Club World Cup winners draw FA Community Shield winners in EPL opener

Club World Cup champions Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge by FA Community Shield holders Crystal Palace in their English Premier League (EPL) season opener on Sunday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls Chelsea clinched the Club World Cup in July with a victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), while Crystal Palace stunned defending EPL champions Liverpool to lift the FA Community Shield earlier this August.

Both sides struggled to convert their chances in the cagey encounter. Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, however, found the net, but his effort was ruled out, following a VAR review, leaving the game deadlocked.

Elsewhere at Old Trafford, Arsenal defeated Manchester United by a lone goal in their EPL season opener, and Nottingham Forest defeated Brentford 3:1 at home.

BREAKING: Crystal Palace thrash Liverpool to win Community Shield

FA Cup winners Crystal Palace have thrashed Premier League champions Liverpool to win the FA Community Shield 2025.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool 3-2 via penalties on Sunday after the game ended 2:2 draw after 90 minutes.

Hugo Ekitiké, making his debut for the Reds, netted a tidy finish in the 4th minute. However, the Eagles restored parity after Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a penalty in the 17th minute. Virgil van Dijk had fouled Ismaila Sarr.

Around the 21st minute of play, Jeremie Frimpong’s cross looped in off the post, restoring a 2–1 advantage for Liverpool. Ismaila Sarr went on to smash in a superb late equaliser in the 77th minute to make it 2–2.

In the penalty shootout, big names such as Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott all failed to convert their spot kicks. However, Mateta, Sarr, and substitute Justin Devenny scored for the Eagles.

Dean Henderson, the Lions’ shot-stopper, delivered heroics with crucial saves, cementing his man-of-the-match claim.

Devenny’s calm, decisive spot-kick sealed the shootout and gave Crystal Palace their first-ever Community Shield title.

  • FA Cup: Pep Guardiola furious after Man City defeat

FA Cup: Pep Guardiola furious after Man City defeat

Man City manager Pep Guardiola was in no mood to speak in depth regarding the VAR controversy in their 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Eberechi Eze’s 16th minute goal proved decisive as Crystal Palace secured the first piece of major silverware in their history.

Perhaps the biggest talking point of the game came at the other end of the pitch, however, after Dean Henderson appeared to handle the ball outside of the box, denying Erling Haaland a goal scoring opportunity.

VAR intervened and decided against giving Henderson his marching orders, something Guardiola strongly disagreed with, storming the pitch after the final whistle to confront the goalkeeper.

Speaking to the press after the game, Guardiola was in no mood to talk in depth about the situation, simply saying: “Ask the referee.”

On why Omar Marmoush took the penalty over Haaland, he added: “I don’t know, I didn’t speak to them. They made a decision. They decide.”

  • Nottingham Forest’s Champions League hopes dented

Nottingham Forest’s Champions League hopes dented

Nottingham Forest remain out of the Premier League’s five UEFA Champions League qualification spots, after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park – a result that means Forest have now won just one of their last five league games.

With top-five rivals Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Chelsea all winning their most recent league clashes, Forest’s trip to South London had a ‘must-win’ feel to it.

For a game carrying such importance, the Tricky Trees started rather slowly, but were almost handed a huge stroke of luck when a Palace defensive mix-up saw Tyrick Mitchell’s headed back pass almost evade the on-rushing Dean Henderson.

Mitchell was involved in a more positive light when he created the game’s first chance of note, which came after the half-hour mark.

It was his deep cross to the far post which fell perfectly for Daniel Munoz, but his volleyed effort was beaten away by Matz Sels. An even bigger chance fell Forest’s way before the break, though, and it was manufactured in typical style.

A free-flowing counter-attack was trademark Forest, but after being teed up perfectly by Chris Wood, Anthony Elanga didn’t have the finish to match as his effort forced a fine stop out of Henderson.

The game sparked into life in 14 mad second-half seconds, though. Barely five minutes after the restart, Ismaila Sarr wriggled free inside the area and was thwarted from point-blank range by Sels.

