Gov Umahi denies placating notorious cult group with N3m

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi on Monday said he did not give N3 million to placate notorious cult groups allegedly terrorising residents of the state.

Umahi said this when the 13 Local Government Area Chairmen, Coordinators of Development Centres, with their Management Committee members, among other political appointees, paid him a solidarity visit at the Government House, Abakiliki.

He dismissed the report in the social media that he gave the money to the groups through his security aide.

He said that contrary to the report, he had ordered a manhunt for members of the groups.

“How can a warrior such as me bribe cultists, to do what with the money?

“The duty of political leaders and the citizens is to give me the names of the cultists because I will give them a bad Christmas celebration.

“I am searching for them whether they are in government or not because the matter is that of terrorism and would be handled at Abuja,” the governor said.

He urged the political leaders to discontinue with their plan to recall some members of the state House of Assembly and National Assembly, who stayed back in Peoples Democratic Party after his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We would allow the people who did not defect to the APC with us to exist in peace and you should not victimise them.

“You should not close the door behind them because they will come back but ensure that you enjoy your palliative in their presence to make them salivate,” Umahi said.

He thanked them for their solidarity and sharing his political ideology, saying that the dividends of the defection had yet to be felt.

“When we started this struggle in 2014, we were not up to five per cent of the mammoth crowd we are witnessing presently.

“You then imagine what will happen presently that we have the grassroots, structures at the state and national levels.

“Several personalities higher than myself have defected without noise, so one wonders why this particular defection is generating so much noise,” Umahi said.

He directed that each civil servant and political office holder in the state be given two bags of five-kilogramme of rice and N10,000 for the Christmas celebration.

He ordered the council chairmen to source funds to carry out the directive.

“Before I could know what was happening, they started heating and matcheting me with cutlass , saying that I was the one that carried the gun and shot the guy that day. I told them it’s not me and I have not carried gun before in my life.

“They said it’s not true that I’m there one. When they noticed that people have started noticing them, they bundled me into one of the bike and zoomed off and took me to the bush where they dug ground and put me and covered me with sand up to my chest. I was inside there suffocating, shouting before they heard footsteps of people coming and they ran away’’

This is not the first time they have been attacking us. The community is feeling bad and sad on the attack of Sunday Orji. We’re telling the government to intervene”, he said.

Police spokesman, Loveth Oda said that nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent killings and violence in the affected communities.

  • Ebonyi cult clash claims two, Governor orders arrest of killers

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Wednesday ordered security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the recent bloody cult clash in Afikpo South local government area of the state.

This is even as the second persson was killed in the area on Wednesday morning in a reprisal attack.

It will be recalled that one Onu Ukpai Chima had been killed in Owutu community in the area on Sunday as two rival cult groups clashed in the area.

The killing allegedly led to the raid of hideouts of the cultists by Police on Tuesday night.

But after the Police left, a cousin of the late Chima, whose name was given as Ukegbu, reportedly went on a reprisal attack and killed one Raphael Chijioke allegged to be a member of the cult group that allegedly killed Chima.

“The killings in Afikpo south is not acceptable. If we can solve this problem once and for all, it will be good”.

“As the Governor of the state, I cannot take side. Security agents should go and do investigation and arrest whoever that is involved, get the person arrested and do proper investigation”.

“Take the people involved in the killings to court. I will sign any paper for execution, I will do it to prove a point in Afikpo south”.

The Governor said the killings have political undertones even as he rued the loss of lives in the clashes.

“What is going on in Afikpo south is not acceptable, it is not acceptable. These lives that are being lost are not chickens. I know very well, it is political squabbles. We have it so much in Ohaukwu but God has brought it down”.

“I have ordered a thorough and comprehensive investigations of the killings in Afikpo south and anybody is arrestable. This nonsense must stop! How can we continue to talk about killings in that place, it must stop! I need to be briefed on daily basis about this”, he said

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Afikpo South Local Government Council, Eni Uduma Chima has condemned the cult activities leading to the death of Chima and Chijioke.

The Chairman in statement by Spokesman of the Council, Anderson Ozuma said he has made Statements/Reports to appropriate authorities in his efforts to contain the escalation of cult activities and violence in Owutu Edda.

“He has received and forwarded reports/information of the whereabouts of most of the cultists who perpetrated that reprehensible act of 3rd May 2020”.

“He volunteered to personally join operatives of the Anti-kidnapping (A.K.) Squad of the Nigeria Police Force in the night of 5th May 2020 alongside other Stakeholders in security, which movement led to the arrest of 4 suspected cultists in the morning of 6th May 2020 who are alleged to be involved in the killing of late Ukpai”.

