Mikel Arteta speaks out on Luiz, Ceballos fight

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has played down reports of a fight between Arsenal team-mates Dani Ceballos and David Luiz in training – saying incidents happen all the time behind closed doors.

The Athletic revealed on Thursday that Ceballos and Luiz had clashed after the latter had taken exception to a challenge by the Spaniard during a training ground match at London Colney.

It was reported that Luiz hit his colleague in the face, leaving the midfielder with a scratch on his nose, although Ceballos, who is on loan from Real Madrid for the season, labelled the story as ‘fake’ on social media.

However, Arteta reveals that there is now ‘no problem at all’ between the pair, who could both feature when the Gunners take on Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday.

“I have got a really bad vision from far,” Arteta said with a smile. “That is why we train behind closed doors.

“Training is very competitive and issues happen a lot of times. Those things get resolved immediately within the team and there is not much to say.”

David Luiz gives condition to cut his hair

Arsenal defender, David Luiz, has said he will only cut his hair if he becomes a manager.

At 33 years, Luiz is already looking forward to life after playing.

The Brazil international has committed to another year with the Gunners, despite a shaky stint since his arrival from Chelsea.

Luiz has also expressed a desire to go for a second spell at Portuguese giants Benfica before heading into retirement.

When asked by Esquire what he would do if he went into management, he said: “I’d put a suit on and cut my hair.

“I can’t be a coach with this hair, nobody’s going to respect me!”

EPL: You can bully David Luiz – Van Persie

Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie says he would ‘bully’ David Luiz if they came up against each other.

The Brazilian defender, 33, has been put under the microscope after a shocking performance against Manchester City two weeks ago, which ended in a sending off.

“With David Luiz, if he was 24 or 25 you would say he is potentially world-class,” Van Persie told BT Sport. “But he is not. He is 33.

“He has all the skills too because he is confident on the ball, he can pass, he can dribble. He can defend but he just makes too many silly mistakes which makes it easy for an opponent.

“If you play against him, I would go at him, almost try to bully him and to make physical contact with him and move around him and try to tease him a little bit because he is vulnerable.

“The first job you have to do is to defend, be solid and be trustworthy. If you have extra, you can dribble, do some nice passes perfect but he needs to focus on his job.”

EPL: Luiz signs new contract with Arsenal

David Luiz has signed a new contract with Arsenal.

Luiz made a nightmare return against Manchester City last week, making the error for the Sky Blues’ first before fouling Riyad Mahrez inside the box and being sent off, before they scored the resulting penalty, ultimately costing Arsenal the game.

The Brazil international joined the Gunners last summer from Chelsea for £8m, and has admittedly not enjoyed his best season in the Premier League.

But the 33-year-old will still be part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for some time after his contract was surprisingly extended, says the Daily Star.

An announcement could confirm the deal later today.

EPL: Luiz seeking two-year contract for Arsenal stay

Arsenal defender David Luiz is seeking a new two-year contract at Emirates.

The club can propose a temporary extension until the end of the season or activate an automatic 12-month renewal clause inserted into the player’s contract.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Arsenal do not want to pay Luiz his £120,000-a-week wages for another season.

The coronavirus pandemic is biting the club’s finances hard, prompting a ten per cent pay cut agreed by the vast majority of the squad during football’s shutdown.

A new contract on reduced terms may be on the table yet Mikel Arteta’s side still favour a single year for the 33-year-old.

  • Why working with Arteta special for me – Luiz

Why working with Arteta special for me – Luiz

Arsenal defender David Luiz says he has come as close as he will get to fulfilling his dream of working with Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola’s long-time assistant Mikel Arteta took over the Gunners helm halfway through this season, and Luiz has relished learning from the former Manchester City assistant.

“I am grateful because I made another dream come true. Not in a concrete way, but in a different way. I always had the dream of working with [Pep] Guardiola,” Luiz told ESPN Brasil.

“I couldn’t work with him, but I’m having the opportunity to work with a person who grew up and learned and was victorious with him, who has the same ideas. So, in a way, I’m making a dream come true.”

Chelsea staff begged me to return to Stamford Bridge – Luiz

David Luiz has claimed that Chelsea staff begged him to return to the club, just days after he moved to Arsenal.

Luiz ended his second spell at Stamford Bridge, when he signed for their London rivals in an £8million deal last summer.

The Brazilian has admitted he missed his former club at first, having won the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup while at Chelsea.

But Luiz, in an interview with OTRO, insisted he had no regrets over his move to the Emirates.

He said: “I had this connection with everyone at the club. It was so massive and big and I was missing every single one.

“Every text message I was receiving, people were saying: ‘Come back, come back, come back, come back, we are here for you.”

EPL: Why David Luiz left Chelsea for Arsenal – Lampard

Brazilian star David Luiz left Chelsea because of England defender Fikayo Tomori, according to the London side’s coach Frank Lampard.

Recall that Luiz joined Arsenal from Chelsea during the summer of 2019 for eight million pounds after claiming the Europa League with the Blues.

Tomori played under Lampard while he was on loan at the Championship side last season and has made a sparkling start to life under the new Chelsea boss.

While speaking ahead of Chelsea’s derby with Tottenham Hotspurs, Lampard praised Tomori, saying he has a great future with the London side.

“For me, Tomori is probably the proudest one because when he came to Derby last year it was quite a late move for us,” Lampard said.

“When I came back to Chelsea you look at it and you’ve got four centre backs, so unless I trusted Fikayo there’s no way David Luiz could have moved to Arsenal.”

David Luiz speaks on quitting Arsenal

Arsenal defender, David Luiz, has said he is not looking to leave the Emirates soon, amid speculation he could return to his native Brazil.

The 32-year-old is only a matter of months into a two-year contract with the Gunners, after arriving from Chelsea in the summer.

Luiz said he will give his all to Arsenal until at least 2021.

Luiz told ESPN Brasil: “I, today, have no such plan. I don’t have that as a goal. But we never know, football goes very fast.

“What makes me happy is to see the quality of Brazilian football. You see Jorge Jesus with Flamengo, and the great players like Felipe, Rafinha, Gerson, Gagibol, who’s back shining as he did at first at Santos.

“So without a doubt, I’m happy for our football. I am glad about the ever-growing quality.

“I’m sincere to say that today I don’t have this idea. I have a two-year contract with Arsenal. I have ambitions and goals here with Arsenal, so I came here. But we never know in the future.”

  • Frank Lampard must deliver at Chelsea – Luiz

David Luiz has described Frank Lampard as a Chelsea legend but acknowledged he must deliver in his new role as head coach.
Lampard is the club’s all-time goalscorer with 211 goals and won 11 trophies during his illustrious playing career at Stamford Bridge.
But Luiz says he must now lead Chelsea to glory off the pitch having done so on it.

“If you keep winning titles, this is good. In the last years, we’ve changed coach but still won things,” said Luiz.
“Now, we have a different coach with a new philosophy. But in the end it is the same thing: you play for a big club and a big club has to win.
“Everyone knows Lamps is a legend. It was a pleasure to work with him as a player and it’s a pleasure to work with him as a coach now.
“When you play with a player like Lamps, he is a leader anyway so he is still leading the team now in a different place.
“He cannot run anymore and cannot score goals any more but he’s still a leader.

Olivier Giroud scored twice as Chelsea beat St Patrick’s 4-0 to seal Frank Lampard’s first win in charge of the club.

“The squad is good enough, with the experienced players, the talented players, the young players.
“We just lost a big, big name, a legend of the club, in Eden Hazard but we have many players who can do the job.”
