[Video/photos]: Kogi indigenes protest against Dangote Group

The conflict between the Kogi State government and the Dangote Group over the ownership of Obajana cement took a new turn in the early hours of Tuesday, as citizens of the state occupied all mining sites across the state to express their plight over the alleged exploitation of the Dangote Group.

This comes just hours after it was reported that the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and the Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, were meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

There were massive crowds with various placard inscriptions urging the state and federal governments to press Dangote Group for justice.

The protest has led to the halting of trading activities in various areas in the State.

They are urging the state not to back out until the state recovers Obajana Cement, the largest cement plant in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Recall that the state government sealed off the cement factory last week, claiming ownership of the company due to a breach of contract agreements and non-involvement of the state assembly.

According to the report of a committee of inquiry set up by the state government, documents show that the agreements entered into between Dangote Group and the previous government in 2002/2003 are invalid. According to the government, the State Assembly was not involved in the negotiations.

The government’s statement noted that Dangote Group has failed to meet the terms of the agreement. It was stated that 90% of the shares were transferred to Dangote Group, with the remaining 10% reserved for the government and citizens.

Although the state government has stated that it is open to negotiation, Dangote Group has reacted stating that it owns the entire company.

protesters seemed adamant throughout the protests stating that there is no point in negotiating. The protesters, some of whom were crying, claimed that the Dangote Group had wreaked havoc on their lands. They claimed that Dangote trailers kill their people almost every day, and that mining operations leave them with erosions that take their lands and endanger their lives.

They are urging all international organizations to assist the state government in obtaining justice for the people. They have also vowed that they will continue the protests until justice is done.

  • Kogi Govt moves to recover cement company from Dangote

Kogi Govt moves to recover cement company from Dangote

The Kogi State Government on Thursday moved to recover Obajana Cement Plant from Dangote Company Limited.

The government’s resolution is contained in the report of the Specialised Technical Committee on the Evaluation of the Legality of the Alleged Acquisition of Obajana Cement Company by Dangote Cement Company.

The detailed report was submitted to Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi in September. The report was presented to the public by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Folashade Ayoade, on Thursday in Lokoja.

Ayoade said, “Recovery of the state’s Obajana Cement Company Plc from Dangote Cement Company Limited became imperative at this point in time.”

The SSG revealed with documents that the purported transfer of Obajana to Dangote Industries Limited was “invalid, null and void”.

She disclosed that in the report, three Certificates of Occupancy for Obajana Cement Company Plc, which was solely owned by the Kogi State Government at the time, were used to obtain a loan of N63billion by Dangote.

According to her, the committee, in view of its findings, has, therefore, recommended that Kogi State should take steps to recover Obajana Cement Company from the Dangote Group.

The Committee, chaired by the SSG, also recommended that: “Kogi State Government should take steps to recover all accrued dividends from profits made over the years, including accrued interest on same.

“Kogi State Government should take steps to cancel the existing seven Certificates of Occupancy in the name of Dangote Cement Company.”

Stressing the aberration in the arrangement, the SSG said, “Agreement between Kogi State Government of Nigeria and Dangote Industries Limited, dated 30th July 2002.

“And, supplemental agreement dated 14th February 2003, as contained in Exhibit 71 of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report, purporting the transfer of Obajana Cement Company Plc to Dangote Industries Limited, are all invalid, null and void.

“There is no evidence of consideration paid by Dangote Industries Limited to Kogi State Government from the alleged transfer of Obajana Cement Company Plc and no dividend was paid to the state from the profits realised from the inception of Dangote Cement Company Plc to date.

“By the assignment of the three certificates of occupancy, the title in Obajana Cement Company Plc, still vests in Kogi State Government as the sole owner.

“The three documents were used to obtain a loan of sixty-three billion naira only (63,000,000,000.00) to finance the construction of the cement plant in Obajana.”

Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Matthew Kolawole, specifically noted that the acquisition of the Obajana Cement Company by Dangote was without the resolution of the House of Assembly, which made the process null and void.

