NSCDC deploys officers to check hoarding, hawking of PMS in Cross River

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed its operatives to depots and fuel stations in Cross River to ensure that available stock of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is sold to the public.

Samuel Fadeyi, the State Commandant, NSCDC, said this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Calabar.

NAN had earlier reported the closure of some filling stations within the state and return of street hawking of fuel, immediately after the president’s inaugural remark on Monday that subsidy had been removed.

This act of hoarding by petroleum products dealers in the state caused untold hardships on the people as many were stranded in bus-stops due to the unavailability of vehicles to convey them to their destinations.

Fadeyi who declared that there was no room for hoarding and hawking of the PMS in the black markets, also appealed to the people not to engage in panic buying.

“I have sent my men out to depots and fuel stations to ensure that available stock was sold to the people; this creation of artificial scarcity is not allowed.

“Right from 2022, there was an announcement that subsidy removal will commence from June 2023, the Federal Government had said it by the end of June, that there would be full deregulation of the product.

“Also, I am sure that the government is working on palliatives to absorb the shock that subsidy removal will bring to a lot of people, so, I urge Nigerians to be patient as the issues are resolved,” he said.

Fadeyi also said that he had mandated his men to arrest anyone engaging in black marketing of petroleum products.

The commandant urged the public to report the activities of hawkers to the corps.

Hold me responsible if my successor fails to perform – Ayade

Gov. Ben Ayade, says he should be held responsible should his successor fail to enthrone good governance in Cross River.

Ayade made the declaration during a Thanksgiving Mass held at Saint Charles Wanga Catholic Church, Essien Town, Calabar, on Sunday.

The outgoing governor, however, expressed confidence in the personality and capacity of the incoming Governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, to perform.

He stressed that the people would soon get to understand why he supported Otu to succeed him in office.

“That is the kind of Governor you are expecting. A man who is ready to sacrifice, a man who is ready to surrender his comfort to ensure that the citizens of Cross River State sleep well.

“No wonder, all the enemies started to ensure that today doesn’t happen, but God said devil you are a liar.

“If it was somebody else, by now, arrangements would have been in place on how to demolish streets, demolish houses, but here we have a man of God who has compassion. A man with character, a man with integrity, a man with honour, and the fear of God.

“If Bassey Otu does very well, glory to God, if Bassey Otu perform very well, after praising God, praise him for his goodness.

“But, if Bassey Otu does not do well, hold me responsible, because this alliance and this commitment to hand over power to Bassey Otu was signed and sealed since 2014,” he stated.

Admonishing the outgoing and incoming Governor, the officiating Minister, Rev. Fr. Malachi Ephraim, lauded Ayade for the love he has shown to the church.

“This is a man who has showed the most love to the church than any other Governor in Cross River. As for Prince Otu, I beg you, from tomorrow, I beg you, just be Governor for Cross River State,” he pleaded.

The Cleric who preached from the book of Genesis 11:1 to 9, where he drew lessons from the ancient story of the Tower of Babel, urged the people to be united to move the state forward.

According to him, “Pentecost means that as people from Cross River, we must come together to build up a state for ourselves.

“But the Lord told me that at this stage, you must do what is right in Cross River State. The spirit makes Senator Ntufam Bassey Otu qualify.

And to Sen. Bassey Otu, Fr. Ephraim said It’s not going to be easy: if not for God, this seat is not for you, no be you for sidon here, So as you begin, rededicate yourself to God as you begin, go and serve your people,” the Cleric said.

  • FG inaugurates barite processing plant in Cross River

FG inaugurates barite processing plant in Cross River

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated a multimillion naira barite processing plant in Cross River, capable of processing 10 tons of the mineral per hour.

Inaugurating the plant on Thursday in Ugaga Community, Yala Local Government Area of the state, Mr Olamilekan Adegbite, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, said Nigeria would no longer import the mineral.

Newsmen reports that barite is a mineral crushed and screened to uniform sizes and used as filler or extender for industrial products or a weighting agent in petroleum drilling

Adegbite said before now, the country was exporting raw barite ore, which would be processed abroad, and was, therefore, losing lots of value because it was not processed locally.

According to him, this motivated his ministry to launch the project of establishing the barite processing plant in November 2021

“Nigeria has a 4.8 gravity standard of barite in vast quantities in parts of northern Cross River, especially in Yala LGA, which is higher than the 4.2 found elsewhere.

“For this reason, the Federal Government decided to establish a processing plant in the state to help both artisans and commercial miners process the mineral for export and the oil industry.

“The choice of Ugaga as a location for the plant is predicated on its possession of rich deposits of barite among the South-South states.