“He was alleged to have shot and killed one Raphael Chijioke suspected to be a member of the cult group that allegedly killed his own cousin on 3rd May 2020”.

  • Cultism remains greatest challenge in Ogun – CP

Cultism remains greatest challenge in Ogun – CP

Ogun Police Commissioner, Kenneth Ebrimson, on Saturday said that cultism remained the greatest challenge facing the state police command.

Ebrimson said this in Abeokuta when students body in the state led by Azeez Adeyemi, Special Adviser to Gov. Dapo Abiodun on Student Matters, paid him a courtesy call.

He intimated the students’ representatives that it was important to always preach against cultism, saying that when two cult groups clashed, innocent people were often affected.

“I need your assistance, I need your cooperation, particularly in the area of fight against cultism.

“That is the greatest challenge we have in this state; not armed robbery, not kidnapping but cultism and it thrives in tertiary institutions.

“Cultism has no advantage, it is just a mere group of people trying to have rival supremacy over things that are not worth their lives,” he said.

According to him, cultism is mother of kidnapping, armed robbery, drug peddling. Cultism is the major cause of every violent crime in the society.

“Tell me where you have seen cultists clash without wanton destruction of lives and property?

“There is no society that is free of crime. So I want to tell you that the police is the only friend you have.

“No matter how bitter you feel, you must locate a police station to lodge your complaints in the first instance.

“So, please, I need your cooperation and I think from time to time, we will be having this type of platform to enable us vent our grievances,” he said.

The police commissioner commended the state government for initiating the students-police relations meeting, adding that there had never been bad relationship between the police and the students.

He pleaded with the students to erase bad impression about the police from their minds, saying that it was the duty of the police to guide and protect all citizens of the country.

Earlier, Raymond Ojo, the Global Vice President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), noted that the priority of student leadership was to defend the rights of Nigerian students.

Ojo decried the indiscriminate and unlawful assault and arrest of students by the police, saying that the attitude of the police should be checked and the bad eggs be fished out.

He urged the police authorities to always ensure that police vehicles were branded so that it would be easy for the public to report any officer involved in illegality.

Also speaking, Adeyemi noted that the meeting was facilitated by the state government to foster more relationship between police and students.

The special adviser to the governor appealed to the state police command to see Nigerian students as partners in progress and agent of peace.

  • Rate of kidnapping, banditry, cultism in Nigeria decreasing drastically – IGP

Rate of kidnapping, banditry, cultism in Nigeria decreasing drastically – IGP

The Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, on Thursday declared that the crime rate in the country has dropped drastically in comparison with two quarters ago.

According to him, banditry, kidnapping and cultism have decreased.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari urged the security agencies to keep up the good work towards achieving a near-zero crime rate in the country.

Adamu briefed State House correspondents at the end of security chiefs meeting with the President at the State House.

He also justified the current dialogue between bandits in the North East and the State governors and the security agencies.

This, he said, would bring peace to the area.

He pointed out that dialogue and negotiations were used by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to solve the militancy problem in the Niger Delta that resulted to the amnesty programme for the repented militants.

He said that the use of kinetic action sometimes does not solve a problem rather negotiation and dialogue bring peace.

He said,” We just finished security meeting and we have noticed within this quarter that the security situation in the country is stable, we make comparison of what has happened in the previous quarters and this quarter and we saw that there is tremendous decrease in kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and even acts of cultism.

“And you can see the situation in Northwest, banditry has reduced tremendously, kidnapping also has gone down and we have statistics to back it.

“And having noticed that, we have been charged by Mr. President to do more. He wants to see a near-zero crime society in the whole of the country. So we have been charged to do more than what we are doing now in fact, in the whole of the country.

“Recently, there have been series of peace initiatives especially the Tiv/Jukun crisis, the federal government came up with initiatives by bringing the leadership of the two states and their traditional rulers and we have been asked to support that initiative and see to it that dialogue succeeds and that there is peace between the Jukun and Tivs.

“We have also been charged to increase security along the pipelines to make sure that crude oil theft is stopped completely because the loss that the country is facing in that area is not tolerated. So we have been charged to increase our security activities in that direction to make sure that crude oil theft is stopped completely.”

On what was done differently to improve security situation in the present quarter, he said “What we have done apart from the peace initiative and the dialogues that we came up with through organization of security summit. If you remember we went to the Northwestern zone of this country, we sat down with the traditional rulers and all the governors and the leadership of Miyetti Allah and they identified some of the challenges that are fuelling kidnapping and banditry.

