Euro 2024: C. Ronaldo sets new record in Portugal’s win over Czech

Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo has set another record in European football.

On Tuesday night the Al Nassr of Saud Arabia  forward  became only  the first player to feature in six European Championships.

The 39-year-old started for his country in their 2-1 win over Czech Republic.

Ronaldo made his debut in European championship in 2004  hosted by his own country when he first appeared for the Portuguese national team.

Incidentally Ronaldo scored his international goal against Czech Republic.

Now, 20 years later, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner faced the same team in their opening fixture of this year’s championship.

Since his debut, Ronaldo has played in every subsequent Portugal team since – 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 (played in 2021 due to COVID-19) and now 2024.

With 14 Euros goals, the Al-Nassr superstar also holds the record for the most goals by any player in the history of the competition.

Police investigate threats against presidential candidate

Czech police said on Saturday they were investigating an anonymous threatening letter against presidential candidate Andrej Babiš.

The letter contained live ammunition and explicit insults, Babiš told Czech news agency CTK.

Babiš, a billionaire who founded the centre-right populist ANO 2011 (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens 2011) political party, said such threats against a political candidate and his family should have no place in a free society.

Babiš is facing independent politician Petr Pavel, a retired army general and former top NATO official, in the run-off election for Czech president next weekend.

Pavel condemned the threats against Babiš alongside other top Czech politicians.

In the Czech Republic, a parliamentary democracy, the president serves as head of state and holds largely ceremonial powers.

Polls currently favour Pavel in the election, although observers still consider Babiš a viable candidate.

Babiš in his campaign has prominently criticized Pavel’s support for weapons deliveries to Ukraine, arguing such explicit support risks drawing the Czech Republic into a war with Russia.

Babiš instead has said he would like to mediate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Prague if elected.

Sweden takes over leadership of EU governing council for 6 months

The Swedish Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday took over the leadership of the European Union (EU) Council for a period of six months from Czech Republic.

It was reported that Sweden took over the leadership at a ceremony at the Swedish Embassy in Abuja.

The Swedish presidency will continue the leadership responsibility of the bloc’s core functioning co-legislature power.

The presidency of the council of the EU is responsible for the functioning of the Council of the EU, which is the co-legislation of the EU legislature alongside the European Parliament.

This rotates amongst the member states of the EU after every six months.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Ambassador of Czech Republic, Mr Zdeněk Krejči, said that the responsibility of the Czech Republic presidency was to create the condition of security and prosperity for the bloc.

He also added that bringing sustainable peace to Ukraine soil was paramount on the council’s leadership agenda.

“The events of the last months have shown that Europeans in a crisis triggered by an external threat are able to act quickly, effectively and in a united way.

“The overall objective of the Czech presidency was to contribute as much as possible to creating the desired conditions for the security and prosperity of the EU.

“In the context of the European values of freedom, social justice , democracy and the rule of law and environmental responsibility.

“Czech presidency of the bloc has been getting closer to the finish line and is gradually reaping the fruits of almost six months of work.

“It managed to facilitate an agreement among Member States on further measures to tackle the energy crisis, negotiate the EU budget for 2023 amongst others,” Krejči said.

Responding, the Swedish Ambassador-Designate to Nigeria, Ms Annika Hahn-Englund, lauded the leadership of the Czech presidency for uniting member states to have common ground to work at a difficult time for the bloc due to the Ukraine war.

She said: ”Together we can tackle the energy crises, to advance security and defence, related issues and to lead the climate change discussions and results at the COP27.

“Many of these dossiers will continue to be on the top of the agenda during the Swedish presidency.

”Sweden is number three in the Presidency Trio since the bloc calendar commenced in 2021, first it was French, then Czech Republic and on January 1 our leadership will commence.”

According to Krejči, building on the trio programme from Dec. 2021, the political direction for the Swedish EU presidency can be summarised in five headings.

They are: “Providing security for EU citizens and strengthening the EU’s role in the world. Stopping organised crime. Speeding up the climate transition.

“Strengthening the EU’s competitiveness for the jobs of the future. Safeguarding the EU’s fundamental values, ” she said.

