Sign their death warrant – Nigerians charge Gov Abiodun after court sentences killers of Ogun couple

Nigerians on social media have urged the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to sign the death warrant of Lekan Adekanbi, Ahmed Odetola, and Waheed Adeniyi who were sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Kehinde Fatinoye, his wife, Bukola Fatinoye, and their son, Oreoluwa on January 1, 2023.

TheNewsGuru recalls that the Fatinoye family was attacked in their Ibara GRA residence shortly after returning from a New Year crossover service. Led by their driver, Lekan Adekanbi, the assailants broke into the house around 2 a.m., killed the couple, and set both their bodies and the house on fire.

The attackers also tied up their son, Oreoluwa, along with an adopted son, before throwing them into the Ogun River. While Oreoluwa tragically drowned, the adopted son miraculously survived.

Following of the suspects’ arrest and arraingment, the Ogun State High Court sitting in Kobape, Abeokuta, on Monday, sentenced the trio to death for their crime.

Following the verdict, Nigerians called Abiodun to ensure a swift justice for the victims. Many citizens argue that condemned criminals often remain on death row for years, sustained by taxpayers’ money while justice remains incomplete.

    Public Outcry For Immediate Execution

A Facebook user, Otunba Smart Adeleke Al-Makura, voiced his frustration, writing:

“All executive governors should sign the papers of those on death row rather than keeping them in correctional centers, wasting taxpayers’ money to feed them. Governor Dapo Abiodun should sign this sharp-sharp to decongest the correctional facilities. These criminals don’t deserve to be alive.”

Another user, Taiwo Samson Enitan, praised the judiciary but stressed the need for swift implementation:

“Thanks to the judiciary system. To reduce criminal activities in our society, the death warrant of these murderers should be signed immediately. This will not only lower crime rates but also instill fear in those who have similar criminal intentions.”

Similarly, Ya’u Ibrahim argued that the failure to enforce capital punishment contributes to rising crime rates:

“Governors don’t sign death warrants. If people were hanged or shot after being sentenced, the desperate pursuit of wealth through crime would drastically reduce.”

Emphasizing the need for urgency, Com. Olusegun Makavelli Shakur stated:

“I hope the governor quickly signs this to serve as a deterrent. We cannot afford to pamper such heinous crimes.”

Samson Taiwo echoed this sentiment, urging:

“The governor should sign their death warrant immediately. They don’t deserve to live.”

Another user, Titilayo O. Jagun, directly called on the governor:

“Gov. Dapo Abiodun, please sign their death warrant as soon as it gets to you.”

Olusegun Fatoyinbo, who claimed to have followed the case from the beginning, described the murder as barbaric and criticized the lack of enforcement of death sentences:

“That’s a very good judgment. I followed the case from the start. The way these criminals killed the couple and their son was barbaric. I don’t understand why all Nigerian governors refuse to sign death warrants. The constitution should be amended to empower state chief judges to authorize executions.”

  • Tinubu’s tax reform misunderstood – Gov Abiodun

Tinubu’s tax reform misunderstood – Gov Abiodun

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has said most of the disquiet over the Federal Government-led proposed tax reform in the country is borne out of misunderstanding.

Abiodun said this on Thursday at the ongoing Africa Investment Forum, Market Days 2024, in Rabat, Morocco. The event, on its second day, is under the theme: ‘Leveraging Innovative Partnerships for Scale’.

The organisers said that the theme underscored the commitment by partners to drive transformative investments across Africa through strategic collaborations.

Abiodun spoke after a closed-door meeting with the African Developmental Bank Group president, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina.

The governor said, from the perspective of the Ogun government, the resistance to the proposed tax reform was a product of gross misinformation and misinterpretation.

According to him, when people are better informed, they will have a much more positive appreciation of what the tax reform represents.

“The fact is that, from what we’ve done, subject to a few suggestions that we heard, and what we’ve seen, the proposed tax reform will improve the lots of the states of the federation much better than the status quo.

“The misconception is that some of our people did not take time to interrogate and understand the reform. There was also a lot of suspicion around the intention.

“But we, in Ogun State, and I, as a responsible member of the Governors’ Forum as well as a patriotic Nigerian at that, I am convinced that the purpose of the reform is in the best interest of every subnational government in Nigeria. This I say without a shadow of a doubt,” the governor said.

Abiodun explained that, at the Governors’ Forum level, there was painstaking engagement going on and soon the cloud would be clearer as everyone would embrace the reality.

“We are speaking. I believe that as the days go by, people are becoming more appreciative of the true reflection of what the reform represents.

“I’m sure that by next week or so, you will more than likely see a better understanding from all stakeholders – that it is not what they thought it was. There are more benefits,” he added.

The governor noted that the tax reform is more of benefit than the prevailing situation as it is meant to be consumption-oriented.

He noted that the heart of the proposed tax reform was the Value Added Tax (VAT), meant to be a consumption tax.

His words: “The current situation put us at a great disadvantage in Ogun because we’re the industrial capital of Nigeria, number one in non-oil revenue in Nigeria, and we have an abundance of almost every natural resource.

“So, you find out that a lot of production that goes in Ogun State, but the companies themselves have their head offices are somewhere else, like Lagos, the VAT accrues to Lagos.

“But with this reform and the new generation, that should improve. We feel that if you suggest better as to where values added the most.

“For example, if a bag of cement is produced in Ogun State and the bag of cement is sold elsewhere, the question is, where is the most value added? Is it at the point of sale, or is it where it’s actually mined, packed, bagged and transported?”

He said those were the kind of fine-tuning that the tax freeform required so that at the end of the day the benefits would be truly all-encompassing.
