Europa Conference League: Bowen’s dying minute goal wins title for West Ham

West Ham United finally broke a 58 year old jinx by winning a continental competition in Europe.

The Hammers  won their first major European trophy since 1965 by beating Fiorentina 2-1 in the Europa Conference League final.

Winger Jarrod Bowen scored a late winner inn the dying minute of the game for David Moyes’ side in Prague.

Bowen raced onto Lucas Paqueta’s defence-splitting through-ball to bear down on goal and rifle past Pietro Terracciano.

West Ham had opened the scoring just after the hour through Said Benrahma’s penalty from Cristiano Biraghi’s handball.

However, Fiorentina equalised a few minutes later as Giacomo Bonaventura found the far corner with a well-taken finish.

The Hammers withstood heavy pressure at times, but held firm before scoring a late winner that sealed a long-awaited triumph.

West Ham now have their first major trophy in 43 years. It’s also their second European trophy after the 1965 Cup Winners’ Cup.

West Ham will join Liverpool, Brighton to feature in next year’s Europa League competition by virtue of winning the Europa Conference League.

West Ham vs Gent: Moyes warns players to be wary of Nigerian forward, Gift Orban

West Ham United manager, David Moyes has told his players to keep an eye on Red Hot Nigerian forward Gift Orban ahead of their UEFA Europa Conference League encounter.

Gent will host the Hammers in the quarter-final first leg encounter at the Ghelamco Arena on Thursday (today) night.

Orban, who linked up with Gent from Norwegian second division club, Staebek in January has been in sensational form in the competition.

The 20-year-old scored the quickest hat-trick in UEFA club competition in Gent’s 4-1 rout of Turkish club, Istanbul Basaksehir in the previous round last month.

Moyes reckoned it is important for his side to keep the young striker quiet.

“Ghent did very well in Istanbul. They are going very strong. Gift Orban scored a hat-trick in Istanbul,” Moyes told a press conference.

“He is a very dangerous player but we saw them work enough and realize that their core has several strong players.”

David Moyes demands Antonio break 35-year record

West Ham boss David Moyes wants 20 goals from Michail Antonio this season.

Tony Cottee was the last Hammers player to reach the milestone – scoring 22 times in the old Division One in 1986-87 – while Paolo Di Canio’s 16 strikes in the 1999-00 campaign is the club’s highest individual haul of the Premier League era.

“It’s really important that we do get a striker who contributes those figures if we can because your goals will definitely get us up nearer the top,” said Moyes. “Mic’s winning goal in the 90th minute the other day was magic for us and you need a centre-forward (capable of that).

“You see (Cristiano) Ronaldo do it for Manchester United and what it can do to your football club and to your team, how it lifts us, it gave us an incredible lift coming away from Leeds with three points.

“I think it’s a challenge for Mic to get 20 goals, I think he should be putting it down (as a target), it’s something that he should be attempting to get to.

“It’s certainly not beyond him. I think the challenge to Mic would be to sit down and say look, ‘can you get to that?’.

“He got 10 last year and I think the first challenge would be to say, “come on, you’ve got to get more than 10 right away”, that would be the first thing, not to look too far ahead, let’s try and get 10 as quickly as you can and then let’s see what you can do after that.”

David Moyes reveals Lingard chat after Man Utd game

West Ham boss David Moyes has revealed what he said to Jesse Lingard after Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United.

Lingard spent the second half of last season on loan at the London Stadium, scoring nine goals in 16 Premier League matches, helping fire the Irons to Europa League qualification.

The midfielder struck in the 89th minute on Sunday to give the Red Devils all three points from a thrilling encounter which saw David De Gea save a penalty from Mark Noble deep into stoppage-time.

After the final whistle had blown, Moyes spoke to Lingard after his ex-player broke West Ham’s defiant defence after his error for United against Young Boys on Tuesday.

“I was laughing but more importantly, I said how well he recovered from his mistake in midweek; he makes a mistake which probably cost Manchester United a first win in the Champions League,” he explained.

“But that’s what football does you always get a second chance in football to bounce back. Jesse got a second chance to bounce back as a player when he was at West Ham last year so we’ll always be grateful, for what he did for us,” the Scot stated.

