engulfed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River, culminating in the removal of the state chairman, the State Executive Council (SEC) held its meeting for the first time in two years on Tuesday.

The meeting took place at the state secretariat of the party, under the leadership of the acting Chairman, Chief Austin Edibe. Members agreed on the need for rebranding the party in the state, ahead of future elections.

It would be recalled that the State Working Committee (SWC) had, on Friday, removed Venatius Ikem as the state chairman and appointed Edibe as the acting chairman.

The SWC had hinged Ikem’s removal on allegations of financial misappropriation, high-handiness and ineptitude.

Edibe, who was inaugurated as acting chairman on Monday, had promised to re-organise the party in the state to winning ways.

Members applauded the chairman for the SEC meeting, noting that there could not have been any better time to have the meeting which, he said, was long overdue.

The chairman enjoined members to prepare for better days ahead and gear up for “rebuilding, rebranding and repositioning” the party, ahead of 2027.

“We cannot pretend about the fact that our citizens are suffering; this hardship we are experiencing in the country today is caused by the bad governance policies of the APC.

“We are all living witnesses to the display of democratic dividends experienced in Cross River North, powered by Sen. Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe and our members of the House of Representatives, Godwin Offiono and Peter Akpanke.

“If that experience in the northern part of the state must go round, then we will need to re-organise our party and re-strategise on the right approach to win elections in 2027 and reclaim Cross River State,” Edibe stated.

Ikem had described his removal as political and that it was carried out against the dictates of the party’s constitution. He had also said that he would consider the possibility of approaching the court to challenge his removal from office.

  • Cross River PDP Chairman kicks against his removal from office

Cross River PDP Chairman kicks against his removal from office

Mr Venatius Ikem has described his alledged removal as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River by the State Working Committee (SWC) as faulty and against the party’s constitution.

While noting his purported removal to be political, Ikem said he might consider legal action against the act. He made his position known while fielding questions from newsmen in Calabar on Saturday.

Ikem described the allegations against him put forward by the  State Working Committee (SWC) as not only baseless, but an attempt made to portray him as misfit for the office he had held for over four years.

It will be recalled that the state’s SWC had on Friday removed Ikem from office as the chairman of the party in the state on allegations of financial misappropriation, high-handiness and ineptitude.

Immediately, the SWC announced Mr Austin Edibe who was the party’s Vice Chairman in the Northern senatorial district of the party in the state as his replacement.

However, Ikem said, “Like they always say, you give a dog a bad name when you want to hang it.The truth is that to the best of my knowledge, I run one of the most efficient EXCOS of our party.

“We meet regularly and I think in the last quarter or so we have had two stakeholders meetings we have our regular State Committee meetings and the stakeholders meetings.

“Secondly, I think there must be issues to discuss, whenever there are issues and programme I am always there, we just had a party revalidation exercise this year, we had the party congresses this year we performed well.

“The last local government elections, we stood up very strong and I am very proud of our outing despite the outcome given the circumstances

“To me, I know and everybody knows that I am doing my best to run the party within the context we find ourselves. so talking about not holding meetings or ineptitude leadership is completely out of the question.

“One of the problems I see in PDP is the hangover of being in government, we have been in government for so long that many people have never experienced being out of government. They believe that things should be the way it used to be when we held sway in government house.

“The drastic change to being an opposition party is not being properly absorbed by our members so their expectations are usually not what is possible in terms of availability of welfare, availability of funds for this and that, but even given that we have done very well.

“The national assembly members have been very supportive, they have programmes and even with some stipends to support us monthly.”

On the allegation of misappropriation of fund, Ikem who said he ran a cashless policy, said that the books were there for everyone to see.

Ikem alleged that insecurity of a sitting senator was behind his alledged removal. According to him, my crime is that I am supporting Hon. Peter Akpanke against him (Senator). I don’t know whether anybody is contesting against him in 2027.

“He used to say Peter wanted to contest against him, but Peter has said he is not contesting against him so I’m supporting Peter against him. Those are the underlying political issues.

“These ones are just cover ups to say they have a valid reason. The real reason is political that I should not be supporting Peter. For me, the same support I give to him is the same support all my elected officials are entitled to. it does not matter the positions they hold, so I cannot support him as a senator more than I am supporting other members,” he said.

    We’re re-organising PDP in C’River for future elections – Sen. Agom-Jarigbe

Meanwhile, a member of the National Assembly, Sen. Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe has said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River has been reorganised to build a strong and united party for future elections. Agom-Jarigbe, a PDP senator representing Cross River North, also took responsibility for Friday’s removal of the PDP Chairman in the state, Mr Venatius Ikem.

This is contained in a statement entitled: “The Suspension of the State Chairman and the Appointment of an Acting Chairman” and made available to newsmen in Calabar on Saturday. The senator said it was high time tough decisions were taken in a bid to reposition the party, adding that whoever was affected by the decisions should submit to the supremacy of the party.

