#EndSARS: Plateau Govt. reinstates 24-hour curfew

Gov Simon Lalong of Plateau, has reinstated the 24-hour curfew in Jos South and Jos North Local Government Areas, effective from 4p.m on Saturday till further notice.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the governor first imposed a 24-hour curfew on Tuesday, October 20, but relaxed it on Friday, October 23, after a meeting with critical stakeholders in the state.

Lalong, however, reinstated the lockdown in a statement issued to journalists on Saturday in Jos, following attacks on some warehouses in the state.

“Fellow citizens of Plateau State, you will recall that I announced a 24-hour curfew in Jos South and Jos North Local Government Areas on 20th October, 2020, in response to the disturbances that arose when hoodlums hijacked the EndSARS protests leading to the destruction of lives and properties.

“After an assessment of the situation, the curfew was relaxed from the hours of 6a.m to 8p.m from 23rd October, 2020.

“However, some hoodlums broke into the warehouses where palliatives delivered to the State by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development last week were stored awaiting distribution and carted them away.

“This looting has spread to other facilities and is gradually degenerating and threatening the peace and security of the State,” he said.

He said the latest curfew is to forestall further escalation of the action or any unrest.

Lalong said that security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew and ensure that all violators are arrested and prosecuted.

“I call on all citizens and stakeholders to continue to cooperate with Government in ensuring the peace and progress of Plateau State,” he said.

BREAKING: Oyetola declares another curfew in Osun as hoodlums continue attack on public, private properties

BROADCAST BY THE GOVERNOR, THE STATE OF OSUN, MR. ADEGBOYEGA OYETOLA ON THE DECLARATION OF 24-HOUR CURFEW ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2020

My dear Good People of the State of Osun,

It is with a high sense of responsibility that I address you this afternoon in respect of the unfortunate situation in our Dear State.

Government notes with huge disappointment, the abuse of the suspension, a day ago, of the 24-hour curfew earlier declared in the State to forestall the breakdown of law and order and protect the lives and property of citizens and residents.

It is unfortunate that hoodlums and criminals have taken advantage of government’s action to wantonly loot government and private property, including private business premises and homes in several parts of the State this morning. This is unacceptable and it stands condemned.

After an Emergency Security Meeting this afternoon, where the whole situation was reviewed and assessed, we came to the inevitable conclusion to declare a curfew. Consequently, I hereby declare a 24-hour curfew across the whole State with immediate effect.

This inevitable conclusion was reached to avert the continuation of this irresponsible act, especially now that the genuine protesters have suspended their protest earlier today.

My fellow citizens, the declaration of a 24-hour curfew, which will be indefinite until further notice, is to prevent the current state of anarchy from degenerating into large-scale breakdown of law and order.

For the avoidance of doubt, there shall be no vehicular (including Okada) or human movement during this period. Only those on essential duties will be permitted to move around. These persons too must carry with them proper identification to allow access.

Violators of the curfew rules shall be prosecuted in line with the extant laws of the State.

I enjoin all our citizens and residents to return home and remain in their homes until further notice.

I assure them of their safety during this period, as always, as security operatives have been deployed in all the parts of the State to restore and maintain law and order within the precinct of the law.

May God continue to bless and keep the State of Osun.
    Thank you and God bless.

Abdulrazaq imposes 24-hour curfew in Ilorin over violent protest, looting

Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has imposed 24-hour curfew in Ilorin following violent protest and looting of properties by hoodlums.

The governor announced the curfew late Friday night in a statewide broadcast.

He said he just had an emergency security meeting with commanders of various security agencies in the state to assess the situation in the state.

“Over the last few days, I had earlier met with the traditional rulers, opinion leaders, members of the student community, and many other stakeholders in the state.

“Our observation is that what has happened so far today was not a protest. It cannot be defended under any guise.

”It was a pure act of criminality. Some persons are hiding under the nationwide tension to commit crimes,” he said.

Abdulrazaq said the government had a duty to protect law abiding citizens and their properties.

“Lives are being threatened. Businesses are being looted. Public properties have been targeted. This is unacceptable. It is not who we are.

“To curb these acts of criminalities, I hereby declare a 24-hour curfew in Ilorin metropolis from midnight today October 23rd, 2020.

“This is in line with Sections 1, 2 and 4 of the Public Order Act Chapter 382 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.