“It is clear that you cannot sell a state government property of any form without the resolution of the Kogi State House of Assembly.

“All the transfer process of the share capital to Dangote from Obajana by the previous administration was without any law backing it by the state House of Assembly,” Kolawole stated.

In his remarks, Gov. Yahaya Bello said that he had taken the bold step, in line with his mandate to safeguard the lives and livelihood of the people of Kogi State, including residents, and to ensure their wellbeing.

Bello said this was also coming on the heels of protests by the people of the state who felt they had been suppressed and marginalised by the Dangote Group who had come to rip them off.

The governor, however, said that the state was open to discussions once Dangote Company Plc is ready to come clean.

“We received several petitions from the general public over this particular subject matter. In the past five to six years, all efforts to sit with the proprietors of the Dangote Conglomerate failed.

“We set up a committee to look into this and invited the Dangote company to discuss with them and tell them the imminent dangers they are exposing the people to, but it all fell on deaf ears.

“I am here to defend my people, and from all reports, it is clear that Obajana Cement Company does not belong to Dangote,” Bello declared.

Dangote emerges the Most Valuable Brand in Nigeria for 5th year

A brand and marketing research firm known as Top 50 Brands Nigeria has listed Dangote as the Most Valuable Brand in the country for the 5th year.

Dangote came out as the winner in the outcome of the 2022 corporate brand evaluation conducted by the firm.

A statement by the organizer stated that Dangote, MTN Nigeria and Globacom are the topmost brands in Nigeria.

The statement explained that Dangote emerged top with an aggregate score of 83.7 brand strength measurement index score. This was followed by MTN, Globacom and Access Bank in fourth place.

Others among the top 10 are Airtel Nigeria, Coca-Cola, Zenith Bank, GTCO, First Bank and UBA at fifth to tenth positions respectively, the statement added.

It said, “The annual top brands evaluation report which is now like a report card, with which top corporate brands have an independent opinion about their brand performance, from the consumers’ points of view has also become a sort of ‘bragging’ right and a source of pride for the brands that made the top 50 league table, particularly, those that took the lead.

“The annual top brand evaluation is a qualitative, non-financial estimation of value of top corporate brands in the country. A measure of consumers’ perceptions.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Dangote Group is a Nigerian multinational industrial conglomerate, founded by Aliko Dangote.

It is the largest conglomerate in West Africa and one of the largest on the African continent. The group employs more than 30,000 people, generating revenue in excess of US$4.1 billion in 2017.

The company was founded in 1981 as a trading enterprise, importing sugar, cement, rice, fisheries, and other consumer goods for distribution in the Nigeria market.

The group moved into manufacturing in the 1990s, starting with textiles, moving onto flour milling, salt processing and sugar refining by the end of the decade.

The company next moved into cement production, growing rapidly and moving into other African countries. A high degree of vertical integration is a hallmark of Dangote Group’s operating strategy.

The group now owns and operates over 18 subsidiaries, operating in ten African countries.

Dangote Cement, is one of these subsidiaries that is listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, with its market capitalization accounting for almost 20 percent of the total capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Dangote Group is headquartered in Lagos.

In 2016, Dangote signed a contract with CNOOC group for the installation of a large underwater offshore pipeline.

The pipeline, when completed will extend from Bonny (Rivers State) through Ogedegbe, Olokola to Lekki and the Escravos Lagos pipeline, finally terminating at the West Africa Gas Pipeline.

Dangote hands over errant drivers for prosecution

Dangote Group on Sunday said the company’s drivers’ patrol team has made several arrests of its errant drivers that engaged in illegal activities and handed them over to relevant authorities for prosecution.

The company made the disclosure in a statement signed by its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Mr Anthony Chiejina, in Lagos.

Chiejina also urged the general public to assist with relevant information to help curb the trend of unscrupulous drivers who also constituted themselves into menace to other road users.

