Chelsea hammer Crystal Palace with second half goals

Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 4-0 at home in the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday.

Ben Chilwell marked his league debut for the Blues by scoring a goal and creating another for fellow defender Kurt Zouma, before Jorginho sealed the win with two penalty kicks.

Crystal Palace had stifled Chelsea in a goalless first half but Chilwell punished them for a rare defensive error, firing home from close range in the 50th minute.

That was after Mamadou Sakho fluffed a clearance, allowing Cesar Azpilicueta to line up a cross.

Chelsea doubled their lead in the 66th minute when the visitors failed to clear a corner-kick.

Zouma rose above everyone else in the box to meet a cross by Chilwell and send a header past Vicente Guaita.

Jorginho made sure of the win when he converted two penalty kicks in the space of five minutes late in the game.

Chelsea coach Frank Lampard will be as happy with his team’s first clean sheet of the season as the four goals they scored.

Lampard made six changes to the team which salvaged a 3-3 draw after being 3-0 behind at West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

Four of them were at the back as he gave league debuts to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and left-back Chilwell.

  • Why Ghana recalled Crystal Palace star Schlupp

Why Ghana recalled Crystal Palace star Schlupp

Ghana coach CK Akonnor has revealed the current form of Crystal Palace midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp makes him a difficult choice to ignore, leading to his inclusion in the Black Stars’ squad for their upcoming friendly fixture against Mali in October.

Having not played for Ghana since featuring in a friendly tie against Mauritania in March 2019, the 27-year-old is enjoying a fine run in the Premier League this season, having had starting berths in The Eagles’ opening two games.

“He [Schlupp] is somebody who brings force and speed into the game, speed of thought and we have seen what he has done with Crystal Palace in the past, currently in good shape and they won recently against Manchester United where he played a major role,” Akonnor said after unveiling his squad, as reported by his club’s official website.

“I had a personal chat with him when I was there, one on one, he told me his problems and I think once we are able to give him that necessary chance and respect, he deserves, why not, he is here and most of these guys are in to prove a point.

“Don’t forget this is a friendly match and I think before November, we must know exactly those who can help us in the qualifiers and that is why all these opportunities have come for these guys.”

  • Liverpool thrash Palace to move within two points of title

Liverpool moved to within touching distance of their first title in 30 years as Crystal Palace were brutally dismissed behind closed doors at Anfield.

Manchester City must now win at Chelsea on Thursday to further delay the inevitability of Liverpool’s coronation as Premier League champions.

After the goalless Merseyside derby at Everton on Sunday, they shook off the cobwebs in their first home game since the campaign was halted because of the coronavirus pandemic to beat Palace with almost embarrassing ease.

Anfield may have been home to only around 300 people but Liverpool played with familiar intensity, although Palace’s cause was hardly helped by the early loss of Wilfried Zaha to injury.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was on target with a superb free-kick after 22 minutes and Mohamed Salah effectively settled the contest with a cool finish from Fabinho’s brilliant pass just before the break.

And Fabinho produced something even more special in the 54th minute when he drilled a magnificent rising right-foot finish past Wayne Hennessey from more than 30 yards.

Salah turned provider after 69 minutes with a slide-rule pass to Sadio Mane, who finished with precision as Liverpool’s superiority was stamped all over this game.

  • EPL: Resurgent Everton move seventh after Palace win

EPL: Resurgent Everton move seventh after Palace win

Everton stretched their unbeaten run to five games as a 3-1 victory over out-of-form Crystal Palace moved them up to seventh in the Premier League.

The hosts dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead when Bernard volleyed in Theo Walcott’s superb cross.

But Palace, without a win so far in 2020, fought back after the break and equalised when keeper Jordan Pickford allowed Christian Benteke’s low strike to go under his body.

Everton then had to withstand a spell of pressure from the rejuvenated visitors but restored their lead when Richarlison ran through the Palace defence and slotted into the bottom corner.

Pickford saved superbly from Benteke’s close-range header to protect the Toffees’ lead, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed victory when he prodded in after Richarlison’s header had hit the crossbar.

The win leaves Everton just one point behind fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand.

Crystal Palace remain six points above the relegation zone in 14th place, but all of those below Roy Hodgson’s side now have a game in hand.

  • Palace, Man City share points in dramatic final minutes

Palace, Man City share points in dramatic final minutes

Manchester City’s grip on the Premier League got even weaker as Crystal Palace earned a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium following a dramatic final 10 minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne hit the bar early on with a brilliant 30-yard free kick, but Palace scored against the run of play as Cenk Tosun headed home at the far post from a corner, the visitors’ first and only effort of the first half.

City had a penalty correctly overturned by VAR in the second half following a Jairo Riedewald handball, before sub Gabriel Jesus curled a beauty for Aguero to convert at the far post.

Aguero got his second and what looked to be the winner with a fine header (87), but Palace refused to feel sorry for themselves as Wilfried Zaha forced a Fernandinho own goal (90).

The result means City are 13 points behind Liverpool, who have two games in hand, the first of which comes against Manchester United on Super Sunday. Palace, meanwhile, are ninth, four points off the top six.

