  • DSS not military negotiated release of Dapchi schoolgirls – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has said the military were not involved in the negotiations leading to the release of 104 out of the 110 girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Dapchi, Yobe state.

The Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen John Agim said in a text message that the Department of State Services, (DSS) , led the negotiations for the release of the girls.

Following series of enquiries from the Defence Headquarters on the role of the Military regarding the release of the girls in the early hours of Wednesday, Brig. Gen Agim responded via a text message saying “the girls were released through negotiations led by the Department of State Services (DSS)”

Recall that the girls were abducted in their hostels at Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State by the Boko Haram insurgents on Monday 19, February 2018. They were however released on Wednesday (yesterday) following mass appeals and negotiations nationally and internationally.

  • Dapchi: Boko Haram preached, warned us not to return our girls to western schools – Parents

Parents of abducted Dapchi schoolgirls who were released on Wednesday by Boko Haram insurgents said upon returning the girls, the insurgents preached to them and warned against returning their children to western schools.

The parents also confirmed that no soldier or security operative was present in the community to confront the insurgents for the almost one hour they spent in the community.

Dapchi village burst into joyous mood as residents chorused Baba Oyoyo, Baba Oyoyo, in apparent appreciation of President Muhammadu Buhari, whom they felt engineered the negotiation of the girls as he promised them when he visited last week.

It was a thing of joy for us in Dapchi when suddenly we began to see trucks moving into the town at about 8:00 a.m in the morning”, said Ibrahim Husseini, a resident of Dapchi.

They brought the girls and then they were telling the general public that they should not go back to Western education schools; that what they did was not terrorism but rather the propagation of Islamic knowledge,” said Mr. Husseini who said his sister was among the released girls.

Kachalla Bukar, who is the secretary of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls’ parents’ group, said he received a phone call from relatives in Gumsa town that they saw Boko Haram gunmen coming towards Dapchi with the girls.

He said when he broke the news to the villagers, the people became scared and began to flee in fear.

Mr. Kachalla said he and other parents of the missing girls stood and watched as Boko Haram drove into the village in the same kind of vehicles that they used to take the girls away about 30 days ago.

He said he did not only wait to receive the girls, but also exchanged pleasantries with them and even took a selfie using the insurgents’ camera phones.

But we, the parents of the missing girls, did not run as other villagers did, because we cannot run and leave our girls in the hands of the Boko Haram.

When they came, they told us that they were returning the girls not because somebody gave them money, but out of their freewill. We thanked them. Then they told us that we must never return our girls to western school again; we said we will do as said. They preached to us for some time, and we said we will heed to their sermons.

They shook our hands and asked us to forgive them for whatever pains that they might have caused us; then we shook hands and they asked us to snap photos with them using their mobile phone which we all did.”

Sources in Dapchi said the Boko Haram gunmen began to leave the town at about 9:00 a.m., but stopped midway out of the town to fix their deflated tires.

Haruna Driver, a resident of Dapchi and father to one of the abducted girsl, Amina Haruna, said he could not believe that his daughter could return to him so early.

When the news came to me, it was like a dream. But when I saw my daughter, I and her mother shed tears of joy,” he said.

Sadly, we could not spend much time with her before she was taken to the hospital and then to Abuja. We thank God for His kindness and mercy on us. We thank the president and all those that worked hard to see that our daughters return to us safely.”

  • UPDATED: FG confirms release of 101 Dapchi schoolgirls

The Federal Government says the number of Dapchi schoolgirls released on Wednesday has increased from 76 to 101, following the documentation of more of the freed girls by security agencies.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who gave the update in a statement issued in Abuja, said that the number could still increase as the documentation of the freed girls was ongoing.

Mohammed had in an earlier statement confirmed the release of 76 of the 110 abducted students of Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe on Feb. 19.

The minister said that the release of the schoolgirls was the outcome of the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to all security agencies to do everything possible to secure the release of the schoolgirls

He said the girls were released around 3 a.m. through back-channel efforts and with the help of some friends of the country, and that it was unconditional.

”For the release to work, the government had a clear understanding that violence and confrontation would not be the way out as it could endanger the lives of the girls, hence a non-violent approach was the preferred option.

”Within the period when the girls were being brought back, operational pause was observed in certain areas to ensure free passage and also that lives were not lost,” he said.

The minister accompanied by minister of Interior, Abdurahman Dambazzau and minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hajia Khadija Bukar-Ibrahim were on their way to Maiduguri to meet with the freed girls.

  • Mama Boko Haram rejoices over release of Dapchi school girls

A human right activist, Mrs Aisha Wakil, on Wednesday expressed joy over the release of the Dapchi school girls from Boko Haram captivity.

The Federal Government today confirmed the release of the girls, who were abducted by the insurgents at Government Science and Technical School, Dapchi on February 19.