NAN reports that the handing over coinicided with the Swedish national event called “Lucia”, which is celebrated each year on Dec. 13 with candlelight and choir singing Christmas songs

The Swedish event also called the Santa Lucia celebrations is believed to bring hope and light to the dark Swedish and Norwegian winters during the Christmas period.

The Abuja Amemuso Choir sang some of the Lucia traditional songs to commemorate the evening event with their angelic voices carrying through the compound singing Christmas hymns to honor the patron, St. Lucy (Santa Lucia).

The holiday’s history goes back to the 4th century.

The legend says that Italian martyr Lucia carried food and goods to the Christians at that time who were hiding out in the catacombs under Rome, using a wreath dotted with candles to light her way and keep her hands free,

  • President lands in intensive care unit of military hospital day after election

President lands in intensive care unit of military hospital day after election

Czech President Milos Zeman was receiving treatment in an intensive care unit on Sunday, creating uncertainty at a time when he is due to lead political talks about forming a new government after a parliamentary election.

Director Miroslav Zavoral of the Central Military Hospital in Prague said Zeman, 77, was admitted due to complications related to an undisclosed chronic condition.

“We know the diagnosis precisely, which allows us to target treatment,” Zavoral said, adding that he did not have the president’s approval to disclose details of the diagnosis.

Zavoral did not say how serious the president’s condition was.

In the Czech Republic, the president leads talks with party leaders after elections to find a workable majority. Under the constitution, his authority to appoint the prime minister passes to the speaker of the lower house if the presidential position is vacated.

Reporters saw an ambulance leaving the presidential chateau at Lany, west of Prague, soon after Zeman met Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

The presidential office had previously said Zeman had been ill, and he spent eight days in hospital last month. The presidential office said at the time he had no life-threatening condition but was dehydrated and slightly exhausted.

Babis’ centrist ANO party narrowly lost the parliamentary election held on Friday and Saturday to the centre-right Together coalition and appears to have no chance of forming a ruling majority.

Together and the liberal Pirates/Mayors coalition between them won 108 seats in the 200-seat lower house and said they intended to form a government.

However, while Babis has conceded that Together won more votes as a coalition, he did not signal a move into opposition, saying “If the president authorises me to do so, I will lead talks on forming a cabinet”.

Under the constitution, the president can appoint anyone as prime minister and instruct them to nominate a cabinet. A new cabinet must face a vote of confidence in the lower house within a month of its appointment.

Zeman had said prior to the election that he would appoint the leader of the biggest winning individual party, not a coalition, to try to form a government.

This would be Babis, since ANO won the most votes of any party.

Zeman, an ally of Babis, has made no comment on his next steps since the election results.

Forming a government usually takes weeks or months, and no appointments are possible before the new lower house convenes, some time within a month after the election.

Zeman has been using a wheelchair due to neuropathy in his legs since earlier this year. read more

He cancelled a trip to the polling station on Friday, instead casting a ballot to a box brought to him by election officials, without media access.

The public Czech Radio and newspaper denikn.cz cited seven sources as saying last week that the president had suffered from ascites, or liquid collecting in the abdomen, during his previous hospital stay. The president’s spokesman then declined to comment on the report.

Denmark proceed to Euro 2020 semi-final

Denmark’s impressive and emotional Euro 2020 campaign continued as they marched on to the semi-finals courtesy of a victory over the Czech Republic in Baku.

The Danes have gone from strength to strength in the tournament since the trauma of their opening game, in which midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.

Having hammered Wales in the last 16, they impressively dealt with a dangerous and physical Czech side in a competitive last-eight tie played in a red-hot temperature in Azerbaijan.

They led from the fifth minute, when Thomas Delaney evaded his marker to head in from a corner.

A continual threat on the break, they made it 2-0 just before half-time, with Kasper Dolberg volleying in a superb cross from Joakim Maehle to add to the two goals he scored against Wales.

Their momentum was checked early in the second half as Patrick Schick coolly volleyed in his fifth goal of the tournament, taking him level with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Golden Boot.