“I wish he hadn’t scored but we had a chance to get a draw out of it and we missed our chance.”

  • We need to end these fight-backs – David Moyes

We need to end these fight-backs – David Moyes

West Ham United manager David Moyes admits he was putting on a ‘stick-on smile’ after the 3-2 win over Leicester City on Sunday.

The Hammers almost blew a 3-0 lead against Leicester, as they did against Arsenal recently.

And Moyes acknowledged he must fix the worrying pattern as West Ham look to secure fourth-place on the table.

“I’m not smiling,” Moyes said after the game. “This one is a stick-on smile today. This is a smile of anger because we nearly threw away another big three points for us and we don’t want to do that.

“We were 3-0 up against Arsenal and 3-0 up against Wolves and 3-0 up against Leicester and they’re incredible results, but they don’t sound that incredible when it goes 3-3, 3-2, 3-2.

“I’ve got to try and put an end to that. I can’t allow that to happen and we’ve got to be better.”

Moyes warns under-fire Man Utd manager, Solskjaer

West Ham manager David Moyes has warned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he will need to improve results soon if he is to remain at Old Trafford.

Scrutiny on Solskjaer has been building in the wake of back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Fomer United boss, Moyes was sacked eight months after replacing Alex Ferguson in 2013, with his final match a 2-0 defeat at Everton, the team Man Utd face next at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Moyes knows only too well that pressure on Solskjaer will continue to build if United do not start winning games.

“All managers are under pressure,” he said on Friday.

“At Manchester United there is more pressure than any club in the world. It comes with the job. We know what happens if you don’t win enough games.”

  • EPL: I do regret leaving Everton – Moyes

West Ham boss David Moyes has admitted regret quitting Everton for Manchester United in 2013.

After 11 years at Goodison Park, during which he earned much praise for his work at Everton, Moyes was appointed as United manager in 2013 as the successor to the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

Moyes’ spell at United certainly didn’t go to plan as he was sacked after less than a season.

He told Bein Sport: “I think I’ll always look back and regret leaving Everton because of the team and the players I had built at that time.

“But I’ll never be regretful for joining Manchester United or doing what I’ve done.

“I think in football we all make decisions – Andy will tell you as much as anything – some work for you, some don’t work for you.

“I think on the journey of being a football player or football manager you’re never always going to have good times. You’re always at times going to have ups and downs.”

“We are delighted to welcome David back – he knows the Club well and he built strong relationships during that time which will be crucial for the work that needs to be done going forward.”

“It’s fabulous to be back,” said Moyes. “It feels great to be home. I’ve missed being here because I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed being around the stadium and I loved being in this part of the world and I missed the Club, so I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m feeling very proud that I’m back here at West Ham. But I think more importantly I’ll be looking to see what I can do and what I can make improvements to, how we can get some wins with the players and how we can get some quick wins on the field as well.

“I do believe that the squad of players I’ve got here is a better squad of players than when I took over before, so I am looking forward to working with them.”

“I think there’s got to be a short-term goal for us just now to get the wins to get us away from the wrong end of the league and what we’re going to do over the next six months, then what we’re going to do over the next period as well. The start is really focusing on the immediate games.”

Andy Carroll resumes training after apologising to Moyes

Controversial West Ham striker, Andy Carroll returned to training on Wednesday after apologising to manager David Moyes, Sky Sports News understands.

Carroll was sent home from training on Monday having refused to apologise for leaving the bench and heading down the tunnel during West Ham’s 4-1 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.

The Englishman apologised to Moyes and is hoping to play a part as the Hammers head for a crucial match in their relegation fight at Leicester on Saturday.

Striker Carroll was clearly frustrated as he remained on the bench as an unused substitute before disappearing down the tunnel towards the end of the game.

In his post-match interview, Moyes promised to “deal with it”, and the pair were involved in a heated exchange before the Scot sent Carroll home on Monday.

After a 4-1 loss to the champions left the Hammers just three points outside the drop zone with three games left, Moyes told Sky Sports: “In this situation, what you need is everybody to be a team member.”

Carroll, 29, has made 16 appearances for West Ham this season, as he has continued to struggle with injury problems. He was also sent off against Burnley last October.