”People are urged to stay indoors in compliance with this curfew. This will be reviewed as we watch developments,” he stated.

The Governor said while the curfew is on, security forces had been placed on the alert to maintain strict compliance, urging citizens to comply by this declaration which was meant to protect lives and properties.

“Finally, we apologise to our people and businesses that have been badly hurt. I urge them to be calm while we stop the criminality now,” he said.

  • BREAKING: Lagos Govt lightens curfew

    BREAKING: Lagos Govt lightens curfew

The Lagos State Government has lightened the curfew emplaced to arrest the unrest that followed the #EndSARS protest in the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement during a briefing on Friday.

The briefing followed an inspection carried out by the Governor on some places that were affected by the destruction during the mayhem in the aftermath of the Lekki Toll Plaza incident on Tuesday night.

According to the State Governor, Lagosians can go on their normal businesses from 8 am to 6 pm beginning from Saturday.

He, however, warned against staging any protests during the time.

“People can now go out between 8 am and 6 pm in Lagos from Saturday,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He further stated that there were still pockets of insecurity in the state, adding that the curfew might be reviewed on Saturday after consultations with security agencies.

The Governor said the government would commence cleaning the city from Saturday morning and appealed to motorists to drive with caution.

Sanwo-Olu said that the panel of inquiry into the Lekki Toll Plaza incident would start sitting from Monday and appealed to anyone with a petition to send it to the panel.

TNG reports Sanwo-Olu visited 27 locations that were affected by the destruction during the mayhem in the aftermath of the Lekki Toll Plaza incident.

The locations the Governor visited included the Palace of the Oba of Lagos, Ajeromi Ifelodun LG, FRSC, VIO office Ojodu Berger, BRT park at Berger, Lekki toll gate, bus terminals, police stations, historic government buildings, City Hall, private malls, offices, banks ATM etc.

The Governor said he was traumatized by it all and was in tears when he saw the level of destruction especially the oldest court in Nigeria at Igbosere.

“We have not seen this level of destruction before in the State. This is not the Lagos that was handed over to me in May 2019. How did we get here? This was supposed to be a peaceful protest.

“We need to continue to talk to ourselves. Everywhere I went today, people say they want peace, we all want peace, we cannot continue to lose our population and our monuments and infrastructure. Lagos needs to heal and the healing has started,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Governor, who also visited some hospitals where some of the injured at Tuesday Lekki toll gate were taken care of, said most of them have been discharged while the few remaining are responding to treatment.

Sanwo-Olu said the government would pick up the bills for the treatment of the injured.

He also said, the terms of reference of the judicial panel of inquiry and restitution has been expanded to include investigation of all issues that happened at Lekki Toll gate on Tuesday and it will be sitting at the Lagos Court of Arbitration at Lekki from Monday, urging all who have a case to petition the panel.

#EndSARS: Gov Oyetola suspends 24-hour curfew

Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun on Friday announced the suspension of the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state to tackle the rising violence and damages caused by hoodlums under the #EndSARS protest.

Oyetola, in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Wole Oyebamiji, in Osogbo, noted the high level of compliance with the 24-hour curfew he had declared to forestall breakdown of law and order.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyetola on Tuesday announced a 24-hour curfew effective from 11. 59 p.m. same day.

Oyetola said the curfew followed the unfortunate dangerous dimension the EndSARS protest had assumed across the country, particularly in the South-West States.

The governor, however, commended the residents for their show of understanding and cooperation in the last 48 hours of the curfew.

He equally hailed the youths for displaying high sense of maturity in carrying out their protest.

“The suspension is to allow members of the public approach the Panel to make their submissions and to go about their lawful businesses.

” However, government will not hesitate to reinstate the curfew should the need arise.

“Government remains committed to the cause of our youths and the #EndSARS protesters and shall take every necessary step to ensure that their demands are met.

“Considering government’s commitment and determination to meet the demands of the protesters, we appeal to the protesting youths to suspend their protest and engage Government in a dialogue”.

Oyetola enjoined residents of the state to be peaceful and to be law abiding, saying all efforts would be made to protect them and their property.

NAN also reports that the governor on Thursday inaugurated 12-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry to look into alleged brutality and other forms of rights abuses by officers and men of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police.