“Those challenges were looked into to the extent that the bandits and kidnappers have decided to release their captives and surrendered their arms, that has contributed and also those that have refused to accept the peace initiative, we have been able to identify their camps especially Abuja/Kaduna road and along Birnin Gwari Niger axis and we went to the camps of these kidnappers and we dislodged some of the camps.

“In fact, in the security briefing we gave specific numbers of the camps that we have destroyed and the casualties the bandits recorded as a result of that. So that has also made them to surrender and some of them relocated. We are following those that have relocated to know the new location and also engage them.”

He said that reduction of crime was noticeable in Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna States.

“For instance, in June, 2019, a total of one hundred and eleven (111) murder cases were reported nationally, while it
reduced to ninety-nine (99) in July and eighty (80) in August.

“One hundred and eighty-three (183) armed robbery incidents were reported in June, with the rate dropping to
one hundred and twenty-seven (127) in July and ninety-six (96) in August, 2019.

“Similar decline was noticed in the rate of kidnapping with one hundred and thirty-four (134) incidents recorded in June, which declined to one hundred
and twelve (112) in July and further declined to eighty-three (83) in August,” he said

Speaking further on peace initiatives, he said “When we are talking about peace initiative, there are a lot of things that we take into consideration, you give out something to get something. And this peace initiative has not started with the bandits in the North Western part of this country with the bandits.

“If you remember some years back we were having issues in the Niger Delta and those issues kinetic actions could not solve the problem until amnesty and peace initiative came up and what we had had in Niger Delta had gone.

“So, I think part of strategy to deal with challenges in terms of either security or war, there is peaceful negotiation too. So it is not that you are a bandit and on the course of the banditry you committed crime you must be punished when there is peace initiative going on. If you refused to accept the peace initiative of course you have to face the consequences.” he said

Asked if he was comparing the Niger Delta militant agitation to the killings by bandits in the North West, he said,” It is not like comparism per se but giving an example how a negotiation and dialogue can bring peace.

“Even in terms of war, you go into dialogue so as to achieve certain level of peace, that is what I am trying to say. So if dialogue can bring peace, why do you have to use force, that is what I am just trying to say.”

On the increasing car theft and burglary in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, he said,” Currently we have about 20 different points where we monitor on daily basis through CCTV Cameras within FCT and we are expanding it to cover the remaining areas.

“So one of the strategies to stop all this type of crime whether it is car theft or burglary or anything that has to do with theft in the city is the use of CCTV and constant patrol for prevention.”

  • Ebonyi communities go spiritual against cultism

Ebonyi communities go spiritual against cultism

Elders drawn from the 16 communities in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Thursday, congregated at the village square (Obodo Amananta) at the Ngbo/Izziah Cultural Centre and called on the gods of the land to deal decisively with anyone involved in cultism, sponsoring war and other social vices in the area.

Southern City News reports that penultimate week, some communities in the Ohaukwu LGA observed the disappearance of four youths and the killing of 10 persons by yet-to-be identified hoodlums.

Speaking during the ceremony at the cultural centre, the Chairman of the council, Clement Odah, said the announcement was to ensure lasting peace, adding that they were working to make the communities safe.

According to him, the elders of the clans and traditional rulers in the Ohaukwu LGA gathered to make a proclamation against anybody involved in cultism as well as promoting war and any form of bloodshed.

Odah said, “It is to mark the climax of peace and security in the Ohaukwu LGA. A lot of things have been done. We have called several meetings; we have set up a lot of structures; we have campaigned and worked very hard to make sure that Ohaukwu becomes the safest local government area in Ebonyi State.

“By the grace of God, apart from recent developments in the Agila/Ngbo axis, the local government area has become very peaceful. It is almost like a model. But we decided that we must test the sincerity of everybody.

“We called for this traditional and spiritual ceremony. This place is called Obodo Amanata. It is not a place you will come and tell lies. It is a place where every man’s honesty is tested.

“We have given proper warning. Not less than two months ago, we were singing it like a song. So, everybody is aware of it – the elders, traditional rulers and politicians. In fact, everybody is aware.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Ohaukwu Traditional Rulers’ Council, John Ogeh, noted that the spiritual exercise became necessary in order to rid the area of evil.

Ogeh, the traditional ruler of the Okposhi Eheku community, stated, “As elders, we have a way of doing things and what we have done here today is to cleanse our land of all forms of social vices. We warned the residents to desist from doing evil and that the communities would gather for this ceremony.”
