EPL: Liverpool boost title hopes after Crystal Palace win

Liverpool boosted their hopes of catching Manchester City in the Premier League as they mixed early class with late resilience to hold off Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Less than 24 hours after league leaders City dropped points for the first time since October, Jurgen Klopp’s side were sharp and ruthless early on to take the game away from their hosts.

The intensity of their press and crisp use of the ball overwhelmed Palace and Virgil van Dijk rose to deliver a bullet header for their opener before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain finished a sweeping team move for their second.

Palace, though, eventually offered moments of warning, with Liverpool keeper Alisson forced to save well from Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta before Conor Gallagher glanced a header wide with the opening attack of the second half.

They finally broke through when the ever-willing Mateta raced onto Jeffrey Schlupp’s superb through ball and unselfishly squared for Odsonne Edouard to tap into an empty net.

It prompted nervy moments for Klopp’s side as Joachim Andersen drilled an effort wide and Olise went close with a late lob.

But Fabinho whipped home a penalty after Diogo Jota was felled in the box and a spot-kick was awarded after the VAR suggested referee Kevin Friend should revise his initial decision not to penalise Palace.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker said the decision was not a penalty “in a million years” but it helped secure the victory for Klopp’s side, who have taken maximum league points from the fixtures missed by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane while they play in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tottenham boost top-four hopes after Palace win

Tottenham scored twice in two first-half minutes to set up a victory over Crystal Palace and keep up the pressure on the Premier League top four.

Harry Kane opened the scoring with his second goal in as many games, before Lucas Moura doubled their lead with a powerful header from close range.

Palace, who had asked the Premier League to postpone the game because of a Covid-19 outbreak, which included a positive test for manager Patrick Vieira, never got going in north London.

With Vieira self-isolating, assistant manager Osian Roberts took charge of the team, which had to play for nearly an hour with 10 men.

Their talisman Wilfried Zaha felt aggrieved about his sending off for two bookable offences in the first half, before Son Heung-min sealed the win with a third for Tottenham after the break.

Spurs are unbeaten in six league games under Antonio Conte and are six points behind fourth-place Arsenal with three games in hand, while Palace are 12th in the table.

AFCON deserves greater respect and coverage – Vieira

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira says the African Cup of Nations deserves greater respect from Europe.

The tournament will kickoff in Cameroon in January and run for a month.

Vieira said, “I respect and I understand the passion and importance of those players to go and represent their country. I will never stop any players going to the Africa Cup of Nations. I believe that competition has to be more respected because this competition is as important as the European Championship.

“With Senegal, I don’t think people understand [Sadio] Mane or Cheikhou Kouyate not representing their nation.

“If there was more coverage people will understand how important it is for the African continent.”

  • Awards deserved at Crystal Palace for Gallagher deal – Morrison

Awards deserved at Crystal Palace for Gallagher deal – Morrison

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison has hailed the club’s recruitment over their loan deal of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Goalscorer Gallagher was again outstanding for victory against Everton on Sunday.

Gallagher has been directly involved in 41% of Palace’s goals in the Premier League – the highest proportion for a team by any English player in the competition this term.

And his work-rate has been impressive. The 11.2km he covered against Everton was the most of any Palace player, as were his 20 sprints and 347 intensive runs.

“Whoever brought him to this football club deserves an award,” Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Talking about his wonder goal in the 93rd minute past Jordan Pickford, Morrison added: “What a finish. He wins the ball, the bend into the top corner past England’s number one is fantastic, this kid’s a big, big player for Crystal Palace.”

Fred strikes to give Rangnick winning start at Man Utd

Manchester United defeats Crystal Palace as Fred’s goal gives new manager Ralf Rangnick a winning start at Old Trafford.

A more energetic United display looked like going unrewarded against a dogged Crystal Palace outfit until Fred struck first-time from Mason Greenwood’s lay-off to send a superb 20-yard effort curling over Vicente Guaita and into the top corner.

It was only Fred’s second goal of the season – and the first time since the middle of September that United have recorded back-to-back league wins.

Until the Brazilian’s effort, Rangnick’s side created numerous decent chances, without really looking as though they were going to score and Guaita would probably have saved an Alex Telles free-kick that skimmed the bar had it been on target.

Indeed Palace, who were looking to win for a third successive season at Old Trafford, came close themselves when Jordan Ayew turned James Tomkins header across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the far post.

The victory meant that Rangnick emulated three of United’s other four new managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 by winning his first match at the helm, with Louis van Gaal the only man to fail.

Gerrard’s Villa earn vital win at Crystal Palace

Steven Gerrard secured his second win as Aston Villa manager with a 2-1 victory over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

After wildly celebrating grabbing all three points late on against Brighton a week ago, the former Liverpool captain was again jubilant when Matt Targett put Villa ahead with a low drive through a crowd of bodies from Ashley Young’s corner on 15 minutes.