Just 14 seconds later at the other end, only a last-ditch block from Maxence Lacroix denied Chris Wood becoming the first-ever Forest player to score 10+ Premier League away goals in a single season.

It wouldn’t be a show without VAR these days, and after an incredibly busy weekend, it was called into action shortly before the hour mark to award a penalty, when Sels felled the all-action Mitchell in the area.

Eberechi Eze assumed responsibility from the spot, confidently dispatching to score in a third successive game.

However, that proved to be the wake-up call Forest needed, as they hit back almost instantly, with Murillo’s outstretched leg fortuitously turning Neco Williams’ strike into the far corner.

Chances to snatch all three points were few and far between, but Eze did rattle the crossbar in the dying moments, while substitute Eddie Nketiah had a stoppage-time goal ruled out for offside.

That huge let-off perhaps made a point look like a better result than it actually was for Forest, who are now two points outside of the top-five, despite occupying third spot for the majority of the season.

Palace, meanwhile, are now effectively consigned to a ninth bottom-half finish in 10 Premier League seasons.

  • Newcastle hit five past Palace to storm into top three

Newcastle hit five past Palace to storm into top three

Newcastle United secured a sixth successive win across all competitions by thrashing Crystal Palace 5-0 at St James’ Park, cementing their place inside the Premier League (PL) top five.

Well aware that a win would move them into third place in the Premier League Newcastle sought an early goal at St James’ Park and top scorer Alexander Isak almost delivered with a powerful header that grazed the crossbar.

The Magpies dominated the opening stages, and duly took the lead inside the opening quarter-hour through Jacob Murphy, who fired into the roof of the net from a near-impossible angle for his third goal in as many matches.

Despite struggling for momentum in the contest, Palace were suddenly given a lifeline when Nick Pope clattered into Chris Richards inside the area, leading to a penalty after a lengthy VAR review.

Eberechi Eze stepped up to take the spot-kick, but he spurned the chance to score his fourth goal in six appearances as Nick Pope saved comfortably.

Disaster struck again for the visitors as Marc Guehi- just as he did in the reverse fixture – scored an own goal, diverting Harvey Barnes’ cross into the Eagles’ net.

To cap off a commanding first period, Barnes slammed home his fourth goal in three games into the bottom corner before Fabian Schar made it 4-0 with a glancing header past Dean Henderson from Murphy’s free-kick.

Damage limitation was the order of the day for Palace in the second period, but they had no answer to the rampant Toon Army.

The Eagles shipped another in the 58th minute, allowing Isak plenty of space on the edge of the area to curl into the bottom corner.

Mercifully for Oliver Glasner’s men, that’s where the scoring stopped as Newcastle took the opportunity to rest some of their key players ahead of this weekend’s meeting with fellow European hopefuls Aston Villa.

The Magpies’ clinical display gave their still absent manager Eddie Howe plenty to cheer as it established a five-point buffer inside the top five.

Palace have now conceded five goals in each of their last two games, with this a sixth failure to win from their last seven away H2Hs.

  • Man City rediscover best form in win against Palace

Man City rediscover best form in win against Palace

Manchester City completed a remarkable comeback, coming from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 5-2 and end the Eagles’ eight-match unbeaten away run.

With how this season’s gone for Manchester City, Pep Guardiola probably can’t wait for it to come to an end.

His side are still battling for a top-four spot though, and their chances took a hit inside 10 minutes, when a sweeping Palace move culminated in Ismaïla Sarr squaring for the unmarked Eberechi Eze to tap home at the far post.

City ought to have drawn level within minutes when the departing Kevin De Bruyne freed Omar Marmoush in behind, but he was thwarted by the midriff of Dean Henderson when one-on-one.

Guardiola felt Chris Richards pulled Marmoush at the vital moment as he went to shoot and felt he should’ve been sent off.

