JUST IN: Peter Obi reacts to allegation of treason

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has said he has never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state. He also stated that he has never sponsored or preached any action against the Nigerian state.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mr Obi’s reaction is coming after Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed accused him and his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed to have committed treason, following an alleged leaked conversation between him and the Bishop of Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo.

In a series of tweets, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the just concluded 2023 elections stressed that he is known for advocating for peace and issue-based campaign and that he has never campaigned based on ethnicity or religion.

Peter Obi wrote on Twitter: “In the past few days, I have observed various campaigns of calumny directed at my person, with the latest being allegations attributed to the information Minister, Lai Mohammed from Washington DC.

“It is most unfortunate that these consistent efforts to portray me quite contrary to what I am, and my core values, is coming from such high quarters. Minister Lai accusing me of stoking insurrection is totally malicious and fictitious.

“I have never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state; I have never sponsored or preached any action against the Nigerian state. Those initiating these actions have increasingly used their official positions and agents to make false allegations against me.

“I am on record as always, advocating for peace and issue-based campaign and never campaigned based on ethnicity or religion. I am committed to due process, and presently seeking redress in the Court.

“I urge those engaged in this demarketing process to stop presenting Nigeria in such bad light. Our future generations deserve a new Nigeria, where they can live a secure and decent life like their counterparts in other climes. It is possible.

Yes daddy audio leak: NCC denies telephone hacking, tracking allegations

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied allegations of telephone “tracking” and “leakage” made against it by some individuals and groups.

In a press statement on Tuesday by Reuben Muoka, Director, Public Affairs at the NCC, the Commission clarified that by the provisions of law, it is unable to “track” or “leak” telephone conversations of anyone in the country.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission denies these allegations and advises the public to disregard them,” the statement said.

The NCC also reiterated its commitment to discharging its responsibilities to the Nigerian people in accordance with extant laws and global best practices.

The Commission further disclosed that it has put relevant security agencies on notice concerning the allegations for proper investigation and necessary action.

Recall a telephone conversation allegedly between the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi and a Nigerian preacher and founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo was leaked over the weekend.

The alleged leaked conversation had sparked controversies, highlighting the political significance of religion in Nigeria.

In the audio released to the public by People’s Gazette, Obi referred to the elections as a “religious war” and seemingly solicited the help of Oyedepo in spreading his campaign message to Christians in the South-west and parts of North-central.

A Nigerian cyber security expert based in South Africa, Charles Awuzie alleged that the leaked audio tape between Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP and Bishop David Oyedepo could be traced to state-sponsored surveillance of the opposition.

The expert suggested that the persons who leaked the audio must have partnered with security agencies and staff of the telecommunication companies.

“First, the call wasn’t recorded by either of the parties because you can’t record a phone call from the same device while the call is still connecting.

“So, whoever leaked the audio probably used the security agencies and staff of the telecommunication companies. Already we know that MTN’s CEO is Pro-INEC and Pro-Agbado (referring to Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu). I warned about this too. If Peter Obi is still using that network, he should change ASAP.

“By establishing that the leak of opposition leaders’ calls are linked to the ruling party, the international community will mark such governments as suppressive and tyrant,” Awuzie said in a post via his verified Facebook page on Sunday.

Special Report: How alleged leaked phone call highlights political significance of religion in Nigeria

Religion has unwittingly been incorporated into Nigeria’s practice of democracy and has become one of the most important sources of polarization in the country’s politics.

Since the colonial era, Nigeria’s extremely volatile political structure has been defined by a Muslim-dominated north and a southern region where Christians are in the majority.

The latest trigger to the age-long tension between the Christians and Muslims in Nigeria has come from a leaked phone conversation allegedly between the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and a Nigerian preacher and founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo.

In the audio which was leaked to the public by People’s Gazette, Obi referred to the elections as a “religious war” and seemingly solicited the help of Oyedepo in spreading his campaign message to Christians in the South-west and parts of North-central.

