Raining curses on someone on social media is criminal offence – Police spokesman

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, has asserted that raining curses or making abusive remarks at individuals on social media constitutes cyberbullying, a criminal offense punishable by law.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that Adejobi made this known in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday where he stressed that while freedom of expression allows people to voice opinions, it does not permit online abuse or harassment.

Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not an expression of freedom or criticism,” he stated. “And cyberbullying, which is even different from defamation, is a criminal offense and punishable. Be guided.”

The force spokeman’s statement sparked a debate on the platform, with some users questioning the legitimacy of such a law.

Felix Abayomi, posting under the handle #felabayomi, asked, “When does raining curses become a crime? I look forward to the day someone will challenge these laws.

Another user, #kingkhone4real, sarcastically remarked, “If that were the case, then all Nigerians should have been in prison by now.

@geoffreydpr wrote: “Nigeria go and study the constitution let nobody tell you what is not true , study the constitution so you can protect your self.”

However, not all users opposed Adejobi’s stance. #omoopee_ supported the call for responsible online behavior, saying, “You are absolutely right, sir. Raining curses and engaging in cyberbullying is not freedom of expression but an act of harm. We must all learn to express ourselves responsibly.”

  • OPINION: Is social media bullying of public figures a fair way to tackle influence misuse?

OPINION: Is social media bullying of public figures a fair way to tackle influence misuse?

Over the years, social media have become an integral part of communication, interaction, and connection between individuals, including among celebrities. Unlike in the past, where physical presence was needed to speak/express one’s view, a simple tweet, post, and video on an internet platform would immediately get to the receiver in a matter of seconds.

Fans worldwide, particularly in Nigeria, benefit from these communication tools to connect with their favourite celebrities but also hide under the technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target a celebrity perceived to have ‘gone out of the line.’  Cyberbullying is a faceless form of assault that takes place using electronic technology (cell phones, computers, as well as social media platforms and websites).

This form of online violence can take the form of mean text messages or fabricated rumours posted on social networking sites. Nowadays, it is common to see negative comments, abuses, curses, or threats issued by unknown people to celebrities, which go on to take a negative emotional and psychological toll on the victim.

A very recent occurrence is Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham, who, in the past few days, has been faced with heavy backlashes from netizens across social media over her choice of candidate in the 2023 general elections.

The thespian’ trouble started last year when she publicly endorsed Bola Tinubu by sharing pictures of her meeting with the then-presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress alongside the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

She expressed renewed hope and confidence in Tinubu’s vision and strategies for addressing the nation’s challenges in her post.

However, ever since the country’s economy nosedived due to Bola Tinubu-led administration’s decisions to remove subsidy which has induced hardship, pushing many Nigerians below the poverty level, netizens have singled out and criticised Abraham for endorsing and defending her political choice.

Recently, an X user accused the mother of one of arresting his mother for defaming her. Abraham, however, debunked the claims, insisting she never illegally arrested the individual or the mother.

“I said I wasn’t going to say anything anymore, but there are some things that you can’t accuse me wrongly of and expect me not to say something. I would not arrest anybody’s mum because I have a mother as well.

“I never arrested anyone’s mother. I have not committed any crime, and I have only exercised my democratic rights, and they keep bullying me,” Abraham stated.

Despite the actress’s denial, the events took a surprising turn after aggressive fans edited her bio on Wikipedia, tagging her as a bully. Others took the video streaming platform Netflix to demand that her movies be taken down. Expressing deep frustration with the backlash, Abraham hinted at extreme distress and asserted her readiness to die and take those who defame or bully her along.

The controversy drew reactions from several celebrities, including Mr. Macaroni, who warned against using fame and clout to intimidate or lock up fellow citizens. Other celebrities, such as Saidi Balogun, threw their weight behind the actess.

It is important to note that celebrities have been targets of cyberbullying at various times. From Davido to Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, these celebrities are subjected to demeaning vitriols and backlashes over the littlest things.

Similarly, Funke Akindele, another Nollywood actress who’s a victim of cyberbullying, was dragged to the gutters during her campaign as the Lagos deputy governorship candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which she lost.

The actress did not only endure bullying virtually but also physically as she was chased out of a popular Lagos market by suspected thugs while campaigning. Despite the insults hurled at her,  Funke, who seems to have grown a tough shell, absorbed the lashes and channelled them to making Nollywood most-grossing movie in 2023.

Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham’s reaction to online bullying

During the heated online controversy between Toyin Abraham with trolls, netizens compared how Funke who, despite being bullied during her campaign as the Lagos deputy governorship candidate under PDP, ignored the attack and went on to achieve one of the most remarkable feat in Nollywood, as she became the first filmmaker to produce the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time, unlike Toyin who went ballistic with the trolls, by making series of arrests.

The truth is, regardless of the Buka street star’s perseverance in the face of unprintable backlashes, she recently gave into the pressure, breaking down to weep uncontrollably on an Instagram live session a couple of months ago after an Instagram user wished death on her children. This is not far-fetched from Toyin’s reaction, only that, the Ijakumo star involved the police after breaking down severally over the vitriols thrown at her.

