Court nullifies election of Buhari’s ex-aide, orders INEC to recognise Dambazau’s son

A Federal High Court in Kano on Thursday nullified the candidature of former presidential aide, Kawu Sumaila, as the elected representative of Sumaila/Takai federal constituency of Kano in the House of Representatives.

Sumaila, a former Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly matters, won the election last February on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court, however, ordered the electoral commission, INEC, to recognise Shamsuddeen Dambazau as the APC candidate for the position.

Dambazau, a son of the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, had sued INEC, APC and Sumaila challenging the nomination of the latter as the candidate of APC.

He told the court through his counsel, Nuraini Jimoh, that Sumaila contested for Kano South senatorial seat and lost to Kabiru Gaya.

Sumaila, who was represented by his counsel, Auwal Tofa, declined to comment on the judgment.

Sumaila had indeed contested the Kano south senatorial ticket of the APC. He lost to a serving senator, Kabiru Gaya.

Later, the state chapter of APC compensated him with House of Representatives ticket of the Sumaila/Takai federal constituency which is also within the Kano South senatorial district.

The judge, however, ruled that the action of the APC was illegal as the ex-presidential aide did not participate in the APC primary for the House of Representatives.

The judge, Lewis Allagoa, ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Sumaila.

  • Crime: Dambazau seeks enforcement of law against illegal possession of firearms

The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, has called for strict enforcement of the law against illegal possession of firearms in the country.

Dambazau made the call as a guest at the monthly meeting of the Inspector-General of Police with Commissioners of Police and above on Wednesday in Abuja.

“We must ensure the enforcement of law against illegal possession of firearms in Nigeria.

“There is a huge number of illegal weapons in circulation in the country that come from Libya, Chad and Mali.

“Firearms is a driver to violence, so there is a need to address the current situation that we are in,”he said.

He said that the Nigeria Police had the capacity to fight crimes in the country which it had demonstrated in foreign operations in which its personnel took part.

He alleged that people who committed crimes in the country rarely faced prosecution and punishments for their acts.

The minister urged the police to take the issue of prosecution and conviction of criminals seriously to check crime rate in the country.

“We must do all that we can in the area of discreet investigation of cases.

“I am aware of the issue of funding, we cannot have a good police when the funds are not there,”he said.

He blamed the performance of some policemen on the process of recruitment where profiling of persons recruited was not thorough.

“Recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force is interfered with, these are issues we need to look at,” he said.

He urged the police to strengthen its relationship with the public for better service delivery to the people.

Dambazau also advised Nigerians to stop politicising the issue of security, adding that the police needed the support of the media and the public to discharge its responsibilities.

On herdsmen and farmers clashes, Dambazau said that there was a need for a multidimensional approach to address the problem.

He said that the issue was regional and not religious, but resource sharing that had to do with land and water.

The Minster said that the country was experiencing serious security challenges that were not new but of serious concern to the Federal Government.

“It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to provide adequate security for its citizens,” he said.

  • Dambazau, heads of agencies meet over internal security challenges

The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, on Tuesday in Abuja, held a crucial closed-door meeting with heads of internal security agencies over the security challenges in the country.

Speaking before the meeting, Mr. Dambazau, a retired lieutenant general, expressed concern over the current security situation in the country.

He said that the meeting was a follow-up to a meeting with state governors two weeks ago over the violent conflicts between farmers and headers in Benue and other places.

“One of the issues that came up in the communiqué was the issue of the proliferation of small arms and drug trafficking and abuse.

“We also found out that these two issues are triggers to the violence taking place in this country,” he said.

He said that without firearms and drugs, those perpetrating the violence would not have the courage to do so with such magnitude as seen.

“Without the fire arms and drugs, those who partake in violence would not have the courage to carry out the kind of violence taking place in this country,” he said.

The minister said that there was need to take urgent steps toward ensuring that the situation was dealt with accordingly.

“As a follow-up I called for this meeting so that we can examine and analyse (the situation) to see how best we can deal with the situation,” he said.

He said that according to the UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament, there were approximately 500 million assorted fire arms in West Africa and out of this figure, 350 million (representing 70 per cent) are in Nigeria.

He said that a large consignment of weapons had been smuggled from North Africa (in particular Libya) as a consequence of crises in that country.

“The situation is worsened by the insurgency in the North East because of the supply of weapons to the insurgents and terrorists there.

“Likewise the supply of weapon to the militants in the Niger Delta through exchange of stolen crude oil and supply by politicians to deal with their opponents,” he said.

He added that the issues required action especially as the 2019 elections draws nearer.

“It is very necessary for us to secure our country and of course a more challenging aspect of that which facilitate the smuggling of weapons, is our porous borders and this is a major challenge to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Nigeria Custom Service in particular but to all law enforcement agencies,” he said.

He said that the about 5,000 kilometres of the country’s borders were porous, hence the need to secure the country and its future.

Mr. Dambazau added that with the amount of weapons and drugs coming into Nigeria, “if we don’t do something now I am afraid things would be worse than this.”

He said that the farmers/herders conflicts, kidnapping, ethno-religious crises, terrorism, armed robbery, cultism and militancy all had something to do with weapons and drugs.

“We cannot do this without the continued partnership with state governments and religious organisations,” he said.

He said that the meeting would come up with strategies on how best to handle the problems.

The meeting had in attendance representatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Directorate of State Services, National Intelligence Agency, Nigeria Customs Service, and the United Nations Development Programme, among others.