Prior to the release of the audio recording, Obi had strived to maintain both religious and ethnic neutrality and recently challenged ex-Governor of Enugu state Chimaroke Nnamani, to provide proof of his allegations of ethnoreligious bigotry against him.

“I have been on record to have insisted severally throughout the country that I should not be voted for based on any ethnic or religious link,  but to be considered based on character, capacity, and compassion.

“I will also like to challenge anybody including, my dear elder brother (Nnamani) to show anywhere in my public appearance where I in any way portrayed ethnic, or religious bigotry,” Obi said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that during campaigns preceding the presidential election on February 25, the Labour Party flagbearer had warned against attempts by his traducers to ascribe religious or ethnic colouration to the ‘Obidient’ movement, saying that it would not see the light of the day.

While the leaked audio sparked controversy on microblogging sites such as Twitter and Facebook, LP’s Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, said the context of the conversation was aptly put by Oyedepo when he reiterated that all Nigerians had an equal stake to the country.

“H. E. Peter Obi was simply urging the Bishop to help him push this message of (an) equal stake of all Nigerians in the Nigerian project to his people and the Christendom,” Okonkwo said.

However, the PCC spokesperson for the All Progressive Congress, Festus Keyamo, reacting to the leaked audio said: “I think the real culprit here are the so-called ‘men of God’ who allowed themselves to be used by an unscrupulous politician to seek to inflame religious passions in our dear country in the name of politics”.

Keyamo added: “As for Peter Obi who declared an election a ‘religious war’ in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country like ours,…his dream to be Nigeria’s President one day has just died a natural death”.

A 2006 Pew research revealed that religion and not nationality was the way in which most Nigerians choose to identify themselves.

In the survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, 76 per cent of Christians said that religion was more important to them than their identity as Africans, Nigerians or members of an ethnic group.

Among Muslims, the number naming religion as the most important factor was even higher at 91 per cent and while 52 per cent of Muslims surveyed believed the government should take steps to make Nigeria an Islamic country, a significant 42 per cent minority of Christians said the government should make the country overtly Christian.

Also underlying these sharply divergent desires is the deep distrust each group feels toward the other and the tension between followers of the two dominant religions has become an even more consistent feature of Nigerian politics.

Religion is also perceived to exert a powerful influence on the country’s public life and President Muhammadu Buhari has often been criticized for skewing appointments and employment in favour of the Muslim north.

Although Nigeria has never conducted a religious census, the former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, noted in 2021 that because religion was so central, disputes over water and land or ethnic rivalries often assume a religious colouration, and politics has proven to be no exception.

  • Peter Obi’s leaked conversation with Bishop Oyedepo confirmed true

Peter Obi’s leaked conversation with Bishop Oyedepo confirmed true

Spokesman of the Labour Party’s Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo has confirmed the leaked conversation between the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi and Bishop of Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a leaked audio, reportedly a conversation between Obi and Oyedepo, in which the Labour Party presidential candidate made mention of “religious war”, has been trending on the Internet, especially on social media, over the weekend.

After the private conversation leaked, Obi was criticised for likening the 2023 presidential election to a religious war, with Festus Keyamo, a spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the dream of the former Anambra State Governor of becoming Nigeria’s president has come to an end as a result.

Keyamo wrote: “Having confirmed the authenticity of what is now known as the Peter Obi ‘Yes-daddy’ audio, I think the real culprit here are the so-called ‘men of God’ who allowed themselves to be used by an unscrupulous politician to seek to inflame religious passions in our dear country in the name of politics.

“So, when they were telling their hapless adherents that they heard the voice of the Lord, it was actually Peter Obi’s telephone calls they heard and not God’s voice. This is deceitful, shameful and disgusting. Imagine a so-called ‘man of God’ comparing notes with a politician as to what he said or what he would say on the pulpit in order to get him votes.

