GWR: 16-year-old student performs record-breaking five-day dance marathon

A 16-year-old student Srushti Sudhir Jagtap (India), has broken the record for the longest dance marathon by an individual, with a time of 127 hours.

The previous record of 126 hours was set by Nepalese dancer Bandana Nepal in 2018.

Srushti’s dance marathon took place in her college’s auditorium, which was “jam packed with supporters,” as described by GWR Official Adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar.

“There were moments of her being too tired, but her parents were by her side all the time, spraying her face with water to keep her fresh,” Swapnil said. “Very impressive performance overall.”

Srushti’s attempt began on the morning of 29 May and continued until the afternoon of 3 June.

Srushti performed the Kathak dance style, which is one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance.

She decided to break this record because it was her “dream to represent India through dance.”

“I wanted to promote our Indian culture,” she explained.

The teenage girl prepared for her record attempt for 15 months. She was trained by her grandfather, Baban Mane, who taught her Yoga Nidra, a form of guided meditation also known as ‘yogic sleep’.

The goal of Yoga Nidra is to activate delta brainwaves – associated with healing and restoring the body during deep sleep – while awake. Srushti said this gave her “control over sleep.”

Srushti’s daily training regimen involved up to four hours of guided meditation, six hours of dance practise, and three hours of other exercise. She slept at 10 p.m. and woke up at 3 a.m. every day, getting around five hours of sleep per night.

Remarkably, Srushti performed two 126-hour dance marathons at home as part of her preparation. Because of this, she said that her official attempt was “not very difficult.”

Besides coffee, Srushti did not take any stimulants to aid her wakefulness during the record attempt. She drank coconut water and ate chocolate to “stay fresh.”

The final day of Srushti’s record attempt was particularly hard for her. “My body was not responding,” she said.

“All my body parts felt frozen and in pain. But mentally I was focused towards my goal.

“Due to strong practise, I was familiar with all the changes in my mind and body, so I was calm and composed until the end.”

The guidelines for ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Srushti could sleep or use the bathroom during the attempt.

Srushti took her rest breaks “mostly at midnight,” using the time to nap or talk to her parents “for brain refreshment.”

Without the strong support of her parents, Sudhir and Sanjivani Jagptap, Srushti said she might not have made it to the end.

  • Woman refuses to dance naked in the village after adultery

Mrs Sandra Iyenanye, a trader in Lagos State, has stood her ground and refused to go to the village to dance naked and perform other rites after owning up that she committed adultery.

Mrs Iyenanye rather approached an Igando Customary Court on Tuesday to dissolve her long-distance marriage to her husband Mr Vestus Iyenanye.

The petitioner, a resident of No. 8, Jaiyeoba St., urged the court to grant her a divorce from her husband on grounds of abandonment, cheating and negligence.

“My husband who is based in Austria has since abandoned the home. He has come home a total of four to five times since our marriage in 2019, he has once beat me up with a belt because of another woman.

“I found out he was seeing another woman in 2010 and I confronted him only for him to beat me up with a belt.

“I later ran to my uncle’s house for protection but my uncle mediated and settled our misunderstanding and my husband promised not to lay his hands on me again.

“After settling, he travelled back with a promise to come back a year later but he did not, so due to frustration we exchanged words on the phone. His family held on to what I said and termed it abominable and labelled me a bad wife.

“Unfortunately, the next time he would come back was 2022. But before then he stopped sending money for the upkeep of our children and left all responsibilities to me. All efforts to speak with him proved abortive.

“The one time I called, it was a lady that picked the call and she later told me I was waiting for my husband in vain and that I should better move on. She said all types of spiteful and hurtful words to me which my husband didn’t see any wrong in it,” the petitioner narrated.

She further told the court that throughout the period her mother was sick and later died, her husband did nothing about it neither did he call or check up on her.

“He later sent meagre money after I expressed my displeasure, and in his words, he said I should better be grateful as he didn’t even have money to send to me; that the money he sent was borrowed from his girlfriend.

“When I saw that my husband was not trying to make the marriage work nor even attend to my sexual needs, I had a one-time affair. His family said I must dance naked in the village square as atonement and pay the sum of N100,000. After the whole rites then I can be free to go.

“I asked my husband if he would still accept me, and he said no. Because of this, I want a divorce from him as I do not even intend to perform the rites either. It’s best we both go our separate ways and I be granted custody of the children,” Mrs Iyenanye said.

Standing in for the respondent was his brother, Mr Cobina Iyenanye, who had good things to say about his brother’s wife and sang praises of her.

“I commend her resilience and patience, she’s a good woman, she has tried, she is not a bad person; I only agreed to come to the court because I want them to separate without fights and all dues be given to the woman,” he said.

The Court President, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, adjourned the case until Aug. 2, for judgment.

Dance and let Dance, By Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi

    Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi
    Dance and let dance
    You own your rythm
    Live and let live
    Your life is your own
    Eat and let eat
As long as it is your food
    Sleep and let sleep
As long as it is with your eyes
Why not Dance and let dance?
What quarrel should I have with your legs?
Your arms? Your waist? Why should the twist of your hips bother me so?
Is it the joy I see in your eyes?
The orgasmic ecstasy I see in every movement of your body?
The sense that you do not care?
People think you do not care
Not about the rivers of blood flowing through the country
    The screams of the tortured
The wails of those who mourn
The silent cries of the voiceless
The diseases that have arrived and those on the way
It does not matter what they think
    Think and let think
    Care and let care
    Dance and let dance
Azonto, Shoki, Shaku Shaku, Zanku, Gbese
Whichever way your body wants to move
Only you can take it there
    The peace we seek
    The sanity we yearn for
    The wisdom that eludes us
    Can only come from within
From our love, passion, creativity, courage, selflessness, freedom, gratitude and all those things that bring us alive
It cannot be policed, censored or controlled
That right there is the problem
We leave real problems and manufacture crisis where none exists
We leave the leprosy patient to chase after the sufferer of ring worm
No matter how many storms rage or how hard the rain falls, the sun still shows up
    Dance and let dance
    We are not judges
We are not the jury of life
    Dance your own dance
Share your own joy or keep it to yourself
    Let it be your right
Don’t tell others when, how, why or where to dance
    Dance and let dance
    Dance like David
    Dance like the devil himself
    Who cares?
When we all get to the gates of heaven, we will be asked
How many times we were kind, how many wounds we healed and how many tears we wiped away
We will be asked about the screams, wails and cries and what we did to help
No one will ask how many times we danced
Let us think about this and prepare our answers
In other words, let us mind our own business
    Dance and let dance
See, my moves are slicker than yours!