“Also, for its closeness to Port Harcourt where the processed barites are required for oil exploration in line with local content and value addition policy in Nigeria,” he noted.

The Minister said the informal trading of unprocessed barite in the country led to revenue and job losses, adding that establishing the plant would create jobs, improve revenue and attract foreign markets.

He said the inauguration was an opportunity to highlight the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in showing some of the potentials available in the mining sector, which could serve as an alternative revenue source.

Adegbite said that no fewer than 20,000 jobs would be created along the barite mining value chain in the South-South geopolitical zone with the emergence of some subsidiaries and service-oriented companies.

In his remarks, the traditional head of Ugaga Kingdom, Ogamode Ipuole, commended the Federal Government for the gesture in his community.

He, however, requested the employment of youths in the area in the plant to reduce the high rate of unemployment in the community.

Also speaking, Mr Yunusa Mohammed, Director of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM), said artisanal barite miners in northern Cross River, in their clusters, would now process the resource at the plant for greater wealth addition.

He added that due to the presence of the plant in the community, there would soon be an expansion of the local economy.

  • Akpet: Cross River community where children shun education for illegal mining

Akpet: Cross River community where children shun education for illegal mining

    By Christian Njoku

Akpet is a community in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River it is blessed with commercial deposit of minerals such as limestone, lithium ore, lepidolite, spodumene, and laterite

The community attracts lots visitors. While some come to explore business opportunities in the area, others visit to exploit the mineral resources.

In spite of its huge mineral deposit, the community still lack high quality hospitals, schools and good access roads.

Residents say mining companies operating in the area have not kept their promises of providing the community with these facilities.

In addition to putting up with lack of these basic facilities, the communities have also complained about the consequences of mining activities on their environment.

The locals also complain that aside the environmental impact and security challenges, their means of livelihood which is agriculture has been affected by the activities of the miners.

For instance in 2022, His Royal Highness, Atte Evong, Clan Head of Akpet Central had alleged that the activities of the mining companies was causing insecurity and environmental hazards in the area.

According to him, landslides and collapse of abandoned mining sites were now regular in Biase part of the community,

“When they abandon the mines without covering them we no longer farm in those areas and we cannot pass through these spots because of the danger they pose.

“The vast lands in the form of abandoned mines sites have impacted farming activities and by extension have reduced food availability in our markets.

“We have inaugurated a 21-man committee against illegal mining and influx of unidentified persons, headed by Mr Otte Ebit and Mr Bassey Egbai as secretary, to utilise legal means to discharge its mandate,” the media quoted him as saying.

Going by antecedents, the community’s concerns are not unfounded. In January 2022, an illegal mining site in Umai Community in Biase LGA collapsed killing six illegal miners while others escaped.

Worried by series of mining incidents in the state, Gov. Ben Ayade in November 2022 placed a ban on illegal mining activities in Cross River.

He directed security agencies to seal all illegal mining sites and to arrest and prosecute persons or firms engaged in such activities.

But his order fell on deaf ears as months after the activities of the illegal miners continued unabated,

The situation has taken a new twist as lack of interest in education among school age children has continued to rise as they are now engaged in the ‘more lucrative’ illegal mining operations.

One of the kids 11 years old as Michael (not real name) said they go to different parts of the community on search of precious stone to harvest.

“It is not an easy job but on your lucky day you can see some gemstones that can fetch you between N5000 to N15,000.”, Michael said.

Another 13 years old boy, Okon (not real name), said he had been doing the job for sometimes and knows a gemstone when he sees one.

Okon revealed that there is already market for the solid minerals whenever they find one.

“I used to attend the primary school in the village before I saw some children going out in the morning and returning in the afternoon looking dirty.

“I asked and was told that they usually go to dig for precious stones from which they make a lot of money and help their families.

“We know it is dangerous because one or two mines have collapsed in our community but we still do the job because it is lucrative”, he said.

Mrs Rosemary Eboh, a trader corroborated said the lack of interest in education had become a new normal in the area.

“Some of them make as much as N15, 000 daily after selling the stones. It is just that when children start seeing that kind of money they become disinterested in education,” she said.

Although, some parents in the community disapprove of this new development the business is growing and more children are joining.

The Cross River government says it is taking steps to stop the trend.

Mr Castro Ezama, Special Adviser to Gov Ben Ayade on Education said the government was not ignorant of the role of education in poverty alleviation.

He said the government would embark of aggressive campaign to sensitise the people of the area on the dangers encouraging their wards to abandon education in search of precious stones.

“This is a sad reality because if these children grow and they can no longer get these gemstones, their alternative would be crime.

“We have to tackle this menace in partnership with the traditional institutions in those communities,” he said.