“Along with other well- meaning leaders of our great party,  I take responsibility for the goings-on in our party, not only as your senator and leader but as a steadfast member of this great party, committed to its unity, progress and unrelenting pursuit of excellence in governance and representation.

“The decision by the State Executive Committee to suspend the state chairman and appoint Chief Austin Edibe as acting Chairman is a significant and deliberate step to reposition our party for future success. This action, taken in line with the provisions of our party’s constitution, reflects the will of the majority and the resolute commitment of our party to strengthen its structures and processes,” he stated.

Agom-Jarigbe urged the acting chairman to build bridges, inspire confidence and chart a course that would make the party an envy of others. He expressed his ‘heartfelt gratitude’ to the removed chairman for his efforts in leading the party over the past three years.

“Leadership comes with its unique challenges, and I commend you for your dedication during your tenure. As we transition, I urge you to submit to the decision of the majority, remain a loyal and committed party man and contribute meaningfully to the
growth of PDP in any capacity. We wish you well in your future political endeavours and trust that your wealth of experience will continue to benefit the party,” he said.

The senator commended party leaders across the 18 council areas of the state for their unyielding commitment and steadfastness.

“You are the backbone of the PDP, and your dedication is the reason we continue to stand tall in the face of challenges,” he stated.

While pledging his continued support to PDP, the lawmaker called on all members in the state to eschew divisiveness and embrace peace and mutual understanding for the betterment of the party.

“Let us remember that the task ahead is not a walk in the park. Rebuilding, strengthening and repositioning the PDP will require the collective efforts of everyone. Let us put aside personal differences and unite for the common good. The future of our party depends on our ability to work together hand-in-hand for a brighter tomorrow,” Agom-Jarigbe said.

The state working committee of the party had, on Friday, removed Ikem on over allegations of financial misappropriation, high-handiness and ineptitude. The removed chairman had, however, debunked the allegations, maintaining that his removal was political.

SWC removes Cross River PDP chairman

The state chairman of the Cross River chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Venatius Ikem has been removed from office by the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party.

The entire 14 SWC members, excluding the sacked chairman, the state auditor who is under suspension  signed the letter dated 15 of November that announced the chairman’s removal.

Similarly, the 18 local government chairmen of party also endorsed the removal of the chairman at a press briefing at the party’s Secretariat in Calabar on Friday.

They hinged his removal on allegation of misappropriation of funds, high handedness and inability to manage the state’s chapter of the PDP.

The leadership in their resolution accused the sacked Chairman of failure to perform his duties as outlined in the party constitution.

The resolution reads in part: “Whereas, his actions have been detrimental to the party’s interest and wellbeing;and as a result, he has brought the party into disrepute, hatred and contempt.

“Whereas, the Chairman neglects to carry out lawful directives of the party, mismanage the finances of the party, does not pay party dues and does not call for meetings or attend meetings regularly as required by the Party’s Constitution.

“Whereas, the Chairman engages in anti-party activities and conducts likely to cause disaffection among members of the party or is likely to disrupt the peaceful, lawful and efficient conduct of the business of the Party.

    “Whereas, the Chairman has contravened the provisions of Article 58 of the Constitution of the People’s Democratic Party, 2017 as amended;

“Whereas, we have exhausted all avenues to address these issues through internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

“And in pursuant to Article 59 of the Constitution of the People’s Democratic Party, 2017 as amended,  the Chairman is hereby suspended from office with immediate effect.”

Meanwhile, the chairman of the forum of chapter chairmen of  PDP, Chef Godwin Abeng who address the media alongside other chairmen, said Ikem’s removal is a good  omen for the party in Cross River.

He attributed the poor outing of the PDP in the 2023 general elections to the poor leadership direction of the removed chairman.

“We hereby endorsed his removal by the SWC and know that the party will now progress and also start  preparation for the 2027 elections in earnest.

Following Ikem’s removal, Mr Austin Edibe, Vice Chairman of the Northern senatorial district of the party has been appointed as the acting chairman of the party in Cross River.

Also, Mr Julius Udayi has been appointed as the acting Vice Chairman of the North.

However, when contacted, mr Venatius Ikem denied the allegations against him, saying that the process of his alleged removal was faulty.

Minimum Wage: Cross River Committee gets 4 weeks deadline

The  Cross River Government has handed a four-week period to the Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee for the N70,000 Minimum Wage to conclude its assignment.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, who disclosed this in an interview in Calabar on Monday, said that the committee, inaugurated on Monday and chaired by the Head of Service, Dr Innocent Eteng, should agree on modalities to fashion out an acceptable minimum wage for the state civil servants.

Ekpang, however, said that the new wage that would be agreed upon should be such that would not hurt the state revenue.

“The governor has always maintained his desire to make the state workers happy by enhancing their welfare and working environment.

“The negotiation for the new minimum wage is to be concluded within the next four weeks and this is one of such moves.

“However, what will be agreed on and it’s implementation by the committee will be one that will not affect the smooth running of the government or other sectors of the state economy.”

The membership of the committee included Mr Gregory Olayi and Monday Ogbodum as well as the Chairmen of the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.
