End banditry now, no room for excuses – Danjuma to Service Chiefs

Former Minister of Defence and Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, has asked Service Chiefs to end and terrorism and banditry across the country and return the country to the path of peace.

Danjuma made the call at the presentation of a book titled “Big Boots: Lessons from my Military Service” written by retired Maj.-Gen. Solomon Uduonwa, on Tuesday in Abuja.

The former military chief, who chaired the book presentation, said there must be no room for excuses in the efforts to end the lingering insecurity ravaging the country.

He extolled the virtues of the author and his commitment to excellence in his military career.

“Number one problem today, security and we must end the pandemic, stop the killings that are going on in our country as soon as possible.

“Those of you who are still serving no excuses and absolutely no,” he said.

Danjuma commended the military leadership for their efforts in addressing the various security challenges bedeviling the nation.

He also commended the armed forces for effective management their own pension.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, said the military was positioned and working tirelessly to restore peace across the country.

Musa added that the armed forces would continue to uphold the values of service, integrity and honor that define extreme military tradition.

“Let me at least also mention to our distinguished chairman that the armed forces of Nigeria is positioned, is willing, dedicated and committed in ensuring that we restore peace and security in our own dear country.

“We shall not be deterred and there are going to be challenges. But that  is why we are here.

“I want to assure you that we have learned a lot from your record, and very distinguished senior officers that have modeled us all through the years.

“We cannot afford to fail and we will not fail,” he said.

The CDS also extolled the virtues of the author, retired Gen. Uduonwa for his exemplary service to the army and the nation in general.

The author of the book, Udounwa, said he was motivated by the desire to document his experiences for the younger generation.

He said that the first factor that motivated him was that the military profession thrived on experiential learning.

He added that younger generations of military officers and soldiers required the experiences of those who served before them to learn strategy, administration, operational management, and the rest.

“If you don’t document your experiences, that could be lost and then those coming behind you might not be able to learn from all the exposure and all the training that you had while in service.

“So, my book is going to be of interest to serving personnel, to military historians to the academia for people who are interested in national and international security affairs, and for the general public.

    “So, that was the motivation”.

“I hope the younger generation of officers who are still serving will learn from some of the challenges I faced and how I was able to navigate through them.

“I hope they will learn that to serve in the military requires discipline, requires professionalism, requires integrity, requires character, requires courage, and so many other virtues that an officer must display while undertaking his duties,” he said.

Uduonwa explained that the title of the book “Big Boots” was informed by the size of his feet and boots in the military.

He said that he faced bullies in primary school but decided to unleash his big feet on one of the bullies and ended the reign of terror.

“Then when I joined the military, because my feet are very big, I was also given Big Boots, which went with me everywhere I served, and which I used in trampling on terrorists and every other threat to our national security,” he added.

NAN reports that the book presentation attracted the presence of the former service Chief like Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, Gen. Lucky Irabor, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya and other serving and retired top officers.

My goal for Colombia 2024 – Danjuma reveals

Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nigeria’s under 20 women’s team, the Falconets, says his goal is to win the coveted trophy at the FIFA under 20 women’s World Cup in Colombia.

He said that in spite of the consistent good results at the FIFA under 20 women’s World Cup, Nigeria is yet to win a trophy.

Nigeria is grouped with Germany, Venezuela, and the Korea Republic in the tournament scheduled for Aug. 31 to Sept. 22, in Colombia.

Danjuma, who spoke with FIFA on Tuesday, said that moving into the 2024 event in Colombia, his  players have set their eyes on breaking that streak.

The coach said the team was confident that now is  the right time to emulate the opportunities and events of 2010 and 2014.

“I am certain Africa will stand at the top of the world for the first time,” he said.

“They just have one goal in mind at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, to hoist the trophy.

“As I approach my 61st birthday, I am embarking on a mission to win the most desired title in an age category in which I have invested heavily since 2017.

“I am positive we are on the right track.

“Every tournament, we showcase top players such as Asisat Oshoala, who was our star performer at the 2014 Under 20 World Cup.

“I am confident that at least one other ‘Agba Baller’ (football legend), as our fans call her, will emerge in Colombia,” the coach told FIFA.

Danjuma was in charge of Nigeria at the Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica in 2022, when the Falconets were knocked out following a 2-0 defeat by Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

“We have worked a great deal on our efficiency in front of goal as that’s what was missing two years ago.