“I hope this sufficiently embarrasses the ‘men of God’ in Nigeria to forthwith desist from using the pulpit for politics and the Church-goers to stop being teleguided by their self-serving ‘men of God’.

“As for Peter Obi who declared an election a ‘religious war’ in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country like ours, the real God has just exposed him and his dream to be Nigeria’s President one day has just died a natural death. ‘Yes-daddy’ is now permanently etched in the consciousness of the nation and we will NEVER forget!”

However, in a series of tweets, Okonkwo argued that the conversation between Obi and Oyedepo was twisted and the that the Winners Chapel Bishop aptly set the context for the conversation.

The Labour Party spokesman wrote: “Our attention has been drawn to the publication of this audio tape of private conversation between @PeterObi and Bishop Oyedepo. It is not surprising that these political criminals are trying to spin the conversation as if Obi was making a religious statement.

“Firstly, the context of the conversation was aptly put by Bishop Oyedepo when he said “All Nigerians have equal stake in this nation, nobody has the right to claim that he is dashing something to someone”.

“H E @PeterObi was simply urging the Bishop to help him push this message of equal stake of all Nigerians in the Nigerian project to his people and the christiandom because the politicians of the other party is carrying on this campaign as if it is a religious war. To drive home this point, he informed him that he visited the traditional ruler of Offa, the Olofa of Offa, who is a Muslim, but who advised Obi to get the support of Oyedepo and be assured of his own support. No Politician has ever visited the Olofa of Offa.

“It is clear to everybody that the APC political party that has a Presidential Candidate, Vice Presidential Candidate, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, National Chairman of the Party all from one religion at a time the CJN is a Muslim is the Party that has declared religious war on Nigerians and we must all rise up together to fight this unconstitutional act of religious intolerance of other religions by APC. I went around with Obi on campaign train and never saw him discriminate against any religion.

“Of course he can’t because his Vice is a Muslim unlike APC. I resigned from APC because of their religious intolerance. Nigerians should disregard any insinuation of religious bigots about this tape”.

  • How I became a billionaire by simply obeying God – Bishop Oyedepo

How I became a billionaire by simply obeying God – Bishop Oyedepo

General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, popularly known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has said he became a billionaire by simply obeying God.

Bishop Oyedepo emphasized that he did not know when he became a millionaire and that when became a billionaire, he was not even aware of it.

Oyedepo made this known in a sermon on Sunday, charging his members to be committed Kingdom promoters from the place where they are.

He said: “God is not a taskmaster. Sir, from 1 Naira position, you are taking strong position in obeying God. The tithe of 10 Naira is 1 Naira. What is your problem? He won’t give you 10 Naira and ask you to bring tithe of 2 Naira. No! When I say such, I say it as God leads me.

“My friend, instead of dropping N10 in a Service and you are going to be in 2 Services, divide it into two: put N5 in the first Service, put N5 in the second Service. God knows your level, don’t pose. But to now look…it is not fair on yourself. It is not on anybody else, it is on yourself.

“Do you know my tithes were part of what we counted in Kaduna when our income was N18,000? But He never failed once. He never failed once! I was giving testimony of N1000 a week. How many years ago? But when you just sit down and be watching, “emm, God will open the windows of heaven.” He won’t open nothing.

“There is what you must do, what I must do to keep the heaven open. But this year, whatever door you have shut against yourself, because people shut the door against themselves, or you don’t know; life and death are in the power of the tongue…you are just destroying the work of your hands by yourself without knowing; nobody here will fall a victim.

“You know how many people can build a rural Church in this place, with N14 million or whatever. You know how many people can build it? You know how many people will never build it? If they have N14 billion, they won’t build one. If they have N140 billion, they won’t build one. Their heart is somewhere else. They are worshipping the coins.

“It took me time to become a ‘Thousandnaire.’ I didn’t know when I became a millionaire. I became a billionaire without knowing by simply obeying God. It’s all about you”.
