Mane scores 100th Liverpool goal in Palace win

Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season after Sadio Mane scored his 100th goal for the club in a victory against Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s side created numerous chances against a resilient Palace before Mane pounced on a rebound at the back post in the first half.

Mohamed Salah doubled their lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when he smashed home a flick-on from a corner, before Naby Keita’s late curling strike made it 3-0.

Liverpool were wasteful in the first half as Diogo Jota fired over the bar from a few yards out in a glorious position, while Thiago and Jordan Henderson were also denied by keeper Vicente Guaita.

Palace had started brightly – hitting the post twice in as many minutes as Liverpool failed to clear their lines in the box – but the hosts’ persistence eventually paid off.

In the end it was a comfortable victory that capped a good week for Liverpool at Anfield, following their dramatic 3-2 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

And it means they go top of the table with four wins from their opening five games, while visitors Palace remain outside the top 10.

EPL: Crystal Palace beat Tottenham as Tanganga sees red

Odsonne Edouard scored twice on his debut as Crystal Palace claimed their first win of the season to end 10-man Tottenham’s 100% Premier League start.

Wilfried Zaha set the Eagles on their way, rolling in from the spot after Ben Davies was penalised for handball, before substitute Edouard added a second and third late on.

French forward Edouard, a deadline-day signing from Celtic, introduced himself to the Selhurst Park faithful in fine fashion, turning in Zaha’s cross a minute after coming on and then steering in Conor Gallagher’s pass.

The result moves Palace up to 11th in the table and it was no more than they deserved after a dominant display against the league leaders.

The hosts were well on top even before Japhet Tanganga’s dismissal, with the Spurs defender collecting two yellow cards in the space of five minutes before the hour mark.

Patrick Vieira earns first point as Crystal Palace manager

Brentford maintained an unbeaten start to their first Premier League season with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles had the better of the chances in Patrick Vieira’s first home game in charge, with debutant Conor Gallagher hitting the inside of the post early on.

Captain James McArthur then saw a curling effort from the edge of the box tipped away by David Raya after the break as the Eagles pushed for a breakthrough.

The best opportunity for Thomas Frank’s Brentford, who beat Arsenal in their opening game last weekend, came when Bryan Mbeumo’s free-kick from out wide clipped the top of the crossbar.

  • Ex-Arsenal captain, Patrick Vieira appointed Crystal Palace boss

Crystal Palace have appointed Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year deal, the English Premier League (EPL) club said on Sunday.

The former Arsenal captain replaces Roy Hodgson, who stepped down at the end of last season after four years at the helm.

Vieira has signed a contract until the summer of 2024 and accepts his third role in senior management.

“I am really excited to have this opportunity to return to the Premier League, and manage this great football club, as we begin a new chapter together,” Vieira told the club homepage.

“It is a project that is really appealing to me, having spoken a lot with the chairman and sporting director about their ambition and plans for the whole club, including the academy.

“The club has fantastic foundations in place after many years in the Premier League, and I hope we can make further improvements and continue to drive the club forward.

Most recently the 45-year-old was in charge of Nice, but he was sacked by the Ligue 1 side in December following a poor run of form.

During two and a half seasons with the club dubbed the Eaglets, Vieira led them to seventh and fifth-place finishes.

But the latter occurred after the 2019/2020 campaign was curtailed early due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As a player, the former France international became a household name during a nine-year stay with Arsenal under Arsene Wenger where he helped them win three Premier League titles.

He captained the Gunners to an unprecedented unbeaten league campaign.

Aguero thrilled to play and score in Man City win

Manchester City could clinch the Premier League title on Sunday after two goals in the space of 83 seconds saw off a stubborn Crystal Palace.

City will secure a third title in four seasons if second-placed Manchester United lose at home to Liverpool.

After a scrappy first half at Selhurst Park, Sergio Aguero thumped City ahead with a clinical finish before Ferran Torres drilled in a low shot.

That ended the resistance of Palace, who stay in 13th place.

Afterwards, Aguero said: “Finally I could play, I’m so happy. It was a long time that I hadn’t played 90 minutes. The goal was good because maybe we can win the Premier League.

“We wait for tomorrow. Every game is difficult, but we wait for tomorrow. Of course if Liverpool win it’s better.”

On his goal, he said: “Always [Benjamin] Mendy tries to pass to me. All I needed in the box was one touch or two touches. Finally I got the goal. I’m so happy about that.”

On Tuesday’s game against Paris St-Germain, Aguero said: “Always I’m ready. I’m feeling good, my knee is so good. I just wait for the opportunity to play, like today. If I don’t play it doesn’t matter. I want to be with the team-mates. Of course every player wants to play, but we’ll see.”

And on receiving a statue, he concluded: “When the club told me about that I told them I don’t want anything. I prefer to wait until the end. If the club want to do something, then thank you.”

Senior man Iheanacho seals Leicester comeback win

Kelechi Iheanacho scores, assist one in Leicester comeback win against Crystal Palace as the Foxes moved closer to Champions League qualification.

Wilfried Zaha put the visitors ahead after only 12 minutes, with a first-time finish following a fine through ball from Eberechi Eze.

But Timothy Castagne equalised for the Foxes within five minutes of the second half by firing the ball into the roof of the net after being set up by Kelechi Iheanacho.