The insurgents transported the girls back to Dapchi in the early hours of today.

Wakil, popularly called “Mama Boko Haram”, who appeared highly elated, told NAN that she received the news of the release of the girls with “great joy.”

She commanded the Federal Government and other parties who contributed to the development, and expressed the hope that the remaining girls including Chibok girls would also be released soon.

“I am highly elated over the release of the girls, it is a welcome development,” she said.

Wakil had earlier indicated interest to work towards the release of the abducted girls.

Also, Malam Bashir Manzo, the Chairman, Parents Association of the Dapchi Abducted Girls, said that they were happy over the development.

Manzo disclosed that they were currently taking head count of the girls, adding most of them had returned to their homes.

Similarly, Mr Maina Musa and Ayuba Alamson, parents of abducted Chibok school girls, expressed joy over the development.

They, however, tasked the government to secure the release of the remaining school girls in insurgents’ captivity.

“It is disheartening on our part to see that our remaining children are still languishing in the hands of Boko Haram insurgents in the past four years,” Alamson said.

Alamson noted that over 100 Chibok girls were in Boko Haram captivity since 2014.

He called on the international community to support the Federal Government secure release of the girls and others still in captivity.

Representatives of the Chibok Parents Association had this morning paid a solidarity visit to Dapchi, to rejoice with the affected families.

  • Buhari dispatches Lai Mohammed, 3 other ministers to Dapchi

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday ordered four ministers to proceed to Dapchi in Yobe for update on the release of the female students abducted in February.

The Ministers include Mansur Dan-Ali, Defence; Abdulrahman Danbazau, Interior; Lai Mohammed, Information; and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Khadijat Abba-Ibrahim.

The four ministers left the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for the trip to Dapchi.

Before their departure, the Information Minister confirmed that 76 of the released girls had been documented.

According to him, when the girls were dropped in their school by the abductors many of them went straight home to reunite with their parents.

“I can confirm that the Dapchi girls have been returned, what we can confirm to you is that Mr President did actually assure Nigerians that the abducted girls would be released, but he also said that violence and confrontation would be ruled out.

“Based on that, the Federal Government with support of friendly countries embarked on back term negotiations; this back term negotiation has led to the release of these girls.

“What I can confirm today is that these girls were released yesterday, but on the conditions, number one is that they were released unconditionally; no money changed hands.

“Number two, they had one condition to return them to where they picked them.

“So in the early hours of today they did return the girls but of cause most of the girls went to their parents homes,’’ Mohammed stated.

According to him, efforts are now being made to document all the girls, adding that at the moment, 76 of them have been documented while “they are still more.’’

He promised to give update on the incident from time to time.

“It is a day of joy for Nigerians. What I can assure you is that Mr president has kept his promise.

“The girls have been released and we will tell you exactly in a few hours time how many of them have been documented.

“They were not molested,’’ he added.

Also, Defence Minister, Mansur Dan-Ali attributed the early release of the girls to “the effort of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces for the support he has been giving us and the output is showing now.”

On the negotiations, the minister said that while it was being planned the government was prepared to move on a position of strength.

Also Minister of state for foreign Affairs, Khadijat Abba-Ibrahim said: “I am very excited today. That is what I feel because the Dapchi girls have been released.

“We are very happy. We have achieved what we have gone out to achieve and we thank the Almighty God for his mercies.”

She declined to mention if any of the girls was killed.

“As far as I know now, they are taking a roll call so we cannot ascertain how many have passed on, but we will find out later on what the casualties are.’’

The minister advised parents not to be discouraged by the incident but to continue encouraging their female children to embrace education.

“I will advise parents to continue sending their children to school.

“We as a government will fortify the schools to make sure that they are safe for the children to actually go and learn,’’ Mrs Abba-Ibrahim said.

  • Presidency, parents confirm release of Dapchi schoolgirls

The Presidency on Wednesday confirmed the release of students of Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State who were abducted by the Boko Haram sect on February 19.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed the report.

Shehu promised to give further details on the development later.

“Yes, the girls are being transported to safety. We will give details later. We thank God,” the presidential spokesman said.

Similarly, Buhari’s aide, Bashir Ahmad tweeted:”During Pres. Buhari’s visit to Dapchi last week, he assured the parents of #DapchiGirls that the FG will not rest until all the Chibok and Dapchi schoolgirls in the Boko Haram custody are released and reunited with their families.

Today, we are celebrating #DapchiGirls’ return.”

The girls’ release came exactly one week after President Muhammadu Buhari visited the school where they were kidnapped.

Also confirming the reports on the release of abducted Dapchi schoolgirls, Chairman of Dapchi schoolgirls parents association, Bashir Manzo, said an headcount is imperative to ascertain the numbers of girls released.

