  • Investors abandoning their businesses over fear of being kidnapped – Dangote

Investors abandoning their businesses over fear of being kidnapped – Dangote

President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has advised the government to tackle insecurity challenges in the country, particularly kidnapping, stressing that investors are now abandoning their businesses over fear of being kidnapped.

Dangote made this revelationn at the ongoing Agric Expo and Conference, organised by Nigeria Agribusiness Group in collaboration with other private and public sector agencies.

He was represented by Executive Director, Public Sector, Dangote Group, Mosul Ahmed, who spoke on ‘Challenges Facing Agribusiness Investors in Nigeria.’ He lamented the spate of kidnapping on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, which he said has made investors, who own commercial farms to practically abandon them for fear of being attacked or kidnapped.

It will be recalled that kidnapping has been on the increase across the country, particularly the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, forcing the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris to deploy a large number of policemen on that axis.

He said: “The security situation in the country is discouraging agribusiness investors. Most of the people that own large farms on the Kaduna-Abuja Road have abandoned their farms due to the menace of kidnapping.”

He also lamented bottlenecks in access to land by agribusiness investors, which he traced to the Land Use Act, and cautioned that if the Act was not revisited, it will impede the expected and desired diversification of the economy.

He therefore, advised that government at all levels should begin to work together, where necessary, on proactive approach, particularly on securing land for commercialised agriculture. He also accused governments at all levels of lack of cooperation and protection of investors in the agricultural sector, noting that there is no synergy on inter-governmental relationship for better performance and productivity by the sector.

“Agriculture cannot thrive in this country, except there is cooperation between all the agencies of government. Inter-governmental cooperation is lacking in terms of galvanising the kind of support that investors need in the sector,” he stated.

  • Please monitor our truck drivers on the high way – Dangote begs Nigerians

    …sets up hotline for reports

Worried by incessant road accidents and usage of its trucks for conveying contraband products, the management of Dangote Industries Limited (Dangote Group) on Tuesday appealed to members of the general public to help monitor drivers of its truck on the highway.

The company appealed to the public to report such erring drivers to a dedicated hotline with a promise to compensate genuine callers whose petitions lead to the arrest of defiant drivers.

It specifically noted that trucks belonging to it Dangote Cement are only allowed to carry Cement, High-Grade Gypsum and Coal while those belonging to Dangote Sugar (NASCON) are authorized to carry only Salt and Dan Q seasoning.

The company explained further that trucks belonging to Agrosacks, the bags producing arm of Dangote group, can only carry bags, belonging to Dangote flour Mills, Wheat, Flour and Danvita.

This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday released by Dangote Group.

The statement reads in part: “Please call Dangote Industries Limited Management hotline on all information regarding illegal haulage activities on 01- 2123567, 08070188000, 08170023846, 08152093133 and or email customercare@dangote.com

“Dangote Industries Limited also wishes to warn those that illegally transport materials on Dangote truck that such unauthorized goods, when found, shall be confiscated and such owners prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the company recently intercepted one of the company’s truck loaded with contrabands in Ibadan, arrested the drivers and handed them over the Nigerian customs for further investigations and prosecutions. The arrest was effected by a crack team of the company’s security personnel led by its Chief Security Officer who acted on intelligence, bordering on misconduct by some of its drivers.

While handing over the drivers and his motor boy to the Customs Authority, Assistant General Manager, in charge of Security Services, CSP Ali Garba explained that the company has a surveillance section that monitors all his trucks and drivers’ activities.

  • 2019: Dangote speaks tough, says ‘I am not a politician, my loyalty to Buhari remains intact’

2019: Dangote speaks tough, says ‘I am not a politician, my loyalty to Buhari remains intact’

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has distanced himself from reports saying he will run for the Presidency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 2019.

Dangote made the denial while reacting to a report that officials of PDP think-tank programme set up by former President, Goodluck Jonathan have contacted him to be the party’s presidential flag bearer in 2019.

Speaking with Daily Times, Dangote said: “I am an entrepreneur. My passion is to create jobs for Nigerians and not otherwise.

“I am not interested in politics and this is authoritative. No member of any think tank committee has contacted me. People should stop dropping my name for the 2019 presidency.

“This whole thing is an attempt by people who do not like me. They are doing all these with a view to putting me on a collision course with President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling party. They are people who are jealous of the successes I have so far recorded in business.

“My passion is for business development, provision of jobs and wealth creation, not politics. I have never shown interest in politics. I’m not interested in politics. I am not a politician. My passion has always been business and business.