“Our opponents were not stronger than us, but they knew how to handle decisive moments better, and that made all the difference,”he said

“Our preparations are going extremely well. We have been focusing on the psychological aspect, and how to approach the competition in particular.

“We will come up against some tough teams, so we need to be on top of our game mentally, from the word go. The players are picking up tactics more quickly, and the team spirit is high.

The Falconets were runners-up in 2010 and 2014; the Africans have set their sights on the world title.

“I think we’re closing in on our goal. As Africans, we have a spiritual perspective,“he said.

Insecurity: Now there is evidence our security operatives cannot protect us – Gen Danjuma

Former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), has said there’s abundant evidence on what he said that our security operatives cannot protect Nigerians.

TheNewGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that few years back Gen Danjuma had call on Nigerians to arm themselves against insurgents.

Danjuma spoke on Saturday in Wukari during the installation of a new monarch.

According to him, Our country is under siege by armed bandits.

“When some few years ago I warned that the armed forces are either not capable or unwilling to protect us and that we must defend ourselves, the first denial about what I said came from the ministry of defence.

“They said I was lying and they set up a kangaroo board of inquiry to investigate the truth or otherwise of what I said.“

They invited me to come and testify but I did not go. They wrote their report which state that I was only speculating and that there was no evidence. But now there is evidence.

“The whole country now is being overrun and one very clear thing that is happening now is that these foreign invaders are destroying everything and our government allowed them to come into the country.

  • Buhari meets T.Y. Danjuma at Aso Villa

Buhari meets T.Y. Danjuma at Aso Villa

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday met behind closed doors with former Minister of Defence, retired Gen. T. Y. Danjuma, at the State House, Abuja.

Mr Sunday Aghaeze, the Personal Assistant to the President (Photography), confirmed this via pictorial reports on the meeting.

The agenda of the meeting was unknown to State House correspondents as at the time of filing this report.

It was however gathered the meeting may not be unconnected with the ongoing critical consultations with major stakeholders in the country aimed at finding lasting solutions to the security and socio-economic challenges.

The President had on Oct. 23 presided over a crucial virtual meeting with former Nigerian leaders at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

The former leaders, who participated in the meeting virtually from their homes included Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan and Earnest Shonekan.

Buhari had also met with members of the nation’s security and intelligence community, on Oct. 22 in Abuja, and later addressed the nation on the ENDSARS protests embarked upon by some aggrieved youths in the country.

  • Obaseki’s Endorsement: Edo PDP begs Secondus to call Umahi, Danjuma, others to order

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the National Chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus, to call some top members of the party to order over their endorsement of the re-election bid of the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Dan Orbih, made the call on Sunday, in a letter titled “Edo 2020 Election Under Threat. Saboteurs Within!”

His concern is apparently over the endorsement of the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), by a member of the BoT of the PDP, Senator Daisy Danjuma, in Lagos last week, and Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State.

He described their action as “open treachery, condemnable and smacks of indiscipline and ingratitude” and a threat to the party’s chance to recapture the state from crisis-ridden ruling APC, after almost 12 years in opposition.

“As you are aware, Edo State is holding its governorship election later in the year. Edo PDP has been in opposition in the state since 2008 and from the opinion polls we conducted, this year, 2020, represents our brightest chance of winning the state back.

“The party in government is engrossed in a fierce battle of supremacy between the governor, Governor Obaseki and his national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

“Their “fight” has seriously affected governance to the extent that even the state house of assembly only has 10 out of 24 members seating even though they won 24/24 seats in the last elections. Not fewer than 6 council chairmen have been sacked as well as at least 4 members of state executive council because of their “questionable loyalty”!

“They have polarized their party beyond recognition. There is a gale of suspension going on in their party as the National Chairman, State chairman and even the Governor, Deputy Governor and the Secretary to the State Government have all been suspended by the rival factions in their party. Their party is therefore now immersed in court cases across the federation.

“Your Excellency, this background was necessary so that you understand the pains we are going through in Edo when we hear leaders, members of the board of trustees and even some Governors’ uncharitable endorsement of APC’s embattled Governor Godwin Obaseki. The most recent of this is Governor David Umahi’s open endorsement of Godwin Obaseki for re-election.

“This practice, you will agree with us, is condemnable and smacks of indiscipline and ingratitude. It defeats the spirit of camaraderie that is supposed to exist within a political party. It is a morale-damper and it’s unacceptable.

“Your excellency, please use your office to call these leaders to order so that this open treachery doesn’t become a norm in our great party.”