Buhari had during the visit last Wednesday reassured parents of the abducted schoolgirls that the Federal Government will not rest on its oars, until their wards are safely brought back home.

The President, who was accompanied by Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State, said he had directed full scale aerial surveillance and investigation to ensure that the girls were returned safely.

“I have read the full report of what happened in Dapchi. As I received the report, I was saddened and I am praying that God will continue to console you,” he said.

Buhari also said government will ensure that the Boko Haram menace is totally brought to an end.

“Boko Haram was in control of many local councils in Borno and some parts of Yobe State before we came. Now it has resorted to using young girls fo suicide missions in mosques, churches and motor parks.

“We will not spare their members. We will ensure that Boko Haram meets its waterloo. By the will of God, I have directed the police and reinforced them, and the army and air force to keep searching until the children are returned alive,” he said.

  • We’ll do headcount to ascertain numbers of abducted Dapchi girls released – Parent Association

Confirming the reports on the release of abducted Dapchi schoolgirls, Chairman of Dapchi schoolgirls parents association, Bashir Manzo, said an headcount is imperative to ascertain the numbers of girls released.

According to reports, the girls were said to be brought and dumped in the village by unknown persons believed to be Boko Haram.

The chairman of the Dapchi schoolgirls parents association, Bashir Manzo, confirmed that the girls were brought to Dapchi.

“My relatives and colleagues in Dapchi just informed me that the girls were brought this morning,” he said.

“I am heading to Dapchi now from Damaturu. When I get there we will do a head count to see if all of them have been released.”

It is not yet clear if all the 110 kidnapped girls were freed.

Recall that the federal government recently assured that the Dapchi schoolgirls will soon regain freedom.

According to the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, gave the assurance during an interview session on Dateline Abuja, a Channels Television’s programme.

He said: “It can be earlier; maybe a week, it can be two weeks, but we are on it, and I’m telling you with all sense of sincerity that we are closing in on them”.

“We have dispatched all the surveillance devices we have in terms of air, human resource, intelligence, and other forces that needed to be in place by all possible means and we have made sure that all that’s needed is being done to see that these girls are being found, wherever they are.”

Dan-Ali was also confident that the girls would return in the shortest time owing to the intelligence at the government’s disposal, though he could not say the exact time when this would be.

  • UPDATED: Five dead as Boko Haram returns abducted 105 Dapchi schoolgirls

Over 105 girls who were kidnapped from Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, located in Bulabulin, Yunusari Local Government area of Yobe State, have reportedly returned.

“Nigerian Islamist militant group, Boko Haram today returned 105 girls kidnapped from a high school compound in Dapchi a few weeks ago….the militant group came with the girls in 9 vehicles same way they took them away.

“There was confusion in the area as members of the community scampered into the bush as the terror group appeared in the area, first dropping off one the girls in a nearby village and then driving into the center of Dapchi town to drop off the rest of the girls.
“Five of the girls are dead according to our source. It is not clear if the Nigerian government paid any ransom to get the girls released.” Sahara Reporters reports.

Recall that the federal government recently assured that the Dapchi schoolgirls will soon regain freedom.

According to the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, gave the assurance during an interview session on Dateline Abuja, a Channels Television’s programme.

  • Dapchi girls: Jonathan didn’t attend society wedding like you did, ex-presidential aide blasts Buhari

…Says Buhari didn’t handle Dapchi abduction better than Jonathan did Chibok

A former aide of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s claims in Damaturu, Yobe, that he handled the recent abduction of 110 Dapchi schoolgirls ‘much better’ than Mr. Jonathan treated a similar incident in Chibok in 2014 is false.

Reno Omokri in a statement on Thursday rather defended his former boss saying it was Jonathan who treated the abduction with dispatch while Mr. Buhari chose to “look the other way”.

Recall President Buhari, while speaking in Damaturu where he went to sympathise with the parents of the Dapchi schoolgirls had used the occasion to take a swipe at his predecessor, who had also been criticised in the past for the abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls, although many have been reunited with their families.

Mr. Buhari in Damaturu had said: “The Federal Government’s response to the unfortunate abduction of the school girls is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way while the Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over three years.

“Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills.”

However, Mr. Omokri said it beats his “imagination why a President who is close to 80 years of age will continue to lie like a child”.

    Read Omokri’s statement below:

“When the Chibok Girls were kidnapped, the Jonathan administration did not “look the other way” as President Buhari claims and historical records prove this. The Chibok Girls were kidnapped on April 14, 2014. Exactly three days later, on April 17, 2014, then President Goodluck Jonathan called an emergency National Security Council meeting at Aso Rock Presidential Villa. Is this the act of an administration or a President that looks away?

“Now more than two weeks after the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped, has President Buhari held a National Security Council meeting to address the situation? No, he has not. As a matter of fact, to prove to Nigerians how inept he is, the President canceled the Federal Executive Council meeting that was to hold after the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped because of a conference he had to attend.