He recalled that the company had in an effort to carry the public along in addressing the activities of these drivers, announced monetary rewards for persons that would plead to the arrest of erring drivers by the law enforcement agents.

Chiejina revealed that among several others, the team, recently in the North Central Zone of the country arrested both a driver and his truck carrying fully loaded illegal haulage of timber and handed them over to the police.

According to Chiejina, the driver was subsequently charged to a Magistrate Court in Akwanga, Nasarawa, for criminal breach of trust.

He said that the driver was sentenced to four months jail term after he pleaded guilty.

Chiejina said that the presiding magistrate on the case ordered that the truck and load be released to the company and owner respectivel.

He advised the company to file a civil case against the owner of the goods.

“Also, in the South-West region, the patrol team noticed a third party truck, with Dangote logo on it, parked inside a private company yard in Ode Remo, Ogun recently, while offloading granite stone.

“The team reported the case at Ode Remo police station and got both the driver and the truck were arrested and driver had also been charged to court.

“The Dangote drivers’ patrol team has made several more arrests and handed the offending drivers to police and other relevant authorities for prosecution.

“Dangote management, has therefore, renewed the warnings to those who illegally transport materials on Dangote trucks.

”Such unauthorised goods shall be confiscated while such drivers and owners would face the full extent of the law,” he said.

Chiejina added that to clarify its position, the management has gone on to list its products and goods which its over 10,000 trucks operating across the country and the neighbouring West African countries could convey.

He stated that Dangote trucks were permitted to transport only the following materials: Dangote Cement Plc – Dangote Cement, Limestone, High Grade Gypsum, and Coal.

Others include Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc- Dangote Sugar; NASCON Allied Industries Plc – Dangote Salt and DanQ Seasoning; and Dangote Packaging Limited – Bags.

  • Nigeria begins Urea Fertiliser export to US, Brazil, others

Nigeria begins Urea Fertiliser export to US, Brazil, others

Nigeria has commenced the exportation of Urea-based fertiliser to the U.S, India, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, due to the full operation of the Dangote Fertiliser Plant, in Lagos.
Mr Devakumar Edwin, the Executive Director, Strategy Capital Projects and Portfolio Development, Dangote Group disclosed this on Sunday when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed led a team of journalists on a working tour of the Dangote Fertiliser Plant in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
Newsmen report the minister and his team also took a tour of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals also located in the Free Trade Zone of Lagos State in Ibeju Lekki.
Newsmen report that President Muhammadu Buhari on March 22 inaugurated the Dangote Fertiliser Plant which is Africa’s largest granulated Urea fertiliser complex to produce three million metric tonnes per annum in the first phase.
Speaking at a newly constructed jetty for the urea export, Edwin said the plant has the capacity to meet the 1.5 million metric tonnes per annum current level of fertiliser consumption in Nigeria and also export the product.
He said the Dangote Urea, made from natural gas is an export quality product with global standards, hence the demand for it in the global market.
Edwin assured that the plant would continue to meet local demand for the product at an affordable price in order to make Nigeria self-reliant in food production.
Newsmen reports that at the jetty, the team witnessed a ship being loaded with Urea for export to Argentina.
Speaking at the event, the minister corroborated Edwin, saying that Nigeria is currently self-sufficient in the production of Urea and it is the leading producer of the fertiliser in Africa
“Before this administration came into office in 2015, Nigeria had a fertiliser shortfall of about 3.5 million tonnes per annum (over 6 million tonnes per annum are required in the country).
“Thanks to the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative launched by President Buhari, indigenous companies like Indorama and Notre – with a combined capacity of over 2.5 million tonnes per annum,” he said
Mohammed noted that after visiting the facilities, one could conveniently conclude that Dangote was leading the country’s industrial revolution.
He said the coming into being of the massive industrial complexes as the Dangote Fertiliser Company and the Refinery were made possible by the enabling environment provided by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Today, new businesses are springing up in all sectors, thanks to a conducive business environment.
“Under this administration, the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) has implemented over 150 reforms, moving Nigeria up 39 places on the World Bank Doing Business index since 2016.
“Mr President also signed the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 (CAMA 2020) – Nigeria’s most significant business legislation in three decades,” he said.
The minister added that the result of the favourable business environment was the birth of new businesses as the Dangote Fertiliser Plant and the 650,000 barrels per day oil refinery.

