EPL players are being treated like lab rats – Danny Rose

Newcastle United defender Danny Rose says English Premier League (EPL) players are being treated like “lab rats”, after teams were given permission to return to training in small groups this week.

The England international, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, has been a vocal critic of the league’s plans to restart the season.

The 2019/2020 season has been suspended since mid-March due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The league said on Tuesday that six people from three different clubs had tested positive for COVID-19 out of a sample of 748 individuals.

“People are suggesting we should go back to football, like we’re guinea pigs or lab rats. We’re going to experiment this phase and see if it works or not,” Rose said.

“I can just imagine people at home saying, `Well, they earn that amount of money so they should be going back.’

“For stuff like that, I think, is it worth the hassle? I could be potentially risking my health for people’s entertainment and that’s not something I want to be involved in if I’m honest.”

Watford have confirmed that three people from the club, including one player, have tested positive for COVID-19.

Burnley said their assistant coach Ian Woan was among those to return a positive result after being tested on Sunday.

Watford skipper Troy Deeney has said he would not resume training out of concern for his son’s health.

No problem giving up wages but … – Danny Rose

Newcastle defender Danny Rose has come out to support Premier League players accepting pay cut but insists their ‘backs are against the wall’.

TheNewsGuru reports that top-flight clubs have agreed to propose a 30% cut to ease the financial burden of the coronavirus global crisis.

There had been criticism for the slow response from football, while some clubs – including Newcastle – have placed staff on temporary leave.

“We’re all keen to make something happen,” Rose, who is on loan at Newcastle from Tottenham, told BBC.

“I can only speak for myself but I would have no problems whatsoever contributing any of my wages to people who are fighting this on the front line and to people who have been affected by what’s happening at the minute.”

The Premier League has agreed to use the wage cuts to advance £125m to the EFL and National League, and give £20m towards the NHS.

“We sort of feel that our backs are against the wall. Conversations were being had before people outside of football were commenting,” Rose added to the Friday Football Social.

‘Mourinho didn’t give me chance as others’

Newcastle loan signing Danny Rose says he was not given the same opportunities as his fellow defenders to prove himself to Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

The 29-year-old made 16 appearances for Spurs early in the season but only five after Mourinho became manager on 20 November.

“I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline,” the left-back told BBC.

“I did want to play for him.”

The Doncaster-born player added: “I knew after a month [of Mourinho joining] I was never going to play. It was difficult going out to train knowing I wasn’t going to play.

“It’s not worked out, but full respect to him and what he’s doing at the club. He took over with the club 12 points adrift of Chelsea [now in fourth place] and now it’s four.

“I have to be honest, I thought I would continue playing.”

Racism: Tottenham defender Rose ‘can’t wait’ to quit football

Tottenham defender Danny Rose says he “can’t wait to see the back of football” and is frustrated at the lack of action taken against fans’ racism.

Racist chanting was directed at several England players, including Rose, during the Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro.

Uefa has charged Montenegro with racist behaviour but Rose, 28, does not expect a significant punishment.

The left-back said: “When countries get fined what I probably spend on a night out in London what do you expect?”

Rose, who was also abused while on England Under-21 duty in Serbia in 2012, says he will play on but has “had enough” of racism in the game.

“How I programme myself is that I think I’ve got five or six more years left in football, and I just can’t wait to see the back of it,” he added.

“Seeing how things are done in the game at the minute, you just have to get on with it.

“There is so much politics in football. I can’t wait to see the back of it.”

The Montenegro disciplinary case will be dealt with by European football’s governing body on 16 May.

The minimum punishment is a partial stadium closure, while a second offence results in one match being played behind closed doors and a fine of 50,000 euros (£42,500).

Montenegro coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic said he did not “hear or notice any” racist abuse, but England manager Gareth Southgate said “there’s no doubt in my mind it happened – it’s unacceptable”.

Rose said he had been ready for more chanting in Podgorica last week but does not expect the situation to change any time soon.