“Buhari is like a father to me. Nobody should try to set me on a collision course with President Buhari. That will not work. I have high regard and respect for the President.

“For emphasis once again, I am not a politician. I can’t and won’t confront President Buhari. They should leave me out of any high wire politics and horse trading.

“I also seize this opportunity to warn name droppers to desist from their infamous act. They should stop using my name for politics. They should not set me on collision course with President Buhari and the government in power.

“By the time the ongoing Dangote refinery in Lagos and the sugar projects come on stream fully, there will be a great positive development and thousands of jobs created that will change the narrative in the country. That is my passion.”

  • FG urges Dangote to stop fuel importation by 2019

FG urges Dangote to stop fuel importation by 2019

The Federal Government has urged Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote group, to make sure that he achieves his target of ending fuel importation in the country by December 2019.

Minister of state for petroleum resources, Ibe Kachikwu, made the call when he visited the Dangote oil refinery site at Lekki free trade zone, Lagos state, on yesterday.

He said there would be more chances of meeting the 2019 target if the group is able to complete its refinery before the date.

He also said the government was ready to play its part as a responsible government to assist in making sure the project is completed before the scheduled date.

Kachikwu stated he has made a very firm commitment to Nigerians that importation of petroleum products will stop by 2019.

Responding, Dangote said with the minister’s assurance of government’s cooperation and support, the company would do all it could to complete the refinery in due time.

He said the company would go back to the drawing board and see what to do to make the target come to fruition “by fast tracking our processes.”

Dangote said the group is building the world’s largest single line refinery, the largest sub-sea pipeline infrastructure, petrochemical complex as well as the world’s second largest urea fertiliser plant.

He said the refinery, when completed, will have the capacity to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day with the petrochemical plant producing 780 KTPA polypropylene, 500 KTPA of polyethylene while the fertiliser project will produce 3.0 million metric tonnes of urea per annum (mmtpa).

  • Poverty grows with population in Nigeria – Dangote

Poverty grows with population in Nigeria – Dangote

The President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has raised concern over the growing rate of unemployment in Nigeria, a situation he said makes him lose his sleep at nights.

Dangote said this when a team of business executives from Lagos Business School (LBS), visited his multi-billion dollars refinery and petrochemical projects in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

What keeps me awake at nights is not really the enormity of business ideas running through my mind, but it is actually high rate of unemployment in the country.

It is an eyesore and I think we have collective responsibility to solve this problem”, Nation quoted him as saying.

Dangote noted that the nation’s growing population should have been a blessing if the youth energy is harnessed to drive growth, but regretted that poverty increases with the population.

The more poverty that you have in a society without education, the more criminals you breed.

It is surprising that poverty grows in this country as population grows, especially in the North where you have low income families bearing score of children they cannot cater for”, he added.

Dangote said it was not the duty of government to create jobs, stressing that creation of enabling environment for entrepreneurs to thrive should be the focus of any government.

Africa’s richest man said developed economies were not created by the government, but private sector which acts as drivers of growth and development.

He linked insurgency and militancy to unemployment, saying criminality would fester in a society where government does not encourage entrepreneurs to create jobs.

  • FG, Dangote, others sign N4.34bn MoU for reconstruction of Apapa Wharf road

FG, Dangote, others sign N4.34bn MoU for reconstruction of Apapa Wharf road

Following a special report on the deplorable state of the Apapa Wharf road by TheNewsGuru.com, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola on Saturday signed a N4.34 Billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dangote Group and other stakeholders for the reconstruction of the busy road.

The project is to be funded by AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd, an arm of the Dangote Group, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Flour Mills of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the site was handed over to the stakeholders for commencement of reconstruction works after the agreement was signed in Lagos.

Fashola explained that the gridlock in Apapa became compounded and had reached an unbearable level as transporters ignored the old system of moving cargo through rail to trucks and containers.

He said that the choice of the transporters to use road instead of rail for haulage increased gridlock, caused degeneration as well as well as hardship to residents of Apapa.

The minister commended the “leadership role’’ of the stakeholders to solve the complex problems in Apapa and its environs.

According to him, the situation has caused stress to residents, business owners and other stakeholders in the state.

“As a result of all these unsavory practices, we have reached a point of near total gridlock, it is difficult to move cargo in or out, difficult for residents to get home and this must stop,’’ he said.

Fashola said that it took time to reach an agreement on the project because the stakeholders were putting up an effective design that would address the drainage problem because the area was water logged.