His mood won’t have been helped soon after then, when Richards climbed highest inside the area to head home Adam Wharton’s corner from inside the six-yard box.

He must’ve been feeling worse still when Eze swept home a third, but fortunately for the Spaniard, the offside flag spared his side’s blushes.

City took full advantage of that reprieve too, halving the deficit shortly after the half-hour mark through De Bruyne, who crashed a 30-yard free-kick in off the post.

James McAtee should’ve equalised almost straight from the restart, but with City’s tails firmly up, they didn’t have to wait too much longer for a leveller.

There was an element of fortune to how the ball fell to Marmoush inside the area, but there was nothing lucky about the finish as he leathered home from six yards out.

The comeback should’ve been complete before the break, but within two minutes of the restart, City had the job done.

There was an element of simplicity about it, as De Bruyne teed up Mateo Kovačić on the edge of the area who simply swept the ball into the bottom corner.

McAtee had spurned at least two great chances to mark his inclusion today, and he did eventually get his goal as he burst in behind to latch onto Ederson’s measured ball in behind, bringing the ball down, rounding Henderson and rolling into an empty net.

City looked close to their irrepressible best at times today, and duly added a fifth goal 10 minutes from time, with Nico O’Reilly providing it as he volleyed home from the edge of the area. That rounded off a great win for City, who have now heaped a wealth of pressure on their top-four rivals to perform later this weekend.

  • FA Cup: Palace thump Fulham to reach semi-final

FA Cup: Palace thump Fulham to reach semi-final

Crystal Palace won a sixth successive away match across all competitions without conceding, with this 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage sending them through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the third time in the last nine years.

The visitors were able to welcome striker Jean-Philippe Mateta back into the starting XI for the first time since his horror injury in the previous round, but his impact was limited by a dominant start from Fulham.

Opposite number Rodrigo Muniz could have opened the scoring inside two minutes after bullying his way through the Palace defence, but his left-footed strike was curled wide of the target.

Marco Silva’s men were in complete command, but working Dean Henderson was proving tricky, as Andreas Pereira proved when he dragged an effort wide following some great work down the left by Calvin Bassey.

After a stoppage in play at the first half’s midway point, Palace gained a foothold in the contest and finally threatened through Jefferson Lerma, whose outside-of-the-foot volley cannoned off the crossbar.

That was a sign of things to come as the Eagles broke the deadlock in some style through Eberechi Eze, who backed up his maiden England goal by dropping a shoulder to beat a man on the edge of the area before brilliantly curling into the bottom corner.

Four of his last five Palace goals have come in cup competitions, and he turned provider to double the visitors’ lead before the break with a pinpoint cross to the near post that was headed home by Ismaïla Sarr.

With no improvement evident from his side upon the restart, Silva turned to his bench and introduced Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traoré in an attempt to change the game.

The Cottagers were immediately more dynamic, with Willian forcing Henderson into a smart save before Bassey was denied by a stunning block from Sarr at point-blank range.

Those misses proved especially costly, as Palace regrouped and found the net again to put the contest to bed.

Daichi Kamada released fellow substitute Eddie Nketiah to slot past Bernd Leno, putting the seal on a comprehensive victory that books their place in the semi-final at Wembley.

Fulham’s wait for a first appearance at that stage since 2001/02 continues, while they’ve now failed to win any of the last seven H2Hs on their own turf.

  • Transfer: Crystal Palace reject Tottenham’s £70m bid for defender

Transfer: Crystal Palace reject Tottenham’s £70m bid for defender

Crystal Palace have rejected a bid from Tottenham for defender Marc Guehi thought to be about £70m.

The England international, who attracted interest from Newcastle in the summer, has 18 months left on his contract with Palace.

He has made 23 appearances and scored three goals in the Premier League this season as Palace find themselves 12th – three points above Tottenham in 14th.

Spurs are not expected to increase their bid for the 24-year-old in this window.

Palace turned down four bids from Newcastle for Guehi in the summer, with the final offer worth up to £65m.