Mr Mayowa Omosebi, the Federal Mines Officer for Cross River, said that no mining firm in the state would allow under-aged to work in its site.

He explained that when the mining companies moved to different locations within their cadastral zone, children of the locals go there to dig for stones because of it is lucrative.

“There are also areas that have not been covered by mining companies and children go to such locations to start digging on their own in the guise of doing farm work and you cannot stop them from digging on their land”, he said.

While the blame game continues, the future of these children in Akpet is on the edge. It is important that concerted effort should be made by stakeholders to arrest this trend.

As a nation striving to be among some of the very advanced countries in the world it is important the country prioritises the future it its children.

  • Cross River PDP accuses Ayade of result manipulation, set to challenge guber election result in court

Cross River PDP accuses Ayade of result manipulation, set to challenge guber election result in court

In Cross River state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finalized arrangements to challenge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) declaration of Prince Bassey Edet Otu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as governor-elect at the Election Petition Tribunal (EPT).

The Cross River PDP has also accused current Governor, Ben Ayade and INEC of tampering with election result papers in the state.

They claimed that Ayade and the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Professor Gabriel Yomere, and other INEC collation officers have tampered with original results sheets and manipulated BVAS machines used for the Governorship and state House of Assembly elections on March-18, 2023.

In his reaction, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof Gabriel Yomere denied the allegations, dismissing it as untrue.

He said: “There is no truth in the allegations that I held a meeting with the governor and his team in order to reconcile and manipulate the electoral materials used for the gubernatorial election

“The last time I met with the governor was shortly before Christmas and I went with my team. That was shortly before I travelled for Christmas.

“Even if I succeed in manipulating the BVAS, what about the backend at the INEC portal? You can’t manipulate that.

“The only people allowed to check the BVAS are the lawyers to the political parties and they do that in the presence of INEC staff.”

There have been speculations that the governor, the REC and some collation officers have held meetings on how to reconcile the irregularities in the last governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

One of our sources said, “Ayade and the INEC REC are particularly worried at the issue of over voting and some irreconcilable differences recorded at the polling units and the number of votes declared from the polling units.

The sources further revealed that, “They had a meeting on Saturday night trying to come up with modalities on how they can look at declared results in each local government to tally with hurriedly declared results especially where they have over voting.”

PDP State Publicity Secretary, Mike Ojisi, expressed worry and called for genuine efforts to protect the election materials from deliberate manipulation.

“After a series of meetings, arrangements have been concluded between the REC, the electoral officers (EOs) of each LG, and the Returning Officers, to bring out all the BVAS within each polling unit across the state that have over voting in the just concluded elections.

“With the BVAS, they would be able to thumbprint additional ballots papers to balance the votes and the number of persons that were accredited in each of the polling units across the state.

“The governor has concluded the arrangements for this and it will commence today.

“We call on stakeholders and relevant agencies to demand for the original results sheets used in announcing the results from REC before they temper with it,” Ojisi explained.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Cross River, Bassey Otu, as the winner of the March 18 election in the State.

According to INEC, Otu, a former member of the Senate, scored 258,619 votes to defeat his closest challenger and an incumbent Senator, Sandy Onor, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 179,636 votes.

  • Labour Party denies having alliance with APC in Cross River

Labour Party denies having alliance with APC in Cross River

Labour Party (LP), on Monday, said that it had no alliance with All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River.

The party said this in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary in the state, Dr Lekam Ofem.

The state APC Chairman, Mr Alphonsus Eba, had, at a news briefing on Monday in Calabar, announced the party’s decision to endorse and adopt LP candidate for Yala State Constituency I, Brian Odey.

Eba had explained that the adoption of the LP candidate followed the Supreme Court judgment nullifying the candidacy of Mrs Regina Anyogo who was the candidate of APC.

He had said that the alliance was to ensure that supporters of LP reciprocated the gesture by voting for the APC governorship candidate, Sen. Bassey Otu, in the March 11 governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Ofem said that the party’s attention had been drawn to the statement issued by the APC leadership to the effect that LP had collapsed its structure for APC, insisting that his party had no alliance with APC or any other political party.

He said LP had a governorship candidate in the state in person of Mr Ogar Osim, saying that he was very much in the race.

“The endorsement of LP’s candidate for Yala State Constituency I has no affiliation with APC in Cross River and LP in the state has completely dissociated itself from such an arrangement.

“We understand that LP’s outstanding performance during the presidential election where it won in Cross River, including Yala LGA which is the primary constituency of the APC state chairman, has placed the party as a threat.

“We, therefore, urge our teeming supporters to remain calm and disregard any rumour in the social media that is not endorsed by the leadership of the party in the state,” he stated.