  • #EndSARS: Sanwo-Olu’s Curfew and Executive Hypocrisy, By Michael West

#EndSARS: Sanwo-Olu’s Curfew and Executive Hypocrisy, By Michael West

    By Michael West

At last, Buhari has failed! His government has brought self-inflicted uprising despite warnings from different quarters on the need to handle the #EndSARS protests carefully and tactically. Impunity is a blind executive arrogance often used to serve sinister motive than public good. In the context of what happened Tuesday night at the Lekki Toll Plaza venue of peaceful protest, General Muhammadu Buhari has failed both as a father and a leader. As at Thursday morning, the President is yet to yield to pressures from the Senate and some key personalities that he should address the nation on the raging issue.

I watched a Turkish government official video on Twitter lashed out at the President for deploying soldiers to kill innocent and unarmed youths. He rained invectives and insults on Buhari for his unfatherly, brutish and heartless order to mow the protesters. The outrage that is trailing the shooting is expected, and, I guess the President and the military high commanders are fully prepared to stomach vituperations that will be hurled at them from aggrieved and bereaved local and international citizens.

Mr. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu can’t absolve himself from blame in the unprovoked killing of peaceful protesters in his territory. He actually prepared the slab upon which the innocent ones were slain by the military guys on death mission. His blanket ban on protests via imposed curfew without clearly defined delimiter was all that was needed to pump bullets into the congregation of protesting youngsters. Sometimes, I wonder why logical reasoning, critical analysis and evaluation of situations are not often done before pronouncements or executive orders are made. Otherwise, how could government punish violence committed by miscreants in some parts of the metropolis on the well organised, peaceful and civil protesters several kilometres away?

Mr. Governor has been up and doing since the protest started over two weeks ago. He has demonstrated great comradeship with the protesting youths. He visited the President and the Inspector General of Police in Abuja and presented the youths’ demands to them. He briefed them on the situation of things and pleaded for a speedy response from them as a means to contain the protest from dragging for too long. I must commend him for being alive to his responsibility until Tuesday when he announced a 24-hour curfew in the state. That was a big and costly mistake.

Being a cosmopolitan city, Lagos is more complex than other states of the federation. That the protest has been largely peaceful, properly organised and firmly under self-control should have been considered before adopting the curfew option. The truth is there are many jobless and hungry vandals roaming the streets of Lagos than elsewhere in Nigeria. The Governor should not have announced the curfew at all. The situation in Lagos was manageable if proper evaluation and critical thinking were done before the decision to impose curfew was taken taken.

Replicating his Oyo State counterpart, Governor Seyi Makinde’s idea would have been ideal for Lagos. Like other states in the Southwest, schools have been shut. Makinde directed security agents to go after the hoodlums wherever they cause violence and skirmishes but they should protect the peaceful #EndSARS protesters and disallow miscreants from mingling with them. Makinde also asked Oyo State citizens to go about their lawful businesses without molestation. As at today, Oyo is peaceful and economic activities are going on while #EndSARS protest continues. This is what Governor Sanwo-Olu should have done and the peace Lagos has enjoyed over the weeks wouldn’t have been truncated.

Sanwo-Olu is rumoured to have acted on the instructions of his ‘big boss.’ Grapevine has it that he was “ordered” to declare the curfew, a directive his co-APC governors in the Southwest have partially adopted. It was alleged that the governor appeared “too complacent and unperturbed” about the daily financial losses to the protest at the toll plaza. This, it was alleged, may have necessitated the hurriedly imposed curfew.

There are footages of videos on social media showing street urchins being ferried and dispatched at different locations in posh black Toyota Prado jeeps by those suspected to be covert security agents or aides to some public officials or politicians with the sole aim of discrediting the peaceful protest in order to prepare a justifiable ground for military deployment so as to crush the agitation. The same tactics were said to have been applied in Lagos through the use of young boys rampaging and attacking police facilities. What is so obvious is that the public is aware that government is sponsoring thugs to disrupt the peaceful protests in Abuja and Lagos in particular. The real #EndSARS protesters are easily identified by their conduct, orderliness and non-violent demonstrations.