Dangote Group trains 150 indigenous engineers in refinery operations

The Management of Dangote Oil Refinery Company (DORC) says about 150 indigenous engineers have been trained in refinery operations in preparation for the take-off of its Lagos Refinery and Petrochemical Plant.

Mr Mohan Kumar, the company’s Director of Human Capital Management and Project Support, made this known at a news conference in Lagos on Monday while presenting 22 engineers who returned from Mumbai, India.

Kumar said the young engineers were trained at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. in India on how to manage the operations of the refinery.

He added that the engineers had gathered fundamental practical knowledge about refinery.

According to him, the engineers are recruited and trained to witness the building of the refinery from scratch.

He said the engineers spent two months in classroom training and three months on the job training.

Kumar explained that the 22 engineers were trained by experts who had over 45 years experience in refinery operations, stressing that the training became imperative due to the commitment of Dangote Group to promote local content by developing indigenous capacity.

He added that “the engineers are expected to also transfer the skills acquired to other Nigerians when the refinery takes off.

“The 22 engineers arrived from Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Mumbai in India, where the last set of 150 employees trained in various areas of petroleum and petrochemical refining.’’

Kumar noted that another set of 600 engineers would be sent for training before the end of April.

According to him, the refinery will produce 780 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) of Polypropylene, 500 KTPA of Polyethylene, while the fertiliser project will produce 3.0 million tonnes of urea per annum.

He explained that “the refinery will also have the largest sub-sea pipeline infrastructure in the world with capacity to handle three billion cubic metres of oil annually.”

Dangote Refinery is expected to save Nigeria 12 billion dollars annual import substitution and create 4,000 direct jobs, as well as reduce prices of petroleum products after completion.

The project is located in Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State on a vast land mass of 2,200 hectares, an area eight times bigger than the entire Victoria Island in Lagos.

  • Dangote, Niger Govt sign $450m MoU on sugar production

In another bold move for self-sufficiency in sugar production through the government’s backward integration policy, the Pan African Conglomerate, Dangote Group on Wednesday in Minna, Niger State signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government for the establishment of a jumbo $450million state-of–art and fully integrated sugar complex.

On completion, according to the President of the Group, Aliko Dangote, the project would generate over 15,000 jobs in the state and bring about a complete economic turn-around for the state.

The $450million pact which was signed at the Government House will see the company producing raw sugarcane on 16,000 hectares of land at Lavun Local Government through an out-grower scheme.

The company, which is currently operating out-grower scheme in rice production in a number of states, has Africa’s largest sugar refinery in Lagos and a sugar cane plantation in Numan, Adamawa State.

Mr. Dangote said his investment was informed by his company’s firm belief in the potentials of the Nigerian economy, adding that the new outlay would add value and create jobs for Nigerians.

He commended the State Governor, Alh. Abubakar Bello for his foresight and efforts to woo investors to Niger State, noting that “the Dangote’s Integrated Sugar Project in Niger State will also include the establishment of integrated sugar mills, generate power, produce molasses, ethanol fuel, biomass and produce animal feeds.”

In his remarks, Governor Bello said the deal would revolutionize agriculture in his state and Nigeria, expressing joy that the MoU was signed during his own administration, while describing Dangote as the liberator of the Nigerian economy and a dependable partner.

The governor then urged Dangote Group to explore other investment opportunities available in the state, just as he announced that the state was opened for multi-sectoral investments.

Representative of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Alhaji Aminu Bisala said Dangote is the biggest private sector supporter of the Nigerian economy, and Federal Government policies.