Chelsea are also understood to have Guehi on a list of defensive targets, despite selling him to Palace for £18m in 2021.

Palace have just three fit centre-backs after Trevoh Chalobah was recalled from his loan spell by Chelsea and Chadi Riad sustained a long-term knee injury.

The club looked into signing Portugal’s Tiago Djalo, but they needed Juventus to recall the 24-year-old from his loan spell at Porto before he could join the Eagles.

Meanwhile, injury-hit Spurs are in the search of defensive reinforcements despite pipping Wolves to the loan signing of Lens defender Kevin Danso on Sunday.

Romanian centre-back Radu Dragusin sustained a knee injury in their Europa League win over Elfsborg on Thursday to join Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie on the injury list.

There are reports Spurs have looked at other central defenders, including Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

Tottenham have been approached for comment.

  • EPL: Crystal Palace pile on more pain for Man Utd

EPL: Crystal Palace pile on more pain for Man Utd

Manchester United suffered their fifth home defeat in six Premier League games as Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half double gave Crystal Palace their fourth victory in six seasons at Old Trafford.

As Marcus Rashford prepares to leave for Aston Villa, United head coach Ruben Amorim chose to leave out £100m-worth of attacking talent in Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee and instead use Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine.

Despite a bright start, the experiment didn’t work and Palace were looking dangerous before Eberechi Eze, who was supposed to be missing the game due to a foot injury, came on as a substitute and floated an excellent 64th-minute free-kick deep into the penalty area.

Maxence Lacroix’s header came back off the bar but with Andre Onana at full stretch, the Cameroon international keeper was unable to prevent Mateta turning the bouncing ball into an empty net.

Mateta took his Premier League tally to 10 for the season – and six in five games – when he tapped home Daniel Munoz’s low cross in the final minute.

A disappointing day got worse for the hosts as central defender Lisandro Martinez was stretchered off in tears after suffering what appeared to be a serious knee injury following a tangle with Ismaila Sarr.

The result meant Palace have won three successive Premier League away games for the first time since 2019 and extended their recent impressive recent record away from Selhurst Park. Oliver Glasner’s side have now collected 16 points on their travels since the beginning of December, more than any other top flight side.

United meanwhile slipped back to 13th place, having still failed to record successive league wins under Amorim.

United have also now lost seven of their first 13 home league matches this season – their joint-most at this stage of a league campaign and matching a mark set in 1893-94.

  • EPL: Mateta stuns Tottenham as Palace claim first win

EPL: Mateta stuns Tottenham as Palace claim first win

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first-half strike clinched Crystal Palace’s first Premier League win of the season as they edged lacklustre Tottenham.

After being reinstated to the starting line-up, the Frenchman broke the deadlock after Spurs defender Micky van de Ven was easily dispossessed deep in his own half and, following a scramble in the box, Mateta powered home his second goal of the season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side responded well after falling behind and Van de Ven’s spinning effort from a corner deflected off the thigh of team-mate Brennan Johnson before bouncing off the post.

In the final stages of the first half, Palace keeper Dean Henderson was finally called into action as he produced a wonderful, fingertip save to deny James Maddison on his 200th top-flight appearance.

After some fine work from Johnson early in the second half, Dejan Kulusevski was unable to level, while Palace’s Eberechi Eze squeezed the ball under Guglielmo Vicario, but the offside flag was rightly raised.

England forward Eze was a constant thorn in Spurs’ side and incensed when a penalty was not awarded after he was pulled down in the area.

Substitute Richarlison could then only smile at the Palace crowd when he poorly failed to make contact on Pedro Porro’s dangerous ball into the six-yard box.

At the other end, Adam Wharton almost scored his first Palace goal with a wonderful right-footed effort from outside of the box, but Vicario was equal to it.

A desperate Spurs continued to push forward in search of an equaliser but the home defence, who have kept one clean sheet this season, stood firm to lift themselves out of the bottom three.