Where do we draw the line?

Like the two actresses above, being a celebrity does not make one immune from the power of cyberbullies. Instead, it leaves a catastrophic impact on the victims. Netizens argued that celebrities should emulate colleagues who stay silent in the face of cruel comments and backlash against them; even these so-called- strong-headed celebrities have had a breaking point. Toyin Abraham may have misused her influence’ during the 2023 general elections, but at the end of the day, how these bullies conduct themselves online is completely unacceptable.

Earlier today, the actress had some National Youth Service Corps members (NYSC) arrived at her movie set, and showered her with love and solidarity in the face of tribulations. It is heartwarming to know that despite the vitriol and immense hate she has endured in the past few months online, Nigerians still have love and kindness.

Curse, threat on my family were beyond what I can take – Toyin Abraham gives reason for X user’ arrest

Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has taken to social media to respond to an X user, who publicly accused her of arresting his mother.

Taking to the micro-blogging platform, X formerly Twitter, the X user, identified as Jeffery called out the actress for using police to arrest his mother after accusing him of cyberbullying.

He wrote; “Toyin_abraham1 you sent police to pick up my mom at home. Lol Said I bullied you. Where did i bully you? Me of all people?”

“You will have to send the police to pick all of us. You are very shameless,” he added.

Reacting, Toyin replied the X user saying she can endure whatever insults hurled at her, but draws the line when it comes to her family. She further clarified that she never arrested his mother and only made a report of cybercrime as a citizen.

“You can abuse and call me names; it’s fine, and as I said, I will accept and take it cos I’m in the public eyes, but cursing kids and lying is what I won’t accept, and lastly, I never and will never arrest anyone’s mother. I made a report on cybercrime as a citizen.

“I made my report at cybercrime cos the threat to life and curse and threat on my family were beyond what I can take, as for me, abuse me, insult me please, say anything to me please”.

The Twitter user further revealed how the movie star picked up her mom from her shop at Panti police station and prayed for God to judge her.

“It’s one thing to make a tweet, and you arrest me. It’s another thing to arrest me for not even making a single comment, @toyin_abraham1. You picked my mom up from her shop to Panti police station for something I didn’t even do. God will judge you”.

Toyin replied, “Lying in my head comfortably now, the world won’t see this if I react how, they will say something else. I never arrested your mum. Your friend Ayo was arrested for bullying and cursing and defaming my family, and mum went there saying she won’t leave without him”.

Iyabo Ojo fires back at Yomi Fabiyi for claiming she apologised to him

Popular actress, Iyabo Ojo has fired back at Yomi Fabiyi after he claimed that she apologised to him for alleged cyber-bullying

The duo have been at loggerheads over their opposing views in the case of Baba Ijesha, their colleague accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl.

On Wednesday, the rift between them took a new dimension as Iyabo filed an N100 million lawsuit against him for alleged defamation.

But reacting in a series of posts on his Instagram page, Fabiyi had described the suit as lacking merits.

In one of the posts, Fabiyi had shared a screenshot of the pair’s chat wherein Ojo admitted to cyberbullying him and then apologised.

“Na jeje I seat down, you jumped on my harmless post and subjected me to cyberbullying which you Iyabo confessed to and invariably apologised,” he had written.

Ojo, however, slammed the actor for sharing only a part of their conversation with the public without stating what informed her comment.

In the screenshotted chat released by Ojo on her Instagram page, Fabiyi appeared to be telling the actress about the “kind regard” he has for her, adding that he will be the last one to “come for your words or post”.

According to the chat, the actor also maintained that he was not supporting Baba Ijesha as many believed, noting that he was only calling for a thorough investigation before reaching a conclusion in the matter.

Fabiyi also appeared to have told her that he was hurt as her posts gave people an impression that he was backing Baba Ijesha.

“When you see the video, knowing how much I value you, you should call me before attacking my stance,” he had said.

He also told Ojo that her post made people subject him to cyberbullying with the actress “apologising in return”.

“I’m sorry you have been cyber bullied. But I need my colleagues to stop. The video wasn’t meant for you alone,” she had said.

In another post, Ojo, however, slammed Fabiyi for attempting to make peace with her on WhatsApp and going online thereafter to chase clout.

“Yomi Fabiyi I ain’t Joking with you, you don’t need to post the apology conversation alone, let me help you post our conversation from the beginning. Note!! all our voice note is still intact,” she wrote.

“Yomi Fabiyi, I ain’t playing with you, you can’t make peace with me on WhatsApp then I wake up the next day to find out you still clouting with the innocent girl’s case, trying so hard to change the narratives to favour Baba Ijesha ………

“I ain’t backing down no matter how hard you try to twist & turn the story, the earlier you get that into your thick skull the better for you ……”

Don’t be evil, don’t be mean to someone just because you feel you can hide behind a phone and say all sorts .It is really not worth it. What do you gain really?