But Denmark were able to recompose themselves and dig in to ensure the victory and a semi-final at Wembley on Wednesday.

Their opponent will be either England or Ukraine, who play each other in Rome on Saturday evening.

Czech Republic beat Netherlands to advance into Euro 2020 quarter-finals

A brave Czech Republic beat The Netherlands 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 on Sunday in Budapest.

The Czechs will face Denmark on Saturday in Baku.

This is so far the best campaign for the Czechs at the tournament since 2012, when they also reached the quarter-finals.

Tomas Holes broke the deadlock after a free-kick was headed back across goal by Tomas Kalas.

Top goalscorer Patrik Schick added a second, scoring his fourth goal in the tournament.

The Dutch side had Matthijs de Ligt dismissed for a handball after video review before the opening goal.

The Netherlands are out in the first match of the knock-out stages after not qualifying for the Euros in 2016 and also missing the 2018 World Cup.(

  • Euro 2020: Why Foden missed England match against Czech

Euro 2020: Why Foden missed England match against Czech

Manchester City star Phil Foden missed England’s final group game against Czech Republic as he was on a yellow card.

If Foden had received another yellow in the game, he would have been suspended for England’s round of 16 clash.

The Three Lions did fine without the young attacker, winning 1-0 courtesy of a first half goal from Raheem Sterling.

England topped their group, with Croatia and Czech Republic finishing second and third respectively.

Those three teams from the group will be in the knockout stages, with Scotland missing out.

  • Euro 2020: England secure group win after 1-0 victory over Czech Republic

England secured top spot in Group D with a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic in London on Tuesday to enter the round of 16 at Euro 2020 in high spirits.

Raheem Sterling scored the sole goal of the match by heading in a superb assist by Jack Grealish.

The Three Lions remain in London for their round of 16 game on Tuesday and will face second-placed team in Group F.

This means they can face world champions France, holders Portugal or Germany.

“At some point you have to face the best teams. It is about challenging yourselves,” Sterling said regarding the possible opponents.

The Czechs finished third to secure a spot in the knock-out round in spite of being edged out on goals scored by Croatia, who won 3-1 against Scotland.

The Scots, in fourth, say goodbye to the tournament.

Sterling hit the post right after kick-off but he did not miss his chance in the 12th minute to open the scoring.

Jack Grealish bamboozled two Czech players before assisting Sterling’s simple header into the net.

England saw Harry Kane denied by goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik’s stretched left arm just before Jordan Pickford made a flying save to keep England ahead.

Pickford, however, just watched when Tomas Soucek sent a dangerous effort narrowly wide of the far post.

England’s tempo dropped in the second period, while the Czechs were also not very inspired after the break.

Their top scorer at the tournament Patrik Schick was isolated up front.

His replacement, Tomas Pekhart, had the first serious attempt at goal of the second half in the 83rd minute and shot wide.

England, on the other hand, scored with Jordan Henderson but his goal was ruled out for offside.

“I think there are positives from the game. We kept the ball better today. It gave us more attacking options,” Sterling said.

Sterling praised young team-mate Bukayo Saka, who almost reached Grealish’s cross to head in the first goal.

“I thought Bukayo Saka was brilliant. I told him after the game that he got in the pockets of space, drove at people, he was direct and that’s what you need.”

Saka, chosen as Man of the Match, said the “manager told me to go out and express myself” and emphasised it was important the team would remain at Wembley.

“We have a lot of confidence playing here and the fans are like an extra man for us,” he said.

Manager Gareth Southgate was “super impressed” with Saka and was satisfied with his team.

“We wanted to win the group and we wanted to stay at Wembley —- we’ll wait and see who we play,” he said.

England missed Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell because the pair went into self-isolation.

This had followed their interaction with Chelsea team-mate Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for coronavirus after England played Scotland last Friday.

They are set to be released from quarantine on Tuesday.

Czech Republic coach Jaroslav Silhavy said they were expecting “early pressure and it came. For the goal that we conceded, we did not cover Sterling at all.”

But he added they had to “look at it positively” as the team achieved what they wanted.

“We qualified with a game to spare and competed against England for first place,” Silhavy said.