“Between a President who calls an emergency meeting after Chibok and a President who canceled an important meeting so he could attend an economic conference, who can be described as looking the other way?

“Which serious leader cancels the most important meeting in his nation at a time when Kaduna is facing ethnic and religious killings, Zamfara is facing mass killings by bandits, Benue, Plateau, Adamawa and Taraba are facing an onslaught from Fulani herdsmen and 110 girls were kidnapped in Dapchi?

“When Yusuf Buhari had an accident, President Buhari canceled all his engagements and headed straight to the hospital. When the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped, the same President Buhari carried on as usual and went to Kano to go and dance and socialise at a Society Wedding!

“After the Jonathan administration held an emergency National Security Council meeting on April 17, 2014, the Nigerian Army and Air force began searching for the Chibok girls with sorties being flown in search of the girls.

“Let me remind Nigerians that one of the people who undermined the then administration’s anti-terror war was Muhammadu Buhari who on June 3, 2013 said the “military offensive against Boko Haram is anti-North”. I urge Nigerians to Google this direct quote to know their President better.

“And again, the President lied when he said his administration “rescued” 100 Chibok Girls. The Chibok Girls were not rescued. As a matter of fact, they were released by Boko Haram after the alleged payment of huge ransoms and freedom of captured Boko Haram commanders by the Buhari administration.

“Only two weeks ago, Shuaibu Moni, one of the Boko Haram commanders released by the Buhari administration went back to Sambisa Forest and released a video threatening Nigeria.

“Who knows whether it was moneys allegedly paid as ransom to Boko Haram or individuals freed by the government that were used to facilitate the kidnap of the Dapchi Girls and the recent killings of United Nations staff in Rann.

“Again, three weeks ago, Chief Mike Okiro, the head of the Police Service Commission, revealed that under President Muhammadu Buhari, 150,000 police men are guarding ‘big men’ instead of performing core police duties.

“President Buhari’s son, Yusuf, alone had more guards guarding him than the guards attached to Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi at the time of the kidnapping, yet the President has the guts to say he handled Daochi better than Jonathan handled Chibok. A serious President, knowing how vulnerable the Northeast is would have sent these 150,000 policemen to guard schools in the Northeast rather than send them out to guard APC big shots all over the country.

“Finally, can President Buhari, who claims to have defeated Boko Haram, tell the world how many people are killed Daily by Boko Haram under his regime as compared to the previous regime?

“In the first ten weeks of 2018, Boko Haram killed 519 people in the Northeast. Only a patently dishonest leader can claim to have defeated Boko Haram with such numbers.”

Buhari’s tour is already receiving more knocks than commendations.

In Makurdi, the president was derided by many when he said he was unaware, three months after, that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, failed to obey his directive to relocate to Benue to contain the perennial conflicts between herdsmen and farmers.

While many have called for the sack of Mr. Idris, the controversial cop was reportedly summoned by the president to give an update in the raging crisis in Benue state while presidential sources say the president would act on the matter “when he has all the details”.

  • Dapchi abduction: Parents welcome negotiation option to rescue school girls

Parents of abducted Dapchi schoolgirls in Yobe, on Tuesday, lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for considering the option of negotiation against use of military force to rescue the girls.

The parents, who spoke separately to News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu, said the option gave them hope for safe return of the girls.

Alhaji Bashir Manzo, chairman, parents association of the abducted schoolgirls, said “this is a welcome development and we are happy about it.

“Use of force, as the only option, will result in death of many of the girls while negotiation provides for their safe return.”

The chairman, who encouraged government to go for dialogue to hasten return of the girls, said “the fact that the insurgents provide room for negotiation gives us hope for safe return of our daughters.”

Alhaji Baba Shehu, Secretary Dapchi Youth Development Association, also described the negotiation option as a healthy development.

“Government should deploy resources at its disposal to take this advantage and ensure safe return of the girls” he said.

Alhaji Ali Mohammed, a father of eight of the students, described negotiation as the only safe option for the insurgents to release the girls, saying he was happy “government has considered this option of negotiation”.

Maryam Alkali, a mother, said every mother would appreciate the option that will bring the girls back home safely.

“Let me state without fear of contradiction that every mother of the abducted girls will now have a strong hope for reunion with these girls” she said.

Malam Mustapha Imam, another parent, said “If government had resorted to military option alone, it may jeopardize the safety of the girls, so the option of negotiation is a welcome development.”

He however called on government to take strong precautionary measures in safeguarding every school in the country, especially those in the Northeast.

“Government has to invest heavily on security, especially in equipment, manpower and intelligence gathering for improved security,” Imam said.

President on Monday, while receiving US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, said the federal government had considered the option of negotiation to rescue the abducted students.