As Palace tried to salvage something in the closing stages of the second half, John McGinn curled a beautiful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to double the visitors’ lead against the run of play.

Palace managed to snatch a late consolation through Marc Guehi in injury time but it was not enough to deny Villa.

The travelling Villa support were treated to a confident performance in bitterly cold conditions in south London, with McGinn, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings all having chances for the visitors in the first half after Targett’s opener.

Palace should have opened the scoring through Wilfried Zaha after the forward jinked past his marker on the edge of the Villa box but his left-footed effort was dragged just wide of the far post.

The Eagles saw a great opportunity to equalise after the break denied when referee Michael Salisbury blew his whistle for a foul by Marvelous Nakamba on Zaha and missed the advantage Christian Benteke and Conor Gallagher had created.

Villa almost played out the final quarter of the game with 10 men as substitute Douglas Luiz was shown a red card for a challenge on Cheikhou Kouyate, but it was downgraded to a yellow after Salisbury consulted the pitchside monitor.

The win moves Villa up into 11th place, level on points with Palace in 10th.

  • I don’t see myself as EPL player – Crystal Palace defender

I don’t see myself as EPL player – Crystal Palace defender

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell feels he’s not yet a Premier League player.

In the matchday programme for Crystal Palace v Aston Villa, Mitchell makes this attitude abundantly clear.

“I don’t want to tell myself I’m a Premier League player,” he says. “I don’t want to do that to myself yet, until I’ve played half of the games that these guys in the changing room have played. I don’t want to see myself like that.

“Literally, you could play 50 games and then never play in the Premier League again.

“I want to feel like I’m always working for the next 50, and then the next 50. I don’t want to ever say: ‘You know what, I’ve actually done it now.’”

EPL: How you beat Man City… – Zaha

Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha was delighted with victory at Manchester City.

Zaha and Conor Gallagher struck for the visitors, which had Aymeric Laporte sent off.

Zaha says Crystal Palace succeeded in stopping Manchester City playing as they secured a clean-sheet victory at the Etihad.

“It was just about getting in their faces and not letting them play,” he said in his post-match interview. “We know how good they are, but today was about us not letting them play, and showing them what we can do. That’s what we did.

“I feel like we’re a threat going forwards, but the difference you see now is that we keep the ball from the back. We keep the ball around the pitch and we make our chances. We’re now exploiting the talent we have up-front and all around the pitch.

“I scuffed it [for the opening goal] but a goal is a goal. I was just buzzing that I saw it go in, and that’s the way you want it to start. I was happy.”

  • Crystal Palace stun Man City at Etihad Stadium

Crystal Palace stun Man City at Etihad Stadium

Wilfried Zaha became the first player to score 50 top-flight goals for Crystal Palace as 10-man Manchester City suffered a shock defeat at Etihad Stadium.

Zaha struck after just six minutes when Conor Gallagher robbed Aymeric Laporte inside his own half before Gallagher wrapped up the points when he fired home two minutes from time.

Laporte was red-carded by referee Andre Marriner in first-half stoppage time when he committed a professional foul by bringing down Zaha 35 yards from the City goal.

Even a man down, the hosts remained a goal threat and Gabriel Jesus thought he had levelled when he turned home Phil Foden’s superb far-post cross, only for video assistant referee Lee Mason to rule the England forward was offside in the build-up.

City fans were infuriated by what they saw as time-wasting from Palace, which started in the opening period, and manager Pep Guardiola was less than impressed with what he saw too, judging by the number of times he spoke to fourth official Anthony Taylor.

But Palace were a danger on the break, with Jordan Ayew and Gallagher both wasting decent chances before Gallagher finished Michael Olise’s lay-off to give Patrick Vieira’s men victory and end a frustrating run of four consecutive Premier League draws.

  • I’m really lucky to be in charge at Palace – Vieira

I’m really lucky to be in charge at Palace – Vieira

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira is excited about the team he takes to former club Arsenal on Monday night.

Vieira returns to Arsenal for the first time as a manager nearly six years after beginning his senior managerial career at MLS side New York City.

The 45-year-old has also managed at Nice in France’s Ligue 1.

“Going back from my Manchester City time (as Elite Development Squad manager) and where I am today it has been up and down,” Vieira said. “But overall I am really pleased about the journey I’ve had so far.

“What I really wanted was to come back to the Premier League to manage and I’m really lucky to be in a good football club.

“There is the foundation to express myself as a manager and I want to grow with the football club.

“This football club is really ambitious, as I am as a manager, and both of us can achieve good things here.

“The club want to be bigger and challenge for bigger things, and we are in a process of developing something quite interesting.”