  • EPL: Ayew earns Palace point against 10-man Arsenal

EPL: Ayew earns Palace point against 10-man Arsenal

Jordan Ayew’s deflected equaliser earned Crystal Palace a point at home against Arsenal, who had goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sent off by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Captain Aubameyang had put his side ahead with a well-worked team goal as Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the first half.

But Ayew brought Palace level after the break, his goal-bound effort leaving Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno with little chance after bouncing off David Luiz.

Aubameyang was then sent off following a lunging tackle which caught Max Meyer on the left ankle, VAR overturning the initial yellow card he was awarded by referee Paul Tierney.

This fixture had heralded 28 goals in the previous seven meetings between the two sides but little could separate them this time around, though both James Tomkins and Nicolas Pepe went close to winners for their respective teams.

The Eagles were themselves lucky to end the match with 11 players with Tomkins narrowly avoiding a red card after a late challenge on Gabriel Martinelli, in what was a feisty first London derby of 2020.

Arsenal manager Arteta – who was not even born when Palace boss Roy Hodgson started his managerial career – remains without an away win in the league since taking over as manager on 20 December.

Palace, meanwhile, remain ninth in the Premier League table, one place above the Gunners.

  • Classy Ayew goal earns Palace late win at West Ham [Watch]

Jordan Ayew scored a sensational 90th-minute winner to help Crystal Palace come from behind and beat West Ham at Selhurst Park.

The striker danced through the Hammers defence on the edge of the box and then brilliantly beat goalkeeper Roberto with a calm chip.

West Ham had taken the lead through Robert Snodgrass before Cheikhou Kouyate equalised against his former club.

Match-winner Ayew set up Kouyate’s goal with a knock-down which allowed the midfielder to sweep home a volley from seven yards.

Palace climb up to eighth with the win but West Ham fall to 17th, just a point above the relegation zone as pressure increases again on manager Manuel Pellegrini.

  • Gambling: Premier League player loses N21m in one night

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend says he once lost £46,000(N21.8m) in one night but being charged by the FA for betting “probably saved me as a human being”.

Townsend, 28, says a mixture of an addictive personality and boredom while on numerous loan spells away from Tottenham contributed to his gambling.

In 2013, he was fined £18,000 and given a ban by the Football Association for breaching betting regulations.

“It snapped me back to reality,” Townsend told the Players’ Tribune.

“I really feared for my whole career. When the thing that you love in life can be taken away from you, it changes your perspective.”

Townsend says, while on loan at Birmingham, he was in a hotel in Blackpool the night before the Championship play-off semi-final in May 2012 and could not fall asleep.

Instead, he kept “checking my phone, placing more bets”.

“I’m probably the only lad in history to lose £46,000 lying in bed on a Wednesday night in Blackpool,” he added.

Townsend admits he was thankful to the FA for realising he was “just a stupid kid who made a mistake” after being caught by the governing body.

He began having counselling for his gambling addiction.

“That not only saved my football career, it also probably saved me as a human being,” explained the former England international.

“It opened me up to the possibility that actually talking to somebody about what I was going through was OK.

“I’m not telling this story for the whole world. I’m telling it for the people out there who have had their knocks – for those who have been misunderstood, depressed, lost, and especially the ones who have battled addiction.”

  • EPL: Crystal Palace move to fifth after home win

Jeffrey Schlupp struck in the second half as 10-man Crystal Palace beat Bournemouth to move up to fifth in the Premier League.

The hosts lost Mamadou Sakho early in the first half when he was sent off for a high challenge on Adam Smith.

Bournemouth dominated possession from that point but failed to make the most of their man advantage as they rarely tested Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal.

Philip Billing hit a shot straight at Guaita at the end of the first half, while Dominic Solanke just failed to connect with a dangerous low ball shortly after the restart.

It appeared as though the first Premier League match to be broadcast on Amazon Prime would end goalless, but instead the hosts snatched victory when Schlupp, on as a first-half substitute for the injured Patrick van Aanholt, weaved his way through the Bournemouth defence before tucking home a low shot.

After a run of five games without victory, Palace have now won their last two having also beaten Burnley 2-0 at the weekend.

Defeat for Bournemouth was their fourth in a row and leaves them in 12th.

  • Crystal Palace fight back to draw at Emirates

Crystal Palace fight back to draw at Emirates

Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka was involved in an angry confrontation with his own supporters as Crystal Palace came from two goals down to earn a point in an ill-tempered atmosphere at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were two up inside nine minutes as Sokratis Papastathopoulos and David Luiz took advantage of poor defending at corners – but it was all downhill from there for Arsenal and manager Unai Emery.

Palace pulled one back before half-time when Luka Milivojevic scored from the spot following a VAR intervention after referee Martin Atkinson initially shown Wilfried Zaha a yellow card for diving in a tangle with Calum Chambers.

And Palace were level seven minutes after the break when Jordan Ayew headed in James McArthur’s cross at the far post.

The game turned toxic just after the hour when Xhaka was substituted to roars of delight from Arsenal’s fans, the newly-appointed captain reacting angrily to jeers at his slow departure by waving and cupping his ear sarcastically to the home support, exchanging words before taking off his shirt and disappearing down the tunnel.

Arsenal’s frustration was summed up when a late strike by Sokratis was ruled out for a foul by Chambers on Gary Cahill.
