CVR: INEC uncovers 27,817 multiple registrations in Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uncovered 27, 817 multiple registrations from the just concluded Continuous Voter Registration in Anambra.

This is even as the commission added 146,353 new voters to the state voter register.

The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, on Thursday in Abuja.

Olumekun said that the commission met on Thursday and among other issues, deliberated on the final register of voters for the Nov. 8, Anambra governorship election.

He said that the commission also deliberated on the status of letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties.

He noted that in continuation of preparations for the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, the commission carried out voter registration in the 316 wards across the state between July 8 and 20.

He noted that during that period, 168,187 resident registered as new voters, adding that at the end of the registration exercise, INEC set aside July 26 and Aug. 1, for display of all new registrants in all the wards for claims and objections in line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.

He added that the commission furthermore scrutinised the list using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to detect invalid registrations.

“At the end of the process, 27,817 records were found to be double or multiple registrations and removed from the list.

“Consequently, the figure for new registrants now stands at 140,370 while valid applications for transfer into the State is 5,983, making a total of 146,353 new voters.

“Prior to the recent voter registration, Anambra had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the new registrants, the voters roll for the state now stands at 2,802,790,” he said.

According to Olumekun, distribution of the new figures by Local Government Area, shows that Idemili North with 246,318 (8.79 per cent) has the highest number of registered voters, followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73 per cent) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71 per cent).

“Dunokofia and Anambra West have 83,580 (2.98 per cent) and 71,332 (2.55 per cent) registered voters respectively.”

He disclosed that the distribution of new voters by LGA was already uploaded to INEC website and other official platforms for public information.

He assured new voters in Anambra as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of their lost or damaged Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) that their cards would be ready for collection before the state governorship election.

He also disclosed that the commission had received additional 19 more letters of intent from association seeking to be registered as political parties, bringing the total so far to 171 as at Sept 3.

Olumekun reiterated that a shortlist of the pre-qualified associations was being finalised for the next stage of application for registration.

He added that the committee reviewing the letters of intent had prepared its recommendations for final consideration by the commission.

He appealed to all the associations who submitted letters of intent to remain patient as INEC finalise the process.

“We also urge them to avoid frequent changes to their logos, acronyms and addresses or one association submitting multiple requests.

“Some associations have changed their interim leaderships, following defections to other associations or even existing political parties, thereby delaying the process,” Olumekun said.

He reassure the associations that INEC would treat all applications fairly, urging them to assist the process by remaining consistent.

“As always, the commission will continue to communicate with Nigerians on all its activities,” he said.

Olumekun noted that the latest update on the CVR and application had been uploaded to INEC website and other official platforms for public information.

CVR figures: INEC dismisses ADC’s allegation in Lagos

The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) in Lagos State has described the African Democratic Congress’ (ADC) allegation of figure manipulation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in the state as unfounded and inaccurate.

NAN reports that ADC recently alleged possible manipulations of the online pre-registration exercise for the CVR in Lagos State among other states.

Reacting in a statement on Monday in Lagos, Mr Taiwo Gbadegesin, Head, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, Lagos State, said that the speculation remained figment of the party’s imagination.

“The Lagos registration figures are consistent with past CVR trends and reflect the state’s demographic realities: a large. youthful, and tech-savvy population.

“In the last CVR (2021-2022), Lagos recorded the highest number of registrations nationwide.

“The State’s total registered voters rose from 6,570,291 before the exercise to 7,060,195 afterward. The current figures therefore, align with this established pattern.

“It is also important to note that the present data covers not only new registrants but also citizens applying for transfers, replacements of lost of damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and updates to personal information.

“It is therefore inaccurate to equate the totals solely with fresh registrations,” Gbadegesin said.

According to him, the numbers also reflect the commission’s effective deployment as well as the state office’s numerous and sustained public awareness efforts.

He said that INEC had been promoting transparency in carrying out its constitutional mandate.

“INEC Lagos operates an open-door policy, making daily registration data available to interested stakeholders.

“The commission urges political actors and the public to please avoid needless speculations and rely on verified data and official information.

“INEC Lagos State remains fully committed to its constitutional mandate of delivering free, fair, transparent and credible elections beginning with an inclusive, credible and accountable voter registration,” Gbadegesin said.

NAN recalls that INEC on Aug. 18 launched a nationwide CVR with online pre-registration via its portal: https://www.cvr.inecnigeria.org OR www.cvr.inec.gov.ng.