He said the Federal Government was comfortable with the numerous investments efforts of the Dangote Group.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Niger State Traditional Council, Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Abubakar Yahyah said he was elated about the huge investment coming to the state, while praying God to bless the Dangote Group more.

Just last week, the conglomerate had sponsored an investment summit in the State, which was attended by former Presidents Abdulsalami Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo and the then Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, who described the private sector as key to the country’s economic development.

Group Managing Director of Dangote Sugar Plc, Engr. Abdullahi Sule stated that the MoU would be a game changer for Niger State economy and Nigeria as a whole.

He said the integrated sugar mills would have the capacity to produce 160,000 metric tons of raw sugar.

According to him, the Dangote Sugar Refinery is developing a sugar backward integration plan through the production of 1.5MT/PA in ten years in Nasarawa, Adamawa, Kogi, Kwara, Taraba and Niger states respectively.

The Group’s Executive Director Stakeholders’ Management and Corporate Communication Ahmed Mansur had also announced that the Group was investing over $1billion in the agricultural sector in the country, specifically in rice, sugar, tomato and dairy productions.

Niger State Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry Rahmatu Muhammad Yar’Adua said that the deal with Dangote Group would help grow the agricultural sector and create direct and indirect jobs in the state.

It would be recalled that the Group’s foray into sugar business began in 1981. It has injected over $104million into the Savannah Sugar Company Limited it acquired from government in 2003. Savannah Sugar this year alone, produced 20,000 metric tons of raw sugar from its plantation.

  • Contravention: FG to probe Dangote’s company, 6 others

Contravention: FG to probe Dangote’s company, 6 others

Federal government has reportedly threatened to prosecute Alheri Engineering Company Limited, a telecoms business unit of Dangote Group and six other companies for contravention Nigerian communications laws, according to Technology Times.

Alheri is the telecoms business unit of the business group owned by businessman Aliko Dangote which was granted a 3G licence by national telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Mr Tony Ojobo, director of Public Affairs at NCC was quoted by Technology Times as saying that a 14-day pre-enforcement notice has been issued the seven companies for allegedly operating with expired licences.

NCC said that the alleged default by the affected communications companies contravenes Section 31(1) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 — the law guiding telecoms operation in the country.

NCC cited the relevant provisions of the Section to read thus: “No person shall operate a communications system of facility nor provide a communications service in Nigeria unless authorized to do so under a communications licence or exempted under regulations made by the Commission under this Act.”

Meanwhile, “Alheri Engineering Company Ltd, a Dangote Group company, was issued a third generation (3G) licence by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2007, allowing the company to provide carrier and 3G wireless services,” the website of Dangote Group says about its telecoms unit.

According to NCC, the six other affected companies include First Astria Comm. Tech Limited; Elcomserve Nigeria Limited; Egogo Nigeria Limited; EM West Africa Limited; TC Africa Telecoms Networks Ltd and MJ Global Network Services Limited.

Alheri Engineering came into limelight in 2007 when it won a 3G licence for $150 million in a spectrum sale by NCC.

The Dangote company pulled off this feat alongside Celtel Nigeria Ltd. (now Airtel Nigeria); Globacom Ltd and MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd that also won the same licence at $150 million each.

The Alheri 3G licence was later sold by the company to Etisalat Nigeria by the Dangote Group after the former’s telecoms market entry into the country as the fifth GSM Network operator.

Meanwhile, NCC has threatened to prosecute the affected companies for allegedly operating with expired licences.

According to Ojobo, “Pre-enforcement notice is hereby given to the said companies to within 14 days from the date of this publication commence the renewal process of their expired licences. Failing which, the Commission may consider appropriate enforcement action, including, but not limited to reporting your activities to the Nigeria Police for investigation and prosecution.”

According to him, “Members of the public who deal with these companies are hereby advised to insist on sighting a valid licence or evidence of licence renewal process.”