“We have finished with the design, we now have a Bill of Quantity and the cost of the road is N4.34 billion to be funded and paid for by these three groups, Flour Mills of Nigeria, AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd and NPA,’’ he said.

The minister said that although the parties were funding the project, the Federal Ministry of Power Works and Housing would supervise it through all the stages to ensure quality and compliance with standards.

Fashola sought for the cooperation of all residents of Lagos and directed the Apapa Area Commander of the Nigerian Police Force, DSP My Nuru to apprehend reckless drivers who drive against traffic during the period of construction.

He also appealed to Nuru to tackle all bureaucracies that would affect free flow of traffic while apprehending offenders.

Fashola also appealed for synergy among law enforcement and traffic regulatory agencies for better traffic management to reduce stress on road users during the one-year duration of the project.

The Managing Director, Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr Paul Gbededo said that Wharf Road was the “most important road in the entire country’’ which needed more attention.

“This kind of road cannot be handled with levity,’’ he said.

Responding to issues of lack of holding bays raised by transport unions, the Managing Director of NPA, Ms. Hadiza Usman said that government would support the private sector to drive the initiative to set up new ones.
“We have received proposals on electronic management of holding bays, we are working through processes and we would soon conclude on that,’’ she said.

She said that tank farms that do not have holding bays for their trucks would soon be sanctioned.

Usman said that the NPA was also working on providing weigh bridges within the ports as well as enforce implementation in a few months to take care of problem of high axle load on the roads.

Mr Joseph Makonjuola, the Honorary Adviser to Dangote Group of Companies assured that the company would contribute its funding as part of its corporate Social responsibility and would still meet its tax obligations to government.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd, Mr Ashif Juma, while giving a brief of the two-kilometer road project said that rigid pavement would be used on the road.

He also assured that high quality materials that would withstand stress would be used.

Representatives of truck owners, transport unions, maritime operators, business owners in Apapa were among stakeholders present at the ceremony.

  • 6 tricks financial fraudsters use to steal your money

6 tricks financial fraudsters use to steal your money

You could have been the victim of this terrifying crime or had calls from some fraudsters, or most probably know someone who has been.

Usually, they will tell you they are your friend abroad and ask you to guess their names or even tell you they work with Dangote cement that there is this contract on offer they want you to grab.

There are so many phone scams these days that you would think the Nigerian Communications Commission Do-Not-Disturb policy is mere child’s play.

    ImageFile: BVN fraudster SMS
Scam SMS financial fraudsters send to victims

It is like clockwork. You sit down to eat dinner and your phone starts ringing incessantly or some disturbing text messages start bumping in for you to call a certain number to re-activate your Bank Verification Number (BVN).

Of course, they want your money. You might think, “how can anyone be tricked by these people?”

Well, it turns out that they use scientifically proven techniques to convince you or your elderly loved ones, that they are who they claim to be. They will convince you that they are trying to be helpful. They will even tell you they know you from your place of worship.

There are six techniques they use to convince you to give them your money. Do you know these six tricks?

    6 tricks phone scammers use

We do not want you to be the next victim of a phone scam. Nigerians lose millions of nairas every year to phone scams.

Here are six ways they convince you to pay up.

    1. They will call, tell you they are your friend abroad and ask you to guess their names or tell you “you need to re-activate your BVN”
    2. Any name you mention, they will go with it, and they will make you start even talking about the person you mentioned (that they do not know) the more. Then they will mention your names and share information about you to gain your trust
    3. They will welcome your skepticism, saying they understand your concerns
    4. Scammers will lie about who they are, and where they work, whether they say they are with Zenith, GTB, or Fidelity banks or they will tell you they are Dangote staffs, or some other reputable companies
    5. They will take their time to explain who they are and why they are calling
    6. They will ramp up their pressure and threats by changing the tone of their voice, especially when the narration is not going as they have planned it

It is really important that you never share personal information, such as your address, with anyone over the phone. Of course, never give your credit card information or bank account numbers to anyone, unless you contact them first.

    How to outwit phone scammers

    1. Stay cool, be in control of the phone call
    2. Do not let them rush you. At least waste the scammer’s airtime — a call offering a 10 million naira contract should last at least 5 or more hours (i.e. if you have the time anyways)
    3. But, most importantly, pay attention to your intuition

The most effective tool you have with phone scams is your power to hang up. If someone starts asking you for personal information or for money, immediately hang up.

If you are worried that the person calling could have been from your bank, go to your bank; or from a reputable company, find the genuine website of the company and look for contact information. Then, you call them.