Palace nearly retook the lead but a superb sliding challenge from Jonny Evans denied Christian Benteke what would have been a tap-in into an unguarded goal.

That missed chance proved crucial as Iheanacho scored his 12th goal in nine games, when he cut inside on to his left foot and blasted the ball past goalkeeper Vicente Guaita for a late winner.

The result leaves the Foxes third in the Premier League, but takes them seven points clear of fifth-placed West Ham with five matches to go.

Leicester, who have also reached the FA Cup final for the first time since 1969, have only played in the European Cup or Champions League once, reaching the quarter-finals in 2016-17 after winning the Premier League the previous season.

Their run-in includes games against Manchester United in second, Chelsea in fourth and Tottenham in seventh.

  • I was an Arsenal reject – Eberechi Eze

I was an Arsenal reject – Eberechi Eze

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze admits it was tough being rejected by Arsenal as a junior.

The 22 year-old has impressed since making a £17million move to Palace from QPR on a five-year deal in August.

However success has not always come easy to the Londoner, who thought he would make it big with the Gunners when he signed for them before his 16th birthday.

“I got scouted by a few clubs and that’s when I first went to Arsenal,” he said.

“At a young age, it was hard, especially being released. Me and my mum cried, everyone was so upset – that’s all you know at that age.

“But looking back at it now, that’s the start of my journey and I’m grateful to God that’s how it went. If it wasn’t for that, I may not have got the resilience, bravery, to go and be who I want to be elsewhere. It’s shaped me to be who I am today.”

EPL: Liverpool thrash Crystal Palace 7-0 to move top

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored twice as Liverpool hit seven past Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park to go six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Firmino, Salah, Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson were all on the scoresheet as the champions overwhelmed Roy Hodgson’s side with a stunning away performance.

And the Senegal international then doubled the advantage in the 35th minute after a superb turn, before Firmino tapped home to round off a brilliant counter-attack on the stroke of half-time.

Captain Henderson curled in a fourth just after the restart before Firmino added his second after good work from Salah.

Salah headed home a sixth with nine minutes remaining, before doubling his personal tally with a brilliant individual effort moments later.

The Egyptian forward rounded off a brilliant team performance, as a scintillating Liverpool ensured they would be top at Christmas for the third consecutive season.

Eberechi Eze shines as Crystal Palace thrash Leeds

Eberechi Eze registered his first Crystal Palace goal with a sublime free-kick as Roy Hodgson’s side thrashed Leeds United in an entertaining match at Selhurst Park.

Scott Dann headed in Eze’s corner to put Palace ahead after 12 minutes, before £19.5m summer signing Eze, 22, curled his set-piece expertly into the top corner.

But Bamford, who endured a difficult loan spell with Palace in 2015, took his next chance just as well, controlling Mateusz Klich’s header with his chest before firing into the bottom corner.

Palace’s two-goal advantage was restored before half-time as Helder Costa conceded an own-goal in attempting to block Patrick van Aanholt’s cross from the left.

Pascal Struijk headed narrowly wide and Ezgjan Alioski was denied as Leeds chased a second-half response, but Jordan Ayew put the result beyond doubt with Palace’s fourth on 70 minutes.

Crystal Palace moved up to sixth with victory, three points behind leaders Southampton, as Leeds dropped to 14th.

  • Wolves beat Crystal Palace to climb to third in EPL

Wolves beat Crystal Palace to climb to third in EPL

Wolverhampton Wanderers moved up to third in the English Premier League (EPL) after beating Crystal Palace 2-0 on Friday.

It was all thanks to goals from on-loan teenage wingback Rayan Ait-Nouri and Daniel Podence.

France under-21 international Ait-Nouri gave the hosts the lead in the 18th minute after latching on to a clearance and driving a bouncing shot into the far corner.

It was his first goal in senior football on his Premier League debut.

Wolves midfielder Leander Dendoncker then hit the post with a powerful shot before Portuguese winger Podence made it 2-0.

He met Pedro Neto’s cross from the right with a superb cushioned volley in the 27th minute.

Crystal Palace had several VAR decisions go against them, with a Michy Batshuayi goal disallowed and a penalty kick award overturned, both for offside.

Wolves substitute Adama Traore had a great chance to put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute.

But he fired a powerful shot straight at CrystalPalace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita who parried it away to safety.

Crystal Palace suffered a further setback when Luka Milivojevic was given his marching orders in the 87th minute after a review showed a nasty foul on Joao Moutinho.

The win puts Wolves on 13 points from seven games.

They trail leaders Everton and second-placed Liverpool on goal difference.

Crystal Palace are ninth on 10 points.

Podence, whose only other league goal for Wolves also came at home to Crystal Palace, praised fellow goalscorer Ait-Nouri.

The player joined on a season-long loan, with the Midlands club having an option to buy, from Ligue 1 Angers earlier this month.

“He has a great left foot. He has a lot of quality.

“He showed everyone what he can do (and) we are here to help him,” Podence said, adding that Wolves would not be getting carried away by their lofty league position.

“We play game-by-game. We are improving since the first game. We had a difficult pre-season. We can do better, and we are trying to be perfect,” he added.