Till now, no rampaging demonstrators have been arrested, quizzed and set for prosecution. This underscores the fact that the miscreants were indeed hired for a purpose. I hope the current momentary but uneasy calm would not be mistaken for an end of the #EndSARS protests. It is only a short break to mourn their dead compatriots, reenergise and restrategise. Government should embark on speedy actions on the demands of the youths to keep them out of the streets before a resurgence of restive agitations ensue.

It is very annoying for Mr. Governor to deny casualties from the shooting. It is unthinkable that soldiers will shoot rounds of live ammunitions directly at defenceless youths at such a close range without recording casualties. The soldiers didn’t shoot into the air to disperse or scare the protesters. It was an intentional killing. There are video evidences to this effect. Meanwhile, actions preceding the shooting confirmed that it was carefully planned. The CCTV cameras were earlier dismantled by the officials of the toll plaza. Then, barely five minutes to the arrival of the killer squad, the street lights were switched off. It is therefore heartless and ungodly for Mr. Governor to claim ignorance of the whole plot whereas facts are already emerging on the shenanigans, executive hypocrisy and conspiracy against the youths on peaceful protest. For this sacrilegious and wicked action, only God can forgive the plotters and executors of the evil acts. Sanwo-Olu needs to ask for forgiveness. It is sad for him to stain his garment with the blood of innocent youths cut at their prime.

While Governor Sanwo-Olu is left alone to sort himself out of the problem of indiscretion and decision summersault, those who he did not have “direct control” over but caused the problem for him have been denying knowing next to nothing about the military deployment. It is funny to hear the Nigerian Army deny deploying its men to execute the dastardly engagement on the unarmed youngsters at Lekki toll plaza in Lagos.

As an elected public officer who is accountable to the people on his stewardship, actions and pronouncements, Sanwo-Olu should never agree to serve any parochial interest that is at variance with public good, peace and prosperity. If the fear of losing second term ticket is the reason for doing what is against his conscience and conviction, he should stand for what is right and commit his future to God’s hand. If he serves the people well, his political prospects lie in the hand of God and the support of the people. He should stand on the part of rectitude and take steps to appease the blood of the murdered protesters by reaching out to their bereaved families. And until Nigeria is restructured, reformed or new nations emerged from her, Aluta Continua!

  • BREAKING: Okowa orders closure of schools, imposes curfew in Delta State

BREAKING: Okowa orders closure of schools, imposes curfew in Delta State

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has ordered the immediate closure of all schools in Delta State until November.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Okowa made this known in a state-wide broadcast on Thursday.

The Governor also ordered a 48-hour curfew in the State starting from 6 pm today, saying that this follows the unfortunate incidences happening in the country.

He said some government buildings were burnt last night in Asaba, the State capital.

The Governor noted that the peaceful protests had been hijacked by suspected criminals, saying that the state government would not watch the elements to have a field day.

“This SARS occasion threatens to plunge the State into chaos and anarchy. It is a clear and present danger that we must stop from happening.

“In the meantime, I have ordered the closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools in the State until Monday November 2nd 2020.

“Because of the incidence that took place last night, I hereby impose a 48-hour curfew starting 6 pm today October 22 2020.

“It, therefore, means that everybody is expected to sit at home, exempting those on very essential service in the next 48 hours starting 6 pm today.

“Thereafter, we will review the situation and know what next steps to take,” Okowa said.

Meanwhile, Governor Okowa commended the youths for their peaceful conduct, but appealed to them to give peace a chance to enable the government address their demands.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards were properly accounted for, and urged traditional rulers and opinion leaders to lend their voices to the appeal.

Okowa urged youth leaders, community mobilisers and social media influencers to have a rethink on the protest in the interest of the nation.

“My dear people of Delta State, it has become necessary for me to address you following the unfortunate turn of events in our nation.

“In all my communications with you in the last two weeks, I have consistently maintained that the #ENDSARS protest is a laudable.

“It has drawn national attention and outcry to the brutalities Nigerians, particularly the youths, has endured in the hands of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad – SARS.

“I commend our youths for rising to the occasion and organising themselves in such an impressive and spectacular fashion.

“The nation heard your voices loud and clear, and all that now remains is for both the national and sub-national governments to take appropriate remedial measures, which includes embarking on total and comprehensive reform of the Nigerian Police and our governance systems.

“Unfortunately, unlike what we are seeing in the last two weeks, cases of arson, looting and other violent conducts have crept in.