The in-person physical registration/biometric capturing started one week after on Aug. 25.

INEC had on Aug. 25 revealed that a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians completed the online pre-registration process in the first week of the CVR, conducted from Aug. 18 to Aug. 24, 2025.

The CVR State Pre-Registration Report released by the commission showed that Osun State emerged with the highest number of pre-registrations, recording an impressive 393,269 registrants, the largest share by percentage at 28.51 percent.

This was closely followed by Lagos State, recording 222,205 entries, a commanding 16.11 percent of the national total.

Ogun also had a strong turnout with 132,823 pre-registrations, representing 9.63 percent.

However, the opposition ADC has been raising concerns about the genuineness of these figures, alleging manipulations.

  • CVR: Just one week, INEC captures over 1.3 million Nigerians for voter’s cards nationwide

CVR: Just one week, INEC captures over 1.3 million Nigerians for voter’s cards nationwide

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has captured over 1.3 million Nigerians in the nationwide online pre-registration of voters that commenced on Monday, 18th August 2025.

According to the INEC, in a statement released by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, as of Sunday, a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians registered nationwide.

“As promised, the Commission is glad to publish the first weekly update of the exercise by providing details of the registration by State, gender, age, occupation and disability,” the statement reads.

The breakdown of the online pre-registrations shows that 661,846 (47.96%) are male and 717,856 (52.04%) are female.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 constitute the majority of the registrants with 860,286 (62.37%).

In terms of occupation, 374,534 (27.15%) are students, while the figure for persons with disability is 27,089 (1.96%).

“Full details have been published on our website and other official platforms for public information.

“Meanwhile, physical registration kicks off today in our 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide. This will afford those who prefer the in-person option to register at the centres and those who chose the online pre-registration method to complete their registration.

“Once again, the Commission appeals to the public that the ongoing voter registration is only open to Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and who are not registered voters. Double or multiple registration is a violation of the law.

“However, inter-State/FCT and intra-State/FCT transfer of voters as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voters cards are allowed during the CVR.

“The exercise will continue for one year until 30th August 2026. However, the Commission urged all intending registrants not to wait until the deadline approaches when, from experience, the registration centres are inundated by eleventh hour registrants amidst appeals for extension of time,” Olumekun stated.

CVR: Participate, don’t wait till 11th hour – INEC urges Lagos residents

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has urged eligible residents to participate in  Continuous Voter Registration(CVR) and avoid last minute rush as the commission begins the exercise nationwide on Monday.

Prof. Ayobami Salami, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) made this appeal at a news conference on Tuesday, to announce the commission’s readiness for the process in Lagos.

Salami said: “Don’t wait until the last hours. We must reduce the rush towards the end of the exercise.

“We appeal to all eligible residents to come and use this opportunity now before the rush begin.

“The exercise for now, will take place at the state secretariat, 6 Birrel Avenue, Sabo-Yaba, Lagos as well as all the 20 Local Government offices of INEC.”

According to him, the CVR exercise is a crucial component of the electoral process, aimed at ensuring that all eligible citizens are registered to vote.

He said that the exercise would start Aug. 18 and that  online registration   could be done anywhere  before the physical biometric capturing, beginning Aug. 25.

Salami said that the exercise is expected to end on Aug. 30, 2026.

He said: “Our goal throughout the exercise is to make the process accessible, inclusive and transparent. The Online pre-registration will commence on Monday, Aug.18, 2025.

“At this stage, registrants are urged to go online to commence the registration via our website portal for registration: https://www.cvr.inecnigeria.org OR www.cvr.inec.gov.ng.

“The In-Person Physical Registration biometric capturing will commence on Monday, Aug. 25, in all our twenty (20) Local Government Area offices and the State secretariat of the Commission at Birrel Avenue, Yaba-Lagos.

“The exercise commences by 9.00 am and ends by 3.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. However, any person on the queue as at 3:00 pm during this period shall be allowed to register.”

The REC said that those eligible to partake in the process included adult Nigerians without prior registration,  those that had attained 18 years of age within the time frame of the exercise.

According to him, others  are those willing to replace their damaged or lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and those willing to transfer their voting rights to other Polling Units, Registration Areas (Wards), Local Governments or States.

“All these are within what we call intra- and inter-state transfers,” he said.

He added that other eligible residents are  those willing to update their details due to cases such as spelling errors, change of address, omissions and marital status.

“Let me use this medium to reiterate to the public that the commission frowns at underage registration as well as multiple registration because, such acts run foul of the provisions of the enabling instruments.