“It does appear that the #ENDSARS protest has been hijacked by some misguided and opportunistic elements. This sad situation threatens to plunge the state into chaos and anarchy.

“It is a clear and present danger that we must stop from happening; only last night, some government buildings were burnt in Asaba,’’ Okowa said.

He said that following the directive of the National Economic Council, he had inaugurated a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to investigate cases of police brutality in the state, and had also set up a Victims Support Fund.

He expressed confidence that justice would be served and appealed to the youths to remain calm, law-abiding and give peace a chance.

“I want you to consider yourselves as having won this battle; the government is on your side and we are committed to righting the wrongs of the past.

“However, for us to be able to do that, we need an atmosphere of peace and security.

“We obviously cannot make progress in an atmosphere of unease, when public buildings are being torched, roads are being blocked, and when citizens are not allowed to go about their normal businesses.

“I urge our youths to please leave the streets, sheathe their swords and monitor the response from the government.

“Our cause is just and we agree, but as a state it is the responsibility of all of us to defend our state and we do not want unscrupulous elements, many of whom have come from other states, to destroy that which every one of us has laboured for.

“From all intelligence reports, the people who caused the crisis of last night are not from Delta State, but the opportunities of the protests have given rise to this.

“I want to please appeal to the conscience of our youths while we have the right to air our grievances, I believe that we all collectively need to defend our state; we need to be able to conserve resources even at this very critical time of global economic downturn.

“We cannot afford to allow miscreants from other states to destroy that which we have built over the past few years. The security of the state is a shared responsibility and one that we must all take very seriously,’’ he said.

He called on the youths to present their leaders for dialogue in order to be part of the process of the judicial panel of enquiry set up to look into the brutalities of the police, particularly the defunct SARS.

“I believe that when they cooperate with the Judicial Panel on cases of brutality and killings are brought to the fore, then and only then, can the government attend to grieving families and also ensure that those policemen who are directly and indirectly involved are brought to book.

“In the meantime, I have ordered the closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools in Delta State until Monday, November 2, 2020.

“And, because of the incident that took place last night, I hereby impose a 48-hour curfew starting from 6 p.m. today October 22, 2020.

“It therefore means that everybody is expected to sit at home exempting those on very essential service in the next 48 hours starting at 6 p.m. today.

“Thereafter, we will review the situation and know what next steps to take,’’ Okowa said.

#EndSARS: Wike imposes 24-hour curfew in Onyigbo LGA, others

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has imposed a 24 hour curfew in the entire Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State.

Governor Wike in a state wide broadcast today also announced that the curfew also extends to Mile 1, Mile 2, Emenike, Ikowu and Iloaubuchi areas of Port Harcourt Local Government Area as well as Oil Mill area of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the State.

The governor explained that the decision to impose the curfew was taken after a State Security Council meeting which held at the Government House, Port Harcourt earlier today.

Governor Wike stated that while the State Government appreciate and commend the peaceful nature of the on going “EndSARS protests , it was becoming clear by the day that the protest had been hijacked by hoodlums to unleash carnage.

“Earlier today, some hoodlums attacked and destroyed Police Stations and Court buildings in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State. Another set of hooligans were also on rampage at the Ikokwu spare parts markets disturbing public peace and damaging property.”

Governor Wike asserted that the State government cannot watch helplessly and allow trouble-makers to take the laws into their hands and use the current situation to create a state of panic and insecurity.

To this end, he said consequently, the State’s Security Council had decided to impose curfew in some parts of the State to secure lives and property.

“A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Mile 1, Mile 2, Emenike, Ikokwu and Iloaubuchi arears of Port Harcourt from 6.30 p.m. today 21st October 2020.”

“A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on the entire Oyigbo Local Government Area from 6.30 p.m. today, 21st October 2020; a 24-hour curfew has also been imposed on Oil mill area in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area” he said.

The governor has therefore directed security agencies to enforce the curfew with effect from 6.30 p.m. today 21st October 2020.

Similarly, Local Government Chairmen have also been directed to mobilize vigilantes and work with security agencies to ensure that no hoodlum is allowed to disturb the peace or destroy lives and property in their Local Government Areas.

“We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and report all suspicious characters to the security agencies for immediate action. Let me appeal to our youths not to allow themselves to be used to roll-back the peace we are enjoying in the State under any pretext” he added.