“Offenders will be handed over to  law enforcement agencies,” he added.

Salami said that residents with claims of lost cards,  requesting new cards  must present police report or court affidavit for such claims to be accepted.

Salami said that INEC was counting on the media for a successful CVR in the area of public awareness, education, sensitisations, monitoring and reporting as well as promotion of transparency.

According to him, the CVR exercise is open to all eligible citizens and the registration remains a crucial step in ensuring that citizens’ voices are heard.

The  REC also called for collaboration of  other  stakeholders to ensure the success of the exercise.

“I look forward to a robust and fruitful collaboration with the media to ensure that the CVR exercise is hitch-free.

“On our part, I want to assure that we are committed to providing regular updates,” he said.

Speaking,  Mr Muyiwa Yussuf, INEC Head of Department Voter Registration ICT in the state,  said that the process had been made flexible such that prospective applicants could register in registration centres close  to them in each of the LGAs.

He, however, said that such applicants must arm themselves with requisite information about where they  live and voting location, if  registering outside their LGA.

Shortly after the conference, INEC also held a meeting with political party stakeholders in the state.

TNG reports Nigerians who have turned 18 are now eligible to obtain their voter’s cards either via the online registration or present themselves at INCE’s local government area offices or other designated registration centres for the CVR exercise.

Eligible voters, who had lost their voter cards, misplaced their cards, or whose cards were mutilated or had changed addresses or residences could also present themselves for the physical registration.

Yakubu equally updated the CSOs of INEC’s preparations for the Anambra governorship election scheduled for Nov. 8 and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), area council elections coming up Feb. 21, 2026.

“The commission will continue to update you on these and other electoral activities. I urge you to equally monitor these activities.

She also remarked on the recent establishment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) unit in the commission, saying that is a positive step.

Nwadishi emphasised the need for the commission to carry the CSOs along in the area of public sensitisation on the CVR programme.

  • CVR: INEC invites 246 applicants for validation of biometrics

CVR: INEC invites 246 applicants for validation of biometrics

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has invited 246 applicants in the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Edo and Ondo to come and validate their biometric details.

Mr Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the applicants comprised 82 in Edo and 164 in Ondo.

Olumekun said that the commission, at its regular weekly meeting on Thursday, considered among other issues, matters arising from the last CVR in the two states held from May 27 to June 9.

He said that following the conclusion of the exercise, INEC displayed the register for one week in the 395 wards across the two states for claims and objections by Nigerians.

He said it was in line with the provision of Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022.

Olumekun said that after the manual process, INEC subjected the register to a further clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

He said that at the end of the exercise INEC discovered that the quality of biometric details for the 246 applicants did not meet the threshold for seamless accreditation using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

The national commissioner said that although the number constituted 0.1 per cent of the 269,992 new registrants (pre-ABIS) in the two states, INEC was determined to give every Nigerian the opportunity to exercise his/her right to vote seamlessly during elections.

“Consequently, the commission is inviting the new registrants to come forward for validation of their biometric details in the same locations where they registered during the CVR.

“The exercise will take place from Monday July 22nd to  July 28.

“The distribution of the 82 registrants in Edo shows that they come from four Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“Ten are from Uwessan Ward 1 in Essan Central LGA, two in Emu Ward in Essan South LGA,  69 in Ofunama Ward in Ovia South West LGA and one voter in Irhue Ward in Uhunmwonde LGA.

“The 164 voters in Ondo are from three LGAs.

“Eleven are from Ofosu/Onisere Ward in Idanre LGA, one voter in Ugbo Ward V in Ilaje LGA while the rest are from Ose LGA (eight in Imoru/Arimogija Ward and 144 in Okeluse Ward),’’ he said.

Olumekun said that before the end of the week, the affected registrants would be contacted using the mobile phones and/or other contact details provided by them during the CVR.

He, however, said that a comprehensive list, including their polling units, had been uploaded to INEC website and social media platforms for immediate action by the affected registrants and for public information.

Olumekun added that at the end of the exercise next week, INEC would provide the final detailed breakdown of the new registrants in the two states, followed by the timetable for the collection of PVCs.

He urged the affected registrants to come forward for the validation exercise.

  • Edo: INEC Chairman orders deployment of more registration machines for CVR

Edo: INEC Chairman orders deployment of more registration machines for CVR

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has ordered for deployment of more voter registration machines to some centres in Edo, for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

Yakubu said on Thursday in Benin, when he visited some of the registration centres in the state to access the ongoing exercise.

He lauded the massive turnout of the registration at different centres in the state, and assured of doing everything possible to make the process seamless.

Speaking at the registration centre located Western Boys Secondary School, Ward 2, Ikpoba Okha LGA, Yakubu directed that two additional machines and Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), should be mobilised to the centre.

“The most important thing is for us to expedite the process. So what we have decided now is that tomorrow there will be two additional machines to this centre, to make it five machines.

“There are two queues. One is for registration, the other one is for transfer and collection of cards. So they are going to reorganise the queues. But I’ve seen the numbers here, and one of the solutions is to increase the number of machines to this centre,” he said.

Also at the INEC Ikpoba Okha LGA Office, Yakubu directed that additional registration machines should be deployed to the centre.
He also monitored the exercise at Eweka Primary School in Use Ward 3, Egor LGA.

Yakubu warned staff of the commission against demanding for money before registering people who presented themselves for the exercise.

On observation that some political parties were trying to hijack the exercise in favour of their supporters, Yakubu said that the commission would be meeting with the state commissioner of Police and other security agencies in the state to address the concern.

“My message consistently is that all the staff engaged in the registration, whether they are ad hoc staff or regular staff, should know that no one should collect money from any Nigerian who comes to register or transfer or request for replacement of cards.

“This is a service paid for by the Federal Government and it must be respected. Where we catch any staff involved in this act, that staff will be dealt with, whether the staff is regular staff or ad hoc staff,” Yakubu said.

Earlier, some of the prospective registrants on the queue commended INEC for the exercise and urged the commission to mobilise more registration machine to fast-track the registration process.

Mrs Sliver Angela and Mr Oluwasegun Oketoki told NAN at the registration centre located at INEC Ikpoba Okha LGA Office, that they came out as early as 5a. m., to register and called for deployment of more machines to the centre

“Most of us came here since 5.30. The machine was not working fast.

“The INEC staff are trying to coordinate us but some of us are pushing to boycott the line. That is what is delaying us. Now they are attending to us and everything is going on smoothly.

“If there is any alternative to bring additional machines, let INEC do so,” Angela said.

Mrs Blessings Uwagwe at Eweka Primary School, also complained about the delay in the process and the need for more machines to be deployed as more people are coming out to register.

Mr Oransaiye Nicolas, said initially one machine was deployed to the centre, but following their complaints, additional two machines were mobilised to the centre.

Nicolas commended Yakubu for directing that additional machines should be deployed to the centre.

Meanwhile, an INEC ad hoc Staff, Mr Oladele Emmanuel, deployed for the registration at the centre said he had no challenge with functionality of the registration machines.

  • INEC begins voters registration in Edo, Ondo

INEC begins voters registration in Edo, Ondo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  has commenced Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in  397 centres  of Edo and Ondo, ahead of the state governorship election.

Mr Sam Olumekun, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee stated this on Monday in Abuja.

He said that the online locator for the registration centres had been released for easy identification.

Olumekun said however, that the venue of the exercise in Edo had been shifted to the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area office located at 16, Custom Road, off Benin/Auchi Road, Benin, due to the flooding at the state INEC Headquarters.

He said that to facilitate easy access to the CVR locations in the two states, the commission had already shared the hard copies of detailed names and addresses of the centres with stakeholders.

He said that the locations had also been uploaded to its website and social media platforms.

“In addition, the commission is releasing an easy online locator of the registration centres. Interested persons can send an SMS to a dedicated number (09136913660) from their mobile phones indicating the name of the State, Local Government Area and Ward.

“ In return, they will receive the detailed address of the centre and a Google map to lead them there. Alternatively, interested registrants can simply visit our website http://cvr.inecnigeria.org/locator.

“A short graphic of the procedure for accessing the registration centres has been uploaded to our website and social media platforms,’’ he said.

Olumekun urged all eligible voters in Edo and Ondo who were not registered to seize the opportunity of the CVR to register.

“ It is also an opportunity for those who wish to transfer their registration from other States of the Federation to the two States or from one location to another within the States to do so.

“Similarly, requests for replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) can be made at the registration centres.

“Furthermore, uncollected PVCs will also be available at the registration centres for collection on presentation of the Temporary Voters’ Cards (TVCs) by registered voters in person. No cards will be collected by proxy,’’ he said.

Olumekun appealed to eligible Nigerians to come out en masse early to register and avoid last minute rush.
